Para garantir que um equipamento opere com segurança e fiabilidade durante o seu ciclo de vida, desde a sua instalação ao desmantelamento, devem ser realizadas inspeções e/ou monitorizações que, dependendo dos dados recolhidos, podem implicar avaliações Fitness- For-Service (FFS) que definirão a necessidade de reparação ou alteração do equipamento ou das condições processuais. A combinação de inspeção ou monitorização com os melhores procedimentos e técnicas de avaliação atuais fazem sobressair insuficiências dos procedimentos mais antigos. Usando métodos mais avançados de avaliação, validados e suportados através de uma vasta experiência de campo, pode-se agora avaliar defeitos nos ativos (equipamentos) e determinar a adequação ao serviço com uma análise FFS. As análises FFS tornaram-se cada vez mais aceites em toda a indústria ao longo dos últimos anos. A norma API 579 - 1/ASME FFS-1: 2007 fornece diretrizes para avaliar os tipos de danos que afetam os equipamentos processuais e a norma API RP 571: 2011 descreve os mecanismos de degradação que afetam os equipamentos nas petroquímicas e refinarias, que incluem os danos por corrosão, desalinhamentos, deformações plásticas, laminações, fissuras, entre outros. Este trabalho consiste na análise de Integridade Estrutural de uma Flare Industrial que surgiu da necessidade real de análise do equipamento no âmbito da atividade profissional do candidato. O estudo realizado a nível profissional é de grande abrangência, incluindo a inspeção do equipamento, identificação da falha ou dano, recolha e registo de dados, definição de estratégia de atuação e seleção de técnicas de avaliação da condição para posterior alteração, reparação ou desmantelamento. Na presente dissertação de mestrado em Engenharia Mecânica, Ramo Construções Mecânicas, pretende-se efetuar o estudo aprofundado de uma das etapas de projeto, nomeadamente estudar a causa, avaliar a falha e implicações estruturais ou processuais devido à degradação interior do riser de uma flare, com base numa análise FFS, assumindo a operabilidade em segurança e garantindo resolutas condições de funcionamento. A presente análise FFS tem como finalidade validar ou não a integridade atual (avaliação técnica quantitativa) de modo a conhecer se o item em questão é seguro e confiável para continuar a operar em condições específicas durante um período de tempo determinado, tendo em consideração as condições verificadas no ato de inspeção e especificações de projeto, segundo os itens de verificação de segurança estabelecidos na norma EN 1990:2002/A1:2005/AC:2010 e com base na norma API 579-1/ASME FFS-1: 2007. No âmbito do presente trabalho foram realizadas as seguintes tarefas: - Identificar e analisar os mecanismos de degradação com base na norma API RP 571: 2011, face às condições processuais e geométricas que o equipamento em análise está sujeito de modo a perceber a evolução da degradação estrutural e quais as implicações na sua longevidade. - Avaliar e propor soluções de reparação e ou alterações processuais e ou geométricas do equipamento em análise de modo a permitir a continuidade em funcionamento sem afetar as condições de segurança e por conseguinte minimizar ou evitar o elevado custo económico associado a um novo equipamento e tempo de paragem processual. - Assumir limites estruturais face às condições processuais e ações externas ou adjacentes. - Garantir a segurança e qualidade da vida humana ou meio que o rodeia, do equipamento, das instalações, das infraestruturas envolventes e evitar o colapso económico, quer por motivos processuais, quer indeminizações ou agravamento do prémio do seguro. Verificou-se que os resultados serão a base para as alterações inerentes, tais como reforço estrutural, alteração da geometria do defletor, ajuste no tensionamento dos cabos e controlo da espessura mínima, de modo a alargar o período de vida útil da flare com segurança.

