This paper compiles available information on osteological and other anatomical specimens of at least 51 species of aquatic mammals (34 extant, one recently extinct and 16 fossil) collected in Mexico between 1868 and 1990 and housed in 29 scientific institutions (18 in the USA, nine in Mexico, one in the Netherlands, and one in England). These collections contain a total of 1427 specimens representing 10 families of odontocetes (Squalodontidaet , Rhabdosteidaet , Pontoporiidae, Albireonidaet , Monodontidae, Phocoenidae, Delphinidae, Ziphiidae, Kogiidae, and Physeteridae), three of mysticetes (Cetotheridaet , Eschrichtiidae, and Balaenopteridae), three of carnivores (Otariidae, Phocidae, and Mustelidae) and one of sirenians (Trichechidae). Of the aquatic mammals recorded from Mexico, seven species are not represented by specimens (Stenella frontalis, Lagenodelphis hosei, Feresa attenuata, Hyperoodon sp., Eubalaena glacialis, Balaenoptera borealis, and Enhydra lutris). As academic libraries are increasingly supported by a matrix of databases functions, the use of data mining and visualization techniques offer significant potential for future collection development and service initiatives based on quantifiable data. While data collection techniques are still not standardized and results may be skewed because of granularity problems, faulty algorithms, and a host of other factors, useful baseline data is extractable and broad trends can be identified. The purpose of the current study is to provide an initial assessment of data associated with science monograph collection at the Marston Science Library (MSL), University of Florida. These sciences fall within the major Library of Congress Classification schedules of Q, S, and T, excluding R, TN, TR, and TT. Overall strategy of this project is to look at the potential science audiences within the university community and analyze data related to purchasing and circulation patterns, e-book usage, and interlibrary loan statistics. While a longitudinal study from 2004 to the present would be ideal, this paper presents the results from the academic year July 1, 2008 to June 30, 2009 which was chosen as the pilot period because all data reservoirs identified above were available.

The author uses clicker technology to incorporate polling and multiple choice question techniques into library instruction classes. Clickers can be used to give a keener understanding of how many students grasp the concepts presented in a specific class session. Typically, a student that aces a definition-type question will fail to answer an application-type question correctly. Immediate, electronic feedback helps to calibrate teaching approaches and gather data about learning outcomes. This presentation will analyze learning outcomes specific to scientific disciplines, and demonstrate the usefulness of clickers to engage and sustain student learning.

The main focus of this thesis is the use of high-throughput sequencing technologies in functional genomics (in particular in the form of ChIP-seq, chromatin immunoprecipitation coupled with sequencing, and RNA-seq) and the study of the structure and regulation of transcriptomes. Some parts of it are of a more methodological nature while others describe the application of these functional genomic tools to address various biological problems. A significant part of the research presented here was conducted as part of the ENCODE (ENCyclopedia Of DNA Elements) Project.

The first part of the thesis focuses on the structure and diversity of the human transcriptome. Chapter 1 contains an analysis of the diversity of the human polyadenylated transcriptome based on RNA-seq data generated for the ENCODE Project. Chapter 2 presents a simulation-based examination of the performance of some of the most popular computational tools used to assemble and quantify transcriptomes. Chapter 3 includes a study of variation in gene expression, alternative splicing and allelic expression bias on the single-cell level and on a genome-wide scale in human lymphoblastoid cells; it also brings forward a number of critical to the practice of single-cell RNA-seq measurements methodological considerations.

The second part presents several studies applying functional genomic tools to the study of the regulatory biology of organellar genomes, primarily in mammals but also in plants. Chapter 5 contains an analysis of the occupancy of the human mitochondrial genome by TFAM, an important structural and regulatory protein in mitochondria, using ChIP-seq. In Chapter 6, the mitochondrial DNA occupancy of the TFB2M transcriptional regulator, the MTERF termination factor, and the mitochondrial RNA and DNA polymerases is characterized. Chapter 7 consists of an investigation into the curious phenomenon of the physical association of nuclear transcription factors with mitochondrial DNA, based on the diverse collections of transcription factor ChIP-seq datasets generated by the ENCODE, mouseENCODE and modENCODE consortia. In Chapter 8 this line of research is further extended to existing publicly available ChIP-seq datasets in plants and their mitochondrial and plastid genomes.

