This layer is a georeferenced raster image of the historic paper map entitled: Rand, McNally & Co.'s new 14 x 21 map of South America. It was published by Rand, McNally & Co. in 1902. Scale [1:19,008,000]. The image inside the map neatline is georeferenced to the surface of the earth and fit to a non-standard 'World Sinusoidal' projection with the central meridian at 60 degrees west. All map collar and inset information is also available as part of the raster image, including any inset maps, profiles, statistical tables, directories, text, illustrations, index maps, legends, or other information associated with the principal map. This map shows features such as drainage, cities and other human settlements, territorial boundaries, shoreline features, and more. Relief shown by hachures. Includes inset of the Galapagos Islands. This layer is part of a selection of digitally scanned and georeferenced historic maps from the Harvard Map Collection and the Harvard University Library as part of the Open Collections Program at Harvard University project: Organizing Our World: Sponsored Exploration and Scientific Discovery in the Modern Age. Maps selected for the project correspond to various expeditions and represent a range of regions, originators, ground condition dates, scales, and purposes.

The basement at Ocean Drilling Program (ODP) Sites 677 and 678 originated from the Galapagos spreading center of the Costa Rica Rift and has moved about 200 km over the last 6 m.y. (Fig. 1) (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1987, 1988; Scientific Drilling Party, 1987). Sediments about 300 m thick cover basement so young that basal sediments at Sites 677 and 678 have been reheated up to 60?-70?C at Site 677 and altered to limestone and/or chert (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). Sediments from both sites indicate (1) a high sedimentation rate (about 48 m/m.y.) and (2) biogenic silica and carbonate as the main constituents of sediments (Table 1) (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). Heatflow observations and measurements of interstitial water chemistry around the sites show that Site 677 is in a lower heatflow zone (166 mW/m**2; 1°12.14'N, 83°44.22'W) whereas Site 678 is located in a zone of higher heat flow (250 mW/m**2; 1°13.01'N, 83°43.39'W) (Langseth et al., 1988; Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). In the flank hydrothermal systems, circulating solution is moving upward through the sedimentary column in zones of higher heat flow while it is moving downward in zones of lower heat flow (Anderson and Skilbeck, 1981). The chemistry of the interstitial waters is modified by several processes such as (1) diagenetic reactions and (2) advective and (3) diffusive transports of dissolved constituents. Analyses of Ca2+ and Mg2+ in interstitial waters from Sites 677 and 678 show that their profiles are mainly controlled by advective transport (Shipboard Scientific Party, 1988). In contrast, the interstitial-water profiles for NH4+, Si, and PO4[3-] are highly affected by reactions in the sediments. Site 677 offers a good opportunity to investigate amino acids in the interstitial waters because sediments of similar compositions have been deposited at constant rates of sedimentation. There are few previous works on amino acid distributions in interstitial waters (Henrichs and Parrington, 1979; Michaelis et al., 1982; Henrichs et al., 1984; Henrichs and Farrington, 1987; Ishizuka et al., 1988). In this chapter, we report (1) Rock-Eval analysis and (2) the composition of total hydrolyzable and dissolved free amino acids (THAA and DFAA, respectively) in the interstitial waters. Our objectives are to discuss (1) the possible origin of organic materials, (2) the characteristics of THAA and DFAA, and (3) their relationships in interstitial waters.

It has been established (with use of analytical electron microscopy) that Fe-Mn crusts from two seamounts of the Sea of Japan consist predominantly of an association of birnessite minerals including Ca-birnessite and clinobirnessite. The latter is represented by twins, which form regular integrowths with 14 Å Ca-birnessite. Ore material from the third seamount (Tarasov submarine volcano) consists only of fibrous todorokite, which forms spherulitic nodules, blocks, and laminar formations. Its chemical composition is close to that of todorokite from the Galapagos rift zone.

