The use of polymer based magnetoelectric materials for sensing and actuation applications has been the subject of increasing scientific and technological interest. One of the drawbacks to be overcome in this field is to increase the temperature range of application above 100 ºC. In this way, a nanocomposite material composed by a mixture of two aromatic diamines, 1,3-Bis-2-cyano-3-(3 aminophenoxy)phenoxybenzene (diamine 2CN) and 1,3-Bis(3-aminophenoxy)benzene (diamine 0CN) and CoFe2O4 (CFO) nanoparticles was designed, fabricated and successfully tested for high temperature magnetoelectric applications. Results revealed that CFO nanoparticles are well distributed within the 0CN2CN polymer matrix and that the addition of CFO nanoparticles does not significantly alter the polyimides structure. The magnetization response of the composite is determined by the CFO nanoparticle content. The piezoelectric response of the 0CN2CN polymer matrix (≈11 pC.N-1) and the maximum α33 value (0.8mV.cm-1.Oe-1) are stable over time and decrease only when the composite is subjected to temperatures above 130 ºC. Strategies to further improve the ME response are also discussed.

Multiarm star polymers are attractive materials due to their unusual bulk and solution properties. They are considered analogues of dendrimers with a wide range of applications, such as drug delivery, membranes, coatings and lithography.1 The advent of controlled polymerization made possible the existence of this unique class of organic nanoparticles (ONPs).2 Two major synthetic strategies are usually employed in the preparation of star polymers, the core-first and arm-first approaches. The core-first approach involves a controlled living polymerization using a multiarm initiator core while the arm-first methodology is based in the quenching of living polymers with multifunctional coupling agent or bifunctional vinyl compounds. Herein, we present the synthesis and characterization of a new star polymer, the multiarm star poly(2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate). The tetra-armed star polymer was prepared by reversible addition fragmentation chain-transfer (RAFT) polymerization using the core-first approach. The RAFT chain-transfer agent (RAFT CTA) pentaerythritol tetrakis[2-(dodecylthiocarbonothioylthio)-2-methylpropionate] was used as multiarm initiator core were 2-hydroxyethyl methacrylate (HEMA) was polymerized using AIBN as radical initiator. Structural characterization was performed by 1H NMR and FTIR. The new polymer is able to uptake large quantities of organic solvents, forming gels. The rheological behavior of these gels was also investigated.

Supramolecular hydrogels rely on small molecules that self-assemble in water as a result of the cooperative effect of several relatively weak intermolecular interactions. Peptide-based low molecular weight hydrogelators have attracted enormous interest owing to the simplicity of small molecules combined with the versatility and biocompatibility of peptides. In this work, naproxen, a well known non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drug, was N-conjugated with various dehydrodipeptides to give aromatic peptide amphiphiles that resist proteolysis. Molecular dynamics simulations were used to obtain insight into the underlying molecular mechanism of self-assembly and to rationalize the design of this type of hydrogelators. The results obtained were in excellent agreement with the experimental observations. Only dehydrodipeptides having at least one aromatic amino acid gave hydrogels. The characterization of the hydrogels was carried out using transmission electron microscopy (TEM), circular dichroism (CD), fluorescence spectroscopy and also rheological assays.

The use of chemicals and chemical derivatives in agriculture and industry has contributed to their accumulation and persistence in the environment. Persistent organic pollutants (POPs) are among the environmental pollutants of most concern since, when improperly handled and disposed, they can persist in the environment, bioaccumulate through the food web, and may create serious public health and environmental problems. Development of an effective degradation process has become an area of intense research. The physical/chemical methods employed, such as volatilization, evaporation, photooxidation, adsorption, or hydrolysis, are not always effective, are very expensive, and, sometimes, lead to generation/disposal of other contaminants. Biodegradation is one of the major mechanisms by which organic contaminants are transformed, immobilized, or mineralized in the environment. A clear understanding of the major processes that affect the interactions between organic contaminants, microorganisms, and environmental matrix is, thus, important for determining persistence of the compounds, for predicting in situ transformation rates, and for developing site remediation. Information on their risks and impact and occurrence in the different environmental matrices is also important, in order to attenuate their impact and apply the appropriate remediation process. This chapter provides information on the fate of pesticides and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs), their impact, bioavailability, and biodegradation. © Springer Science+Business Media Dordrecht 2014.
