We present deep Washington photometry of 45 poorly populated star cluster candidates in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have performed a systematic study to estimate the parameters of the cluster candidates by matching theoretical isochrones to the cleaned and dereddened cluster color-magnitude diagrams. We were able to estimate the basic parameters for 33 clusters, out of which 23 are identified as single clusters and 10 are found to be members of double clusters. The other 12 cluster candidates have been classified as possible clusters/asterisms. About 50% of the true clusters are in the 100-300 Myr age range, whereas some are older or younger. We have discussed the distribution of age, location, and reddening with respect to field, as well as the size of true clusters. The sizes and masses of the studied sample are found to be similar to that of open clusters in the Milky Way. Our study adds to the lower end of cluster mass distribution in the LMC, suggesting that the LMC, apart from hosting rich clusters, also has formed small, less massive open clusters in the 100-300 Myr age range.

We report the morphology-controlled synthesis of aluminium (Al) doped zinc oxide (ZnO) nanosheets on Al alloy (AA-6061) substrate by a low-temperature solution growth method without using any external seed layer and doping process. Doped ZnO nanosheets were obtained at low temperatures of 60-90 degrees C for the growth time of 4 hours. In addition to the synthesis, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes of ZnO nanosheets is also reported. As-synthesized nanosheets are characterized by FE-SEM, XRD TEM and XPS for their morphology, crystallinity, microstructure and compositional analysis respectively. The doping of Al in ZnO nanosheets is confirmed with EDXS and XPS. Furthermore, the effect of growth temperature on the morphological changes was studied in the range of 50 to 95 degrees C. It was found that the thickness and height of the nanosheets varied with respect to the growth temperature. The study has given an important insight into the structural morphology with respect to the growth temperature, which in turn enabled us to determine the growth temperature window for the ZnO nanosheets. These Al doped ZnO nanosheets have potential application possibilities in gas sensors, solar cells and energy harvesting devices like nanogenerators.

The flow characteristics of a near eutectic Al-Si based cast alloy have been examined in compression at strain rates varying from 3 x 10(-4) to 10(2) s(-1) and at three different temperatures, i.e., room temperature (RT), 100 degrees C and 200 degrees C. The dependence of the flow behavior on heat treatment is studied by testing the alloy in non-heat treated (NHT) and heat treated (HT) conditions. The heat treatment has strong influence on strain rate sensitivity (SRS), strength and work hardening behavior of the alloy. It is observed that the strength of the alloy increases with increase in strain rate and it increases more rapidly above the strain rate of 10(-1) s(-1) in HT condition at all the temperatures, and at 100 degrees C and 200 degrees C in NHT condition. The thermally dependent process taking place in the HT matrix is responsible for the observed greater SRS in HT condition. The alloy in HT condition exhibits a larger work hardening rate than in NHT condition during initial stages of straining. However, the hardening rate decreases more sharply at higher strains in HT condition due to precipitate shearing and higher rate of Si particle fracture. Thermal hardening is observed at 200 degrees C in NHT condition due to precipitate formation, which results in increased SRS at higher temperatures. Thermal softening is observed in HT condition at 200 C due to precipitate coarsening, which leads to a decrease in SRS at higher temperatures. Stress simulations by a finite element method support the experimentally observed particle and matrix fracture behavior. A negative SRS and serrated flow are observed in the lower strain rate regime (3 x 10(-4)-10(-2) s(-1)) at RT and 100 degrees C, in both NHT and HT conditions. The observations show that both dynamic strain aging (DSA) and precipitate shearing play a role in serrated flow. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A micromechanical approach is considered here to predict the deformation behaviour of Rheocast A356 (Al-Si-Mg) alloy. Two representative volume elements (RVEs) are modelled in the finite element (FE) framework. Two dimensional approximated microstructures are generated assuming elliptic grains, based on the grain size, shape factor and area fraction of the primary Al phase of the said alloy at different processing condition. Plastic instability is shown using stress and strain distribution between the Al rich primary and Si rich eutectic phases under different boundary conditions. Boundary conditions are applied on the approximated RVEs in such a manner, so that they represent the real life situation depending on their position on a cylindrical tensile test sample. FE analysis is carried out using commercial finite element code ABAQUS without specifying any damage or failure criteria. Micro-level in-homogeneity leads to incompatible deformation between the constituent phases of the rheocast alloy and steers plastic strain localisation. Plastic stain localised regions within the RVEs are predicted as the favourable sites for void nucleation. Subsequent growth of nucleated voids leads to final failure of the materials under investigation.

