Thin, piezoelectric circular plates are frequently used as active components in transducer and smart materials applications. This paper reports on the exact, explicit solution for the transient motion of a piezoelectric circular plate, built-in or simply supported on the edge and electrically grounded over the entire surface. Expressed by elementary Bessel functions and obtained via exact inverse Laplace transforms, the solution enables the efficient calculation of accurate system parameters. (C) 2004 Elsevier Ltd. Abnormalities in the growth plate may lead to short stature and skeletal deformity including Leri Weil syndrome, which has been shown to result from deletions or mutations in the SHOX gene, a homeobox gene located at the pseudoautosomal region of the X and Y chromosome. We studied the expression of SHOX protein, by immunohistochemistry, in human fetal and childhood growth plates and mRNA by in situ hybridization in childhood normal and Leri Weil growth plate. SHOX protein was found in reserve, proliferative, and hypertrophic zones of fetal growth plate from 12 wk to term and childhood control and Leri Weil growth plates. The pattern of immunostaining in the proliferative zone of childhood growth plate was patchy, with more intense uniform immunostaining in the hypertrophic zone. In situ hybridization studies of childhood growth plate demonstrated SHOX mRNA expression throughout the growth plate. No difference in the pattern of SHOX protein or mRNA expression was seen between the control and Leri Weil growth plate. These findings suggest that SHOX plays a role in chondrocyte function in the growth plate.

A novel and precise assay that facilitates high-throughput screening of fibrinolytic agents was developed based on the automated assessment of the euglobulin clot lysis time in microtitre plates. Euglobulin fractions from fresh plasma samples were assessed over 28 days to determine the inter-assay and intra-assay precision. The intra-assay (coefficient of variation range, 0.7-2.6%) and inter-assay precision (coefficient of variation range, 6.8-12.1%) was found to be well within limits required by the Food and Drug Administration. On day 1 and day 28, the results of the microtitre plate euglobulin clot lysis time method were compared with tissue plasminogen activator activity, plasminogen activator inhibitor activity and results produced on fibrin plates. All comparisons were found to correlate significantly. The validity of this method for assaying fibrinolytic agents was assessed by comparing dose-response curves for streptokinase produced using fibrin plates and this method. The critical influence of ambient temperature on the inter-assay reproducibility of this method was established by testing samples over a range of temperatures between 20degreesC and 40degreesC. Earthquakes have been recognized as resulting from stick-slip frictional instabilities along the faults between deformable rocks. A three-dimensional finite-element code for modeling the nonlinear frictional contact behaviors between deformable bodies with the node-to-point contact element strategy has been developed and applied here to investigate the fault geometry influence on the nucleation and development process of the stick-slip instability along an intra-plate fault through a typical fault bend model, which has a pre-cut fault that is artificially bent by an angle of 5.6degrees at the fault center. The numerical results demonstrate that the geometry of the fault significantly affects nucleation, termination and restart of the stick-slip instability along the intra-plate fault, and all these instability phenomena can be well simulated using the current finite-element algorithm.

