Lithium-ion conduction in mixed-metal phosphates, (LiMMIII)-M-V(PO,), [M-V = Nb, Ta; M-III = Al, Cr, Fe], possessing the rhombohedral (R (3) over bar c) NASICON structure has been investigated. Among the phosphates investigated, LiTaAl(PO4)(3) exhibits the highest conductivity, sigma approximate to 1.0 x 10(-2) S cm(-1) at 350 degrees C (E-a = 0.47 eV), comparable to the conductivity of LiTi2(PO4)(3). Unlike LiTi2(PO4)(3) which contains lithium-reducible Ti-IV, LiTaAl(PO4)(3) contains stable Ta-V and Al-III oxidation states and hence deserves further attention towards tailoring new lithium-ion conductors for application as electrolytes in solid state lithium batteries.

Modification of the room temperature phase (IV-III) of ammonium nitrate (AN) has been attempted using a variety of potassium salts namely, KF, KCl, KI, KNO3, K2CO3, K2SO4, KSCN and K2Cr2O7. No phase transition was observed when AN containing 1-2% by mass of these potassium salts is heated from room temperature (25 degrees C) onwards in DTA and DSC scans, but the linear expansion due to phase transition was still observable in TMA measurements. Complete arrest of the linear expansion occurs only when a higher concentration of the additive is used. Similarly, in thermal cycling experiments, complete phase modification in the temperature range -80 to 100 degrees C occurs only with a higher percentage of the potassium salt. The extent of modification, however, is found to be dependent both on the concentration, and the type of the anion. Potassium dichromate when used as an additive modifies the phase as well as the decomposition pattern of AN.

Six disaccharide amphiphiles were synthesized and their hydrogel-forming behavior was extensively studied. These amphiphiles were based on maltose and lactose. Since the gels formed from some of these systems showed the ability to "trap" water molecules upon gelation, these gels were described as "hydrogels". When these gels were heated to similar to 70 degrees C, the samples turned into clear, isotropic fluids, and upon gradual cooling, the hydrogels could be reproduced. Thus these systems were also "thermoreversible". The low molecular mass (MW 565) of the gelators compared to that of a typical polymeric gelator forming substance implies pronounced aggregation of the disaccharide amphiphiles into larger microstructures during gelation. To discern the aggregate textures and morphologies, the specimen hydrogel samples were examined by high-resolution scanning electron microscopy (SEM). A possible reason for the exceptionally high water gelating capacities (>6000 molecules of water per gelator molecule) exhibited by these N-alkyl disaccharide amphiphiles is the presence of large interlamellar spaces into which the water molecules get entrapped due to surface tension. In contrast to their single-chain counterparts, the double-chain lactosyl and maltosylamine amphiphiles upon solubilization in EtOH-H2O afforded hydrogels with reduced mechanical strengths. Interestingly, the corresponding microstructures were found to be quite different from the corresponding hydrogels of their single-chain counterparts. Rheological studies provided further insights into the behavior of these hydrogels. Varying the chain length of the alcohol cosolvent could modulate the gelation capacities, melting temperatures, and the mechanical properties of these hydrogels. To explain the possible reasons of gelation, the results of molecular modeling and energy minimization studies were also included.

A new series of twin nonlinear optical (NLO) molecules, having two 4-nitrophenol chromophores that are linked via a flexible polymethylene spacer of varying length [(CH2)(n), n = 1-12], were synthesized. Powder second harmonic generation measurements of these twin samples indicated a pronounced odd-even oscillation, with the odd twins exhibiting a high SHG value while the even ones gave no measurable SH signal. This behavior reflects the crystal packing preferences in such twin NLO systems that have odd and even numbers of atoms linking them - the even ones appear to prefer a centrosymmetric packing arrangement. The orientational/disordering dynamics of these twin NLO molecules, doped in a polymer (poly(methyl methacrylate)) matrix, has also been studied using SHG in electric field poled samples. Interestingly, the maximum attainable SH signal, chi((2)), in, the poled samples also showed an odd-even oscillation; the odd ones again having a higher value of chi((2)) This unprecedented odd-even oscillation in such molecularly doped systems is rationalized as being due to the intrinsically greater ease of a parallel alignment of the two chromophores in the twins with an odd spacer than in those with an even one. Further, the temporal stability of the SHG intensity at 70 degrees C, after the removal of the applied corona, was also studied. The relaxation of all the twin chromophores followed a biexponential decay; the characteristic relaxation time (tau(2)) for the slow decay component suggests that while the twin with a single methylene unit relaxes relatively slowly, the relaxation is significantly faster in cases where n = 2 and 3. In the twins with even longer spacer segments, the relaxation again becomes slower and reaches a saturation value. The observed minimum appears to reflect the interplay of two competing factors that affect the chromophore alignment in such twin systems, namely, the electrostatic repulsion between neighboring oriented dipoles and the intrinsic flexibility of the spacer.

