Spatial inequality in the Australian youth labour market: The role of neighbourhood composition

Australia has experienced a polarization of income and labour market outcomes over the past 20 years (GREGORY and HUNTER, 1995; HARDING, 1996). This has taken an increasingly spatial dimension (HUNTER. 1995a, 1995b), giving rise to concerns that the spatial pooling of disadvantage may hamper the labour market outcomes of youth growing up in poorer residential areas. This paper explores the role that the differential neighbourhood 'quality' of an individual's residential area at age 16 has on their labour market outcomes at age 18 and age 21. Evidence is found that youth who live in poorer quality neighbourhoods face an increased likelihood of being unemployed at both the age of 18 and 21, even after controlling for personal and family characteristics.

Determination of protein charge by capillary zone electrophoresis

The feasibility of employing classical electrophoresis theory to determine the net charge (valence) of proteins by capillary zone electrophoresis is illustrated in this paper. An outline of a procedure to facilitate the interpretation of mobility measurements is demonstrated by its application to a published mobility measurement for Staphylococcal nuclease at pH 8.9 that had been obtained by capillary zone electrophoresis. The significantly higher valence of +7.5 (cf. 5.6 from the same series of measurements) that has been reported on the basis of a charge ladder approach for charge determination signifies the likelihood that the latter generic approach may be prone to error arising from nonconformity of the experimental system with an inherent assumption that chemical modification or mutation of amino acid residues has no effect on the overall three-dimensional size and shape of the protein. Limitations of the ultracentrifugal approach for measuring the effective net charge of a macroion

Limitations have been detected in a recently published method for macroion valence determination by an ultracentrifugal procedure for quantifying the Dorman distribution of small ions in macroion solutions dialyzed against buffer supplemented with chromate as an indicator ion. The limitation reflects an implicit assumption that sedimentation velocity affords an unequivocal means of separating effects of chromate binding from those reflecting the Dorman redistribution of small ions. Although the assumed absence of significant Dorman redistribution of small ions across the sedimenting macroion boundary seemingly holds for some systems, this approximation is demonstrably invalid for others. Despite preliminary signs of promise, the ultracentrifugal procedure does not afford a simple, readily applied solution to the problem of unequivocal macroion valence determination. Ultimate strength of continuous composite beams in combined bending and shear

The contributions of the concrete slab and composite action to the vertical shear strength of continuous steel-concrete composite beams are ignored in current design codes, which result in conservative designs. This paper investigates the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams in combined bending and shear by using the finite element analysis method. A three-dimensional finite element model has been developed to account for the geometric and material nonlinear behaviour of continuous composite beams. The finite element model is verified by experimental results and then used to study the effects of the concrete slab and shear connection on the vertical shear strength. The moment-shear interaction strength of continuous composite beams is also investigated by varying the moment/ shear ratio. It is shown that the concrete slab and composite action significantly increase the ultimate strength of continuous composite beams. Based on numerical results, design models are proposed for the vertical shear strength and moment-shear interaction of continuous composite beams. The proposed design models, which incorporates the effects of the concrete slab, composite action, stud pullout failure and web shear buckling, are compared with experimental results with good agreement.