RESUMO - Nas últimas décadas, a especialização dos cuidados médicos tem conduzido a uma fragmentação do sistema de prestação, que, associada a uma deficiente coordenação entre serviços, cuidados e prestadores, torna a navegabilidade dos utentes nos sistemas de saúde uma tarefa complexa. Um novo modelo de organização, assente na procura de valor para os cidadãos, deve adoptar uma abordagem sistémica, que tenha subjacente uma coordenação integrada de serviços, numa perspectiva de ciclo de cuidados. Reorientar a prestação de cuidados para a obtenção de resultados e valor em saúde, exige uma reengenharia em torno da estrutura, organização e avaliação1 dos cuidados, requerendo, nomeadamente: i) instrumentos e ferramentas que auxiliem e estruturem este novo modelo; ii) assumpção dos papéis definidos para cada um dos actores do sistema, nomeadamente ao nível da coordenação; iii) encorajamento à adopção de modelos de contratualização, pagamento e competição, que responsabilizem os actores envolvidos não só pela prática que desenvolvem, mas pelos resultados em saúde. Estes mecanismos constituem uma oportunidade para expandir e sustentar abordagens, programas e intervenções integradas. Investir num sistema de pagamento por valor em saúde — P4V — payment for value, traduz uma aposta na relação entre diagnóstico, tratamento, resultados clínicos e custos, enquanto estratégia para assegurar ganhos em qualidade dos cuidados, eficiência dos processos e valor em saúde para o cidadão. Neste contexto, a gestão da doença enquanto modelo direccionado para o reforço da perspectiva e participação activa do cidadão, e avaliação compreensiva de novas formas de organização e gestão do sistema de prestação, constitui um instrumento para informar e sustentar esse processo de reengenharia do sistema. Um modelo que procura assegurar o encontro entre o estado da arte na prestação de cuidados e um nível óptimo, garantindo a qualidade de vida expectável para a pessoa com doença crónica. ----------------- ---------ABSTRACT – In the last decades advanced medical sciences trend to specialized care and fragmented health systems, leaving patients with a challenge on navigating services and care, requiring them to see a sequence of specialists each delivering discrete interventions. To overcome these challenges, every health system must redefine health care delivery to use its resources more efficiently and improve quality of care through an organization of the system as a whole. A system currently organized around value for patients, entails a framework that comprises the entire set of activities needed to address a patient´s medical condition, over the full cycle of care. Value- based care delivery therefore requires an integrated practice, both across services and time, and implies a movement through new structures, organization models, evaluation efforts and payment systems that enables, catalyze and reinforces the extension and sustainability of the steps needed to the change required. A shift from a payment for performance to a payment for value focuses attention on maximizing the overall value of care, and encourages coordination and integration between components of care that extends from screening, diagnoses, all the way through treatment, outcomes and costs, and ensuring an incentive for potentially high value types of care as well as innovation. These leave the actors of the system with the task of best allocating and valuing components of care. Disease management as a model designed to structure patient engagement and involvement in their care, and assure a comprehensive evaluation and monitoring of new organization and care delivery strategies align an opportunity as a source of information and sustainability for the progress of a growing number of likeminded efforts now underway across care delivery for chronic diseases. Water is a limited resource for which demand is growing. Contaminated water from inadequate wastewater treatment provides one of the greatest health challenges as it restricts development and increases poverty in emerging and developing countries. Therefore, the connection between wastewater and human health is linked to access to sanitation and to human waste disposal. Adequate sanitation is expected to create a barrier between disposed human excreta and sources of drinking water. Different approaches to wastewater management are required for different geographical regions and different stages of economic governance depending on the capacity to manage wastewater. Effective wastewater management can contribute to overcome the challenges of water scarcity. Separate collection of human urine at its source is one promising approach that strongly reduces the economic and load demands on wastewater treatment plants (WWTP). Treatment of source-separated urine appears as a sanitation system that is affordable, produces a valuable fertiliser, reduces pollution of water resources and promotes health. However, the technical realisation of urine separation still faces challenges. Biological hydrolysis of urea causes a strong increase of ammonia and pH. Under these conditions ammonia volatilises which can cause odour problems and significant nitrogen losses. The above problems can be avoided by urine stabilisation. Biological nitrification is a suitable process for stabilisation of urine. Urine is a highly concentrated nutrient solution which can lead to strong inhibition effects during bacterial nitrification. This can further lead to process instabilities. The major cause of instability is accumulation of the inhibitory intermediate compound nitrite, which could lead to process breakdown. Enhanced on-line nitrite monitoring can be applied in biological source-separated urine nitrification reactors as a sustainable and efficient way to improve the reactor performance, avoiding reactor failures and eventual loss of biological activity. Spectrophotometry appears as a promising candidate for the development and application of on-line nitrite monitoring. Spectroscopic methods together with chemometrics are presented in this work as a powerful tool for estimation of nitrite concentrations. Principal component regression (PCR) is applied for the estimation of nitrite concentrations using an immersible UV sensor and off-line spectra acquisition. The effect of particles and the effect of saturation, respectively, on the UV absorbance spectra are investigated. The analysis allows to conclude that (i) saturation has a substantial effect on nitrite estimation; (ii) particles appear to have less impact on nitrite estimation. In addition, improper mixing together with instabilities in the urine nitrification process appears to significantly reduce the performance of the estimation model.

