Two new Fe-III complexes, [Fe2L2(mu-OMe)(2)(NCS)(2)] (1) and [Fe2L2(mu-N-3)(2)(N-3)(2)] (2), have been synthesized using a N,N,O-donor tridentate Schiff base ligand HL {2-[(2-dimethylaminoethylimino)methyl]phenol}, the condensation product of salicylaldehyde and N,N-dimethyl-1,2-diaminoethane. The complexes were characterized by X-ray structural analyses and variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements. Both crystal structures are centrosymmetric dimers containing two Fe-III atoms, which are bridged in compound 1 by two methoxy anions and in compound 2 by two mu-1,1-azides. The chelating tridentate Schiff base and a terminal thiocyanato (for 1) or azido (for 2) group complete the hexacoordination of the distorted octahedral environment of each iron center. The magnetic properties of compound 1 show the presence of antiferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by double methoxy bridges (J = -29.45 cm(-1)). Compound 2 shows the presence of very weak ferromagnetic exchange interactions mediated by double mu-1,1-N-3 bridges (J = 1.08 cm(-1)).

Three new MnIII complexes, {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OCn)](ClO4)}(n) (1), {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OPh)](ClO4)}(n) (2) and {[Mn-2(salen)(2)(OBz)](ClO4)}(2) (3) (where salen = N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane dianion, OCn = cinnamate, OPh = phenylacetate and OBz = benzoate), have been synthesized and characterized structurally and magnetically. The crystal structures reveal that all three structures contain syn-anti carboxylatebridged dimeric [Mn-2(salen)(2)(OOCR)](+) cations (OOCR = bridging carboxylate) that are joined together by weak Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) interactions to form infinite alternating chain structures in 1 and 2, but the relatively long Mn center dot center dot center dot O(phenoxo) distance [3.621(2)angstrom] in 3 restricts this structure to tetranuclear units. Magnetic studies showed that 1 and 2 exhibited magnetic long-range order at T-N = 4.0 and 4.6 K (T-N = Neel transition temperature), respectively, to give spin-canted antiferromagnetic structures. Antiferromagnetic coupling was also observed in 3 but no peaks were recorded in the field-cooled magnetization (FCM) or zero-field-cooled magnetization (ZFCM) data, indicating that 3 remained paramagnetic down to 2 K. This dominant antiferromagnetic coupling is attributed to the carboxylate bridges. The ferromagnetic coupling expected due to the Mn-O(phenoxo)center dot center dot center dot Mn bridge plays an auxiliary role in the magnetic chain, but is an essential component of the bulk magnetic properties of the material.

The preparation, crystal structures and magnetic properties of two new isoelectronic and isomorphous formate-and nitrite-bridged 1D chains of Mn(III)-salen complexes, [Mn(salen)(HCOO)](n) (1) and [Mn(salen)(NO2)](n) (2), where salen is the dianion of N,N'-bis(salicylidene)-1,2-diaminoethane, are presented. The structures show that the salen ligand coordinates to the four equatorial sites of the metal ion and the formate or nitrite ions coordinate to the axial positions to bridge the Mn(III)-salen units through a syn-anti mu-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' coordination mode. Such a bridging mode is unprecedented in Mn(III) for formate and in any transition metal ion for nitrite. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements of complexes 1 and 2 indicate the presence of ferromagnetic exchange interactions with J values of 0.0607 cm(-1) (for 1) and 0.0883 cm(-1) (for 2). The ac measurements indicate negligible frequency dependence for 1 whereas compound 2 exhibits a decrease of chi(ac)' and a concomitant increase of chi(ac)'' on elevating frequency around 2 K. This finding is an indication of slow magnetization reversal characteristic of single-chain magnets or spin-glasses. The mu-nitrito-1 kappa O:2 kappa O' bridge seems to be a potentially superior magnetic coupler to the formate bridge for the construction of single-molecule/-chain magnets as its coupling constant is greater and the chi(ac)' and chi(ac)'' show frequency dependence.

The self-consistent spin-polarized band-structure calculation of ferromagnetic compound MnBiAl in its low-temperature phase has been performed. In this paper the calculation results are given. Comparison with the results of MnBi is performed in order to find the effect on electronic structure by doping with Al.

