QFT control for vibration reduction in structures equipped with MR dampers

This short paper addresses the problem of designing a QFT (quantitative feedback theory) based controllers for the vibration reduction in a 6-story building structure equipped with shear-mode magnetorheological dampers. A new methodology is proposed for characterizing the nonlinear hysteretic behavior of the MR damper through the uncertainty template in the Nichols chart. The design procedure for QFT control design is briefly presented

New delay-dependent stability criteria for uncertain neutral systems with mixed time-varying delays and nonlinear perturbations

The problem of stability analysis for a class of neutral systems with mixed time-varying neutral, discrete and distributed delays and nonlinear parameter perturbations is addressed. By introducing a novel Lyapunov-Krasovskii functional and combining the descriptor model transformation, the Leibniz-Newton formula, some free-weighting matrices, and a suitable change of variables, new sufficient conditions are established for the stability of the considered system, which are neutral-delay-dependent, discrete-delay-range dependent, and distributeddelay-dependent. The conditions are presented in terms of linear matrix inequalities (LMIs) and can be efficiently solved using convex programming techniques. Two numerical examples are given to illustrate the efficiency of the proposed method

Lactococcus garvieae endocarditis in a native valve identified by MALDI-TOF MS and PCR-based 16s rRNA in Spain: A case report.

Lactococcus garvieae is a Gram-positive, catalase negative coccus arranged in pairs or short chains, well-known as a fish pathogen. We report a case of Infective Endocarditis (IE) by L. garvieae in a native valve from a 68-year-old male with unknown history of contact with raw fish and an extensive history of heart disease. This case highlights the reliability of MALDI-TOF MS compared to conventional methods in the identification of rare microorganisms like this.

An LMI approach to H∞ synchronization of second-order neutral master-slave systems

The H∞ synchronization problem of the master and slave structure of a second-order neutral master-slave systems with time-varying delays is presented in this paper. Delay-dependent sufficient conditions for the design of a delayed output-feedback control are given by Lyapunov-Krasovskii method in terms of a linear matrix inequality (LMI). A controller, which guarantees H∞ synchronization of the master and slave structure using some free weighting matrices, is then developed. A numerical example has been given to show the effectiveness of the method

PPAR-mediated activity of phthalates: A link to the obesity epidemic?

The endocrine disruption hypothesis asserts that exposure to small amounts of some chemicals in the environment may interfere with the endocrine system and lead to harmful effects in wildlife and humans. Many of these chemicals may interact with members of the nuclear receptor superfamily. Peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors (PPARs) are such candidate members, which interact with many different endogenous and exogenous lipophilic compounds. More particularly, the roles of PPARs in lipid and carbohydrate metabolism raise the question of their activation by a sub-class of pollutants, tentatively named "metabolic disrupters". Phthalates are abundant environmental micro-pollutants in Europe and North America and may belong to this class. Mono-ethyl-hexyl-phthalate (MEHP), a metabolite of the widespread plasticizer di-ethyl-hexyl-phthalate (DEHP), has been found in exposed organisms and interacts with all three PPARs. A thorough analysis of its interactions with PPARgamma identified MEHP as a selective PPARgamma modulator, and thus a possible contributor to the obesity epidemic.

Information technologies and communication between parents and children

This is an exploratory study that aims, on the one hand, to examine in more detail how children between 12 and 16 years of age use different audiovisual technologies, what they feel and think when using them, and whom they like to speak to about such experiences. On the other hand, we look more deeply into the interactions between adults and children, particularly between parents and their children, in relation to these technologies when children use them at home or in other places. We analysed responses to questionnaires with several common items, administered separately to parents and children. Children’s responses reflect an important level of dissatisfaction when talking with different adults about media activities. Our findings support the thesis that more and more children socialise through new information and communication technologies with little or no recourse to adult criteria, giving rise to the emergence of specific children’s cultures. Crossing of the responses of parents and those of their own children shows us which aspects of media reality adults overestimate or underestimate in comparison to children, and to what degree certain judgements coincide and differ between generations. The results can be applied to the improvement of relations between adults and adolescents, taking advantage of adolescents’ strong motivation to engage in activities using audiovisual media

RESUMO Este trabalho apresenta uma síntese simplificada do processo de elaboração de lei, a partir de sua conceituação jurídica, requisitos, hierarquia das normas, etapas da tramitação nas duas casas do Congresso Nacional, necessidade de quorum e sanção presidencial até um projeto de lei ser transformado em lei. Tem por objetivo auxiliar os enfermeiros e outras pessoas interessadas no assunto a participar no desenvolvimento de sua profissão através de leis que atendam melhor aos interesses profissionais da classe.

