This article explores Soviet cinema and the Spanish Civil War, 1936-1939. The article focuses on three separate components of Moscow’s cinematic operations vis-à-vis the Spanish imbroglio: 1.) the distribution of Soviet-made feature films in the Loyalist zone, 2.) the production of Soviet propaganda newsreels on Spanish subjects intended for distribution within the Soviet Union, and 3.) the significance of the Spanish war for Soviet cinema throughout the balance of the Bolshevik period. The narrative and conclusions herein are supported by new research from archives in both Spain and the Russian Federation, as well as analyses of films rarely if ever discussed in the scholarly literature, either within film studies or twentieth century European history.

NDRG1 is phosphorylated by SGK1 (but not PKB) in vivo at three residues each contained within three nonapeptide repeats. Here, we demonstrate that this nonapeptide, like the NDRG1 protein, is phosphorylated by SGK1, but not by PKBalpha or RSK1 in vitro. The inability of PKBa and RSK1 to phosphorylate the nonapeptide was traced to residues n + 1, n + 2 and n - 4 (where n is the phosphorylation site). Changing them from Ser, Glu and Ser to Phe, Ala and Pro, respectively, transformed the nonapeptide into an excellent substrate for PKBalpha and RSK1. Our results identify a specific substrate for SGK1 and may facilitate detection of additional physiological substrates for this enzyme. (C) 2005 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. We describe the activation of Wnt signalling in mesangial cells by CCN2. CCN2 stimulates phosphorylation of LRP6 and GSK-3 beta resulting in accumulation and nuclear localisation of beta-catenin, TCF/LEF activity and expression of Wnt targets. This is coincident with decreased phosphorylation of beta-catenin on Ser 33/37 and increased phosphorylation on Tyr142. DKK-1 and LRP6 siRNA reversed CCN2's effects. Microarray analyses of diabetic patients identified differentially expressed Wnt components. beta-Catenin is increased in type 1 diabetic and UUO mice and in in vitro models of hyperglycaemia and hypertension. These findings suggest that Wnt/CCN2 signalling plays a role in the pathogenesis of diabetic nephropathy. (C) 2011 Federation of European Biochemical Societies. Published by Elsevier B.V. Recent studies implicate the collagen receptor, glycoprotein VI (GPVI) in activation of platelet 12-lipoxygenase (p12-LOX). Herein, we show that GPVI-stimulated 12-hydro(peroxy)eicosatetraenoic acid (H(P)ETE) synthesis is inhibited by palmityl trifluromethyl ketone or oleyloxyethyl phosphocholine, but not bromoenol lactone, implicating secretory and cytosolic, but not calcium-independent phospholipase A(2) (PLA(2)) isoforms. Also, following GPVI activation, 12-LOX co-immunoprecipitates with both cytosolic and secretory PLA(2), (sPLA(2)). Finally, venoms containing sPLA(2) acutely activate p12-LOX in a dose-dependent manner. This study shows that platelet 12-H(P)ETE generation utilizes arachidonate substrate from both c- and sPLA(2) and that 12-LOX functionally associates with both PLA(2) isoforms.