In low-temperature anti-ferromagnetic LaMnO3, strong and localized electronic interactions among Mn 3d electrons prevent a satisfactory description from standard local density and generalized gradient approximations in density functional theory calculations. Here we show that the strong on-site electronic interactions are described well only by using direct and exchange corrections to the intra-orbital Coulomb potential. Only DFT+U calculations with explicit exchange corrections produce a balanced picture of electronic, magnetic and structural observables in agreement with experiment. To understand the reason, a rewriting of the functional form of the +U corrections is presented that leads to a more physical and transparent understanding of the effect of these correction terms. The approach highlights the importance of Hund’s coupling (intra-orbital exchange) in providing anisotropy across the occupation and energy eigenvalues of the Mn d states. This intra-orbital exchange is the key to fully activating the Jahn-Teller distortion, reproducing the experimental band gap and stabilizing the correct magnetic ground state in LaMnO3. The best parameter values for LaMnO3 within the DFT(PBEsol)+U framework are determined to be U = 8 eV and J = 1.9 eV.

A new series of non-stoichiometric sulfides Ga1−xGexV4S8−δ (0≤x≤1; δ≤0.23) has been synthesized at high temperatures by heating stoichiometric mixtures of the elements in sealed quartz tubes. The samples have been characterized by powder X-ray diffraction, SQUID magnetometry and electrical transport-property measurements. Structural analysis reveals that a solid solution is formed throughout this composition range, whilst thermogravimetric data reveal sulfur deficiency of up to 2.9% in the quaternary phases. Magnetic measurements suggest that the ferromagnetic behavior of the end-member phase GaV4S8 is retained at x≤0.7; samples in this composition range showing a marked increase in magnetization at low temperatures. By contrast Ga0.25Ge0.75V4S8−δ appears to undergo antiferromagnetic ordering at ca. 15 K. All materials with x≠1 are n-type semiconductors whose resistivity falls by almost six orders of magnitude with decreasing Ga content, whilst the end-member phase GeV4S8−δ is a p-type semiconductor. The results demonstrate that the physical properties are determined principally by the degree of electron filling of narrow-band states arising from intracluster V–V interactions.

We investigate the formation of ferrihydrite nanoparticles (NPs) by hydrolysis of the Fe(III) alkoxide Fe(O(t)Bu)(3). Controlled amounts of water, up to 3.0 vol%, were added to the precursor solution yielding a series of hydrolyzed samples ranging from P0.0 (the unreacted precursor) to P3.0. X-ray diffraction (XRD) analysis evidenced the formation of high-crystalline ferrihydrite NP in sample P3.0, with grain size estimate of about 3.2 nm. The transition from the molecular precursor to the formation of crystalline magnetic NPs was followed through magnetization measurements M(T) and M(H), as well as Mossbauer spectroscopy (MS). M(T) measurements indicate a paramagnetic (PM) behavior for sample P0.0, characteristic of binuclear Fe-O-Fe units, which evolves to a superparamagnetic (SPM) behavior, with an energy barrier for the blocking process estimated for sample P3.0 as E(a) = 4.9 x 10(-21) J (E(a)/k(B) = 355 K), resulting in a high effective anisotropy constant K(eff) = 290 kJ/m(3). Magnetization loops at 5 K progressively change from PM-like to ferromagnetic-like shape upon increasing the hydrolysis process, although hysteresis (H(c) approximate to 500 Oe) only is apparent for P2.0 and higher. MS spectra at room temperature are PM/SPM doublets for all samples, while the MS spectra at T = 4.2 K reveal increasingly well-defined magnetic ordering as hydrolysis of the precursor stepwise progresses until well-crystallized ferrihydrite particles are formed. We consider a non-equilibrium three-state model whose dynamics is Markovian and displays the same symmetry as the three-state Potts model, i.e. the transition rates are invariant under the cyclic permutation of the states. Unlike the Potts model, detailed balance is, in general, not satisfied. The aging and the stationary properties of the model defined on a square lattice are obtained by means of large-scale Monte Carlo simulations. We show that the phase diagram presents a critical line, belonging to the three-state Potts universality class, that ends at a point whose universality class is that of the Voter model. Aging is considered on the critical line, at the Voter point and in the ferromagnetic phase.

We introduce a Sherrington-Kirkpatrick spin-glass model with the addition of elastic degrees of freedom. The problem is formulated in terms of an effective four-spin Hamiltonian in the pressure ensemble, which can be treated by the replica method. In the replica-symmetric approximation, we analyze the pressure-temperature phase diagram, and obtain expressions for the critical boundaries between the disordered and the ordered (spin-glass and ferromagnetic) phases. The second-order para-ferromagnetic border ends at a tricritical point, beyond which the transition becomes discontinuous. We use these results to make contact with the temperature-concentration phase diagrams of mixtures of hydrogen-bonded crystals.

We study the thermodynamic properties and the phase diagrams of a multi-spin antiferromagnetic spherical spin-glass model using the replica method. It is a two-sublattice version of the ferromagnetic spherical p-spin glass model. We consider both the replica-symmetric and the one-step replica-symmetry-breaking solutions, the latter being the most general solution for this model. We find paramagnetic, spin-glass, antiferromagnetic and mixed or glassy antiferromagnetic phases. The phase transitions are always of second order in the thermodynamic sense, but the spin-glass order parameter may undergo a discontinuous change.