Deep basement penetration during Legs 69 and 70 at Hole 504B in the Panama Basin allowed the recovery of a 561.5-meter sequence of basaltic pillows, thin flows, and breccias interspersed with thick massive flows. The lavas, which are aphyric to moderately plagioclase-olivine-clinopyroxene phyric, are petrologically indistinguishable from typical mid-ocean-ridge basalts (MORB). Some units are distinctive in that they carry accessory chrome-spinel microphenocrysts or emerald green clinopyroxene phenocrysts. Major and trace element analyses were carried out on 67 samples using X-ray fluorescence techniques. The basalts resemble normal MORB in terms of major elements. However, the trace element analyses show that most of the basalts are characterized by very strong depletion in the more incompatible elements compared with, for instance, normal (N type) MORB from the Atlantic at 22°N. Interdigitated with these units are one or two units that have distinctly higher incompatible element concentrations similar to those in basalts of the transitional (T) type from the Reykjanes Ridge (63°N in the Mid-Atlantic Ridge). All the basalts appear to have undergone some high-level crystal fractionation, although this has not proceeded to the extent of yielding ferrobasalts as it has at the adjacent Galapagos Spreading Center or along the East Pacific Rise. The magnetic anomalies are of lower amplitude than in the latter two regions, which suggests that the absence of ferrobasalts may be a general feature of the ocean crust generated at the Costa Rica Rift. The presence of two distinct magma types, one strongly depleted and the other moderately enriched in incompatible elements, suggests that magma chambers at the spreading center are discontinuous rather than continuous and that there is some chemical heterogeneity in the underlying mantle source. Observed variations in incompatible element ratios of basalts from the more depleted group could, however, reflect mixing between these two magma types. In general it would appear that the mantle feeding the Costa Rica Rift is significantly more depleted in incompatible trace elements than that feeding the Mid-Atlantic Ridge.

Hydrothermal deposits "sensu stricto" have been recovered during the FAMOUS cruise and Leg 54 of the Deep Sea Drilling Project near the Galapagos Spreading Centre. The studied sediments, mainly composed of clay material, have very poor REE concentrations, below about ten ppm. The shale-normalized patterns are characterized by a significant enrichment in heavy rare earths and show a negative Ce anomaly. The magnitude of this anomaly fluctuates but is generally lower than the seawater Ce anomaly. The geochemical characteristics of these hydrothermal deposits are in contrast with those of metalliferous sediments which are more enriched in trace elements, especially in REE.

Clay minerals recovered from the Galapagos hydrothermal mounds (Holes 506C, 507D, and 509B) are mainly iron-rich nontronite-like minerals enriched in potassium. Nontronites from Hole 509B show a distinct tendency to become micaceous toward the lower beds of clay sediments. Mn-crusts consist mainly of todorokite or a mixture of todorokite and nontronite. Minerals of clay and Mnrich sediments in the mounds originated from hydrothermal solutions of uncertain origin. Pelagic oozes from hydrothermal mounds and from areas between mounds (Hole 506D) consist mainly of calcite. In the carbonate beds on or near the hydrothermal mounds an admixture of smectite is often found.

To investigate the incidence of non-lethal predation in Southern Hemisphere whales, more than 3400 fluke-identification photographs from resight histories of 1436 east Australian humpback whales were examined for evidence of predatory markings. Photographs were obtained from 1984 to 1996 at various locations along the east coast of Australia, from northern Queensland to southern New South Wales. Photographs were classified in terms of the level and type of scarring. The possible predator and whether the markings appeared fresh were also noted. In all, 17% of identified east Australian humpbacks possessed some form of predatory scarring, 57% of which was minor and 43% major. Almost all predatory scarring was consistent with that inflicted by killer whales. Only three whales demonstrated an increase in the level of predatory scarring after their first sightings. Two incidents of fresh scarring were recorded, and one fatal killer whale attack on a humpback whale calf was directly observed. The overall level of predatory scarring found in this study is comparable to those found in studies for Northern Hemisphere humpback whales. The low incidence of adult whales showing their first sign of predatory scarring after their initial sighting, and the small number possessing recent scarring, support the idea that east Australian humpback whales experience most predatory attacks early in life.