Transport is an essential sector in modern societies. It connects economic sectors and industries. Next to its contribution to economic development and social interconnection, it also causes adverse impacts on the environment and results in health hazards. Transport is a major source of ground air pollution, especially in urban areas, and therefore contributing to the health problems, such as cardiovascular and respiratory diseases, cancer, and physical injuries. This thesis presents the results of a health risk assessment that quantifies the mortality and the diseases associated with particulate matter pollution resulting from urban road transport in Hai Phong City, Vietnam. The focus is on the integration of modelling and GIS approaches in the exposure analysis to increase the accuracy of the assessment and to produce timely and consistent assessment results. The modelling was done to estimate traffic conditions and concentrations of particulate matters based on geo-references data. A simplified health risk assessment was also done for Ha Noi based on monitoring data that allows a comparison of the results between the two cases. The results of the case studies show that health risk assessment based on modelling data can provide a much more detail results and allows assessing health impacts of different mobility development options at micro level. The use of modeling and GIS as a common platform for the integration of different assessments (environmental, health, socio-economic, etc.) provides various strengths, especially in capitalising on the available data stored in different units and forms and allows handling large amount of data. The use of models and GIS in a health risk assessment, from a decision making point of view, can reduce the processing/waiting time while providing a view at different scales: from micro scale (sections of a city) to a macro scale. It also helps visualising the links between air quality and health outcomes which is useful discussing different development options. However, a number of improvements can be made to further advance the integration. An improved integration programme of the data will facilitate the application of integrated models in policy-making. Data on mobility survey, environmental monitoring and measuring must be standardised and legalised. Various traffic models, together with emission and dispersion models, should be tested and more attention should be given to their uncertainty and sensitivity

Oceans have shown tremendous importance and impact on our lives. Thus the need for monitoring and protecting the oceans has grown exponentially in recent years. On the other hand, oceans have economical and industrial potential in areas such as pharmaceutical, oil, minerals and biodiversity. This demand is increasing and the need for high data rate and near real-time communications between submerged agents became of paramount importance. Among the needs for underwater communications, streaming video (e.g. for inspecting risers or hydrothermal vents) can be seen as the top challenge, which when solved will make all the other applications possible. Presently, the only reliable approach for underwater video streaming relies on wired connections or tethers (e.g. from ROVs to the surface) which presents severe operational constraints that makes acoustic links together with AUVs and sensor networks strongly appealing. Using new polymer-based acoustic transducers, which in very recent works have shown to have bandwidth and power efficiency much higher than the usual ceramics, this article proposes the development of a reprogrammable acoustic modem for operating in underwater communications with video streaming capabilities. The results have shown a maximum data-rate of 1Mbps with a simple modulation scheme such as OOK, at a distance of 20 m.

Isoprene emission from plants accounts for about one third of annual global volatile organic compound emissions. The largest source of isoprene for the global atmosphere is the Amazon Basin. This study aimed to identify and quantify the isoprene emission and photosynthesis at different levels of light intensity and leaf temperature, in three phenological phases (young mature leaf, old mature leaf and senescent leaf) of Eschweilera coriacea (Matamatá verdadeira), the species with the widest distribution in the central Amazon. In situ photosynthesis and isoprene emission measurements showed that young mature leaf had the highest rates at all light intensities and leaf temperatures. Additionally, it was observed that isoprene emission capacity (Es) changed considerably over different leaf ages. This suggests that aging leads to a reduction of both leaf photosynthetic activity and isoprene production and emission. The algorithm of Guenther et al. (1999) provided good fits to the data when incident light was varied, however differences among E S of all leaf ages influenced on quantic yield predicted by model. When leaf temperature was varied, algorithm prediction was not satisfactory for temperature higher than ~40 °C; this could be because our data did not show isoprene temperature optimum up to 45 °C. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis of the isoprene functional role in protecting plants from high temperatures and highlight the need to include leaf phenology effects in isoprene emission models.

