For 23 years, a combination of harsh repression and impressive socio-economic development in Tunisia ensured a certain level of stability of Ben Ali’s regime. However, on 14 January 2011, after several weeks of anti-government protests, the President fled the country, revealing the fallacy of the ‘Tunisian model’. While the departure of Ben Ali is an important step towards Tunisia’s political change, the fate of its democratic transition remains uncertain. In light of these changes and challenges, this paper first assesses the factors underpinning the former stability of Ben Ali’s regime; it then investigates the causes of its underlying unsustainability, culminating in the anti-government popular uprising in December 2010-January 2011 and the removal of Ben Ali; finally the paper evaluates the prospects for a real democratic transition in Tunisia, by highlighting the main political and socio-economic challenges that confront the country

To shift to a low-carbon economy, the EU has been encouraging the deployment of variable renewable energy sources (VRE). However, VRE lack of competitiveness and their technical specificities have substantially raised the cost of the transition. Economic evaluations show that VRE life-cycle costs of electricity generation are still today higher than those of conventional thermal power plants. Member States have consequently adopted dedicated policies to support them. In addition, Ueckerdt et al. (2013) show that when integrated to the power system, VRE induce supplementary not-accounted-for costs. This paper first exposes the rationale of EU renewables goals, the EU targets and current deployment. It then explains why the LCOE metric is not appropriate to compute VRE costs by describing integration costs, their magnitude and their implications. Finally, it analyses the consequences for the power system and policy options. The paper shows that the EU has greatly underestimated VRE direct and indirect costs and that policymakers have failed to take into account the burden caused by renewable energy and the return of State support policies. Indeed, induced market distortions have been shattering the whole power system and have undermined competition in the Internal Energy Market. EU policymakers can nonetheless take full account of this negative trend and reverse it by relying on competition rules, setting-up a framework to collect robust EU-wide data, redesigning the architecture of the electricity system and relying on EU regulators.

When a project is realized in a globalized environment, multiple stakeholders from different organizations work on the same system. Depending on the stakeholders and their organizations, various (possibly overlapping) concerns are raised in the development of the system. In this context a Domain Specific Language (DSL) supports the work of a group of stakeholders who are responsible for addressing a specific set of concerns. This chapter identifies the open challenges arising from the coordination of globalized domain-specific languages. We identify two types of coordination: technical coordination and social coordination. After presenting an overview of the current state of the art, we discuss first the open challenges arising from the composition of multiple DSLs, and then the open challenges associated to the collaboration in a globalized environment.

Background Image-guided systems have recently been introduced for their application in liver surgery. We aimed to identify and propose suitable indications for image-guided navigation systems in the domain of open oncologic liver surgery and, more specifically, in the setting of liver resection with and without microwave ablation. Method Retrospective analysis was conducted in patients undergoing liver resection with and without microwave ablation using an intraoperative image-guided stereotactic system during three stages of technological development (accuracy: 8.4 ± 4.4 mm in phase I and 8.4 ± 6.5 mm in phase II versus 4.5 ± 3.6 mm in phase III). It was evaluated, in which indications image-guided surgery was used according to the different stages of technical development. Results Between 2009 and 2013, 65 patients underwent image-guided surgical treatment, resection alone (n=38), ablation alone (n =11), or a combination thereof (n =16). With increasing accuracy of the system, image guidance was progressively used for atypical resections and combined microwave ablation and resection instead of formal liver resection (p<0.0001). Conclusion Clinical application of image guidance is feasible, while its efficacy is subject to accuracy. The concept of image guidance has been shown to be increasingly efficient for selected indications in liver surgery. While accuracy of available technology is increasing pertaining to technological advancements, more and more previously untreatable scenarios such as multiple small, bilobar lesions and so-called vanishing lesions come within reach.

The approach of estimating the current state of the overhead transmission lines is considering. The performance functions of the overhead transmission lines has been generated on the basis of experimental data and reports. Results of simulation of the approximation functions for overhead transmission lines are analyzed.

Most global ocean models are based on the assumption of a "steady state" ocean. Here, we investigate the validation of this hypothesis for the anthropized Mediterranean Sea. In order to do so, we calculated the mixing coefficients of the water masses detected in this sea via an optimum multiparameter analysis referred to as the MIX approach, using data from the BOUM (2008) and MedSeA (2013) cruises. The comparison of the mixing coefficients of each water mass, between 2008 and 2013, indicates that some of their proportions have significantly changed. Surface water mass proportions did not change significantly (Delta0.05-0.1), while intermediate and deep water mass mixing coefficients of both Eastern and Western basins were significantly modified (~Delata 0.35). This study clearly shows that the Mediterranean seawater is not in a "steady state".
