Hexadecanuclear copper mixed-valence complex 2 containing 10 Cu-II, centers and 6 Cu-I centers was isolated with N,O donor ligands. From the X-ray crystal structure, 2 was found to contain a centrosymmetric dimeric cation - each monomeric unit composed of eight copper centers. It displays a very broad and weak intervalence charge-transfer band around 1100 nm at room temperature in the solid state. Variable-temperature magnetic susceptibility measurements indicate an S = 1/2 ground state for half of 2, explicitly, each Cu-8 moiety has a g value around 2.26. Complex 2 was examined by NMR spectroscopy at room temperature in solution and by EPR at low temperature; the data indicates that the valence is delocalized in 2 at room temperature but localized at low temperature. A new class of water-soluble, amphiphilic star block copolymers with a large number of arms was prepared by sequential atom transfer radical polymerization (ATRP) of n-butyl methacrylate (BMA) and poly( ethylene glycol) methyl ether methacrylate (PEGMA). As the macroinitiator for the ATRP, a 2-bromoisobutyric acid functionalized fourth-generation hyperbranched polyester (Boltorn H40) was used, which allowed the preparation of star polymers that contained on average 20 diblock copolymer arms. The synthetic concept was validated by AFM experiments, which allowed direct visualization of single molecules of the multiarm star block copolymers. DSC and SAXS experiments on bulk samples suggested a microphase-separated structure, in agreement with the core-shell architecture of the polymers. SAXS experiments on aqueous solutions indicated that the star block copolymers can be regarded as unimolecular micelles composed of a PBMA core and a diffuse PPEGMA corona. The ability of the polymers to encapsulate and release hydrophobic guests was evaluated using H-1 NMR spectroscopy. In dilute aqueous solution, these polymers act as unimolecular containers that can be loaded with up to 27 wt % hydrophobic guest molecules.

New lanthanide complexes of 3-hydroxypicolinic acid (HpicOH) were prepared: [Ln(H2O)(picOH)(2)(mu-HpicO)].3H(2)O (Ln = Eu, Tb, Er). The complexes were characterized using photoluminescence, infrared, Raman, and H-1 NMR spectroscopy, and elemental analysis. The crystal structure of [Eu(H2O)(picOH)(2)(mu-HpicO)] . 3H(2)O 1 was determined by X-ray diffraction. Compound 1 crystallizes in a monoclinic system with space group P2(1)/c and cell parameters a = 9.105(13) Angstrom, b = 18.796(25) Angstrom, and c = 13.531(17) Angstrom, and beta = 104.86(1) deg. The 3-hydroxypicolinate ligands coordinate through both N,O- or O,O- chelation to the lanthanide ions, as shown by X-ray and spectroscopic results. Photoluminescence measurements were performed for the Eu(III) and Tb(III) complexes; the Eu(III) complex was investigated in more detail. The Eu(III) compound is highly luminescent and acts as a photoactive center in nanocomposite materials whose host matrixes are silica nanoparticles.

The vinylogous aldol reaction between appropriate aldehydes and furan-based silyloxy diene synthon generated from 3-benzyl-5H-furan-2-one (3) afforded two truncated lactone analogues [compounds (4) and (5)] of nostoclides (2). The compounds were fully characterized by IR, NMR (H-1 and C-13), 2D NMR spectroscopy experiments (HMBC, HSQC and NOESY), MS spectrometry and X-ray crystallography. Compounds (4) and (5) crystallized in the space group P2(1)2(1)2(1) and P2(1)/c, respectively. Although expected correlations between hydrogen atoms in spatial close proximity were not observed for compound (5) using NMR, the stereochemistry of the exocyclic double bond of both (4) and (5) was unambiguously determined to be Z and E, respectively, using X-ray crystallography. The packing of both compounds within the crystal are stabilized by non-classical inter-molecular hydrogen bonds. DFT calculations (B3LYP/6-31+G* level) confirmed that the crystal structures possessed the lowest energies in the gas phase when compared to their geometric isomers. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. The crystal structure of 4-phenyl-benzaldehyde reveals the presence of a dimer linked by the C=O and C( 9)-H groups of adjacent molecules. In the liquid phase, the presence of C-(HO)-O-... bonded forms is revealed by both vibrational and NMR spectroscopy. A Delta H value of - 8.2 +/- 0.5 kJ mol(-1) for the dimerisation equilibrium is established from the temperature-dependent intensities of the bands assigned to the carbonyl-stretching modes. The NMR data suggest the preferential engagement of the C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-H groups as hydrogen bond donors, instead of the C(9)-H group. While ab initio calculations for the isolated dimers are unable to corroborate these NMR results, the radial distribution functions obtained from molecular dynamics simulations show a preference for C(2,6)-H and C(10/12)/C(11)-(HO)-O-... contacts relative to the C(9)-(HO)-O-... ones.

