The mechanism of self-organization of quantum dots (QDs) during the growth of InGaAs/GaAs multilayers on GaAs (1 0 0) was investigated with cross-sectional transmission electron microscopy (XTEM), and double-crystal X-ray diffraction (DCXD). We found that the QDs spacing in the first layer can affect the vertical alignment of QDs. There seems to exist one critical lateral QD spacing, below which merging of QDs with different initial size is found to be the dominant mechanism leading to perfect vertical alignment. Once the critical value of QDs spacing is reached, the InGaAs QDs of the first layer are simply reproduced in the upper layers. The X-ray rocking curve clearly shows two sets of satellite peaks, which correspond to the QDs superlattice, and multi-quantum wells (QW) formed by the wetting layers around QDs. In this work, the excel lent catalytic activity of highly ordered mesoporous carbons (OMCs) to the electrooxidation of nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and hydrogen peroxide (H2O2) was described for the construction of electrochemical alcohol dehydrogenase (ADH) and glucose oxidase (GOD)-based biosensors.

Self-assembled behavior of rod-terminally tethered three-armed star-shaped coil block copolymer melts was studied by applying self-consistent-field lattice techniques in three-dimensional (3D) space. Similar to rod-coil diblock copolymers, five morphologies were observed, i.e., lamellar, perforated lamellar, gyroidlike, cylindrical and sphericallike structures, while the distribution of the morphologies in the phase diagram was dramatically changed with respect to that Of rod-coil diblock copolymers.

A novel method to tune surface wettability rapidly and reversibly has been developed by ion exchange of the counterions at the surface of a multilayer film assembled via electrostatic interaction.

We studied the self-assembly of polydisperse diblock copolymers under various confined states by Monte Carlo simulation. When the copolymers were confined within two parallel walls, it was found that the ordered strip structures appeared alternately with the increase in wall width. Moreover, the wall width at which the ordered structure appeared tended to increase with an increase in the polydispersity index (PDI). On the other hand, the simulation results showed that the copolymers were likely to form ordered concentric strip structures when they were confined within a circle wall.

DNA/poly-L-lysine (PLL) capsules were constructed through a layer-by-layer (LbL) self-assembly of DNA and PLL on CaCO3 microparticles, and then used as dual carriers for DNA and drug after dissolution of carbonate cores. The permeability of DNA/PLL microcapsules was investigated with fluorescence probes with different molecular weights by confocal microscopy. The result revealed that the fluorescence probes were able to penetrate the capsule walls even its molecular weight up to 150 kDa. The resultant capsules were used to load drug model molecules-fluorescein isothiocyanate (FITC)-dextran (4 kDa) via spontaneous deposition mechanism.

A new approach to one-dimensional organization of gold nanoparticles (2-4 nm) is described, using poly(4-vinylpyridine) (P4VP) molecular chain as a template with the mediation of free Cu2+ ion coordination. The assembly was conducted on freshly prepared mica surfaces and in aqueous solution, respectively. The surface assembly was characterized by tapping mode atomic force microscopy (AFM), observing the physisorbed molecules in their chain-like conformation with an average height of 0.4 nm.

By using a combinatorial screening method based on the self-consistent field theory (SCFT) for polymer systems, the micro-phase morphologies of the H-shaped (AC)B(CA) ternary block copolymer system are studied in three-dimensional (3D) space. By systematically varying the volume fractions of the components A, B, and C, six triangle phase diagrams of this H-shaped (AC)B(CA) ternary block copolymer system with equal interaction energies among the three components are constructed from the weaker segregation regime to the strong segregation regime, In this study, thirteen 3D micro-phase morphologies for this H-shaped ternary block copolymer system are identified to be stable and seven 3D microphase morphologies are found to be metastable.

The effect of the hydrophobic properties of blocks B and C on the aggregate morphologies formed by ABC linear triblock copolymers in selective solvent was studied through the self-consistent field theory. Five typical micelles, such as core-shell-corona, hamburger-like, segmented-wormlike, were obtained by changing the hydrophobic properties of blocks B and C. The simulation results indicate that the shape and size of micelle are basically controlled by the hydrophobic degree of the middle block B, whereas the type of micelle is mainly determined by the hydrophobic degree of the end block C.

Real-space self-consistent field theory (SCFT) is employed to study the effect of solvent molecular size on the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer in selective solvent. The phase diagrams in wide ranges of interaction parameters and solvent molecular size were obtained in present study. The results indicate that the solvent molecular size is a key factor that determines the self-assembly of amphiphilic diblock copolymer. The self-assembled morphology changes from circle-like micelle to line-like micelle, then to loop-like micelle by decreasing the solvent molecular size in a wide range of solvent selectivity. We analyze and discuss this change in terms of the solvent solubility and the entropy contribution.
