Objective: To explore the community integration of individuals who had suffered a Traumatic Brain Injury (TBI) and compare this to members of the general public. Design: Independent groups design. Setting: All participants were resident in Northern Ireland (NI). The brain injured participants were drawn from a Belfast-based social skills programme. Participants: Thirty participants, ten survivors of TBI, ten male and ten female controls from the general public. Main Outcome Measure: The Community Integration Measure (CIM) Results: Analysis of variance showed no significant differences between males and females or between males and brain injured individuals. A significant difference was found between females and brain injured individuals (F(1,18)=4.51, P=0.048). Conclusion: Females were more integrated into their communities than males, who were more integrated than brain injured individuals. It would appear that brain injury survivors are doubly disadvantaged. Their gender (mainly male), and the injury itself, conspires to reduce their integration with the wider community.

Objective: To compare sperm yields, apoptotic indices, and sperm DNA fragmentation from vasectomized men and fertile men undergoing vasectomy.

Design: Testicular biopsies from vasectomized (n 26) and fertile men (n 46), were milked to calculate sperm/gram and also formalin-?xed to determine the numbers of developing sperm and incidence and intensities of testicular FasL, Fas, Bax, and Bcl-2. Testicular sperm DNA fragmentation was assessed using the alkaline Comet assay.

Setting: An ART unit.

Patient(s): Twenty-six men attending for intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and 46 men attending for vasectomies.

Main Outcome Measure(s): Spermatocyte, spermatid and sperm yields, Fas, FasL, and Bax staining.

Result(s): Sperm yields from men vasectomized 5 years previously were markedly reduced compared to fertile men. Increased intensities of FasL and Bax staining were observed in the seminiferous tubules of vasectomy men. FasL positivity (percentage) also increased in Sertoli cells, and both FasL and Fas positivity (percentage) increased in primary spermatocytes and round spermatids of vasectomized men. Sperm DNA fragmentation, an end point marker of apoptosis, increased signi?cantly in vasectomized men compared to fertile men.

Conclusion(s): Reduced sperm yields after vasectomy are associated with increased apoptosis through the Fas–FasL and Bax pathways. Sperm after vasectomy displayed increased DNA fragmentation. (Fertil Steril 2007;87:834–41. ©2007 by American Society for Reproductive Medicine.)

Aims: Burkholderia cepacia complex (Bcc) isolates causing pulmonary infection in cystic fibrosis (CF) patients grow within an acidic environment in the lung. As exposure to acid pH has been shown to increase intracellular inorganic polyphosphate (polyP) formation in some bacteria, we investigated the inter-relationship between acidic pH and polyP accumulation in Bcc isolates.

After thermal treatment of a mixture of glucose and glycine for 2 h at 125 degreesC, about 60% of the starting material was converted into nonsoluble, black pigments, whereas 40% of the mixture was still water-soluble. Dialysis of the latter fraction revealed 30.4% of low molecular weight compounds (LMWs; MW <10 000 De) and 10.0% high-molecular weight products [HMWs; MW greater than or equal to 10000 Dal. The water-soluble Maillard reaction products (MRPs) were separated by gel permeation chromatography and ultrafiltration, revealing that 60% of the water-soluble products of the total carbohydrate/amino acid mixture had MWs <1 000 Da and consisted mainly of non-coloured reaction products. MRPs with MWs between 1000 and 30000 Da were Found in comparatively low yields (about 1.3%). In contrast, about 31.1% of the MRPs exhibited MWs > 30000 Da, amongst which 14.5% showed MWs > 100000 Da, thus indicating an oligomerisation of LMWs to melanoidins under roasting conditions. To investigate the physiological effects of these MRPs, xenobiotic enzyme activities were analysed in intestinal Caco-2 cells. For Phase-I NADPH-cytochrome c-reductase, the activity in the presence of the LMW and HMW fraction was decreased by 13% and 22%: respectively. Phase-II glutathione-S-transferase activity decreased by 15% and 18%, respectively, after incubation with the LMW and the HMW fractions. Considering the different yields, 30% and 10%, respectively, of the LMW and the HMW fractions, the total amount of the LMW fraction present in the glucose-glycine mixture is more active in modulating three enzyme activities than that of the HMW fraction.

Reduced-size polarized (ZmPolX) basis sets are developed for the second-row atoms X = Si, P, S, and Cl. The generation of these basis sets follows from a simple physical model of the polarization effect of the external electric field which leads to highly compact polarization functions to be added to the chosen initial basis set. The performance of the ZmPolX sets has been investigated in calculations of molecular dipole moments and polarizabilities. Only a small deterioration of the quality of the calculated molecular electric properties has been found. Simultaneously the size of the present reduced-size ZmPolX basis sets is about one-third smaller than that of the usual polarized (PolX) sets. This reduction considerably widens the range of applications of the ZmPolX sets in calculations of molecular dipole moments, dipole polarizabilities, and related properties.

The reaction mechanism and the rate-determining step (RDS) of the isomerisation of n-alkanes (C-4-C-6) over partially reduced MoO3 catalysts were studied through the effects of the addition of an alkene isomerisation catalyst (i.e. CoAlPO- 11). When an acidic CoAlPO- 11 sample was mechanically mixed with the MoO3, a decrease of the induction period and an increase of the steady-state conversion of n-butane to isobutane were observed. These data support previous assumptions that a bifunctional mechanism occurred over the partially reduced MoO3 (a complex nanoscale mixture of oxide-based phases) during n-butane isomerisation and that the RDS was the skeletal isomerisation of the linear butene intermediates. The only promotional effect of CoAlPO-11 on the activity of partially reduced MoO3 for C-5-C-6 alkane hydroisomerisation was a reduction of the induction period, as the RDS at steady-state conditions appeared to be dehydrogenation of the alkane in this case. In this paper, a reduced-complexity soft-interference-cancellation minimum mean-square-error.(SIC-MMSE) iterative equalization method for severe time-dispersive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) channels is proposed. To mitigate the severe time dispersiveness of the channel, a single carrier with cyclic prefix is employed, and the equalization is per-formed in the frequency domain. This simplifies the challenging problem of equalization in MIMO channels due to both the intersymbol interference (ISI) and the coantenna interference (CAI). The proposed iterative algorithm works in two stages. The first stage estimates the transmitted frequency-domain symbols using a low-complexity SIC-MMSE equalizer. The second stage converts the estimated frequency-domain symbols in the time domain and finds their means and variances to incorporate in the SIC-MMSE equalizer in the next iteration. Simulation results show the bit-/symbol-error-rate performance of the SIC-MMSE equalizer, with and without coding, for various modulation schemes.
