In the last years, digital controllers became a very interesting alternative (low costs and higher accuracy) to the analogue or to hydrodynamic traditional controllers in water supply canal automation, in order to match water supply to water demands. This kind of hydraulic systems needs particular research for control applications because they are big scale systems, open and characterized by big delays and great inertia. This paper presents several digital control modes tested in an experimental canal that will be used as a research platform on the automatic canal control domain. The canal operation and their control modes selection are supervised by a SCADA system developed and configured for this particular canal.

El presente artículo de fitogeografía histórica trata  de explicar a partir de documentos históricos y relatos de exploradores, buscadores de oro y científicos que recorrieron Costa Rica durante los siglos XVll, XVlll, XlX, el origen y flora de la sabana.   Las sabanas de Guanacaste deben su origen a factores antropológicos, edafológicos y climatológicos que actúan en conjunto y no solo al factor antrópico como ha querido explicar.   La flora de sabana proviene de la asociación vegetal matorral deciduo por la sequia con especies sempervirentes entremezcladas, cuya florase relaciona con la de las formaciones arbusticas herbáceas secas americanas, llanas y cerradas. Esta flora encuentra las condiciones favorables (fuego anual, larga estación seca, precipitación mal distribuida en el año, etc.) para diseminarse y ocupar el área del bosque seco deciduo por la sequia.   SUMMARY The present article of historical phytogeography tryst to explain by means of historical documents and commentaries of explorers, goldminers and scientists that traveled in Costa Rica during the 17, 18 and 19 th centuries, the origin of the flora found in the Guanacaste savanna.   The Guanacaste savanna owes its origin to a combination of anthropologic, edafologic and climatologic factors; and not only to the anthropologic factor as has been often thought.   The savanna type flora originates from the deciduous thicket vegetative association that is common in dry areas intermingled with evergreen species. This type of flora is related to shrub and opens and closed dry Americans herbaceous formations. This flora chooses favorable conditions (burnt off areas, long dry season, poor annual precipitation distribution, etc) in the order to disseminate and occupy the deciduous dry forest. RESUME Cet article de phytogéographie historique, à partir de documents historiques, de récits d’explorateurs, de chercheurs d’or ; de scientifiques qui ont parcouru C.R aux XVll, XVlll et XlX siècles, tente d’expliquer l’origine de la savane ainsi que sa flore.   On reconnaît que ces origines sont plutôt dûes aux actions conjointes de facteurs anthropologiques, pédologiques et climatiques, au lieu du seul facteur anthropologique comme on voulait l’expliquer auparavant. La savane résulte d’une association végétale : une brousse entremêlée d’espèces « semper virens » malgré l’existence de la saison sèche. Cette flore est en relation avec les informations arbustives et herbeuses –qui caractérisent les dépressions centre américaines-  fermées, fonc sèches. Cette association végétale s’est implantée à la faveur de pratiqués culturales tels les brûlis annuels, des longues saisons sèches et de la répartition irrégulière des pluies au long de l’année, à la place de la forêt claire caducifoliée.

In its open and private-based dimension, the Internet is the epitome of the Liberal International Order in its global spatial dimension. Therefore, normative questions arise from the emergence of powerful non-liberal actors such as China in Internet governance. In particular, China has supported a UN-based multilateral Internet governance model based on state sovereignty aimed at replacing the existing ICANN-based multistakeholder model. While persistent, this debate has become less dualistic through time. However, fear of Internet fragmentation has increased as the US-China technological competition grew harsher. This thesis inquires “(To what extent) are Chinese stakeholders reshaping the rules of Global Internet Governance?”. This is further unpacked in three smaller questions: (i) (To what extent) are Chinese stakeholders contributing to increased state influence in multistakeholder fora?; (ii) (how) is China contributing to Internet fragmentation?; and (iii) what are the main drivers of Chinese stakeholders’ stances? To answer these questions, Chinese stakeholders’ actions are observed in the making and management of critical Internet resources at the IETF and ICANN respectively, and in mobile connectivity standard-making at 3GPP. Through the lens of norm entrepreneurship in regime complexes, this thesis interprets changes and persistence in the Internet governance normative order and Chinese attitudes towards it. Three research methods are employed: network analysis, semi-structured expert interviews, and thematic document analysis. While China has enhanced state intervention in several technological fields, fostering debates on digital sovereignty, this research finds that the Chinese government does not exert full control on its domestic private actors and concludes that Chinese stakeholders have increasingly adapted to multistakeholder Internet governance as they grew influential within it. To enhance control over Internet-based activities, the Chinese government resorted to regulatory and technical control domestically rather than establishing a splinternet. This is due to Chinese stakeholders’ interest in retaining the network benefits of global interconnectivity.