Mais quel monde voulons-nous? Entretien avec Maïté Debats, féministe engagée de Toulouse (F)

Depuis plus de 30 ans, Maïté se bat sur le terrain avec les femmes, spécialement avec des femmes victimes de violences conjugales. Elle est cofondatrice de l'APIAF (Association pour la Promotion d'Initiatives Autonomes des Femmes), centre d'accueil pour des femmes en difficulté. « Lieu d'écoute, d'information, d'orientation et d'insertion pour les femmes en difficulté, avec un accueil spécifique pour les femmes victimes de violences conjugales », l'APIAF fut créée à Toulouse en 1981 et adhère à la Fédération Nationale Solidarité Femmes (FNSF). Chaque année, l'APIAF accueille environ 1000 femmes victimes de violences conjugales et 1200 enfants. Maïté participe aussi au comité d'éthique et au service de formation de la FNSF. Quartiers Nord de Toulouse. Durant cette période, en tant que militante féministe, elle s'est intéressée à la pratique culturelle de la vidéo et à son utilisation comme outil d'expression engagée. Plusieurs de ses documentaires et reportages ont été tournés avec Carol Prestat. Maïté utilise cet outil dans ses interventions, tant auprès des femmes - parmi les documentaires qu'elle a réalisés : "Cinq femmes et des mariages", "Des dames comme tout le monde" (avec des femmes chômeuses) et "Prends garde à toi!" (sur l'intervention professionnelle auprès de femmes victimes de violences conjugales) - que des jeunes - une de ces vidéos, « Salah, Malik, Beurs », a donné naissance au groupe de musique Zebda. Ce travail avec les jeunes l'a amenée à mettre sur pied l'Association Vitécri, visant à réaliser des films et organiser des activités culturelles avec des jeunes des quartiers populaires issu·e·s de l'immigration postcoloniale.

Anàlisi cinètica experimental d'una recuita de recuperació mitjançant una tècnica de calorimetria diferencial (DSC)

En l’àmbit de la indústria metal·lúrgica és molt freqüent l’ús de tècniques de conformació per deformació (treball en fred o en calent) per tal de donar forma, a metalls o aliatges metàl·lics. Mecànicament, el treball en fred provoca l’increment de la duresa i de la resistència a la tensió i, per contra, la reducció de la ductilitat, de la conductivitat elèctrica i de la resistència a la corrosió. Per tal de millorar les propietats mecàniques afectades per la reducció és on pren rellevància l’ús de la recuita. La recuita és un tractament tèrmic format per tres etapes: la recuperació, la recristal·lització i el creixement del gra. En el present projecte analitzem en detall la recuperació. El projecte té com a objectiu fer l’estudi experimental de la cinètica, durant la recuita de recuperació, d’un aliatge mecànic. Aquest estudi permetrà determinar els paràmetres més rellevants per tal de descriure com evolucionen l’estructura i les propietats del metall durant un tractament tèrmic, en funció del temps de tractament i la temperatura

Interference of pollutants with PPARs: endocrine disruption meets metabolism.

The concept of endocrine disruption emerged over a decade ago with the observation that several natural or industrial compounds can interfere with estrogen and androgen signaling, and thereby affect both male and female reproductive functions. Since then, many endocrine-disrupting chemicals (EDCs) have been identified and the concept has been broadened to receptors regulating other aspects of endocrine pathways. In that context, interference of EDCs with receptors regulating metabolism has been proposed as a factor that could contribute to metabolic diseases such as obesity and diabetes. We review recent studies showing that several pollutants, including phthalates and organotins, interfere with PPAR (peroxisome proliferator-activated receptors) nuclear receptors and may thereby affect metabolic homeostasis. Particular emphasis is given on the mechanisms of action of these compounds. However, unlike what has been suspected, we provide evidence from mouse models suggesting that in utero exposure to the phthalate ester di-ethyl-hexyl-phthalate most likely does not predispose to obesity. Collectively, these studies define a subclass of EDCs that perturb metabolic signaling and that we propose to define as metabolic disruptors.

El smartphone y sus implicaciones de marketing y antropológicas: la situación de España respecto al entorno internacional

Aquest treball analitza la tecnologia del Smartphone i les implicacions d’aquests dins d’Espanya en relació al màrqueting i a l’antropologia, principalment. El Smartphone s’ha convertit en un utensili que va més enllà d’un simple telèfon, convertint-se en agenda, ràdio, televisió i bastants aplicacions més. El grau de penetració d’aquest s’ha incrementat exponencial-ment, especialment en menors d’edat, i això, està modificant la nostra forma d’actuar i mantenir relacions, i per tant les opcions de màrqueting disponibles a través del mateix, presents i futures.

Estudo da estrutura da representação social da autonomia profissional em enfermagem

Buscou-se analisar a estrutura da representação social da autonomia profissional construída por enfermeiros na cidade de Petrópolis. Adotou-se como referencial a Teoria das Representações Sociais, de acordo com a abordagem estrutural. A coleta de dados foi realizada através da técnica de evocação livre ao termo autonomia profissional com 83 enfermeiros, 42 da rede básica e 41 da rede hospitalar. Os dados foram analisados através da construção do quadro de quatro casas. Os resultados indicam como possíveis elementos centrais da representação os termos conhecimento, conquista e responsabilidade e como elementos periféricos limitada, pouca e utopia.
