This paper presents further results from our spectroscopic study of the globular cluster (GC) system of the group elliptical NGC 3923. From observations made with the GMOS instrument on the Gemini South Telescope, an additional 50 GC and ultra-compact dwarf (UCD) candidates have been spectroscopically confirmed as members of the NGC 3923 system. When the recessional velocities of these GCs are combined with the 29 GC velocities reported previously, a total sample of 79 GC/UCD velocities is produced. This sample extends to over 6 arcmin (>6 R-e similar to 30 kpc) from the centre of NGC 3923 and is used to study the dynamics of the GC system and the dark matter content of NGC 3923. It is found that the GC system of NGC 3923 displays no appreciable rotation, and that the projected velocity dispersion is constant with radius within the uncertainties. The velocity dispersion profiles of the integrated light and GC system of NGC 3923 are indistinguishable over the region in which they overlap. We find some evidence that the diffuse light and GCs of NGC 3923 have radially biased orbits within similar to 130 arcsec. The application of axisymmetric orbit-based models to the GC and integrated light velocity dispersion profiles demonstrates that a significant increase in the mass-to-light ratio (from M/L-V = 8 to 26) at large galactocentric radii is required to explain this observation. We therefore confirm the presence of a dark matter halo in NGC 3923. We find that dark matter comprises 17.5(-4.5)(+7.3) per cent of the mass within 1 R-e, 41.2(-10.6)(+18.2) per cent within 2 R-e and 75.6(-16.8)(+15.4) per cent within the radius of our last kinematic tracer at 6.9 R-e. The total dynamical mass within this radius is found to be 1.5(-0.25)(+0.4) x 10(12) M-circle dot. In common with other studies of large ellipticals, we find that our derived dynamical mass profile is consistently higher than that derived by X-ray observations, by a factor of around 2.

Two structural properties in mixed alkali metal phosphate glasses that seem to be crucial to the development of the mixed ion effect in dc conductivity were systematically analyzed in Na mixed metaphosphates: the local order around the mobile species, and their distribution and mixing in the glass network. The set of glasses considered here, Na1-xMxPO3 with M = Li, Ag, K, Rb, and Cs and 0 <= x <= 1, encompass a broad degree of size mismatch between the mixed cation species. A comprehensive solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance study was carried out using P-31 MAS, Na-23 triple quantum MAS, Rb-87 QCPMG, P-31-Na-23 REDOR, Na-23-Li-7 and Li-7-Li-6 SEDOR, and Na-23 spin echo decay. It was observed that the arrangement of P atoms around Na in the mixed glasses was indistinguishable from that observed in the NaPO3 glass. However, systematic distortions in the local structure of the 0 environments around Na were observed, related to the presence of the second cation. The average Na-O distances show an expansion/compression When Na+ ions are replaced by cations with respectively smaller/bigger radii. The behavior of the nuclear electric quadrupole coupling. constants indicates that this expansion reduces the local symmetry, while the compression produces the opposite effect These effects become marginally small when the site mismatch between the cations is small, as in Na-Ag mixed glasses. The present study confirms the intimate mixing of cation species at the atomic scale, but clear deviations from random mixing were detected in systems with larger alkali metal ions (Cs-Na, K-Na, Rb-Na). In contrast, no deviations from the statistical ion mixture were found in the systems Ag-Na and Li-Na, where mixed cations are either of radii comparable to (Ag+) or smaller than (Li+) Na+. The set of results supports two fundamental structural features of the models proposed to explain the mixed ion effect: the. structural specificity of the sites occupied by each cation species and their mixing at the atomic scale.

