This work applied a 2² factorial design to the optimization of the extraction of seven elements (calcium, magnesium, potassium, iron, zinc, copper and manganese) in brachiaria leaves, determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The factors sample mass and digestion type were evaluated at two levels: 200/500 mg, and dry/wet, respectively. Principal component analysis allowed simultaneous discrimination of all the significant effects in one biplot. Wet digestion and mass of 200 mg were considered the best conditions. The decrease of 60% in sample mass allowed to save costs and reagents. The method was validated through the estimation of figures of merit.

Diclofenac is one of most frequently detected compounds in the water cycle. In this work, the effect of initial concentration, liquid inclusion complexes with β-Cyclodextrins (β-CDs) on the photodegradation of diclofenac were studied. Six phototransformation products were detected by HPLC chromatograms. UV-absorption spectra of diclofenac and phototransformation products were determined. One of the phototransformation products was identified. The degradation followed pseudo-first-order kinetics. The experiment showed that irradiation of diclofenac in the presence of β-CDs increase photodegradation rate and determined the optimal molar ratio of diclofenac to β-CDs as 1:2. The reduced photohaemolytic activity of diclofenac in the presence of β-CDs may be attributed to the sequestering and stabilizing of the radical intermediates and /or photoproducts by complexation.

Zeolite-encapsulated complexes have been widely applied in hydrocarbon oxidation catalysis. The "ship-in-a-bottle" encapsulation of iron(III) complexes containing piperazine and piperazine-derivative ligands in zeolite-Y is described. The flexible ligand methodology was employed and the efficiency and reproducibility of the procedure was investigated. The catalysts were characterized employing several techniques and the results indicate the presence of coordinated and uncoordinated iron(III) ions inside and outside the zeolitic cage.

A simple, fast and inexpensive method was developed to determine essential elements in pellets of rice samples using energy dispersive X-ray fluorescence spectrometry (EDXRF). The accuracy and precision were evaluated using Standard Reference Material (rice flour NIST 1568a), and yielding relative standard deviation below 5%. The paired t-test showed good agreement within 95% confidence values. The detection limits (3σ) of Mn and Zn were 5.1 and 2.2 mg kg-1, respectively. The proposed method proved to be effective when used to determine Mn and Zn in commercial samples of rice without go by stage of decomposition.

A sequential extraction procedure was applied to wheat and soybean seed samples. The total protein content (determined by two distinct methods: Bradford and bicinchoninic acid-BCA) and distribution of Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn in each fraction was determined. The sequential extraction employed four different solutions: water, 0.5 mol L-1 NaCl, ethanol/water (70:30 v v-1) and 0.5 mol L-1 NaOH. For both samples, the highest concentration of metals was observed in those extracts associated with globulin-type proteins using NaCl solution. Regarding protein content, higher levels were obtained using the BCA method.

A simultaneous solid phase extraction procedure for enrichment of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) has been developed. The method is based on adsorption of Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II) ions on polyethylene glycol-silica gel pre-conditioned with acetate buffer (pH 5.5). The adsorbed metal ions are eluted with nitric acid (1 mol L -1) and determined by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The calibration graph was linear in the range of 2-140 ng mL-1 for Cu(II), 1-40 ng mL-1 for Cd(II) and 4-100 ng mL-1 for Mn(II). The limits of detection were 0.66, 0.33 and 1.20 ng mL-1 for Cu(II), Cd(II) and Mn(II), respectively.

The metal distribution in the surface sediment fractions of the Cachoeira River was evaluated based on the fractionation method using a five-step sequential extraction. The determination of metals was made by flame atomic absorption spectrophotometry (F AAS). Zn, Pb and Cu exhibit higher concentrations in the residual fraction of the sediment from sites that receive discharges from urban and industrial zones. High levels of Ni (60 ± 1 to 447 ± 9 µg L-1) were found in the river water, which may be detrimental to the "health" of rural communities that utilize the river water for domestic purposes without treatment.

This paper describes the evaluation of a new method of sample preparation using a cold finger system with continuous water flow for rice analysis by flame atomic absorption spectrometry. The limits of detection for Cu, Fe, Mn and Zn for the proposed method were 0.36, 1.84, 2.12 and 0.16 mg kg-1, respectively. The RSDs were lower than 6.0% for all elements and the CRM analyzed showed values with 95% agreement. The proposed method is simple and safe for the proposed objective and does not require the use of mixtures of acid or special equipment for sample preparation.

Synthesis, spectral identification, and magnetic properties of three complexes of Ni(II), Cu(II), and Zn(II) are described. All three compounds have the general formula [M(L)2(H2O)2], where L = deprotonated phenol in the Schiff base 2-((z)-(3-methylpyridin-2-yleimino)methyl)phenol. The three complexes were synthesized in a one-step synthesis and characterized by elemental analysis, Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy, electronic spectra, X-ray diffraction (XRD), and room temperature magnetic moments. The Cu(II) and Ni(II) complexes exhibited room temperature magnetic moments of 1.85 B.M. per copper atom and 2.96 B.M. per nickel atom. The X-band electron spin resonance spectra of a Cu(II) sample in dimethylformamide frozen at 77 K (liquid nitrogen temperature) showed a typical ΔMS = ± 1 transition. The complexes ([M(L)2(H2O)2]) were investigated by the cyclic voltammetry technique, which provided information regarding the electrochemical mechanism of redox behavior of the compounds. Thermal decomposition of the complexes at 750 ºC resulted in the formation of metal oxide nanoparticles. XRD analyses indicated that the nanoparticles had a high degree of crystallinity. The average sizes of the nanoparticles were found to be approximately 54.3, 30.1, and 44.4 nm for NiO, CuO, and ZnO, respectively.

