Reflexiones sobre la investigación acción en el abordaje de las memorias e identidades indígenas kollas en la ciudad de La Plata

Este trabajo tiene como finalidad presentar los principales lineamientos de lo que constituye mi proyecto tesis de investigación de posgrado explicitando los objetivos generales y particulares que se buscan alcanzar. Asimismo, se presentan cuestiones referidas a los desafíos que plantea el trabajo con entrevistas y observaciones participantes, especialmente las que atañen prácticas de grupos tradicionalmente silenciados y relegados al olvido como son las comunidades indígenas de Argentina. La posibilidad de entablar vínculos estrechos con miembros de estas comunidades que permitan dar cuenta de las experiencias personales y colectivas, las memorias sociales compartidas, las herencias ancestrales y culturales, constituye el resultado de un trabajo sostenido en el largo plazo. En este caso, el desarrollo de ésta investigación se plantea como un proceso conjunto y participativo, fruto de una experiencia de extensión universitaria que permitió el acercamiento y vinculación con la comunidad kolla, Asociación Civil Warmikunamanta Antipak Sonqokuna. En consecuencia, se buscará abrir a la reflexión sobre la producción de saberes en ciencias sociales, especialmente en los estudios sobre sociedades indígenas del siglo XXI

Striving for a common language: A white feminist parallel to Indigenous ways of knowing and researching

In Striving Towards a Common Language I outline an innovative methodology which consists of three strands encompassing an Indigenous-centred approach based on Indigenous Self-determination (participatory action research), relationship as central to socio-cultural dynamics, and feminist phenomenology. This methodology - which I call Living On the Ground was created in direct concert with 13 Indigenous women elders who were my hosts, teachers and walytja (family) as we worked together to create a dynamic cultural revitalisation project for their community, one of Australia's most remote Aboriginal settlements. I explain the processes I went through as a White Irish-Australian woman living with the women elders and their 11 dogs in a one room tin shed for two years, and tell of how the nexus of land, Ancestors, and the Tjukurrpa (Dreaming) combined with White cultural practices came to inspire a methodology which took the best from Indigenous and (White) feminist ways of knowing and of being. Ethical issues in social research

There are numerous ethical issues that one must consider when developing a research project; however, much discussion about ethics in health research has focused on experimental studies such as clinical trials. As a result, there remains some ambiguity as to the ethical issues that need to be considered in health-related social research. This paper outlines a number of important ethical issues that CAM researchers should be aware of when developing, running and writing up social research. Maintaining high ethical standards is extremely important in social research as it protects participants and researchers, improves the quality of the data retrieved and ensures that future researchers will have access to participants within the community. Finding common ground in team-based qualitative research using the convergent interviewing method

Research councils, agencies, and researchers recognize the benefits of team-based health research. However, researchers involved in large-scale team-based research projects face multiple challenges as they seek to identify epistemological and ontological common ground. Typically, these challenges occur between quantitative and qualitative researchers but can occur between qualitative researchers, particularly when the project involves multiple disciplinary perspectives. The authors use the convergent interviewing technique in their multidisciplinary research project to overcome these challenges. This technique assists them in developing common epistemological and ontological ground while enabling swift and detailed data collection and analysis. Although convergent interviewing is a relatively new method described primarily in marketing research, it compares and contrasts well with grounded theory and other techniques. The authors argue that this process provides a rigorous method to structure and refine research projects and requires researchers to identify and be accountable for developing a common epistemological and ontological position.

Making the link between engineering management and undergraduate research

This paper describes and analyses an innovative engineering management course that applies a project management framework in the context of a feasibility study for a prospective research project. The aim is to have students learn aspects of management that will be relevant from the outset of their professional career while simultaneously having immediate value in helping them to manage a research project and capstone design project in their senior year. An integral part of this innovation was the development of a web-based project management tool. While the main objectives of the new course design were achieved, a number of important lessons were learned that would guide the further development and continuous improvement of this course. The most critical of these is the need to achieve the optimum balance in the mind of the students between doing the project and critically analyzing the processes used to accomplish the work.

Critical reflections on international collaborative research

The excitement and challenge of undertaking research is an integral part of an academic staff member’s role. There are a multitude of reasons which encourage academics to undertake collaborative research. These range from the enthusiasm that arises from particular discipline interests, through to the pressure from tertiary contexts to be actively engaged in research and to produce research outputs. This paper uses the experiences of an international academic research team to explore the nature of the collaborative academic research process, including the perils and pitfalls, as well as the joys and enthusiasms. The three researchers are convinced that there are many positives to be gained from international collaboration. By critically reflecting on the dynamics of the research process employed by the tri-national team, (as against the research project itself), and identifying ‘lessons learned’ by the researchers themselves, suggestions for productive and enjoyable research relationships are offered.