Maleic anhydride (MAH) has been grafted onto high density polyethylene (HDPE) with benzoyl peroxide (BOP) initiator in toluene solution. Maximum degree of grafting (12%) without crosslinking has been obtained using MAH/HDPE and BOP/HDPE weight ratios of 1.0 and 0.15 respectively, at 110 degrees C. The HDPE-g-MAH compatibilizer is found to drastically reduce the dispersed phase size and also to produce homogeneous blends for relatively low concentrations of dispersed phase in HDPE/nylon blends. Addition of this compatibilizer results in increase of tensile strength and modulus with increasing nylon content of HDPE/nylon blends, while the opposite is found for the blends without any added compatibilizer.

Fine particle and large surface area Cu/CeO2 catalysts of crystallite sizes in the range of 100-200 Angstrom synthesized by the solution combustion method have been investigated for NO reduction. Five percent Cu/CeO2 catalyst shows nearly 100% conversion of NO by NH3 below 300 degrees C, whereas pure ceria and Zr, Y, and Ca doped ceria show 85-95% NO conversion above 600 degrees C. Similarly NO reduction by CO has been observed over 5% Cu/CeO2 with nearly 100% conversion below 300 degrees C. Hydrocarbon (n-butane) oxidation by NO to CO2, N-2, and H2O has also been demonstrated over this catalyst below 350 degrees C making Cu/CeO2 a new NO reduction catalyst in the low temperature window of 150-350 degrees C. Kinetics of NO reduction over 5% Cu/CeO2 have also been investigated. The rate constants are in the range of 1.4 x 10(4) to 2.3 x 10(4) cm(3) g(-1) s(-1) between 170 and 300 degrees C. Cu/CeO2 catalysts are characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy, X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy, and electron paramagnetic resonance spectroscopy where Cu2+ ions are shown to be dispersed on the CeO2 surface. The laser ablated barium strontium titanate (BST) thin films were characterized in terms of composition, structure, microstructure and electrical properties. Films deposited at 300 degrees C under 50 mTorr oxygen pressure and 3 J cm(-2) laser fluence and further annealed at 600 degrees C in flowing oxygen showed a dielectric constant of 467 and a dissipation factor of 0.02. The room-temperature current-voltage characteristics revealed a space charge limited conduction (SCLC) mechanism, though at low fields the effect of the electrodes was predominant. The conduction mechanism was thoroughly-investigated in terms of Schottky emission at low fields, and bulk-limited SCLC at high fields. The change over to the bulk-limited conduction process from the electrode-limited Schottky emission was, attributed to the process of tunneling through the electrode interface at high fields resulting into the lowering of the electrode contact resistance and consequently giving rise to a bulk limited conduction process. The predominance of SCLC mechanism in the films suggests that the bulk properties are only revealed if the depletion width at the electrode interface is thin enough to allow the tunneling process to take place. This condition is only favorable if the him thickness is high or if the doping concentration is high enough. In the present case the film thickness ranged from 0.3 to 0.7 mu m which was suitable to show the transition mentioned above. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science S.A. All rights reserved.

