The present study aimed to analyze the effects of exercise performed at aerobic/anaerobic transition on non-alcoholic hepatic steatosis (NAHS) markers in diabetic rats. Adult (60 days) male Wistar rats were divided into 4 groups: sedentary control (SC), trained control (TC), sedentary diabetic (i.v. alloxan injection) (SD) and trained diabetic (TD). At the beginning of the experiment, all the animals were submitted to maximal lactate steady state test (MLSS) in order to identify the aerobic/anaerobic metabolic transition during swimming exercise. The trained groups were submitted to swimming, supporting overloads (% of body weight – b.w.) equivalent to MLSS intensity, 1h/day, 5 days/week, during 8 weeks. We analyzed: serum ALT, AST, albumin, glucose and free fat acids (FFA), body weight and total lipid concentrations in the liver. The diabetic groups showed higher (ANOVA two-way, p<0.05) serum glucose (SD=200% and TD= 150%) and weight loss (SD= 15.0% and TD= 8.5%) compared to controls and the SD showed higher glucose concentration and weight loss when compared to TD. Convencionalmente o tratamento da tuberculose se dá pela administração simultânea dos fármacos pirazinamida (PZA), rifampicina (RMP) e isoniazida (INH) durante dois meses, seguida por quatro meses da associação INH e RMP. A medicação é de uso diário e deve ser administrada de preferência em uma única dose em jejum ou, em caso de intolerância digestiva, junto com uma refeição. Esta estratégia resulta em sucesso terapêutico na maioria dos casos quando existe obediência do paciente ao regime posológico. O abandono ao tratamento pelo paciente tem sido relacionado ao longo período de exposição aos fármacos e ao aparecimento de efeitos adversos, entre eles, a hepatotoxicidade principalmente em pacientes geriátricos que apresentam deficiências nutricionais ou etilismo crônico. A utilização de associações medicamentosas, como no tratamento da tuberculose, pode resultar em interações farmacocinéticas. Considerando a importância do metabolismo da PZA no desenvolvimento da hepatotoxicidade, a capacidade de indução ou inibição enzimática dos fármacos e a probabilidade de interação farmacocinética entre a PZA, a INH e a RMP, é possível que esta associação resulte em diferentes perfis farmacocinéticos com conseqüente alteração de efeitos hepatotóxicos. Assim, o presente trabalho visa avaliar os efeitos da administração simultânea de INH e RMP sobre os parâmetros farmacocinéticos da PZA em um grupo de animais (coelhos albinos) sob tratamento com PZA e outro com PZA+INH+RMP bem como os níveis de biomarcadores de hepatotoxicidade – as transaminases AST e ALT – antes e após a administração de doses múltiplas destes fármacos

Feline hepatic lipidosis or fatty liver disease is a cholestatic syndrome that affects domestic cats and is characterized by excess fat accumulation in the liver of cats. Symptoms commonly seen with this syndrome are anorexia, weight loss, lethargy, vomiting, jaundice, and occasionally behavioral or neurologic signs such as excessive drooling, blindness, coma, and seizures. The diagnosis is based on the patient history, clinical examination, complementary examination, and the definitive diagnosis is obtained by cytology and/or histopathology of hepatic tissue. In serum biochemistry, the main findings include increased serum alkaline phosphatase (ALP), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), aspartate amino transferase (AST) and bilirubin. The gamma glutamyl transferase (GGT) is normal or slightly increased. The cornerstone of therapy is aggressive feeding to supply the cat full caloric requirements. Without aggressive nutritional support and intensive monitoring the fatty liver disease can be fatal