The application of modern ICT technologies is radically changing many fields pushing toward more open and dynamic value chains fostering the cooperation and integration of many connected partners, sensors, and devices. As a valuable example, the emerging Smart Tourism field derived from the application of ICT to Tourism so to create richer and more integrated experiences, making them more accessible and sustainable. From a technological viewpoint, a recurring challenge in these decentralized environments is the integration of heterogeneous services and data spanning multiple administrative domains, each possibly applying different security/privacy policies, device and process control mechanisms, service access, and provisioning schemes, etc. The distribution and heterogeneity of those sources exacerbate the complexity in the development of integrating solutions with consequent high effort and costs for partners seeking them. Taking a step towards addressing these issues, we propose APERTO, a decentralized and distributed architecture that aims at facilitating the blending of data and services. At its core, APERTO relies on APERTO FaaS, a Serverless platform allowing fast prototyping of the business logic, lowering the barrier of entry and development costs to newcomers, (zero) fine-grained scaling of resources servicing end-users, and reduced management overhead. APERTO FaaS infrastructure is based on asynchronous and transparent communications between the components of the architecture, allowing the development of optimized solutions that exploit the peculiarities of distributed and heterogeneous environments. In particular, APERTO addresses the provisioning of scalable and cost-efficient mechanisms targeting: i) function composition allowing the definition of complex workloads from simple, ready-to-use functions, enabling smarter management of complex tasks and improved multiplexing capabilities; ii) the creation of end-to-end differentiated QoS slices minimizing interfaces among application/service running on a shared infrastructure; i) an abstraction providing uniform and optimized access to heterogeneous data sources, iv) a decentralized approach for the verification of access rights to resources.

The continuous and swift progression of both wireless and wired communication technologies in today's world owes its success to the foundational systems established earlier. These systems serve as the building blocks that enable the enhancement of services to cater to evolving requirements. Studying the vulnerabilities of previously designed systems and their current usage leads to the development of new communication technologies replacing the old ones such as GSM-R in the railway field. The current industrial research has a specific focus on finding an appropriate telecommunication solution for railway communications that will replace the GSM-R standard which will be switched off in the next years. Various standardization organizations are currently exploring and designing a radiofrequency technology based standard solution to serve railway communications in the form of FRMCS (Future Railway Mobile Communication System) to substitute the current GSM-R. Bearing on this topic, the primary strategic objective of the research is to assess the feasibility to leverage on the current public network technologies such as LTE to cater to mission and safety critical communication for low density lines. The research aims to identify the constraints, define a service level agreement with telecom operators, and establish the necessary implementations to make the system as reliable as possible over an open and public network, while considering safety and cybersecurity aspects. The LTE infrastructure would be utilized to transmit the vital data for the communication of a railway system and to gather and transmit all the field measurements to the control room for maintenance purposes. Given the significance of maintenance activities in the railway sector, the ongoing research includes the implementation of a machine learning algorithm to detect railway equipment faults, reducing time and human analysis errors due to the large volume of measurements from the field.