The hysteretic behavior of mechanically alloyed nanocomposites FeCo + MnO was studied at high temperatures. These composites present an unusual high and thermally stable coercivity, compared to FeCo milled at equal conditions. Coercivity enhancement was observed in hysteresis loops obtained between room temperature and 750 K. It is attributed to the isolation of the FeCo ferromagnetic particles by the paramagnetic MnO (T(N) = 120 K). The M(rev)(M(irr))(H) curves are clearly linear for the composite, indicating that coherent rotation is the reversal mechanism in these materials. (C) 2008 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The magnetic properties of Co nanostructures and a Co monolayer on W(001) have been studied in the framework of density functional theory. Different geometries such as planar and three-dimensional clusters have been considered, with cluster sizes varying between 2 and 13 atoms. The calculations were performed using the real-space linear muffin-tin orbital method (RS-LMTO-ASA). With respect to the stability of the magnetic state, we predict an antiferromagnetic (AFM) structure for the ground state of the planar Co clusters and a ferromagnetic (FM) state for the three-dimensional clusters. For the three-dimensional clusters, one of the AFM arrangements leads to frustration due to the competing FM and AFM exchange interactions between different atoms in the cluster, and gives rise to a non-collinear state with energy close to that of the FM ground state. The relative role of the Co-Co and Co-W exchange interactions is also investigated. (C) 2007 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The magnetic behavior of polycrystalline yttrium orthoferrite was studied from the experimental and theoretical points of view. Magnetization measurements up to 170 kOe were carried out on a single-phase YFeO3 sample synthesized from heterobimetallic alkoxides. The complex interplay between weak-ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions, observed in the experimental M(H) curves, was successfully simulated by locally minimizing the magnetic energy of two interacting Fe sublattices. The resulting values of exchange field (H-E = 5590 kOe), anisotropy field (H-A = 0.5 kOe) and Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya antisymmetric field (H-D = 149 kOe) are in good agreement with previous reports on this system. The title radical (F4BlmNN) is a stable nitronylnitroxide that forms hydrogen-bonded NH center dot center dot center dot ON chains in the solid state. The chains assemble the F4BlmNN molecules to form stacked contacts between the radical groups, in a geometry that is expected to exhibit ferromagnetic (FM) exchange based on spin polarization (SP) models. The experimental magnetic susceptibility of F4BlmNN confirms the expectation, showing 1-D Heisenberg chain FM exchange behavior over 1.8-300 K with an intrachain exchange constant Of J(chain)/k = +22 K. At lower temperatures, ac magnetic susceptibility and variable field heat capacity measurements show that F4BlmNN acts as a quasi-1-D ferromagnet. The dominant ferromagnetic exchange interaction is attributable to overlap between spin orbitals of molecules within the hydrogen-bonded chains, consistent with the SP model expectations. The chains appear to be antiferromagnetically exchange coupled, giving cusps in the ac susceptibility and zero field heat capacity at lower temperatures. The results indicate that the sample orders magnetically at about 0.7 K. The magnetic heat capacity ordering cusp shifts to lower temperatures as external magnetic field increases, consistent with forming a bulk antiferromagnetic phase below a Neel temperature of T-N(0) = 0.72 K, with a critical field of H-c approximate to 1800 Oe. The interchain exchange is estimated to be zJ/k congruent to (-)0.1 K.

The physical properties of the La(0.6)Y(0.1)Ca(0.3)MnO(3) compound have been investigated, focusing on the magnetoresistance phenomenon studied by both dc and ac electrical transport measurements. X-ray diffraction and scanning electron microscopy analysis of ceramic samples prepared by the sol-gel method revealed that specimens are single phase and have average grain size of similar to 0.5 mu m. Magnetization and 4-probe dc electrical resistivity rho(T,H) experiments showed that a ferromagnetic transition at T(C) similar to 170 K is closely related to a metal-insulator (MI) transition occurring at essentially the same temperature T(MI). The magnetoresistance effect was found to be more pronounced at low applied fields (H <= 2.5 T) and temperatures close to the MI transition. The ac electrical transport was investigated by impedance spectroscopy Z(f,T,H) under applied magnetic field H up to 1 T. The Z(f,T,H) data exhibited two well-defined relaxation processes that exhibit different behaviors depending on the temperature and applied magnetic field. Pronounced effects were observed close to T (C) and were associated with the coexistence of clusters with different electronic and magnetic properties. In addition, the appreciable decrease of the electrical permittivity epsilon`(T,H) is consistent with changes in the concentration of e(g) mobile holes, a feature much more pronounced close to T (C).
