The transforms dealt with in this paper are defined in terms of the transform kernels which are Kroneeker products of the two or more component kernels. The signal flow-graph for the computation of such a transform is obtained with the flow-graphs for the component transforms as building blocks.

This paper deals with studies on the dilute solution properties of methyl methacrylateacrylonitrile copolymer of 0.289 mole fraction (mf) of acrylonitrile composition. MarkHouwink parameters for this copolymer have been evaluated in acetonitrile (MeCN), 2-butanone (MEK), dimethylformamide (DMF) and γ-butyrolactone (γ-BL). The solvent power is found to be in the order of MEK < MeCN < DMF < γ-BL at 30°C. Herein, probably for the first time, the steric factor for the copolymer is found to be lower than that for the parent homopolymers and the excess interaction parameter, AB is found to be negative. This probably suggests that the units are compatible to each other.

Intrinsic viscosity data for polystyrene, poly(methyl methacrylate) and styrene-methyl methacrylate copolymer of azeotropic composition have been used to evaluate the excess interaction parameters at different temperatures in γ-butyrolactone and dimethylformamide. It is found that these values are positive and show a negligible increase with increase in temperature, indicating therefore that the hetero-contact interactions are not influenced by temperature, contrary to the results obtained by Dondos and Benoit for the same copolymer system in p-xylene and iso-amyl acetate.

The purpose of this series of studies was to evaluate the biocompatibility of poly (ortho) ester (POE), copolymer of ε-caprolactone and D,L-lactide [P (ε-CL/DL-LA)] and the composite of P(ε-CL/DL-LA) and tricalciumphosphate (TCP) as bone filling material in bone defects. Tissue reactions and resorption times of two solid POE-implants (POE 140 and POE 46) with different methods of sterilization (gamma- and ethylene oxide sterilization), P(ε-CL/DL-LA)(40/60 w/w) in paste form and 50/50 w/w composite of 40/60 w/w P(ε-CL/DL-LA) and TCP and 27/73 w/w composite of 60/40 w/w P(ε-CL/DL-LA) and TCP were examined in experimental animals. The follow-up times were from one week to 52 weeks. The bone samples were evaluated histologically and the soft tissue samples histologically, immunohistochemically and electronmicroscopically. The results showed that the resorption time of gamma sterilized POE 140 was eight weeks and ethylene oxide sterilized POE 140 13 weeks in bone. The resorption time of POE 46 was more than 24 weeks. The gamma sterilized rods started to erode from the surface faster than ethylene oxide sterilized rods for both POEs. Inflammation in bone was from slight to moderate with POE 140 and moderate with POE 46. No highly fluorescent layer of tenascin or fibronectin was found in the soft tissue. Bone healing at the sites of implantation was slower than at control sites with the copolymer in small bone defects. The resorption time for the copolymer was over one year. Inflammation in bone was mostly moderate. Bone healing at the sites of implantation was also slower than at the control sites with the composite in small and large mandibular bone defects. Bone formation had ceased at both sites by the end of follow-up in large mandibular bone defects. The ultrastructure of the connective tissue was normal during the period of observation. It can be concluded that the method of sterilization influenced the resorption time of both POEs. Gamma sterilized POE 140 could have been suitable material for filling small bone defects, whereas the degradation times of solid EO-sterilized POE 140 and POE 46 were too slow to be considered as bone filling material. Solid material is difficult to contour, which can be considered as a disadvantage. The composites were excellent to handle, but the degradation time of the polymer and the composites were too slow. Therefore, the copolymer and the composite can not be recommended as bone filling material.

We derive expressions for convolution multiplication properties of discrete cosine transform II (DCT II) starting from equivalent discrete Fourier transform (DFT) representations. Using these expressions, a method for implementing linear filtering through block convolution in the DCT II domain is presented. For the case of nonsymmetric impulse response, additional discrete sine transform II (DST II) is required for implementing the filter in DCT II domain, where as for a symmetric impulse response, the additional transform is not required. Comparison with recently proposed circular convolution technique in DCT II domain shows that the proposed new method is computationally more efficient.

In this paper, we present a new feature-based approach for mosaicing of camera-captured document images. A novel block-based scheme is employed to ensure that corners can be reliably detected over a wide range of images. 2-D discrete cosine transform is computed for image blocks defined around each of the detected corners and a small subset of the coefficients is used as a feature vector A 2-pass feature matching is performed to establish point correspondences from which the homography relating the input images could be computed. The algorithm is tested on a number of complex document images casually taken from a hand-held camera yielding convincing results.

