In this paper, the IEEE 14 bus test system is used in order to perform adequacy assessment of a transmission system when large scale integration of electric vehicles is considered at distribution levels. In this framework, the symmetric/constr ained fuzzy power flow (SFPF/CFPF) was proposed. The SFPF/CFPF models are suitable to quantify the adequacy of transmission network to satisfy “reasonable demands for the transmission of electricity” as defined, for instance, in the European Directive 2009/72/EC. In this framework, electric vehicles of different types will be treated as fuzzy loads configuring part of the “reasonable demands”. With this study, it is also intended to show how to evaluate the amount of EVs that can be safely accommodated to the grid meeting a certain adequacy level.

The effects of an increase in cod end mesh size from 55 to 60 and 70 mm and a change of mesh configuration from 55 mm diamond to 55 turn square mesh on the size selectivity of four by-catch species (the red shrimp Aristeus antennatus, the European hake Merluccius merluccius, the horse mackerel Trachurus trachurus and the blue whiting Micromesistius poutassou) commonly captured in the crustacean fishery off the Portuguese south coast, were evaluated. Selectivity parameters for blue whiting, the most abundant species in the catches, were estimated taking into account between-haul variation, while for the remaining species, captured in much lower quantities, the selectivity estimates were based on pooled data by length class for all hauls within the same cod end. Length at 50% retention, L-50, was found to increase with mesh size and with the change in mesh configuration for all the studied species. For blue whiting trawling depth and cod end catch were found to play a role in between-haul variation by increasing L-50 as well. The results suggest that an increase in the current minimum mesh size of 55-70 mm would be advisable to be compatible with the minimum landing sizes (MLSs) of 29 mm carapace length and 27 cm total length for red shrimp and hake, respectively, while it would greatly reduce the amount of discards, particularly those for blue whiting, that accounted for approximately 50% of the total catch weight. Horse mackerel was the only species for which the use of a larger mesh size would result in a significant escapement of individuals above the MLS of 15 cm. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. The species and size selectivity of long-lines using small hooks were studied off the south coast of Portugal using ''Mustad'' brand round bent, flatted sea hooks (Quality 2316 DT) numbers 15, 13, and 11 baited with razor shell clam (Ei-isis siliqua). Hook numbers 13 and 11 are 49 and 109% larger respectively than number 15 hooks in terms of overall size (maximum width x maximum length). A total of 39 900 hooks were fished in 45 sets and 35 species of fish and cephalopods were caught. As a group, 13 species of sea breams (Sparidae) dominated the catch by numbers (58%) and weight (73%). Six species of sea breams, along with the greater weever fish (Trachinus draco) accounted for 81% of the total catch by weight, with the common or white sea bream (Diplodus sargus) bring the most important (29%). Catch size distributions by hook size were, in general, highly overlapped for all species and hook size had little apparent effect on minimum size at capture. All hooks caught a wide range of sizes per species, but the catch rate (number of fish per 100 hooks) was significantly lower for the largest hook. Except for the black sea bream (Spondyliosoma cantharus), capture of illegally sized or immature fish was minimal. Small increases in average size with hook size were evident for four species: Diplodus sargus, D. vulgaris, Lithognathus mormyrus and Serranus cabrilla. No differences in size selectivity were detected for Boops boops, D. annularis, Spondyliosoma cantharus and Trachinus draco. A skew-normal model adequately described differences in size selectivity in five of six species. (C) 1996 International Council for the Exploration of the Sea

Based on four samples of Portuguese family-owned firmsdi) 185 young, low-sized family-owned firms; ii) 167 young, high-sized familyowned firms; iii) 301 old, low-sized family-owned firms; and iv) 353 old, high-sized family-owned firms d we show that age and size are fundamental characteristics in family-owned firms’ financing decisions. The multiple empirical evidence obtained allows us to conclude that the financing decisions of young, low-sized family-owned firms are quite close to the assumptions of Pecking Order Theory, whereas those of old, high-sized family-owned firms are quite close to what is forecast by Trade-Off Theory. The lesser information asymmetry associated with greater age, the lesser likelihood of bankruptcy associated with greater size, as well as the lesser concentration of ownership and management consequence of greater age and size, may be especially important in the financing decisions of family-owned firms. In addition, we find that GDP, interest rate and periods of crisis have a greater effect on the debt of young, low-sized family-owned firms than on that of family-owned firms of the remainder research samples.