Recent discoveries of different modes of exocytosis and a plethora of molecules involved in neurotransmitter release has resulted in demand for more rapid and efficient methods for monitoring endogenous glutamate release from various tissue sources. In this article, we describe a high throughput microplate version of the enzyme-linked fluorescence detection method for the measurement of released glutamate, which utilises glutamate dehydrogenase, and the reduction of NADP to NADPH. Previous versions of this method rely upon cuvette-based fluorimeters for detection that are limited by large sample volumes and small numbers of samples that can be measured simultaneously. Comparison between the two methods shows that the microplate assay has comparable performance to the cuvette-based assay but has the capacity to analyse many times more samples in a given run. This increased capacity provides improved experimental design opportunities, higher experimental throughput and better comparison between experimental conditions. (c) 2005 Elsevier B.V. Aims: Cytokeratin (CK) 14, a myoepithelial marker, is also expressed in a proportion of breast carcinomas. There is evidence that these tumours show a differing metastatic pattern and clinical outcome from other invasive ductal carcinomas (IDCs) and may need different management. Currently, they are not identified in routine practice and no morphological guidelines exist to aid their identification. The aim of this study was to analyse the histological features of CK14+ IDC. Methods and results: A detailed histological review of 453 grade 3 IDCs revealed 88 (19.4%) that expressed CK14. Assessment was made independently by two pathologists using a standardized 'tick-box' proforma covering grade, architectural and cytological features. The results were analysed using logistic regression to identify features that predicted for basal phenotype. Concordance between the two pathologists was fair to good for most parameters (kappa 0.4-0.6). On multiple logistic regression, the basal phenotype was highly significantly associated with the presence of a central scar (P = 0.005), tumour necrosis (P < 0.0001), presence of spindle cells (P = 0.006) or squamous metaplasia (P < 0.0001), high total mitotic count (> 40 per 10 high-power field) (P = 0.0002) and high nuclear-cytoplasmic ratio (P = 0.0002). Conclusions: Specific morphological features are strongly associated with basal-like breast carcinoma. These could be used in routine diagnostic practice to identify this important subset of tumours.

Lobular carcinoma in situ was first described over 60 years ago. Despite the long history, it continues to pose significant difficulties in screening, diagnosis, management and treatment. This is partly due its multi-focal and bilateral presentation, an incomplete understanding of its biology and natural history and perpetuation of misconceptions gathered over the last decades. Understanding and explaining emergent constitutive laws in the multi-scale evolution from point defects, dislocations and two-dimensional defects to plate tectonic scales is an arduous challenge in condensed matter physics. The Earth appears to be the only planet known to have developed stable plate tectonics as a means to get rid of its heat. The emergence of plate tectonics out of mantle convection appears to rely intrinsically on the capacity to form extremely weak faults in the top 100 km of the planet. These faults have a memory of at least several hundred millions of years, yet they appear to rely on the effects of water on line defects. This important phenomenon was first discovered in laboratory and dubbed ``hydrolytic weakening''. At the large scale it explains cycles of co-located resurgence of plate generation and consumption (the Wilson cycle), but the exact physics underlying the process itself and the enormous spanning of scales still remains unclear. We present an attempt to use the multi-scale non-equilibrium thermodynamic energy evolution inside the deforming lithosphere to move phenomenological laws to laws derived from basic scaling quantities, develop self-consistent weakening laws at lithospheric scale and give a fully coupled deformation-weakening constitutive framework. At meso- to plate scale we encounter in a stepwise manner three basic domains governed by the diffusion/reaction time scales of grain growth, thermal diffusion and finally water mobility through point defects in the crystalline lattice. The latter process governs the planetary scale and controls the stability of its heat transfer mode.

Based on Reddy's third-order theory, the first-order theory and the classical theory, exact explicit eigenvalues are found for compression buckling, thermal buckling and vibration of laminated plates via analogy with membrane vibration, These results apply to symmetrically laminated composite plates with transversely isotropic laminae and simply supported polygonal edges, Comprehensive consideration of a Winkler-Pasternak elastic foundation, a hydrostatic inplane force, an initial temperature increment and rotary inertias is incorporated. Bridged by the vibrating membrane, exact correspondences are readily established between any pairs of buckling and vibration eigenvalues associated with different theories. Positive definiteness of the critical hydrostatic pressure at buckling, the thermobukling temperature increment and, in the range of either tension loading or compression loading prior to occurrence of buckling, the natural vibration frequency is proved. The flat plate system is currently widely used in construction. It permits architectural flexibility, more clear space, less building height, easier formwork, and shorter construction time. However, there remains the problem of brittle punching failure due to the transfer of shearing forces and unbalanced moments at the flat plate-column connection. It is the purpose of this paper to investigate the effects of various interdependent factors that govern the punching shear resistance and behaviour of the flat plate-column connection, as well as their inclusion in current Codes.