Nanoparticles of titania were obtained by the controlled hydrolysis of Ti(i-OC3H7)(4) in the reverse micelles of dodecylamine derived from dodecylamine-isopropanol-water solution (water/oil microemulsion). The mesolamellar phase based on titanium nitride (TiN) was obtained by first decomposing TiN atleast partially using the 1:1 solution of acid mixture (HF and HNO3 in the ratio of 9:1) in water and then templating onto the cationic surfactant namely, cetyltrimethylammaniumbromide (abbreviated as CTAB) at 80 degrees C. The synthesis of mesolamellar phase based on TiN involves the charge matched templating approach following the counter-ion mediated pathway. The samples thus obtained were characterized by small angle x-ray diffraction using Cuk(a) radiation, scanning electron microscopy and transmission electron microscopy, which indicated some satisfactory results. Passing a H-2-CH4 mixture over oxide spinels containing two transition elements as in Mg0.8MyMz'Al2O4 (M, M' = Fe, Co or Ni, y + z = 0.2) at 1070 degrees C produces small alloy nanoparticles which enable the formation of carbon nanotubes. Surface area measurements are found to be useful for assessing the yield and quality of the nanotubes. Good-quality single-walled nanotubes (SWNTs) have been obtained in high yields with the FeCo alloy nanoparticles, as evidenced by transmission electron microscope images and surface area measurements. The diameter of the SWNTs is in the 0.8-5 nm range, and the multiwalled nanotubes, found occasionally, possess very few graphite layers. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science B.V. All rights reserved.

Naturally occurring zircon sand was plasma spray coated on steel substrates previously coated with NiCrAlY bond coat. The coatings were characterized for their microstructure, chemical composition, thermal shock resistance, and the nature of structural phases present, The as-sprayed coatings consisted of t-ZrO2 (major phase), m-ZrO2, ZrSiO4 (minor phases), and amorphous SiO2. These coatings, when annealed at 1200 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s yielded a ZrSiO4 phase as a result of the reaction between ZrO2 and SiO2, Dramatic changes occurred in the characteristics of the coatings when a mixture of zircon sand and Y2O3 was plasma spray coated and annealed at 1400 degrees C/1.44 x 10(4) s, The t-ZrO2 phase was completely stabilized, and these coatings were found to have considerable potential for thermal barrier applications.

A novel series of vesicle-forming ion-paired amphiphiles, bis(hexadecyldimethylammonium)alkane dipalmitate (1a-1h), containing four chains were synthesized with two isolated headgroups. In each of these amphiphiles, the two headgroup charges are separated by a flexible polymethylene spacer chain -[(CH2)(m)]- of varying lengths (m) such that the length and the conformation of the spacer chain determine the intra-"monomer" headgroup separation. Transmission electron microscopy indicated that each of these forms bilayer membranes upon dispersion in aqueous media. The vesicular properties of these aggregates have been examined by differential scanning calorimetry and temperature-dependent fluorescence anisotropy measurements. Interestingly, their T-m values decreased with the increase in the m value. Thus while the apparent T-m of the lipid with m = 2 (1a) is 74.1 degrees C, the corresponding value observed for the lipid with m = 12 (1h) is 38.9 degrees C. The fluorescence anisotropy values (r) for 1b-1g were quite high (r similar to 0.3) compared to that of 1h (r similar to 0.23) at 20-30 degrees C in their gel states. On the other hand, the r value for vesicular 1b beyond melting was higher (0.1) compared to any of those for 1c-1h (similar to 0.04-0.06). X-ray diffraction of the cast films was performed to understand the nature and the thickness of these membrane organizations. The membrane widths ranged from 30 to 51 A as the m values varied. The entrapment of a small water-soluble solute, riboflavin, by the individual vesicular aggregates, and their sustenance: under an imposed transmembrane pH gradient have also been examined. These results show that all lipid vesicles entrap riboflavin and that generally the resistance to OH- permeation decreases with the increase in m value. Finally, all the above observations were comparatively analyzed, and on the basis of the calculated structures of these lipids, it was possible to conclude that membrane propel-ties can be modulated by spacer chain length variation of the ion-paired amphiphiles.