This is a multidisciplinary study of the Brown Tuffs (BT) ash deposits of the Aeolian Islands in northern Sicily and representing the most voluminous and widely distributed tephra deposit in this region. A large dataset of major and minor elements of the BT glass has defined a range from K-series basaltic-andesites and trachy-andesites through to tephri-phonolites and trachytes that is consistent with the Vulcano magmatic system. Combined with stratigraphic information and new radiocarbon ages, four stratigraphic macro-units are defined: the Lower (80-56 ky; LBT), Intermediate (56-27 ky; IBT), Intermediate-upper (26-24 ky; IBT-upper) and Upper BT (24-6 ky; UBT). Glass compositional data provide constraints on proximal-distal correlations of the BT with deep-sea tephra layers in the Tyrrhenian and Adriatic Seas and new insights on the definition of the dispersal area of the BT eruptions. Sedimentological evidence of massive to stratified deposits and shear-related structures, coupled with grain-size and componentry analyses, have allowed to interpret the BT as the result of laterally-spreading, concentrated ash-rich PDCs, with a high potential of erosion of the substratum. Shear-structures similar to those observed in the field in the BT deposits have been reproduced by small-medium scale laboratory experiments carried out on ash granular flows, which have also allowed to describe the behaviour of ash-rich PDcs and their mobility depending on variations of slope-ratio, grain size and flow channelization. The resulting integrated dataset provides a contribution to the knowledge of the BT eruptions and insights on long-term hazard assessment in the study area. The eruptive dynamics of the BT may have a role in characterizing the whole magmatic system of the La Fossa Caldera on Vulcano, in the light of the geochemical link highlighted between the UBT macrounit and the early products of the La Fossa cone.

This thesis studies the state-of-the-art of phasor measurement units (PMUs) as well as their metrological requirements stated in the IEEE C37.118.1 and C37.118.2 Standards for guaranteeing correct measurement performances. Communication systems among PMUs and their possible applicability in the field of power quality (PQ) assessment are also investigated. This preliminary study is followed by an analysis of the working principle of real-time (RT) simulators and the importance of hardware-in-the-loop (HIL) implementation, examining the possible case studies specific for PMUs, including compliance tests which are one of the most important parts. The core of the thesis is focused on the implementation of a PMU model in the IEEE 5-bus network in Simulink and in the validation of the results using OPAL RT-4510 as a real-time simulator. An initial check allows one to get an idea about the goodness of the results in Simulink, comparing the PMU data with respect to the load-flow steady-state information. In this part, accuracy indices are also calculated for both voltage and current synchrophasors. The following part consists in the implementation of the same code in OPAL-RT 4510 simulator, after which an initial analysis is carried out in a qualitative way in order to get a sense of the goodness of the outcomes. Finally, the confirmation of the results is based on an examination of the attained voltage and current synchrophasors and accuracy indices coming from Simulink models and from OPAL system, using a Matlab script. This work also proposes suggestions for an upcoming operation of PMUs in a more complex system as the Digital Twin (DT) in order to improve the performances of the already-existing protection devices of the distribution system operator (DSO) for a future enhancement of power systems reliability.