The aim of this study was to investigate the effects of biosurfactants and organic matter amendments on the bioremediation of diesel contaminated soil. Two strains of Pseudomonas aeruginosa with the ability to produce biosurfactant were isolated from a water and soil sample in Co. Sligo. The first strain, Isolate A, produced a biosurfactant which contained four rhamnose containing compounds, when grown in proteose peptone glucose ammonium salts medium with glucose as the carbon source. Two of the components were identified as rhamnolipid 1 and 2 whilst the other two components were unidentified. The second strain, Isolate GO, when grown in similar conditions produced a biosurfactant which contained only rhamnolipid 2. The type of aeration system used had a significant effect on the abiotic removal of diesel from soil. Forced aeration at a rate of 120L 02/kg soil/ hour resulted in the greatest removal. Over a 112 day incubation period this type o f aeration resulted in the removal o f 48% o f total hexane extractable material. In relation to bioremediation of the diesel contaminated sandy soil, amending the soil with two inorganic nutrients, KH2PO4 and NÜ4N03, significantly enhanced the removal of diesel, especially the «- alkanes, when compared to an unamended control. The biosurfactant from Isolate A and a biosurfactant produced by Pseudomonas aeruginosa NCIMB 8628 (a known biosurfactant producer), when applied at a concentration of three times their critical micelle concentration, had a neutral effect on the biodégradation o f diesel contaminated sandy soil, even in the presence o f inorganic nutrients. It was deduced that the main reason for this neutral effect was because they were both readily biodegraded by the indigenous microorganisms. The most significant removal of diesel occurred when the soils were amended with two organic materials plus the inorganic nutrients. Amendment of the diesel contaminated soil with spent brewery grain (SBG) removed significantly more diesel than amendment with dried molassed sugar beet pulp (DMSBP). After a 108 day incubation period, amendment of the diesel contaminated soil with DMSBP plus inorganic nutrients and SBG plus inorganic nutrients resulted in 72 and 89% removal of diesel range organics (DRO), in comparison to 41% removal of DRO in an inorganic nutrient amended control. The first order kinetic model described the degradation of the different diesel components with high correlation and was used to calculate Vi lives. The V2 life, of the total «-alkanes in the diesel was reduced from 40 days in the control to 8.5 and 5.1 days in the presence of DMSBP and SBG, respectively. The V2 life o f the unresolved complex mixture (UCM) in the diesel contaminated soil was also significantly reduced in the presence o f the two organics. DMSBP and SBG addition reduced UCM V2 life to 86 and 43 days, respectively, compared to 153 days in the control. The component of diesel whose removal was enhanced the greatest through the organic material amendments was the isoprenoid, pristane, a compound which until recently was thought to be nonbiodegradable and was used as an inert biomarker in oil degradation studies. The V2 life of pristane was reduced from 533 days in the nutrient amended control to 49.5 and 19.5 days in DMSBP and SBG amended soils. These results indicate that the addition o f the DMSBP and SBG to diesel contaminated soil stimulated diesel biodégradation, probably by enhancing the indigenous diesel degrading microbial population to degrade diesel hydrocarbons, whilst the addition o f biosurfactants had no enhanced effect on the bioremediation process.

This work presents the results of an investigation of processes in the melting zone during Electron Beam Welding(EBW) through analysis of the secondary current in the plasma.The studies show that the spectrum of the secondary emission signal during steel welding has a pronounced periodic component at a frequency of around 15–25 kHz. The signal contains quasi-periodic sharp peaks (impulses). These impulses have stochastically varying amplitude and follow each other inseries, at random intervals between series. The impulses have a considerable current (up to 0.5 A). It was established that during electron-beam welding with the focal spot scanning these impulses follow each other almost periodically. It was shown that the probability of occurrence of these high-frequency perturbation increases with the concentration of energy in the interaction zone. The paper also presents hypotheses for the mechanism of the formation of the high-frequency oscillations in the secondary current signal in the plasma.