Catalysts containing 10%Co supported on CexZr1-xO2 (0 < x < 1) were applied to ethanol steam reforming reactions. The catalysts were characterized by Raman spectroscopy, XANES-H-2 and DRS-UV-Vis. The catalytic tests were conducted at 673, 773 and 873 K, with molar ratios of H2O:ethanol = 3:1. The ethanol conversion and H-2 selectivity were temperature dependent and the association of CeO2 with ZrO2 in the support led to show a low formation of CO, due to the higher mobility of oxygen. Cu(II)/neocuproine (2,9-dimethyl-1,10-phenanthroline) complexes were utilized for spectrophotometric determination of total polyphenol content in beers. This procedure is based on the reduction of Cu(II) by polyphenols in hydroethanolic medium (pH 7.0) in the presence of neocuproine, yielding Cu(I)/complexes with maximum absorption at 454 nm. The sensitivity of the proposed method was compared with the AOAC method using tannic and gallic acid as standards. The average apparent molar absorptivity, in L cm(-1) mol(-1), of tannic acid (3.50 +/- 0.20) x 10(5) and gallic acid (5.12 +/- 0.21) x 10(4), was twice as high for the proposed method. A lower limit of detection (LOD) (2.9 x 10(-1) mg L-1) was found when tannic acid was used in the proposed method. Additionally, less interference from the most common additives in beers was noticed. Total content of polyphenols was analyzed in 17 Brazilian samples. Results ranged from 35.5 to 556 mg L-1 of tannic acid, with higher values for recovery rates (45.4-118%, mean 85.0%) than for gallic acid. Although tannic acid is a mixture of polygalloyl glucoses, the total polyphenol content found in the samples suggests that tannic acid should be used as a standard. This is the first attempt to use this particular copper complex to quantify total polyphenol content in beer samples. (C) 2012 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

We present a method of generation of exact and explicit forms of one-sided, heavy-tailed Levy stable probability distributions g(alpha)(x), 0 <= x < infinity, 0 < alpha < 1. We demonstrate that the knowledge of one such a distribution g a ( x) suffices to obtain exactly g(alpha)p ( x), p = 2, 3, .... Similarly, from known g(alpha)(x) and g(beta)(x), 0 < alpha, beta < 1, we obtain g(alpha beta)( x). The method is based on the construction of the integral operator, called Levy transform, which implements the above operations. For a rational, alpha = l/k with l < k, we reproduce in this manner many of the recently obtained exact results for g(l/k)(x). This approach can be also recast as an application of the Efros theorem for generalized Laplace convolutions. It relies solely on efficient definite integration. Introduction: Computerizd tomography (CT) is the gold standard for the evaluation of intra- (IAF) and total (TAF) abdominal fat; however, the high cost of the procedure and exposure to radiation limit its routine use. Objective: To develop equations that utilize anthropometric measures for the estimate of IAF and TAF in obese women with polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS). Methods: The weight, height, BMI, and abdominal (AC), waist (WC), chest (CC), and neck (NC) circumferences of thirty obese women with PCOS were measured, and their IAF and TAF were analyzed by CT. Results: The anthropometric variables AC, CC, and NC were chosen for the TAF linear regression model because they were better correlated with the fat deposited in this region. The model proposed for TAF (predicted) was: 4.63725 + 0.01483 x AC - 0.00117 x NC - 0.00177 x CC (R-2 = 0.78); and the model proposed for IAF was: IAF (predicted) = 1.88541 + 0.01878 x WC + 0.05687 x NC - 0.01529 x CC (R-2 = 0.51). AC was the only independent predictor of TAF (p < 0.01). Conclusion: The equations proposed showed good correlation with the real value measured by CT, and can be used in clinical practice. The affinity of the d-galactose-binding lectin from Artocarpus heterophyllus lectin, known as jacalin, with immonuglobulins (Igs) was determined by biofunctionalization of a piezoelectric transducer. This piezoelectric biofunctionalized transducer was used as a mass-sensitive analytical tool, allowing the real-time binding analysis of jacalin-human immunoglobulin A1 (IgA(1)) and jacalin-bovine IgG(1) interactions from which the apparent affinity constant was calculated. The strategy was centered in immobilizing jacalin on the gold electrode's surface of the piezoelectric crystal resonator using appropriate procedures based on self-assembling of 11-mercaptoundecanoic acid and 2-mercaptoethanol thiol's mixture, a particular immobilization strategy by which it was possible to avoid cross-interaction between the proteins over electrode's surface. The apparent affinity constants obtained between jacalin-human IgA(1) and jacalin-bovine IgG(1) differed by 1 order of magnitude [(8.0 +/- 0.9) x 10(5) vs (8.3 +/- 0.1) x 10(6) L mol(-1)]. On the other hand, the difference found between human IgA(1) and human IgA(2) interaction with jacalin, eight times higher for IgA(1), was attributed to the presence of O-linked glycans in the IgA(1) hinge region, which is absent in IgA(2). Specific interaction of jacalin with O-glycans, proved to be present in the human IgA(1) and hypothetically present in bovine IgG(1) structures, is discussed as responsible for the obtained affinity values.