From 2010, the Proton Radius has become one of the most interest value to determine. The first proof of not complete understanding of its internal structure was the measurement of the Lamb Shift using the muonic hydrogen, leading to a value 7σ lower. A new road so was open and the Proton Radius Puzzle epoch begun. FAMU Experiment is a project that tries to give an answer to this Puzzle implementing high precision experimental apparatus. The work of this thesis is based on the study, construction and first characterization of a new detection system. Thanks to the previous experiments and simulations, this apparatus is composed by 17 detectors positioned on a semicircular crown with the related electronic circuit. The detectors' characterization is based on the use of a LabView program controlling a digital potentiometer and on other two analog potentiometers, all three used to set the amplitude of each detector to a predefined value, around 1.2 V, set on the oscilloscope by which is possible to observe the signal. This is the requirement in order to have, in the final measurement, a single high peak given by the sum of all the signals coming from the detectors. Each signal has been acquired for almost half of an hour, but the entire circuit has been maintained active for more time to observe its capacity to work for longer periods. The principal results of this thesis are given by the spectra of 12 detectors and the corresponding values of Voltages, FWHM and Resolution. The outcomes of the acquisitions show also another expected behavior: the strong dependence of the detectors from the temperature, demonstrating that an its change causes fluctuations in the signal. In turn, these fluctuations will affect the spectrum, resulting in a shifting of the curve and a lower Resolution. On the other hand, a measurement performed in stable conditions will lead to accordance between the nominal and experimental measurements, as for the detectors 10, 11 and 12 of our system.

Este artigo descreve como jovens religiosos e autoridades religiosas das respectivas comunidades compreendem a sexualidade, considerando suas experiências pessoais e como membros de comunidades religiosas. A análise pretende contribuir para que políticas públicas dedicadas à promoção da saúde sexual da juventude considerem a religiosidade no contexto de um Estado laico e da promoção do direito à prevenção. Foram realizadas 26 entrevistas abertas e semidirigidas em diferentes comunidades da região metropolitana da cidade de São Paulo (comunidade Católica, de Umbanda, do Candomblé e de diferentes denominações Evangélicas) sobre iniciação sexual, casamento, gravidez, contracepção e prevenção das DSTs/aids, homossexualidade, aborto e direitos humanos. Observou-se como jovens e autoridades religiosas convivem com a tensão entre tradição e modernidade e os distintos discursos sobre a sexualidade. Como sujeitos religiosos (do discurso religioso) e sujeitos sexuais (de discursos sobre sexualidade), devem ser incorporados pelos programas como sujeitos de direito nos termos de sua religiosidade.

OBJECTIVES: The aim of this study was to determine the impact of endovascular surgery versus open vascular technique training in a Brazilian teaching service. DESIGN: Cross-sectional study. SETTING: Hospital das Clinicas-Faculty of Medicine University of Sao Paulo, a tertiary institutional hospital Brazil. PARTICIPANTS: We reviewed 1,040 arterial operations performed during 2 distinct time periods: January 1995 to December 1996, and January 2006 to December 2007. Based on the disease treated, the procedures were classified into the following 5 groups: abdominal aortic aneurysms (AAA), aorto-iliac obstructive disease (Al), obstructive disease of the femoropoplitealtibial segment (FP), carotid disease (C), and others (0). The operations were also divided into an endovascular surgery (ES) group and an open surgery (OS) group. We compared the number of open and endovascular procedures for each arterial disease group during both periods. RESULTS: During the 2006-2007 period, 654 patients were treated surgically, whereas over the 1995-1996 period, 386 arterial operations were performed. A. significant increase in endovascular procedures (p < 0.001) was found from the 1995-1996 period to the 2006-201)7 period (35 vs 351, respectively) in all groups, whereas open surgery showed a slight increase in the number of procedures in the AAA and 0 groups only. In the 1995-1996 period, OS was the primary surgical method for all groups, but in the 2006-2007 time frame, OS was performed more frequently than ES only in the AAA and 0 groups. Considering all vascular disease groups, OS was the technique used in 90.9% (351 of 386) of the operations during 1995-1996, whereas in 2006-2007, OS was performed in only 46.3% (303 of 654) of the procedures. CONCLUSIONS: The increase in the number of ES observed over the past decade has had little impact on OS procedures performed at our medical center, not bringing harm to open surgical training. Experience with advanced techniques has increased the indications for laparoscopic liver resection. This video demonstrates technical aspects of a pure laparoscopic mesohepatectomy using intrahepatic Glissonian technique. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first case of anatomic laparoscopic mesohepatectomy using the Glissonian approach published in the English literature. A 62-year-old man with colorectal liver metastasis occupying central liver segments was referred for surgical treatment. The first step is the control of segment 4 pedicle. Using the round ligament as a guide, one incision is performed on its right margin and another is made at the bottom of segment 4. A vascular clamp is introduced through those incisions to occlude segment 4 Glissonian sheath. The next step is to control the right anterior pedicle. The first incision is made in front of the hilum and another is performed on the right edge of gallbladder bed. Laparoscopic clamp is introduced through these incisions and closed producing ischemic discoloration of segments 5 and 8. Vascular clamp is replaced by an endoscopic vascular stapling device and stapler is fired. Line of liver transection is marked along the liver surface following ischemic area. Liver transection is accomplished with bipolar vessel sealing device and endoscopic stapling device as appropriate. Specimen was extracted through a suprapubic incision. Liver raw surfaces were reviewed for bleeding and bile leaks. Operative time was 200 min with minimum blood loss and no need for blood transfusion. Recovery was uneventful, and the patient was discharged on the fifth postoperative day. Histological examination revealed clear surgical margins. Mesohepatectomy can be safely performed laparoscopically in selected patients and by surgeons with expertise in both liver surgery and laparoscopic techniques. The use of the intrahepatic Glissonian approach may help to identify the exact limits of the mesohepatectomy to avoid ischemic injury of the remnant liver.

