The analysis of Macdonald for electrolytes is generalized to the case in which two groups of ions are present. We assume that the electrolyte can be considered as a dispersion of ions in a dielectric liquid, and that the ionic recombination can be neglected. We present the differential equations governing the ionic redistribution when the liquid is subjected to an external electric field, describing the simultaneous diffusion of the two groups of ions in the presence of their own space charge fields. We investigate the influence of the ions on the impedance spectroscopy of an electrolytic cell. In the analysis, we assume that each group of ions have equal mobility, the electrodes perfectly block and that the adsorption phenomena can be neglected. In this framework, it is shown that the real part of the electrical impedance of the cell has a frequency dependence presenting two plateaux, related to a type of ambipolar and free diffusion coefficients. The importance of the considered problem on the ionic characterization performed by means of the impedance spectroscopy technique was discussed. (c) 2008 American Institute of Physics.

We investigate the electronic properties of Mn(B) substitutional doping in cubic boron nitride (BN), for different charge states, using density functional theory (DFT) calculations. We show that the neutral Mn has a nonmagnetic ground state (S=0). Upon charge injection, it is unambiguously shown that the Mn(B)(-) has a high-spin configuration with a strong, localized magnetic moment of 5 mu(Bohr). We developed a simple model, parameterized by the DFT results, that allows us to interpret the rules played by the crystal-field and exchange-correlation splitting in the magnetization process.

The combination of metallic phthalocyanines (MPcs) and biomolecules has been explored in the literature either as mimetic systems to investigate molecular interactions or as supporting layers to immobilize biomolecules. Here, Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films containing the phospholipid dimyristoyl phosphatidic acid (DMPA) mixed either with iron phthalocyanine (FePc) or with lutetium bisphthalocyanine (LuPc(2)) were applied as ITO modified-electrodes in the detection of catechol using cyclic voltammetry. The mixed Langmuir films of FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA displayed surface-pressure isotherms with no evidence of molecular-level interactions. The Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR) spectra of the multilayer LB films confirmed the lack of interaction between the components. The DMPA and the FePc molecules were found to be oriented perpendicularly to the substrate, while LuPc(2) molecules were randomly organized. The phospholipid matrix induced a remarkable electrocatalytic effect on the phthalocyanines; as a result the mixed LB films deposited on ITO could be used to detect catechol with detection limits of 4.30 x 10(-7) and 3.34 x 10(-7) M for FePc + DMPA and LuPc(2) + DMPA, respectively. Results from kinetics experiments revealed that ion diffusion dominated the response of the modified electrodes. The sensitivity was comparable to that of other non-enzymatic sensors, which is sufficient to detect catechol in the food industry. The higher stability of the electrochemical response of the LB films and the ability to control the molecular architecture are promising for further studies with incorporation of biomolecules.

Deoxyribonucleic acid based gel solid electrolytes were prepared and their electric properties were characterized. Their ionic conductivity is in the range of 10(-4)-10(-5) S/cm at room temperature and increases linearly in function of temperature, obeying an Arrhenius-like relationship. The present study, combined with the literature data, suggests that the electrical conduction mechanism in these membranes involve ion motion and/or charge hopping, promoted most likely by a significant interaction between the membrane components. The good conductivity results, as found here, together with the good transparency and good adhesion to the electrodes show that the DNA-based gel polymer electrolytes are very promising materials for application in various electrochromic devices. Lead fluoroborate glasses were prepared by the melt-quenching technique and characterized in terms of (micro)structural and electrical properties. The study was conducted on as prepared as well as temperature- and/or electric field-treated glass samples. The results show that, in the as-prepared glassy-state materials, electrical conductivity improved with increasing the PbF(2) glass content. This result involves both an increase of the fluoride charge carrier density and, especially, a decrease of the activation energy from a glass structure expansion improving charge carrier mobility. Moreover, for the electric field-treated glass samples, surface crystallization was observed even below the glass transition temperature. As previously proposed in literature, and shown here, the occurrence of this phenomenon arose from an electrochemically induced redox reaction at the electrodes, followed by crystallite nucleation. Once nucleated, growth of beta-PbF(2) crystallites, with the indication of incorporating reduced lead ions (Pb(+)), was both (micro)structurally and electrically detectable and analyzed. The overall crystallization-associated features observed here adapt well with the floppy-rigid model that has been proposed to further complete the original continuous-random-network model by Zachariasen for closely addressing not only glasses' structure but also crystallization mechanism. Finally, the crystallization-modified kinetic picture of the glasses' electrical properties, through application of polarization/depolarization measurements originally combined with impedance spectroscopy, was extensively explored. The title compound, C11H10N2O3S, was synthesized from furoyl isothiocyanate and furfurylamine in dry acetone. The thiourea group is in the thioamide form. The trans-cis geometry of the thiourea group is stabilized by intramolecular hydrogen bonding between the carbonyl and cis-thioamide and results in a pseudo-S(6) planar ring which makes dihedral angles of 2.5 (3) and 88.1 (2)degrees with the furoyl and furfuryl groups, respectively. There is also an intramolecular hydrogen bond between the furan O atom and the other thioamide H atom. In the crystal structure, molecules are linked by two intermolecular N-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds, forming dimers. These dimers are stacked within the crystal structure along the [010] direction.