CoRoT-21, a F8IV star of magnitude V = 16 mag, was observed by the space telescope CoRoT during the Long Run 01 ( LRa01) in the first winter field (constellation Monoceros) from October 2007 to March 2008. Transits were discovered during the light curve processing. Radial velocity follow-up observations, however, were performed mainly by the 10-m Keck telescope in January 2010. The companion CoRoT-21b is a Jupiter-like planet of 2.26 +/- 0.33 Jupiter masses and 1.30 +/- 0.14 Jupiter radii in an circular orbit of semi-major axis 0.0417 +/- 0.0011 AU and an orbital period of 2.72474 +/- 0.00014 days. The planetary bulk density is ( 1.36 +/- 0.48) x 10(3) kg m(-3), very similar to the bulk density of Jupiter, and follows an M-1/3 - R relation like Jupiter. The F8IV star is a sub-giant star of 1.29 +/- 0.09 solar masses and 1.95 +/- 0.2 solar radii. The star and the planet exchange extreme tidal forces that will lead to orbital decay and extreme spin-up of the stellar rotation within 800 Myr if the stellar dissipation is Q(*)/k2(*) <= 107.

In this work we study C (a)-hypoellipticity in spaces of ultradistributions for analytic linear partial differential operators. Our main tool is a new a-priori inequality, which is stated in terms of the behaviour of holomorphic functions on appropriate wedges. In particular, for sum of squares operators satisfying Hormander's condition, we thus obtain a new method for studying analytic hypoellipticity for such a class. We also show how this method can be explicitly applied by studying a model operator, which is constructed as a perturbation of the so-called Baouendi-Goulaouic operator.

This paper reports measurements of atmospheric neutrino and antineutrino interactions in the MINOS Far Detector, based on 2553 live-days (37.9 kton-years) of data. A total of 2072 candidate events are observed. These are separated into 905 contained-vertex muons and 466 neutrino-induced rock-muons, both produced by charged-current nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) interactions, and 701 contained-vertex showers, composed mainly of charged-current nu(e) and (nu) over bar (e) interactions and neutral-current interactions. The curvature of muon tracks in the magnetic field of the MINOS Far Detector is used to select separate samples of nu(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) events. The observed ratio of (nu) over bar (mu) to v(mu) events is compared with the Monte Carlo ( MC) simulation, giving a double ratio of R((nu) over bar/nu)data/R(nu) over bar/nu MC = 1.03 +/- 0.08(stat) +/- 0.08(syst). The v(mu) and (nu) over bar (mu) data are separated into bins of L/E resolution, based on the reconstructed energy and direction of each event, and a maximum likelihood fit to the observed L/E distributions is used to determine the atmospheric neutrino oscillation parameters. This fit returns 90% confidence limits of |Delta m(2)| = (1.9 +/- 0.4) x 10(-3) eV(2) and sin(2)2 theta > 0.86. The fit is extended to incorporate separate nu(mu) and (nu) over bar mu oscillation parameters, returning 90% confidence limits of |Delta m(2)| - |Delta(m) over bar (2)| = 0.6(-0.8)(+2.4) x 10(-3) eV(2) on the difference between the squared-mass splittings for neutrinos and antineutrinos.

This work presents two potential metallo-drugs, the ionic (C17H19FN3O3)(3)[RuCl6]center dot 3H(2)O (1) and the coordination [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)]center dot 4H(2)O (2) compounds, obtained by the combination of ruthenium(III) and ciprofloxacin in different synthetic conditions. The ESI MS spectrum of 1 displayed a main peak at m/z = 994.6, assigned to the gaseous phase adduct (ciprofloxacin)(3)center dot H+, while 2 featured peaks at m/z 1093.3 and 547.1 ascribed to [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)center dot H+-4H(2)O](+) and [Ru(C17H17FN3O3)(3)center dot 2H(+)-4H(2)O](2+). Thermal analysis corroborated the proposed water content for both complexes. Absorption spectra of the compounds in aqueous medium are dominated by ciprofloxacin transitions in the UV region but displayed weak bands in the visible region, assigned to ligand field transitions. The cyclic voltammograms of 2 exhibited a quasi-reversible process ascribed to the Ru(II)/(III) redox pair at -0.25V (vs. SHE) while 1 displayed this process at -0.11 V, showing that the central ruthenium ion is stabilized in the (III) oxidation state by the coordination to the hard oxygen atoms of ciprofloxacin. The solubility of 1 is pH dependent (as well as free ciprofloxacin) while 2 is fully water soluble and stable under physiological pH for at least 48 h. The compounds are also stable under incubation conditions (stomach pH and 37 degrees C) without significant pH lowering. An interaction study of 2 with ct-DNA showed a value of K-b = 2.47 (+/- 0.89) x 10(4) mol(-1) L for the intrinsic binding constant.