New Mo(II) complexes with 2,2'-dipyridylamine (L1), [Mo(CH(3)CN)(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L1)]OTf (C1a) and [{MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L1)}(2)(4,4'-bipy)](PF(6))(2) (C1b), with {[bis(2-pyridyl)amino]carbonyl}ferrocene (L2), [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L2)] (C2), and with the new ligand N,N-bis(ferrocenecarbonyl)-2-aminopyridine (L3), [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L3)] (C3), were prepared and characterized by FTIR and (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. C1a, C1b, L3, and C2 were also structurally characterized by single crystal X-ray diffraction. The Mo(II) coordination sphere in all complexes features the facial arrangement of allyl and carbonyl ligands, with the axial isomer present in C1a and C2, and the equatorial in the binuclear C1b. In both C1a and C1b complexes, the L1 ligand is bonded to Mo(II) through the nitrogen atoms and the NH group is involved in hydrogen bonds. The X-ray single crystal structure of C2 shows that L2 is coordinated in a kappa(2)-N,N-bidentate chelating fashion. Complex C3 was characterized as [MoBr(eta(3)-C(3)H(5))(CO)(2)(L3)] with L3 acting as a kappa(2)-N,O-bidentate ligand, based on the spectroscopic data, complemented by DFT calculations. The electrochemical behavior of the monoferrocenyl and diferrocenyl ligands L2 and L3 has been studied together with that of their Mo(II) complexes C2 and C3. As much as possible, the nature of the different redox changes has been confirmed by spectrophotometric measurements. The nature of the frontier orbitals, namely the localization of the HOMO in Mo for both in C2 and C3, was determined by DFT studies.

Cyclization of thiosemicarbazones derived from beta-keto esters and beta-keto amides (HTSC) in the presence of diphenyllead(IV) acetate was explored in methanol solution at room temperature and under reflux. All beta-keto ester TSCs underwent cyclization to give the corresponding pyrazolone (HL), which, except in one case, deprotonated and coordinated the PbPh(2)(2+) moiety to form homoleptic [PbPh(2)(L)(2)] or heteroleptic [PbPh(2)(OAc)(L)] derivatives. Cyclization did not occur with beta-keto amide TSCs and only [Pbph(2)(TSC)(2)] or [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC)] thiosernicarbazonates were isolated. The complexes were characterized by IR spectroscopy in the solid state and by (1)H, (13)C and (207)Pb NMR spectroscopy in DMSO-d(G) solution, in which they evolve and decompose with time. Additionally, crystals of p-acetoacetanisidide thiosemicarbazone (HTSC(10)), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(L(5))] center dot MeOH (HL(5) = 2,5-dihydro-3,4-dimethyl-5-oxo-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide), [PbPh(2)Cl(L(2))] (HL(2) = 2,5-dihydro-5-oxo-3-phenyl-1H-pyrazolone-1-carbothioamide), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(8))]center dot 2MeOH (HTSC(8) = acetoacetanilide thiosemicarbazone), [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(10))]center dot H(2)O and [PbPh(2)(OAc)(TSC(11))] center dot 0.75MeOH (HTSO(11) = o-acetoacetotoluidide) were studied by X-ray crystallography. The complexes, monomers or dimers with almost linear C-Pb-C moieties, are compared with the corresponding derivatives of Pb(II). (C) 2009 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Five novel organotin complexes with the anthraquinone dyes alizarin (1,2-dihydroxyanthraquinone) and purpurin (1,2,4-trihydroxyanthraquinone) were synthesized and characterized by elemental analyses, FTIR and NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C and (119)Sn). The crystal and Molecular structures Of four complexes were determined by X-ray diffraction on single crystals: [Bu(2)Sn(aliz)(H(2)O)]center dot C(2)H(5)OH (A1 center dot EtO H), [Bu(2)Sn(aliz)(dmso)](2) (A3), [(Bu(2)Sn)(3)O(Hpurp)(2)] (P1) and [Bu(2)Sn(Hpurp)(dmso)](2) (P2), where H(2)aliz = alizarin and H(3)purp = purpurin. The coordination mode of the ligands is identical to that found in their Al/Ca complexes, where they act as dianionic tridentate ligands forming five and six-membered fused chelate rings. The coordination to the tin atoms occurs exclusively via the 1,2- phenolate oxygen and the adjacent quinoid oxygen atoms. The complexes A1, A3 and P1 are dimers with hepta-coordinated tin atoms in form of a slightly distorted pentagonal bipyramid. The trinuclear complex P2 contains two pentacoordinated and one heptacoordinated tin atoms.