It is known that by employing space-time-frequency codes (STFCs) to frequency selective MIMO-OFDM systems, all the three diversity viz spatial, temporal and multipath can be exploited. There exists space-time-frequency block codes (STFBCs) designed using orthogonal designs with constellation precoder to get full diversity (Z.Liu, Y.Xin and G.Giannakis IEEE Trans. Signal Processing, Oct. 2002). Since orthogonal designs of rate one exists only for two transmit antennas, for more than two transmit antennas STFBCs of rate-one and full-diversity cannot be constructed using orthogonal designs. This paper presents a STFBC scheme of rate one for four transmit antennas designed using quasi-orthogonal designs along with co-ordinate interleaved orthogonal designs (Zafar Ali Khan and B. Sundar Rajan Proc: ISIT 2002). Conditions on the signal sets that give full-diversity are identified. Simulation results are presented to show the superiority of our codes over the existing ones.

In this paper, we present an analysis for the bit error rate (BER) performance of space-time block codes (STBC) from generalized complex orthogonal designs for M-PSK modulation. In STBCs from complex orthogonal designs (COD), the norms of the column vectors are the same (e.g., Alamouti code). However, in generalized COD (GCOD), the norms of the column vectors may not necessarily be the same (e.g., the rate-3/5 and rate-7/11 codes by Su and Xia in [1]). STBCs from GCOD are of interest because of the high rates that they can achieve (in [2], it has been shown that the maximum achievable rate for STBCs from GCOD is bounded by 4/5). While the BER performance of STBCs: from COD (e.g., Alamouti code) can be simply obtained from existing analytical expressions for receive diversity with the same diversity order by appropriately scaling the SNR, this can not be done for STBCs from GCOD (because of the unequal norms of the column vectors). Our contribution in this paper is that we derive analytical expressions for the BER performance of any STBC from GCOD. Our BER analysis for the GCOD captures the performance of STBCs from COD as special cases. We validate our results with two STBCs from GCOD reported by Su and Xia in [1], for 5 and 6 transmit antennas (G(5) and G(6) in [1]) with rates 7/11 and 3/5, respectively.

The Hybrid approach introduced by the authors for at-site modeling of annual and periodic streamflows in earlier works is extended to simulate multi-site multi-season streamflows. It bears significance in integrated river basin planning studies. This hybrid model involves: (i) partial pre-whitening of standardized multi-season streamflows at each site using a parsimonious linear periodic model; (ii) contemporaneous resampling of the resulting residuals with an appropriate block size, using moving block bootstrap (non-parametric, NP) technique; and (iii) post-blackening the bootstrapped innovation series at each site, by adding the corresponding parametric model component for the site, to obtain generated streamflows at each of the sites. It gains significantly by effectively utilizing the merits of both parametric and NP models. It is able to reproduce various statistics, including the dependence relationships at both spatial and temporal levels without using any normalizing transformations and/or adjustment procedures. The potential of the hybrid model in reproducing a wide variety of statistics including the run characteristics, is demonstrated through an application for multi-site streamflow generation in the Upper Cauvery river basin, Southern India. Masonry strength is dependent upon characteristics of the masonry unit, the mortar and the bond between them. Empirical formulae as well as analytical and finite element (FE) models have been developed to predict structural behaviour of masonry. This paper is focused on developing a three dimensional non-linear FE model based on micro-modelling approach to predict masonry prism compressive strength and crack pattern. The proposed FE model uses multi-linear stress-strain relationships to model the non-linear behaviour of solid masonry unit and the mortar. Willam-Warnke's five parameter failure theory developed for modelling the tri-axial behaviour of concrete has been adopted to model the failure of masonry materials. The post failure regime has been modelled by applying orthotropic constitutive equations based on the smeared crack approach. Compressive strength of the masonry prism predicted by the proposed FE model has been compared with experimental values as well as the values predicted by other failure theories and Eurocode formula. The crack pattern predicted by the FE model shows vertical splitting cracks in the prism. The FE model predicts the ultimate failure compressive stress close to 85 of the mean experimental compressive strength value.

In this study, biodegradable blend of Poly (Ethylene-co-Vinyl Acetate) (EVA) and Ethyl Cellulose (EC) were prepared. Ethylene vinyl alcohol (EVOH) copolymer was used as an interfacial compatibilizer to enhance adhesion between EVA and EC. The melt blended compatibilized biocomposites were examined for mechanical and thermal properties as per the ASTM standards. It has been found that the EC has a reinforcing effect on EVA leading to enhanced tensile strength and also impart biodegradability. Thus, a high loading of 50% EC could be added without compromising Much on the mechanical properties. Analysis of the tensile data using predictive theories showed an enhanced interaction of the dispersed phase (EC) and the matrix (EVA). The compatibilizing effects of EVOH on these blends were confirmed by the significant improvement in the mechanical properties comparable with neat EVA as also observed by SEM microscopy. The TGA thermograms exhibits two-stage degradation and as EC content increases, the onset temperature for thermal degradation reduces. (C) 2009 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.
