The soybean cyst nematode (Heterodera glycines) has become an increasingly severe problem in soybean production areas in Brazil. The development and use of resistant cultivars is the most efficient method of minimizing losses due to this pathogen. Our objective was to test the efficiency of an alternative method for screening soybean genotypes for resistance to H. glycines in field plots. The alternative method was compared to the standard method of sowing the test genotypes in fields found to be infested during the previous crop season. In the alternative method, the test genotypes are sown in the furrow following the uprooting of 45-day-old infected plants. The alternative method resulted in twice the cyst population and fewer escapes, and more consistent results than the standard method. The major advantage of the alternative method is that it permits screening in a more homogeneous distribution of H. glycines in the soil.

Background - Hidrocystomas ecrine and apocrine may be observed in the eyelids. Objective - The purpose of this study was to observe the occurrence of eyelid hidrocystoma (eccrine or apocrine), as well as the relation between clinical and histopathological diagnosis. Patients and Methods - 42 patients were selected, with a total of 52 lesions, attended between January 1990 to April 1999, at the Botucatu Medical School, with diagnosis of hidrocystoma confirmed by histopathology diagnosis. Result - Hidrocystoma occurred in 0.07% of patients undergoing lesion removal during this period. Eccrine and the apocrine hidrocystoma were frequently observed in female patients, aged over 40 years. The clinical picture ranged from about 1 to 5 years. The lesions were mainly located in the lower eyelid and presented as a single lesion. The clinical diagnosis agreed with the histopathological diagnosis in 67.31% of the apocrine hidrocystomas, and 9.62% of the eccrine hidrocystomas. Conclusions - Apocrine hidrocystoma was the most frequently observed eyelid hidrocystoma. The correlation between clinical and histopathological diagnosis was higher for apocrine hidrocystomas.

Spermatogenesis of 'corvina' P. squamosissimus starts from a stem cell that gives rise to germ cells. These cells are enveloped by Sertoli cells, forming cysts. The germ cells in the cysts are all at the same stage of development and are interconnected by cytoplasmic bridges. Spermatogonia are the largest germ cells. In the cysts, these cells differentiate into primary spermatogonia and secondary spermatogonia. The primary spermatogonia are isolated in the cyst and give rise to the secondary spermatogonia. After several mitotic divisions, they produce spermatocytes I, which can be identified by synaptonemal complexes in the nucleus. The spermatocytes I enter the first phase of meiosis to produce the spermatocytes II. These are not very frequently seen because they rapidly undergo a second phase of meiosis to produce spermatids.

In anuran amphibian Scinax fuscovarius, the spermatogenesis occurs in structures called seminiferous loculi, in which germ epithelium is organized in spermatocysts. Each cyst contains cells in the same stage of cytodifferentiation. Characteristics of each cellular type and their groups made the identification and differentiation of the germ lineage cells possible. In the basis of the epithelium there are the spermatogonia I, the biggest cells and always associated with the Sertoli cell. After the phase of mitotic proliferation, the cysts containing variable number of spermatogonia II are originated, quite smaller and with cellular boundaries a little distinct. After differentiation and growth in volume, the spermatocytes I appear, the nuclei of which are spherical and with different degrees of compaction of the nuclear material. Starting the meiotic process, the spermatocytes II are originated, which by means of the second meiotic division become haploid cells, the spermatids I. These two last spermatocysts are very similar. In this phase, the cells will go through a prominent process of differentiation until they form the spermatids II, which are elongated and begin to be organized in bundles supported by prominent Sertoli cells. With the process of spermiogenesis, spermatozoa appear, usually observed in compact bundles with tails turned to the lumen and their heads fitted in their support cells. In more advanced stages, the spermatozoa can be observed free in the locular lumen, ready to follow the spermatic path.

Apert Syndrome, also called acrocephalosyndactylia type 1, is characterized by craniostenosis with early fusion of sutures of the vault and/ or cranial base, associated to mid-face hypoplasia, symmetric syndactylia of the hands and feet and other systemic malformations. CNS malformations and intracranial hypertension are frequently observed in these patients. Early surgical treatment aims to minimize the deleterious effects of intracranial hypertension. Fronto-orbital advancement, the usual surgical technique, increases the intracranial volume and improves the disposition of encephalic structures previously deformed by a short skull. This study analyzes CNS alterations revealed by magnetic resonance in 18 patients presenting Apert Syndrome, and the conformational alterations in the encephalic structures after surgical treatment. The patients' age in February 2001 ranged from 14 to 322 months (m=107). Image study included brain magnetic resonance showing ventricular enlargement in five cases (27.8%), corpus callosum hypoplasia in five cases (27.8%), septum pellucidum hypoplasia in five cases (27.8%), cavum vergae in two cases (11.1%) and, arachnoid cyst in the posterior fossa in two cases (11.1%). Absence of CNS alterations was noted in 44.4% of cases. A corpus callosum morphologic index was established by dividing its height by its length, which revealed values that ranged from 0.4409 to 1.0237. The values of this index were correlated to the occurrence or absence of surgical treatment (p=0.012; t=2.83). Data analysis allowed the conclusion that the corpus callosum morphologic measure quantified the conformational alterations of the cerebral structures determined by the surgical treatment.