A series of palladium(II) thiosaccharinates with triphenylphosphane (PPh(3)), bis(diphenylphosphanyl)methane (dppm), and bis(diphenylphosphanyl)ethane (dppe) have been prepared and characterized. From mixtures of thiosaccharin, Htsac, and palladium(II) acetylacetonate, Pd(acac)(2), the palladium(II) thiosaccharinate, Pd(tsac)(2) (tsac: thiosaccharinate anion) (1) was prepared. The reaction of I with PPh(3), dppm, and dppe leads to the mononuclear species Pd(tsac)(2)(PPh(3))(2)center dot MeCN (2), [Pd(tsac)(2)(dppm)] (3), Pd(tsac)(2)(dppm)(2) (4), and [Pd(tsac)(2)(dppe)]center dot MeCN (5). Compounds 2, 4, and 5 have been prepared also by the reaction of Pd(acac)(2) with the corresponding phosphane and Htsac. All the new complexes have been characterized by chemical analysis, UV/Vis, IR, and Raman spectroscopy. Some of them have been also characterized by NMR spectroscopy. The crystalline structures of complexes 3, and 5 have been studied by X-ray diffraction techniques. Complex 3 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2(1)/n with a = 16.3537(2), b = 13.3981(3), c = 35.2277(7) angstrom, beta = 91.284(1)degrees, and Z = 8 molecules per unit cell, and complex 5 in P2(1)/n with a = 10.6445(8), b = 26.412(3), c = 15.781(2) angstrom, beta = 107.996(7)degrees, and Z = 4. In compounds 3 and 5, the palladium ions are in a distorted square planar environment. They are closely related, having two sulfur atoms of two thiosaccharinate anions, and two phosphorus atoms of one molecule of dppm or dppe, respectively, bonded to the Pd(II) atom. The molecular structure of complex 3 is the first reported for a mononuclear Pd(II)-dppm-thionate system.

To facilitate the design of laser host materials with optimized emission properties, detailed structural information at the atomic level is essential, regarding the local bonding environment of the active ions (distribution over distinct lattice sites) and their extent of local clustering as well as their population distribution over separate micro- or nanophases. The present study explores the potential of solid state NMR spectroscopy to provide such understanding for rare-earth doped lead lanthanum zirconate titanate (PLZT) ceramics. As the NMR signals of the paramagnetic dopant species cannot be observed directly, two complementary approaches are utilized: (1) direct observation of diamagnetic mimics using Sc-45 NMR and (2) study of the paramagnetic interaction of the constituent host lattice nuclei with the rare-earth dopant, using Pb-207 NMR lineshape analysis. Sc-45 MAS NMR spectra of scandium-doped PLZT samples unambiguously reveal scandium to be six-coordinated, suggesting that this rare-earth ion substitutes in the B site. Static Pb-207 spin echo NMR spectra of a series of Tm-doped PLZT samples reveal a clear influence of paramagnetic rare-earth dopant concentration on the NMR lineshape. In the latter case high-fidelity spectra can be obtained by spin echo mapping under systematic incrementation of the excitation frequency, benefiting from the signal-to-noise enhancement afforded by spin echo train Fourier transforms. Consistent with XRD data, the Pb-207 NMR lineshape analysis suggests that statistical incorporation into the PLZT lattice occurs at dopant levels of up to 1 wt.% Tm3+, while at higher levels the solubility limit is reached. Polycrystalline La(0.86)Sr(0.14)Mn(1-x)Cu(x)O(3+delta) (x = 0, 0.05, 0.10, 0.15, 0.20) manganites were investigated by means of magnetic measurements and zero-field (139)La and (55)Mn nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy. Magnetization versus temperature measurements revealed a paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition in most samples, with lower Curie temperatures and broader transitions for samples with higher Cu contents. The details of the magnetization measurements suggested a phase-separated scenario, with ferromagnetic clusters embedded in an antiferromagnetic matrix, especially for the samples with large Cu contents (x = 0.15 and 0.20). Zero-field (139)La NMR measurements confirmed this finding, since the spectral features remained almost unchanged for all Cu-doped samples, whereas the bulk magnetization was drastically reduced with increasing Cu content. (55)Mn NMR spectra were again typical of ferromagnetic regions, with a broadening of the resonance line caused by the disorder introduced by the Cu doping. The results indicate a coexistence of different magnetic phases in the manganites studied, with the addition of Cu contributing to the weakening of the double-exchange interaction in most parts of the material.

