The aim of this article is to provide an exploration how the work of two theorists with notably different stances could be used effectively to enhance critical research methods in relation to the history of child welfare social work. The design and implementation of child welfare policies, practices and discourses could considerably benefit from a more historically well grounded scholarship that enables actors to connect their present concerns with the broader historical dynamics of social regulation. The article reports on how the work of Michel Foucault and Dorothy E. Smith might be considered in parallel as two different perspectives to the same scene in time and place. The differences and similarities in their approaches are explored with an emphasis on concepts most relevant to researching child welfare archives including discourse, text, the subject and power-knowledge. The article concludes with a commentary on further development to take forward this methodological analysis.

Alpha polyesters such as poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) are biodegradable materials used in fracture fixation and they need to be assessed for problems associated with their degradation products. This study has compared cell responses to low molecular weight poly(L-lactide) particles, lactate monomer, poly(glycolide) particles and glycolic acid at cytotoxic and sub-cytotoxic concentrations. Murine macrophages were cultured in vitro and the release of lactate dehydrogenase (LDH), prostaglandin E-2 (PGE(2)) and interleukin-1 alpha IL-1alpha was measured following the addition of particles or monomer. Experiments revealed that both the poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) particles gave rise to dose dependent increases in LDH release and an increase in IL-1alpha and PGE(2) release. Comparisons of the poly(L-lactide) particles to the poly(glycolide) particles did not reveal any differences in their stimulation of LDH, IL-1alpha and PGE(2) release. The lactate and glycolate monomers did not increase PGE(2) or IL-1alpha release above control levels. There was no difference in biocompatibility between the poly(L-lactide) and poly(glycolide) degradation products both in particulate and monomeric form. (C) 2003 Kluwer Academic Publishers.
Linear and nonlinear dynamics of a dust bicrystal consisting of positive and negative dust particles
Resumo:
A dusty plasma crystalline configuration consisting of charged dust grains of alternating charge sign (.../+/-/+/-/+/...) and mass is considered. Both charge and mass of each dust species are taken to be constant. Considering the equations of longitudinal motion, a dispersion relation for linear longitudinal vibrations is derived from first principles and then analyzed. Two harmonic modes are obtained, namely, an acoustic mode and an inverse-dispersive optic-like one. The nonlinear aspects of acoustic longitudinal dust grain motion are addressed via a generalized Boussinesq (and, alternatively, a generalized Korteweg-de Vries) description. Evidence has accumulated that radiation induces a transmissible persistent destabilization of the genome, which mag. result in effects arising in the progeny of irradiated but surviving cells. An enhanced death rate among the progeny of cells surviving irradiation persists for many generations in the form of a reduced plating efficiency. Such delayed reproductive death is correlated with an increased occurrence of micronuclei. Since it has been suggested that radiation-induced chromosomal instability might depend on the radiation quality, we investigated the effects of alpha particles of different LET by looking at the frequency of delayed micronuclei in Chinese hamster V79 cells after cytochalasin-induced block of cell division, A dose-dependent increase in the frequency of micronuclei was found in cells assayed 1 week postirradiation or later. Also, there was a persistent increase in the frequency of dicentrics in surviving irradiated cells, Moreover, we found an increased micronucleus frequency in all of the 30 clones isolated from individual cells which had been irradiated with doses equivalent to either one, two or three alpha-particle traversals per cell nucleus, We conclude that the target for genomic instability in Chinese hamster cells must be larger than the cell nucleus. Charged-particle microbeams provide a unique opportunity to control precisely, the dose to individual cells and the localization of dose within the cell. The Gray Laboratory is now routinely operating a charged-particle microbeam capable of delivering targeted and counted particles to individual cells, at a dose-rate sufficient to permit a number of single-cell assays of radiation damage to be implemented. By this means, it is possible to study a number of important radiobiological processes in ways that cannot be achieved using conventional methods. This report describes the rationale, development and current capabilities of the Gray Laboratory microbeam.