The third part is dedicated to the analytical and experimental practice of ChIP-seq. As part of the ENCODE Project, a set of metrics for assessing the quality of ChIP-seq experiments was developed, and the results of this activity are presented in Chapter 9. These metrics were later used to carry out a global analysis of ChIP-seq quality in the published literature (Chapter 10). In Chapter 11, the development and initial application of an automated robotic ChIP-seq (in which these metrics also played a major role) is presented.

The fourth part presents the results of some additional projects the author has been involved in, including the study of the role of the Piwi protein in the transcriptional regulation of transposon expression in Drosophila (Chapter 12), and the use of single-cell RNA-seq to characterize the heterogeneity of gene expression during cellular reprogramming (Chapter 13).

The last part of the thesis provides a review of the results of the ENCODE Project and the interpretation of the complexity of the biochemical activity exhibited by mammalian genomes that they have revealed (Chapters 15 and 16), an overview of the expected in the near future technical developments and their impact on the field of functional genomics (Chapter 14), and a discussion of some so far insufficiently explored research areas, the future study of which will, in the opinion of the author, provide deep insights into many fundamental but not yet completely answered questions about the transcriptional biology of eukaryotes and its regulation.

Planning the management of data at proposal time and throughout its lifecycle is becoming increasingly important to funding agencies and is essential to ensure its current usability and long term preservation and access. This presentation will describe the work being done at the Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) to assist PIs with the preparation of data management plans and the role the Library has in this process. Data management does not mean simply storing information. The emphasis is now on sharing data and making research accessible. Topics to be covered include educating staff about the NSF data policy implementation, a data management survey, resources for proposal preparation, collaborating with other librarians, and next steps.

I have been asked by administration, how much of our collection could go into storage. They optimistically hoping for a room or two for faculty/staff offices, as some buildings need renovation or need to be closed due to safety issues. Clearly, much of the population believes that all/most library materials are available on-line – free. I will present the results of our survey’s of material held and available on-line and space “freed” thanks to archiving. How little space is freed.

The first concept of a new library was introduced in 2001 by a faculty member at the University of Texas Marine Science Institute. The suggestion for the construction of a new library was based on two specific reasons: existing library is located in one of the most vulnerable buildings to hurricane damage and the library has outgrown its current space. This presentation provides a general overview of the current status and changing needs of the Marine Science Library and how the idea of a new library finally became a reality

The thesis is divided into two parts. Part I generalizes a self-consistent calculation of residue shifts from SU3 symmetry, originally performed by Dashen, Dothan, Frautschi, and Sharp, to include the effects of non-linear terms. Residue factorizability is used to transform an overdetermined set of equations into a variational problem, which is designed to take advantage of the redundancy of the mathematical system. The solution of this problem automatically satisfies the requirement of factorizability and comes close to satisfying all the original equations.

Part II investigates some consequences of direct channel Regge poles and treats the problem of relating Reggeized partial wave expansions made in different reaction channels. An analytic method is introduced which can be used to determine the crossed-channel discontinuity for a large class of direct-channel Regge representations, and this method is applied to some specific representations.

It is demonstrated that the multi-sheeted analytic structure of the Regge trajectory function can be used to resolve apparent difficulties arising from infinitely rising Regge trajectories. Also discussed are the implications of large collections of "daughter trajectories."

Two things are of particular interest: first, the threshold behavior in direct and crossed channels; second, the potentialities of Reggeized representations for us in self-consistent calculations. A new representation is introduced which surpasses previous formulations in these two areas, automatically satisfying direct-channel threshold constraints while being capable of reproducing a reasonable crossed channel discontinuity. A scalar model is investigated for low energies, and a relation is obtained between the mass of the lowest bound state and the slope of the Regge trajectory.

The purpose of this article is to update and build on the approximate 10,000 item collection of the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institute Library. This article will present a history of Harbor Branch and its library, and a literature review, outlining the collection development methods of other marine science libraries and academic libraries. The article will relate brief histories of three marine science libraries. A comparative table is constructed to compare Harbor Branch Library with three marine science libraries. The methodology, or how the table was created, is explained. The comparative table will be shown and analyzed, and the results of the table discussed. Finally, some recommendations for improvement of the Harbor Branch Library will be presented.