We describe a group of alloys with ultrahigh strength of about 2 GPa at 700 degrees C and exceptional oxidation resistance to 1100 degrees C. These alloys exploit intermetallic phases with stable oxide forming elements that combine to form fine nanometric scale structures through eutectic transformations in ternary systems. The alloys offer engineering tensile plasticity of about 4% at room temperature though both conventional dislocation mechanisms and twinning in the more complex intermetallic constituent, along with slip lengths that are restricted by the interphase boundaries in the eutectics.

Interdiffusion study is conducted in the Ni-rich part of the beta-Ni(Pt)Al phase following the pseudo-binary approach. Interdiffusion coefficients over the whole composition range considered in this study increases with increase in Pt content, which is in line with the theoretical study predicting the decrease in vacancy formation and migration energy because of Pt addition. The trend of change in diffusion coefficient with the increase in Ni and Pt contents indicates that Pt preferably replaces Ni antisites.
Determination of band offsets at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 interface using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy
Resumo:
The Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 semiconductor heterojunction was fabricated. The structural and optical properties of the semiconductor materials were studied. The band offset at the Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction was studied using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy technique. From the measurement of the core level energies and valence band maximum of the constituent elements, the valence band offset was calculated to be -1.1 +/- 0.24 eV and the conduction band offset was 0.9 +/- 0.34 eV. The band alignment at the heterojunction was found to be of type-I. The study of Al:ZnO/Cu2SnS3 heterojunction is useful for solar cell applications. (C) 2015 Author(s). In recent years, semisolid manufacturing has emerged as an attractive option for near net shape forming of components with aluminum alloys. In this class of processes, the key to success lies mainly in the understanding of rheological behavior of the semi-solid slurry in the temperature range between liquidus and solidus. The present study focuses on the non-Newtonian flow behavior of the pseudo plastic slurry of Al-7Si-0.3Mg alloy for a wide shear range using a high-temperature Searle-type rheometer. The rheological behavior of the slurry is studied with respect to relevant process variables and microstructural features such as shear rate, shear duration, temperature history, primary particle size, shape, and their distribution. The experiments performed are isothermal tests, continuous cooling tests, shear jump tests, and shear time tests. The continuous cooling experiments are aimed toward studying the viscosity and shear stress evolution within the slurry matrix with increasing solid fraction at a constant shear rate. Three different cooling rates are considered and their effect on flow behavior of the slurry was studied under iso-shear condition. Descending shear jump experiments are performed to understand the viscous instability of the slurry.

Developments of aluminum alloys that can retain strength at and above 250 degrees C present a significant challenge. In this paper we report an ultrafine scale Al-Fe-Ni eutectic alloy with less than 3.5 aa transition metals that exhibits room temperature ultimate tensile strength of similar to 400 MPa with a tensile ductility of 6-8%. The yield stress under compression at 300 degrees C was found to be 150 MPa. We attribute it to the refinement of the microstructure that is achieved by suction casting in copper mold. The characterization using scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM and TEM) reveals an unique composite structure that contains the Al-Al3Ni rod eutectic with spacing of similar to 90 nm enveloped by a lamellar eutectic of Al-Al9FeNi (similar to 140 nm). Observation of subsurface deformation under Vickers indentation using bonded interface technique reveals the presence of extensive shear banding during deformation that is responsible for the origin of ductility. The dislocation configuration in Al-Al3Ni eutectic colony indicates accommodation of plasticity in alpha-Al with dislocation accumulation at the alpha-Al/Al3Ni interface boundaries. In contrast the dislocation activities in the intermetallic lamellae are limited and contain set of planner dislocations across the plates. We present a detailed analysis of the fracture surface to rationalize the origin of the high strength and ductility in this class of potentially promising cast alloy. (C) 2015 Elsevier B.V. The present paper reports a new class of Co based superalloys that has gamma-gamma' microstructure and exhibits much lower density compared to other commercially available Co superalloys including Co-Al-W based alloys. The basic composition is Co-10Al-5Mo (at%) with addition of 2 at% Ta for stabilization of gamma' phase. The gamma-gamma' microstructure evolves through solutionising and aging treatment. Using first principles calculations, we observe that Ta plays a crucial role in stabilizing gamma' phase. By addition of Ta in the basic stoichiometric composition Co-3(Al, Mo), the enthalpy of formation (Delta H-f) of L1(2) structure (gamma' phase) becomes more negative in comparison to DO19 structure. The All of the L12 structure becomes further more negative by the occupancy of Ni and Ti atoms in the lattice suggesting an increase in the stability of the gamma' precipitates. Among large number of alloys studied experimentally, the paper presents results of detailed investigations on Co-10Al-5Mo-2Ta, Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta and Co-30Ni-10Al-5Mo-2Ta-2Ti. To evaluate the role alloying elements, atom probe tomography investigations were carried out to obtain partition coefficients for the constituent elements. The results show strong partitioning of Ni, Al, Ta and Ti in ordered gamma' precipitates. 2015 Acta Materialia Inc. Published by Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