The present paper reports the occurrence of testicular cysts degeneration during spermatogenesis of Achroia grisella, a Lepidoptera with dimorphic spermatogenesis, through ultrastrucutural studies. Signs of cysts degeneration can be detected in the last larval instar but it increases during pupation and early adulthood. The degeneration affects the eupyrene, as well apyrene cysts but it is not always possible to recognize which cysts are degenerating. Some morphological features of cysts degeneration resemble apoptosis.

The present paper describes the one-pot procedure for the formation of self-assembled thin films of two silanes on the model oxidized silicon wafer, SiO2/Si. SiO2/Si is a model system for other surfaces, such as glass, quartz, aerosol, and silica gel. MALDI-TOF MS with and without a matrix, XPS, and AFM have confirmed the formation of self-assembled thin films of both 3-imidazolylpropyltrimethoxysilane (3-IPTS) and 4-(N- propyltriethoxysilane-imino)pyridine (4-PTSIP) on the SiO2/Si surface after 30 min. Longer adsorption times lead to the deposition of nonreacted 3-IPTS precursors and the formation of agglomerates on the 3-IPTS monolayer. The formation of 4-PTSIP self-assembled layers on SiO2/Si is also demonstrated. The present results for the flat SiO2/Si surface can lead to a better understanding of the formation of a stationary phase for affinity chromatography as well as transition-metal-supported catalysts on silica and their relationship with surface roughness and ordering. The 3-IPTS and 4-PTSIP modified SiO2/Si wafers can also be envisaged as possible built-on-silicon thin-layer chromatography (TLC) extraction devices for metal determination or N-heterocycle analytes, such as histidine and histamine, with on-spot MALDI-TOF MS detection. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. The use of the nasal route for drug delivery has attracted much interest in recent years in the pharmaceutical field. Local and principally systemic drug delivery can be achieved by this route of administration. But the nasal route of delivery is not applicable to all drugs. Polar drugs and some macromolecules are not absorbed in sufficient concentration due to poor membrane permeability, rapid clearance and enzymatic degradation into the nasal cavity. Thus, alternative means that help overcome these nasal barriers are currently in development. Absorption enhancers such as phospholipids and surfactants are constantly used, but care must be taken in relation to their concentration. Drug delivery systems including liposomes, cyclodextrins, micro- and nanoparticles are being investigated to increase the bioavailability of drugs delivered intranasally. This review article discusses recent progress and specific development issues relating to colloidal drug delivery systems in nasal drug delivery. © 2006 Bentham Science Publishers Ltd.

Dentigerous cysts are benign odontogenic cysts associated with the crowns of permanent teeth. They are usually single in occurrence and located in the mandible. The purpose of this case report was to describe the management of 2 dentigerous cysts in children. The treatments instituted were the extraction of the deciduous tooth involved followed by marsupialization in the first case and enucleation in the second one. Both treatments allowed rapid healing of the lesion and eruption of the permanent teeth without the need for orthodontic treatment.

The prostate is the only acessory sex gland in the male dog and, although the prostate is found in all mammals, it has a great importance in men and dogs due to the frequency of disorders. Several techniques have been employed for the treatment of prostatic cysts and abscesses and, a few years ago, it was successfully described the use of prostatic omentalisation for this purpose; until now, there are no data about this surgery in Brazil. So, the aim of this study was to evaluate the animal recovery, as well as the post operative period of dogs that underwent prostatic omentalisation, from 2002 to 2004. It was evaluated 11 dogs with prostatic cysts, 4 dogs with prostatic abscesses and 2 with paraprostatic cysts. Fifteen dogs had an uneventful recovery while one dog had a minor incontinence for two days. One dog died due to a previous long term sepsis. The low incidence of post operative complications and brief hospitalization period make omentalisation the surgery of choice for the treatment of prostatic cysts and abscess.

This work proposes a new method to determine the chemical composition of magnetic ferrite nanoparticles by the slurry injection technique using the inductively coupled plasma optical emission spectroscopy. In this way, experimental conditions such as aerosol gas flow rate and colloidal stability were optimized in order to use aqueous calibration curves in the slurry nebulization and to determine the chemical composition of a series of sols containing chemically synthesized size-tailored NiFe 2O 4 nanograms. Then, the results of direct sampling and those of conventional aqueous introduction analysis are compared, showing the efficiency of the proposed method.