Methanol-tolerant Pt-Pd alloy catalysts supported on to carbon with varying Pt:Pd atomic ratios of 1:1, 2:1 and 3:1 are prepared by a novel wet-chemical method and characterized using powder XRD, XPS, FESEM, EDAX and TEM techniques. The optimum atomic weight ratio for Pt to Pd in the carbon-supported alloy catalyst as established by linear-sweep voltammetry (LSV) and cell polarization studies is found to be 2:1. A direct methanol fuel cell (DMFC) employing carbon-supported Pt-Pd (2:1) alloy (Pt-Pd/C) catalyst as the cathode catalyst delivers a peak-power density of 115 mW/cm(2) at 70 degrees C as compared to peak-power density of 60 mW/cm(2) obtained with the DMFC employing carbon-supported Pt (Pt/C) catalyst operating under similar conditions. In the literature, DMFCs operating with Pt-TiO2 (2:1)/C and Pt-Au (2:1)/C methanol-tolerant cathodes are reported to exhibit maximum ORR activity among the group of these methanol-tolerant cathodes with varying catalysts compositions. Accordingly, the present study also provides an effective route to design methanol-tolerant-oxygen-reduction catalysts for DMFCs. (C) 2011 The Electrochemical Society. Animals communicate in non-ideal and noisy conditions. The primary method they use to improve communication efficiency is sender-receiver matching: the receiver's sensory mechanism filters the impinging signal based on the expected signal. In the context of acoustic communication in crickets, such a match is made in the frequency domain. The males broadcast a mate attraction signal, the calling song, in a narrow frequency band centred on the carrier frequency (CF), and the females are most sensitive to sound close to this frequency. In tree crickets, however, the CF changes with temperature. The mechanisms used by female tree crickets to accommodate this change in CF were investigated at the behavioural and biomechanical level. At the behavioural level, female tree crickets were broadly tuned and responded equally to CFs produced within the naturally occurring range of temperatures (18 to 27 degrees C). To allow such a broad response, however, the transduction mechanisms that convert sound into mechanical and then neural signals must also have a broad response. The tympana of the female tree crickets exhibited a frequency response that was even broader than suggested by the behaviour. Their tympana vibrate with equal amplitude to frequencies spanning nearly an order of magnitude. Such a flat frequency response is unusual in biological systems and cannot be modelled as a simple mechanical system. This feature of the tree cricket auditory system not only has interesting implications for mate choice and species isolation but may also prove exciting for bio-mimetic applications such as the design of miniature low frequency microphones.

Several variants of hydrated sodium cadmium bisulfate, Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3) center dot 3H(2)O, Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O, and Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 4H(2)O have been synthesized, and their thermal properties followed by phase transitions have been invesigated. The formation of these phases depends on the stochiometry and the time taken for crystallization from water. Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O, which crystallizes in the trigonal system, space group P3c, is grown from the aqueous solution in about four weeks. The krohnkite type mineral Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) center dot 2H(2)O and the mineral astrakhanite, also known as blodite, Na(2)Cd (SO(4))(2)center dot 4H(2)O, crystallize concomittantly in about 24 weeks. Both these minerals belong to the monoclinic system(space group P2(1)/c). Na(2)Cd(2)(SO(4))(3)center dot 3H(2)O loses water completely when heated to 250 degrees C and transforms to a dehydrated phase (cubic system, space group I (4) over bar 3d) whose structure has been established using ab initio powder diffration techniques. Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2)center dot 2H(2)O transforms to alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (space group C2/c) on heating to 150 degrees C which is a known high ionic conductor and remains intact over prolonged periods of exposure to moisture (over six months). However, when alpha-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) is heated to 570 degrees C followed by sudden quenching in liquid nitrogen beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) (P2(1)/c) is formed. beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) takes up water from the atmosphere and gets converted completely to the krohnkite type mineral in about four weeks. Further, beta-Na(2)Cd(SO(4))(2) has a conductivity behavior comparable to the a-form up to 280 degrees C, the temperature required for the transformation of the beta- to alpha-form. These experiments demonstrate the possibility of utilizing the abundantly available mineral sources as precursors to design materials with special properties.

Rod-shaped V(2)O(5) was synthesized using the solution combustion technique, and the morphology of the compound was confirmed by TEM. Rods of an average diameter of 500 nm and length 3-6 times the diameter were obtained after the calcination of freshly prepared V(2)O(5) at 550 degrees C for 24 h. Pd metal nanoparticles of 20 nm size were deposited onto the rods using the wet impregnation technique. The as-synthesized, calcined and Pd impregnated V(2)O(5) were characterized by a wide variety of techniques including energy dispersive X-ray spectroscopy and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy. These compounds were tested for CO oxidation, adsorption, and photocatalytic degradation of dyes. The 1% Pd/V(2)O(5) showed a high activity for CO oxidation, the as-synthesized compound showed activity for the adsorption of cationic dyes, whereas the calcined V(2)O(5) sample showed high rates of photocatalytic degradation of dyes.