The emphasis of this work is on the optimal design of MRI magnets with both superconducting coils and ferromagnetic rings. The work is directed to the automated design of MRI magnet systems containing superconducting wire and both `cold' and `warm' iron. Details of the optimization procedure are given and the results show combined superconducting and iron material MRI magnets with excellent field characteristics. Strong, homogeneous central magnetic fields are produced with little stray or external field leakage. The field calculations are performed using a semi-analytical method for both current coil and iron material sources. Design examples for symmetric, open and asymmetric clinical MRI magnets containing both superconducting coils and ferromagnetic material are presented.

As reformas econ??mica, pol??tica, social e administrativa tiveram prioridades e objetivos divergentes. A reforma econ??mica foi sistem??tica e congruente, a pol??tica foi defensiva e pouco abrangente, e a social foi problem??tica e confusa. A reforma administrativa foi, comparativamente, limitada. Uma proposta para desenvolver um sistema administrativo respons??vel pelo servi??o p??blico foi postergada nos ??ltimos 12 anos at?? que, em maio de 1997, finalmente a atual administra????o prop??s um programa de moderniza????o. A segunda id??ia ?? que, mesmo que a atual administra????o tenha a inten????o de desenvolver um novo sistema de accountability e um plano de carreira para o servi??o p??blico, parece plaus??vel que a tradicional pol??tica de controle, atrav??s da estrutura administrativa, possa ser prejudicada se essas propostas realmente reduzirem o poder discricion??rio dos altos cargos p??blicos e submeterem reservas p??blicas a um esquema de controle social mais aberto e formal. Logo, ?? poss??vel dizer que a alternativa escolhida pelos reformistas foi usar uma abordagem gerenciadora, onde a melhoria dos procedimentos e a implementa????o de algumas t??cnicas administrativas avan??adas substituem, pelo menos at?? agora, uma transforma????o mais profunda da estrutura administrativa. Uma estrat??gia de gerenciamento permite, pelo menos at?? o momento, a melhoria dos servi??os atrav??s do aumento da participa????o de servidores p??blicos, sem prejudicar a atual administra????o, como um instrumento para implementar diferentes agendas pol??ticas usando recursos p??blicos. Nosso argumento ?? que, como o programa de moderniza????o est?? sendo implantado, ?? importante estudar minuciosamente as possibilidades de se implementar a reforma do servi??o p??blico e melhorar a responsabilidade do sistema, dada a particular rela????o que existe entre a administra????o p??blica e o sistema pol??tico no M??xico.