A introdução de um novo produto farmacêutico no mercado requer prévia realização de estudos pré-clínicos e clínicos, principalmente aqueles relacionados à toxicidade e segurança do novo composto e incluem a investigação de efeitos deletérios. Uma nova tiazolidinodiona (TZD) – lyso-07 - sintetizada pelo Laboratório de Planejamento e Síntese de Fármacos da Universidade Federal de Pernambuco foi submetida a testes em ratos wistar para avaliação de toxicidade. O estudo envolveu a utilização de 20 animais distribuídos em quatro grupos: água (1ml/0,25kg animal), suspensão (1ml/0,25kg animal), lyso-07 (4,5 mg/ml) e lyso-07 na dose equimolar da pioglitazona (3,58 mg/ml). Os resultados dos parâmetros ALT, AST, colesterol, creatinina, glicose e ureia nos grupos tratados com a lyso – 07 não apresentaram diferenças estatisticamente significativas em relação ao grupo controle, o que permite inferir que a nova molécula não apresentou hepatotoxicidade, nefrotoxicidade e disfunções dos níveis de colesterol e glicemia nas condições experimentais empregadas. Já os resultados de CK e CK-MB apresentaram resultados dispersos dentro e fora da normalidade descrita na literatura, dificultando a obtenção de resultados conclusivos quanto a cardiotoxicidade da lyso - 07. Portanto, esta molécula demonstrou-se promissora, mas ainda requer novos estudos para sua introdução futura no mercado

A Photocatalyst ceramic powder that presented high photoactivity based on TiO2 modified with 25% molar of SnO2 and up to 5% molar of Ag2O was obtained in the present work. The aforementioned ceramic powder was obtained using all commercial oxides as well as the oxides mixture technique. The powders were ground in high energy mill for one hour with subsequent thermal treatment at 400°C for four hours. They were, furthermore, characterized using surface area of around 6m2/g, where the X-Ray diffraction results provided evidence for the presence of anatase and rutile phases, known to be typical characteristics of both the TiO2 and SnO2 used. During the thermal treatment, Ag2O was reduced to metallic silver. The photodegradation rehearsals were carried out using a 0.01 mmol/L Rhodamine B solution in a 100mg/L photocatalyst suspension in a 500ml beaker, which was irradiated with 4W germicide Ultraviolet light of 254nm. In addition, samples were removed after duration of about 10 minutes to an hour, where they were analyzed thoroughly in UV-vis spectrophotometer. The analysis of the results indicated that for the compositions up to 2.5% molar of Ag2O, the photoactivity was found to be greater than that of Degussa P25 photocatalyst powder, and as such it was then used as a reference. Taking into account 90% degradation of Rhodamine B, a duration period of 11 minutes was obtained for the developed photocatalyst powder compared to the 38 minutes observed for the Degussa P25. FEG-SEM micrographies enabled the verification of the morphology as well as the interaction of the oxide particles with the metallic silver, which led us to propose a model for the increase in photoactivity observed in the photocatalyst powder under investigation.

Introduction: The HELLP syndrome is a severe complication of pregnant women with preeclampsia (PE), characterized by association of hemolysis, changes in liver enzymes and thrombocytopenia. Hemolysis, defined by the presence of microangiopathic hemolytic anemia, is one of the characteristics in this syndrome. However, as hemolysis occurs in a short time there is some difficulty in its laboratory diagnosis. Therefore, the search for a more sensitive and specific method for hemolysis determination may help in the early diagnosis of the HELLP syndrome. Objectives: a) To determine the plasma concentration of haptoglobin in normotensive pregnant women and in pregnant women with PE, classified into mild PE, severe PE and HELLP/partial HELLP syndrome; b) To compare the efficacy of haptoglobin plasma concentration and serum total bilirubin as criteria for hemolysis diagnosis in HELLP/partial HELLP syndrome. Methods: We conducted a cross-sectional analytical and comparative study involving 66 pregnant women diagnosed with PE, being 25 cases with mild PE, 28 with severe PE, and 13 with HELLP/partial HELLP syndrome. Twenty-one normotensive pregnant women were included for comparison of haptoglobin plasma concentration between the groups and to determine the normal values for pregnant women. The variables studied were: maternal age, gestational age, systolic and diastolic blood pressure, proteinuria, hematocrit and hemoglobin values, platelet count, serum total bilirubin, lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), glutamic oxaloacetic transaminase (AST) and glutamic-pyruvic transaminase (ALT), urea, creatinine and uric acid, and also plasma concentrations of haptoglobin. The results were analyzed by nonparametric tests, with a significance level of 5%.