In this study, the molecular structure and conformational analyses of the 4-isopropylthioxanthone (4-ITX) are reported according to experimental and theoretical results. The compound crystallizes in the centrosymmetric P (1) over bar space group with only one molecule in the asymmetric unit, presenting the most stable conformation, in which the three fused-rings adopt a planar geometry, and the isopropyl group assumes a torsional angle with less sterical hindrance. The structural and conformational analyses were performed using theoretical calculations such as Hartree-Fock (HF), DFT method in combination with 6-311G(d,p) and 6-31++G(d,p) and the results were compared with infrared spectroscopy (FT-IR) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The supramolecular assembly of 4-ITX is kept by non-classical C-H center dot center dot center dot O hydrogen bonds and weak interactions such as pi-pi stacking. 4-ITX was also studied by (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy. UV-Vis absorption spectroscopic properties of the 4-ITX showed the long-wavelength maximum shifts towards high energy when the solvent polarity increases. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A new aliphatic block copolyester was synthesized in bulk from transesterification techniques between poly((R)-3-hydroxybutyrate) (PHB) and poly(isosorbide succinate) (PIS). Additionally, other two block copolyesters were synthesized in bulk either from transesterification reactions involving PHB and poly(l-lactide) (PLLA) or from ring-opening copolymerization of l-lactide and hydroxyl-terminated PHB, as result of a previous transesterification reactions with isosorbide. Two-component blends of PHB and PIS or PLLA were also prepared as comparative systems. SEC, MALDI-TOF mass spectrometry (MALDI-TOFMS), (1)H and (13)C NMR spectroscopy, WAXD, solubility tests, and TG thermal analysis were used for characterization. The block copolymer structures of the products were evidenced by MALDI-TOFMS, (13)C NMR, and WAXD data. The block copolymers and the corresponding binary blends presented different solubility properties, as revealed by solubility tests. Although the incorporation of PIS sequences into PHB main backbone did not enhance the thermal stability of the product, it reduced its crystallinity, which could be advantageous for faster biodegradation rate. These products, composed of PHB and PIS or PLLA sequences, are an interesting alternative in biomedical applications.

The neutral complex [HgPh(dmpymt)] 1 (dmpymtH = 4,6-dimethylpyrimidine-2(1H)-thione) reacts with HBF(4) to give the cationic complex [HgPh(dmpymtH)][BF(4)] 2. The X-ray molecular structure of the later revealed a [2+1] coordination sphere about the mercury(II) atom (C-Hg-S and Hg center dot center dot center dot N). In the dinuclear complex [(HgPh)(2)(mu-dtu)] 3 [dtuH(2) = 2,4(1H,3H)-pyrimidinedithione or dithiouracil] the coordination spheres are also [2+1] although dissimilar regarding the Hg center dot center dot center dot N secondary bonds. NMR spectroscopy ((1)H, (13)C and (199)Hg) studies were undertaken in solution and the results discussed in the light of the X-ray structures. (C) 2008 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.