Background: The natural history of Myotonic Dystrophy type 1 is largely unclear, longitudinal studies are lacking. Objectives: to collect clinical and laboratory data, to evaluate sleep disorders, somatic and autonomic skin fibres, neuropsychological and neuroradiological aspects in DM1 patients. Methods: 72 DM1 patients underwent a standardized clinical and neuroradiological evaluation performed by a multidisciplinary team during 3 years of follow-up. Results: longer disease duration was associated with higher incidence of conduction disorders and lower ejection fraction; higher CVF values were predictors for a reduced risk of cardiopathy. Lower functional pulmonary values were associated with class of expansion and were negatively associated with disease duration; arterial blood gas parameters were not associated with expansion size, disease duration nor with respiratory function test. Excessive daytime sleepiness was not associated with class of expansion nor with any of the clinical parameters examined. We detected apnoea in a large percentage of patients, without differences between the 3 genetic classes; higher CVF values were predictors for a reduced risk of apnoea. Skin biopsies demonstrated the presence of a subclinical small fibre neuropathy with involvement of the somatic fibres. The pupillometry study showed lower pupil size at baseline and a lower constriction response to light. The most affected neuropsychological domains were executive functions, visuoconstructional, attention and visuospatial tasks, with a worse performance of E1 patients in the visuoperceptual ability and social cognition tasks. MRI study demonstrated a decrease in the volumes of frontal, parietal, temporal, occipital cortices, accumbens, putamen nuclei and a more severe volume reduction of the isthmus cingulate, transverse temporal, superior parietal and temporal gyri in E2 patients. Discussion: only some clinical parameters could predict the risk of cardiopathy, pulmonary syndrome and sleep disorders, while other clinical aspects proved to be unpredictable, confirming the importance of periodic clinical follow-up of these patients.

The presented study aimed to evaluate the productive and physiological behavior of a 2D multileader apple training systems in the Italian environment both investigating the possibility to increase yield and precision crop load management resolution. Another objective was to find valuable thinning thresholds guaranteeing high yields and matching fruit market requirements. The thesis consists in three studies carried out in a Pink Lady®- Rosy Glow apple orchard trained as a planar multileader training system (double guyot). Fruiting leaders (uprights) dimension, crop load, fruit quality, flower and physiological (leaf gas exchanges and fruit growth rate) data were collected and analysed. The obtained results found that uprights present dependence among each other and as well as a mutual support during fruit development. However, individual upright fruit load and upright’s fruit load distribution on the tree (~ plant crop load) seems to define both upright independence from the other, and single upright crop load effects on the final fruit quality production. Correlations between fruit load and harvest fruit size were found and thanks to that valuable thinning thresholds, based on different vegetative parameters, were obtained. Moreover, it comes out that an upright’s fruit load random distribution presents a widening of those thinning thresholds, keeping un-altered fruit quality. For this reason, uprights resulted a partially physiologically-dependent plant unit. Therefore, if considered and managed as independent, then no major problems on final fruit quality and production occurred. This partly confirmed the possibility to shift crop load management to single upright. The finding of the presented studies together with the benefits coming from multileader planar training systems suggest a high potentiality of the 2D multileader training systems to increase apple production sustainability and profitability for Italian apple orchard, while easing the advent of automation in fruit production.

The aim of this thesis is to show and put together the results, obtained so far, useful to tackle a conjecture of graph theory proposed in 1954 by William Thomas Tutte. The conjecture in question is Tutte's 5-flow conjecture, which states that every bridgeless graph admits a nowhere-zero 5-flow, namely a flow with non-zero integer values between -4 and 4. We will start by giving some basics on graph theory, useful for the followings, and proving some results about flows on oriented graphs and in particular about the flow polynomial. Next we will treat two cases: graphs embeddable in the plane $\mathbb{R}^2$ and graphs embeddable in the projective plane $\mathbb{P}^2$. In the first case we will see the correlation between flows and colorings and prove a theorem even stronger than Tutte's conjecture, using the 4-color theorem. In the second case we will see how in 1984 Richard Steinberg used Fleischner's Splitting Lemma to show that there can be no minimal counterexample of the conjecture in the case of graphs in the projective plane. In the fourth chapter we will look at the theorems of François Jaeger (1976) and Paul D. Seymour (1981). The former proved that every bridgeless graph admits a nowhere-zero 8-flow, the latter managed to go even further showing that every bridgeless graph admits a nowhere-zero 6-flow. In the fifth and final chapter there will be a short introduction to the Tutte polynomial and it will be shown how it is related to the flow polynomial via the Recipe Theorem. Finally we will see some applications of flows through the study of networks and their properties.