The concept of constitutional dynamic chemistry (CDC) based on the control of non-covalent interactions in supramolecular structures is promising for having a large impact on nanoscience and nanotechnology if adequate nanoscale manipulation methods are used. In this study, we demonstrate that the layer-by-layer (LbL) technique may be used to produce electroactive electrodes with ITO coated by tetrasulfonated nickel phthalocyanine (NiTsPc) alternated with poly(allylamine hydrochloride) (PAH) incorporating gold nanoparticles (AuNP), in which synergy has been achieved in the interaction between the nanoparticles and NiTsPc. The catalytic activity toward hydrogen peroxide (H(2)O(2)) in multilayer films was investigated using cyclic voltammetry, where oxidation of H(2)O(2) led to increased currents in the PAH-AuNP/NiTsPc films for the electrochemical processes associated with the phthalocyanine ring and nickel at 0.52 and 0.81 V vs. SCE, respectively, while for PAH/NiTsPc films (without AuNP) only the first redox process was affected. In control experiments we found out that the catalytic activity was not solely due to the presence of AuNP, but rather to the nanoparticles inducing NiTsPc supramolecular structures that favored access to their redox sites, thus yielding strong charge transfer. The combined effects of NiTsPc and AuNP, which could only be observed in nanostructured LbL films, point to another avenue to pursue within the CDC paradigm.

A 260 nm layer of organic bulk heterojunction blend of the polymer poly(3-hexylthiophene) (P3HT) and the fullerene [6,6]-phenyl C(61)-butyric (PCBM) was spin-coated in between aluminum and gold electrodes, respectively, on top of a laser inscribed azo polymer surface-relief diffraction grating. Angle-dependent surface plasmons (SPs) with a large band gap were observed in the normalized photocurrent by the P3HT-PCBM layer as a function of wavelength. The SP-induced photocurrents were also investigated as a function of the grating depth and spacing.

Although H(+) and OH(-) are the most common ions in aqueous media, they are not usually observable in capillary electrophoresis (CE) experiments, because of the extensive use of buffer solutions as the background electrolyte. In the present work, we introduce CE equipment designed to allow the determination of such ions in a similar fashion as any other ion. Basically, it consists of a four-compartment piece of equipment for electrolysis-separated experiments (D. P. de Jesus et at, Anal. Chem., 2005, 77, 607). In such a system, the ends of the capillary are placed in two reservoirs, which are connected to two other reservoirs through electrolyte-filled tubes. The electrodes of the high-voltage power source are positioned in these reservoirs. Thus, the electrolysis products are kept away from the inputs of the capillary. The detection was provided by two capacitively coupled contactless conductivity detectors (CD), each one positioned about 11 cm from the end of the capillary. Two applications were demonstrated: titration-like procedures for nanolitre samples and mobility measurements. Strong and weak acids (pK(a) < 5), pure or mixtures, could be titrated. The analytical curve is linear from 50 mu M up to 10 mM of total dissociable hydrogen (r = 0.99899 for n =10) in 10-nL samples. By including D(2)O in the running electrolyte, we could demonstrate how to measure the mixed proton/deuteron mobility. When H(2)O/D(2)O (9 : 1 v/v) was used as the solvent, the mobility was 289.6 +/- 0.5 x 10(-5) cm(2) V(-1) s(-1). Due to the fast conversion of the species, this value is related to the overall behaviour of all isotopologues and isotopomers of the Zundel and Eigen structures, as well as the Stokesian mobility of proton and deuteron. The effect of neutral (o-phenanthroline) and negatively charged (chloroacetate) bases and aprotic solvent (DMSO) over the H(+) mobility was also demonstrated.

Prussian Blue has been introduced as a mediator to achieve stable, sensitive, reproducible, and interference-free biosensors. However, Na(+), Li(+), H(+), and all group II cations are capable to block the activity of Prussian Blue and, because Na(+) can be found in most human fluids, Prussian Blue analogs have already been developed to overcome this problem. These analogs, such as copper hexacyanoferrate, have also been introduced in a conducting polypyrrole matrix to create hybrid materials (copper hexacyanoferrate/polypyrrole, CuHCNFe/Ppy) with improved mechanical and electrochemical characteristics. Nowadays, the challenges in amperometric enzymatic biosensors consist of improving the enzyme immobilization and in making the chemical signal transduction more efficient. The incorporation of nanostructured materials in biosensors can optimize both steps and a nanostructured hybrid CuHCNFe/Ppy mediator has been developed using a template of colloidal polystyrene particles. The nanostructured material has achieved sensitivities 7.6 times higher than the bulk film during H(2)O(2) detection and it has also presented better results in other analytical parameters such as time response and detection limit. Besides, the nanostructured mediator was successfully applied at glucose biosensing in electrolytes containing Prussian Blue blocking cations. (C) 2008 The Electrochemical Society.