The link between atmospheric CO2 level and ventilation state of the deep ocean is poorly understood due to the lack of coherent observations on the partitioning of carbon between atmosphere and ocean. In this Southern Ocean study, we have classified the Southern Ocean into different zones based on its hydrological features and have binned the variability in latitudinal air-CO2 concentration and its isotopic ratios. Together with air-CO2, we analysed the surface water for the isotopic ratios in dissolved inorganic carbon (DIC). Using the binary mixing approach on the isotopic ratio of atmospheric CO2 and its concentration, we identified the delta C-13 value of source CO2. The isotopic composition of source CO2 was around -9.22 +/- 0.26 parts per thousand for the year 2011 and 2012, while a composition of -13.49 +/- 4.07 parts per thousand was registered for the year 2013. We used the delta C-13 of DIC to predict the CO2 composition in air under equilibrium and compared our estimates with actual observations. We suggest that the degeneration of the DIC in presence of warm water in the region was the factor responsible for adding the CO2 to the atmosphere above. The place of observation coincides with the zone of high wind speed which promotes the process of CO2 exsolution from sea water. (C) 2015 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In the present study, the dry sliding wear behavior of rheocast A356 Al alloys, cast using a cooling slope, as well as gravity cast A356 Al alloy have been investigated at a low sliding speed of 1ms(-1), against a hardened EN 31 disk at different loads. The wear mechanism involves microcutting-abrasion and adhesion at lower load for all of the alloys studied in the present work. On the other hand, at higher load, mainly adhesive wear along with oxide formation is observed for gravity cast A356 Al alloy and rheocast A356 Al alloy, cast using a 45 degrees slope angle. Unlike other alloys, 60 degrees slope rheocast A356 Al alloy is found to undergo mainly abrasive wear at higher load. Accordingly, the rheocast sample, cast using a 60 degrees cooling slope, exhibits a remarkably lower wear rate at higher load compared to gravity cast and 45 degrees slope rheocast samples. This is attributed to the dominance of abrasive wear at higher load in the case of rheocast A356 Al alloy cast using a 60 degrees slope. The presence of finer and more spherical primary Al grain morphology is found to resist adhesive wear in case of 60 degrees cooling slope processed rheocast alloy and thereby delay the transition of the wear regime from normal wear to severe wear.

Cu(In,Al)Se-2 films are grown using single step electrodeposition technique. The film properties are studied by varying the deposition time from 500 to 2000 s. Peaks corresponding to elemental Se and Cu2Se phase started appearing from 1200 s of deposition. The composition is changed significantly after 1500 S. Se concentration increased from 57 to 68% with the increase in the deposition time. The Cu2Se phase is dominant in the films deposited for a duration of 2000 s and the grain size increased from 1.12 to 2.15 mu m in this film. Raman analysis confirmed the presence of Se and Cu2Se phase in C1200. In C1500 and C2000 the spectra showed prominent mode corresponding to Cu2Se. The thickness of the film increased from 0.85 to 2.3 mu m with the increase in the deposition time. All the films showed p-type conductivity and resistivity reduced with increased thickness. The present work discusses the findings obtained from simulations of semi solid die filling of a steering knuckle, prior to actual component development using in-house developed rheo pressure die casting system. Die filling capability of A356 Al alloy at semi-solid state has been investigated using commercial software Flow-3Dcast to optimise the pouring temperature of semi-solid slurry into the die cavity, while all other variables such as gating design, die preheat temperature and injection velocity are kept constant based on the prior knowledge obtained from trial numerical simulations and experimentation. Efforts have been made to nullify the essence of costly, time consuming experiments towards obtaining high-quality castings out of the findings obtained from numerical simulations. The optimum pouring temperature identified in the present study is 610 A degrees C, which facilitates smoother slurry flow, minimum surface defect concentration, uniform temperature field and solid fraction distribution within the component cavity.
