Composite Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) films from polyaniline and cadmium stearate have been irradiated with ionizing X-rays for various exposure times. In the initial stages of X-ray irradiation the absorption peak at 580 nm of an as-deposited film was seen to decrease with a concomitant increase in the absorption in the long wavelength region (700-1100 nm). Upon prolonging the irradiation, the absorption maximum shifted to 800 nm with the LB film color changing to green, characteristic of acid doped polyaniline. The changes in the Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectra upon irradiation are also similar to those observed upon acid doping of polyaniline. When compared with acid doping, two major differences were observed for the LB films exposed to X-rays. First, the packing order of the cadmium stearate domains in the composite LB films - as observed by X-ray diffraction - is not affected by the X-ray irradiation. In addition, no significant increase in the DC conductivity was noted after the X-ray exposure whereas similar LB films have their conductivity increased by an order of magnitude upon acid doping. These differences may be explained by considering that the inter-domain contribution to the conductivity is increased by the acid doping because the insulating cadmium stearate domains are destroyed, which does not occur with the X-ray irradiation. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of an imposed external auditory constraint upon the temporal organization of walking. Ten subjects were videotaped walking normally (N) and with instructions to couple naturally, at mid-swing, or at toe-off to a metronome beat. Based upon an analysis of variance and post hoc Scheffe tests most temporal variables were not significantly different among conditions. The duration of swing phase was significantly different between natural coupling and toe-off. The deviation from the metronome beat was significantly different between the natural coupling and both mid-swing and toe-off. Subjects generally were not successful in achieving coupling during the latter conditions. Thigh and shank phase portraits were used to describe the system's organization to the external constraint.

We have developed a methodology for measuring the decay constant of the spontaneous fission of U-238, lambda(f), using nuclear particle track detectors where thermal neutron irradiation is unnecessary. This methodology is based on the fact that the radiation damage caused by spontaneous fission of trans-uranium elements bearing a mass number close to 238 are similar to U-238 spontaneous-fission ones. Loading a thick source of uranium (thickness greater than the fission fragment range) with a small amount of a suitable trans-uranium element (for instance, Pu-242, which presents a spontaneous fission half-life of 6.75(.)10(10) y), it is possible to determine the observation efficiency of a particle-track detector for fission fragments. Procedures concerning our thick source manufacture and uniformity tests of the trans-uranium distribution are also presented. These results make it possible for the exposure of thick uranium sources (without trans-uranium element) to lead to a lambda(f) value.

Background and objectives: To assess the microhardness of dentin subsurface after Er:yttrium-aluminum-garnet (YAG) and Nd:YAG laser irradiation. Study design/materials and methods: Twenty-four bovine incisors, without pulp, were used. The vestibular surface was worn out until the dentin was reached and divided in mesial and distal regions. The samples were divided into two groups: GI-distal, irradiated by Er: YAG laser, and GII-distal, irradiated by Nd: YAG laser. The mesial area was protected so as to not receive the laser irradiation. The measurements were made on Vickers digital microhardmeter. Results: For GI-there was no significant statistical difference, Cl(-4.59 to 0.78), between the values of irradiated (55.61 +/- 4.38) and unirradiated (57.51 +/- 4.00) areas. For GII-the values were higher for the irradiated (62.21 +/- 6.48) compared to the unirradiated (57.82 +/- 5.42) area, CI(1.65 +/- to 7.13). Conclusions: There was an increase of dentin microhardness when the Nd: YAG was used, but the Er: YAG did not cause significant alterations in dentin microhardness. Objective: the aim of this study was to evaluate the potential application of biodegradable nanoparticles (NPs) containing indocyanine green (ICG) in photodynamic therapy (PDT). Methods: Important parameters, such as particle size and external morphology, were established by dynamic light scattering (DLS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Also, drug encapsulation efficiency and in vitro release behavior were evaluated by spectroscopic methods. Results: the particles are spherical in shape, they exhibit an 817-nm diameter, and they have a low tendency to aggregate. The loading efficiency was 65%. ICG photophysical parameters showed a bathocromic shift in ICG-loaded nanoparticles (ICG-NP). Analysis of the cell P388-D1 in the presence of the ICG-NP by SEM showed that the majority of the nanoparticles were uptaken by phagocytic cells after 2 h of incubation. After laser irradiation photodamage was observed in P388-D1 cells where ICG-NPs had been uptaken by phagocytic cells. Conclusion: Polymeric NPs work as an efficient drug delivery system for PDT drugs, and this approach can be used in the administration of amphiphilic photosensitizers in the treatment of neoplasic cells.

The oxidation of C.I. Reactive Blue 4 (RB4) by photo-Fenton process mediated by lerrioxalate was investigated under artificial and solar irradiation. The RB4 degradation in acidic medium (pH 2.5) was evaluated by the decrease in Total Organic Carbon (TOC) content and color, measured by the decrease in chromophore absorption band (600 nm). The influence of ferrioxalate and H2O2 concentrations on the dye degradation was studied and best results were obtained using 1.0 mM ferrioxalate and 10 nM of hydrogen peroxide. Under these experimental conditions, 80% of TOC and 100% of color removal were obtained for a 0.1 mM RB4 dye in 35 min of solar irradiation. (c) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