Muitos compostos modelo contendo porfirinas têm sido preparados num esforço para entender o sistema de fotossíntese e os processos de aproveitamento de energia solar. Sistemas doadores-receptores contendo porfirinas têm sido freqüentemente estudados para testar várias descrições teóricas sobre transferência de elétrons. O estudo de parâmetros fotoquímicos e fotofísicos como a distância para transferência de energia, geometria molecular e a diferença de potencial eletrônico, tem se mostrado importante para a definição da transferência eletrônica em porfirinas. Neste trabalho apresentamos a síntese, purificação e caracterização por espectroscopia UV/Vis, ¹H e 19F RMN, luminescência e tempos de vida de novos modelos moleculares de porfirinas, que permitam investigar esses parâmetros. Utilizou-se o dímero Zn,Mn(TPPF4)2pip e seus monômeros ZnTPPF4pipH e MnF5TPP. A caracterização do ZnMn(TPPF4)2pip, foi dificultada devido a presença de Mn+3, devido ao forte acoplamento dos orbitais dpi do manganês e o sistema pi da porfirina, que aumenta a interação manganês-porfirina mudando o espectro eletrônico UV/Vis e distorcendo os sinais de ¹H e 19F RMN do dímero. A presença de Mn+3 desloca E1/2 do anel porfirínico para valores mais negativos, o que resulta em reduções mais difíceis, impedindo a transferência de energia da Znporfirina para a Mnporfirina.

Este trabalho propõe um método simples, rápido e confiável para determinação direta e simultânea de Al, As, Fe, Mn e Ni em cachaça por espectrometria de absorção atômica em forno de grafite (GFAAS). A superfície superior da plataforma do tubo de grafite foi revestida com filme à base de tungstênio (WxCyOz).O programa de aquecimento otimizado (temperatura, tempo de rampa, tempo de patamar) foi o seguinte: secagem 1 (100ºC, 5 s, 5 s); secagem 2 (120ºC, 5 s, 5 s); pirólise (1300ºC, 10 s, 30 s); atomização (2200ºC, 1 s, 6 s) e limpeza (2550ºC, 1 s, 3s). Os desvios padrões relativos (n=3) foram < 4,4%, < 0,7%, < 11%, < 6,0%, < 1,2% para os elementos Al, As, Fe, Mn e Ni, respectivamente. A exatidão foi avaliada por meio de testes de adição e recuperação dos analitos em 8 amostras de cachaças comerciais, e as recuperações situaram-se nos seguintes intervalos: 80 - 105% (Al), 81 - 92% (As), 82 - 108% (Fe), 83 - 106% (Mn), 83 - 108% (Ni). Os limites de detecção calculados foram 9,7 µg L-1 Al, 2,3 µg L-1 As, 12 µg L-1 Fe, 14 µg L-1 Mn e 0,8 µg L-1 Ni.

The porous mixed oxide SiO2/TiO2/Sb2O5 obtained by the sol-gel processing method presented a good ion exchange property and a high exchange capacity towards the Li+, Na+ and K+ ions. In the H+/M+ ion exchange process, the H+ / Na+ could be described as presenting an ideal character. The ion exchange equilibria of Li+ and K+ were quantitatively described with the help of the model of fixed tetradentate centers. The results of simulation evidence that for the H+ / Li+ exchange the usual situation takes place: the affinity of the material to the Li+ ions is decreased with increasing the degree of ion exchange. On the contrary, for K+ the effects of positive cooperativity, that facilitate the H+ / K+ exchange, were revealed.

The thermal decomposition behavior of the Fe(II), Co(II), Ni(II) and Zn(II) complexes of polydithiooxamide has been investigated by thermogravimetric analysis (TGA) at a heating rate of 20°C min-1 under nitrogen. The Coats-Redfern integral method is used to evaluate the kinetic parameters for the successive steps in the decomposition sequence observed in the TGA curves. The processes of thermal decomposition taking place in the four complexes are studied comparatively as the TGA curves indicate the difference in the thermal decomposition behavior of these complexes. The thermal stabilities of these complexes are discussed in terms of repulsion among electron pairs in the valence shell of the central ion and electronegativity effects.

In this paper, we report the stability of the Li(HF)3- molecular anion calculated at the MP2/6-31++G** and CCSD(T)/6-31++G** level of theory. Five possible conformers of Li(HF)3- molecular anions have been determined employing ab initio MP2 method with 6-31++G** basis set. The most stable conformer of five Li(HF)3- anions is in a cyclic ring structure Li(HF)3-(1). From our calculations we show that the molecule is stable towards electron attachment, with an electron adiabatic electron affinity (AEA) of 199.5 meV (233.1 meV with zero point energy correction) and 471.3 meV at the MP2 and CCSD(T) levels, respectively. In addition we present vertical detachment energies of 230.2 meV and 795.8 meV at the MP2, CCSD(T), respectively. The importance of the latter has to do with the ability of experimental detection of this value.

Copolymers of methyl methacrylate (MMA) and triethyleneglycol dimethacrylate (TEGDMA) obtained by photoinitiated polymerization using Fe(III) complexes were submitted to thermogravimetry (TGA) under dynamic air atmosphere and N2, and differential scanning calorimetric analysis (DSC). Thermal events were observed only between 90 - 110 ºC. Glass transitions were observed at ca. 100 ºC, followed by an exothermic peak at 170 ºC. The exothermic peak was assigned to a thermal curing process due to the presence of unreacted vinyl groups of the monomers. DSC revealed to be a useful tool to evaluate the curing completeness in this kind of material, using small amounts of sample in relatively short time.