In this work we have investigated the intercalation of electron-donors between NbS2 slabs in Nb-based layer sulfides. Two series of Sr substituted Nb-based misfit sulfides belonging to the 1.5Q/1H and 1Q/1H series of misfit layer compounds have been synthesised. For large lanthanides (Ln=La, Ce), only the 1Q/1H compounds formed whereas for smaller lanthanides and yttrium, both types of phases can be obtained. The crystal structure of misfit sulfide (Pr0.55Sr0.45S)1.15NbS2 has been refined using the composite approach. In the Q-slab, Pr-atoms are partly replaced by Sr with a random distribution over one cation position. The crystal structure of misfit sulfide [(Sm1/3Sr2/3S)1.5]1.15NbS2 belonging to the 1.5Q/1H series have also been determined. The obtained results suggest a preferred occupancy of the cation positions in the slab where Sr atoms mainly occupy positions on the exterior of the slab while Sm atoms are in the center of the slab. The (La1-xSrxS)1.15NbS2 solid solution (0.1<x<0.9) has also been studied. It was found that the maximum value of Sr substitution is 40-50% and therefore, the minimal value of charge transfer to stabilize this structure type is about 0.6ē per Nb atom. An attempt to synthesize SrxNbS2 (0.1≤x≤0.5) intercalates was made but single phases were not obtained and increasing the temperature from 1000оС to 1100оС leads to the decomposition of these intercalates. Single crystals of Sr0.22Nb1.05S2 and Sr0.23NbS2 were found and their structures were determined. The structures belong to two different types of packings with statistical distribution of Sr between layers. A new superconducting sulfide, "EuNb2S5", was investigated by ED and HREM and its structure model consisting of Nb7S14 and (Eu3S4)2 slabs alternating along the c-axis is suggested. An attempt to suggest a model for the structure of "SrNb2S5" by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction was made. The proposed structure consists of two types of slabs: a Nb7S14 and a [Sr6(NbS4)2S] slab with niobium in tetrahedral coordination. It is shown that "SrNb2S5" and "EuNb2S5" are have similar structures. For the first time, single crystals of the complex sulfide BaNb0.9S3 have also been studied by means of X-ray single crystal diffraction. The single crystal refinement and EDX analysis showed the existence of cation vacancies at the niobium position. BaNb0.9S3 has also been studied by ED and no superstructure was found which implies that and the vacancies are statistically distributed. No improvement of the magnetic properties of the studied compounds was observed in comparison to NbS2.

In older patients with acute myeloid leukemia (AML), the prevention of relapse has remained one of the major therapeutic challenges, with more than 75% relapses after complete remission. The anti-CD33 immunotoxin conjugate gemtuzumab ozogamicin (GO) has shown antileukemic remission induction activity in patients with relapsed AML. Patients with AML or refractory anemia with excess blasts in first complete remission attained after intensive induction chemotherapy were randomized between 3 cycles of GO (6 mg/m(2) every 4 weeks) or no postremission therapy (control) to assess whether GO would improve outcome. The 2 treatment groups (113 patients receiving GO vs 119 control patients) were comparable with regard to age (60-78 years, median 67 years), performance status, and cytogenetics. A total of 110 of 113 received at least 1 cycle of GO, and 65 of 113 patients completed the 3 cycles. Premature discontinuation was mainly attributable to incomplete hematologic recovery or intercurrent relapse. Median time to recovery of platelets 50 x 10(9)/L and neutrophils 0.5 x 10(9)/L after GO was 14 days and 20 days. Nonhematologic toxicities were mild overall, but there was 1 toxic death caused by liver failure. There were no significant differences between both treatment groups with regard to relapse probabilities, nonrelapse mortality, overall survival, or disease-free survival (17% vs 16% at 5 years). Postremission treatment with GO in older AML patients does not provide benefits regarding any clinical end points. The HOVON-43 study is registered at The Netherlands Trial Registry (number NTR212) and at http://www.controlled-trials.com as ISRCTN77039377.
