The simultaneous use of willow as a vegetation filter and an energy crop can respond both to the increasing energy demand and to the problem of the soil and water contamination. Its characteristics guarantee that the resources are used economically. As a vegetation filter, willow uptakes organic and inorganic contaminants. As a fast growing energy crop it meets the requirements of rural areas without the exploitation of existing forestry. The aim of the research was to gather knowledge on the thermal behaviour of willow, uptaking contaminants and then used as an energy crop. For this reason pyrolysis experiments were performed in two different scales. In analytical scale metal-contaminated wood was investigated and bench scale pyrolysis experiments were performed with nitrogen-enriched willow, originated from a wastewater treatment plant. Results of the pyrolysis showed that 51-81 % of the wastewater derived nitrogen of willow was captured in the char product. Char had low surface area (1.4 to 5.4 m2/g), low bulk density (0.15–0.18 g/cm3), high pH values (7.8–9.4) and high water-holding capacity (1.8 to 4.3 cm3/g) while the bioavailability of char nutrients was low. Links were also established between the pyrolysis temperature and the product properties for maximising the biochar provided benefits for soil applications. Results also showed that the metal binding capacity of wood varied from one metal ion to another, char yield increased and levoglucosan yield decreased in their presence. While char yield was mainly affected by the concentration of the metal ions, levoglucosan yield was more dependent on the type of the ionic species. Combustion experiments were also carried out with metal-enriched char. The burnout temperatures, estimated ignition indices and the conversion indicate that the metal ions type and not the amount were the determining factors during the combustion. Results presented in the Thesis provide better understanding on the thermal behaviour of nitrogen-enriched and metal contaminated biomass which is crucial to design effective pyrolysis units and combustors. These findings are relevant for pyrolysis experiments, where the goal is to yield char for energetic or soil applications.

Thermal spin transition (spin crossover), one of the most fascinating dynamic electronic structure phenomena occurring in coordination compounds of third row transition metal ions, mostly of iron(II), iron(III) and cobalt(II) with critical ligand field strengths competing with the spin pairing energy, has attracted increasing attention by many research groups. One of the reasons is the promising potential for practical applications. In this chapter we intend to cover essential recent work, primarily accomplished within the European research network on “Thermal and Optical Switching of Molecular Spin States (TOSS)”. New spin crossover compounds and their thermal spin transition behaviour, also under applied pressure, novel effects observed by irradiation and magnetic field, will be discussed. Progress in theoretical treatments of spin crossover phenomena, particularly cooperativity, will be briefly outlined. The chapter concludes with a summary of research highlights published by the partner laboratories of the TMR network TOSS.

Phagocytic cells produce a variety of oxidants as part of the immune defence, which react readily both with proteins and lipids, and could contribute to the oxidation of low density lipoprotein in atherosclerosis. We have investigated the oxidation of phospholipid vesicles by isolated human polymorphonuclear and mononuclear leukocytes, to provide a model of lipid oxidation in the absence of competing protein. PMA-stimulated cells were incubated with phospholipid vesicles contammg dipalmitoyl phosphatidylcholine (DPPC), palmitoyl-arachidonoyl phosphatidylcholine (PAPC), and stearoyl-oleoyl phosphatidylcholine (SOPC), before extraction of the lipids for analysis by HPLC coupled to electrospray mass spectrometry. In this system, oxidized phosphatidylcholines elute earlier than the native lipids owing to their decreased hydrophobicity, and can be identified according to their molecular mass. The formation of monohydroperoxides of P APC was observed routinely, together with low levels of hydroxides, but no chlorohydrin derivatives of P APC or SOPC were detected. However, the major oxidized product occurred at 828 m/z, and was identified as I-palmitoyl-2-(5,6-epoxyisoprostane E2)-sn-glycero-3-phosphocholine. These results show that phagocytes triggered by PMA cause oxidative damage to lipids predominantly by free radical mechanisms, and that electrophilic addition involving HOCl is not a major mechanism of attack. The contribution of myeloperoxidase and metal ions to the oxidation process is currently being investigated, and preliminary data suggest that myeloperoxidase-derived oxidants are responsible for the epoxyisoprostane phospholipid formation. The identification of an epoxyisoprostane phospholipid as the major product following phagocyte-induced phospholipid oxidation is novel and has implications for phagocyte involvement in atherogenesis.

d-Myo-inositol 1,2,6-triphosphate (alpha trinositol, AT) has been shown to attenuate muscle atrophy in a murine cachexia model through an increase in protein synthesis and a decrease in degradation. The mechanism of this effect has been investigated in murine myotubes using a range of catabolic stimuli, including proteolysis-inducing factor (PIF), angiotensin II (Ang II), lipopolysaccharide, and tumor necrosis factor-α/interferon-γ. At a concentration of 100 μM AT was found to attenuate both the induction of protein degradation and depression of protein synthesis in response to all stimuli. The effect on protein degradation was accompanied by attenuation of the increased expression and activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway. This suggests that AT inhibits a signalling step common to all four agents. This target has been shown to be activation (autophosphorylation) of the dsRNA-dependent protein kinase (PKR) and the subsequent phosphorylation of eukaryotic initiation factor 2 on the α-subunit, together with downstream signalling pathways leading to protein degradation. AT also inhibited activation of caspase-3/-8, which is thought to lead to activation of PKR. The mechanism of this effect may be related to the ability of AT to chelate divalent metal ions, since the attenuation of the increased activity of the ubiquitin-proteasome pathway by PIF and Ang II, as well as the depression of protein synthesis by PIF, were reversed by increasing concentrations of Zn2+. The ability of AT to attenuate muscle atrophy by a range of stimuli suggests that it may be effective in several catabolic conditions. © 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

Luminescent carbon dots (L-CDs) with high quantum yield value (44.7%) and controllable emission wavelengths were prepared via a facile hydrothermal method. Importantly, the surface states of the materials could be engineered so that their photoluminescence was either excitation-dependent or distinctly independent. This was achieved by changing the density of amino-groups on the L-CD surface. The above materials were successfully used to prepare multicolor L-CDs/polymer composites, which exhibited blue, green, and even white luminescence. In addition, the excellent excitation-independent luminescence of L-CDs prepared at low temperature was tested for detecting various metal ions. As an example, the detection limit of toxic Be2+ ions, tested for the first time, was as low as μM.

It is projected that by 2020, there will be 138 million Americans over 45, the age at which the increased incidence of heart diseases is documented. Many will require stents. This multi-billion dollar industry, with over 2 million patients worldwide, 15% of whom use Nitinol stents have experienced a decline in sales recently, due in part to thrombosis. It is a sudden blood clot that forms inside stents. As a result, the Food and Drug Administration and American Heart Association are calling for a new generation of stents, new designs and different alloys that are more adaptable to the arteries. The future of Nitinol therefore depends on a better understanding of the mechanisms by which Nitinol surfaces can be rendered stable and inert. In this investigation, binary and ternary Nitinol alloys were prepared and subjected to various surface treatments such as electropolishing (EP), magnetoelectropolishing (MEP) and water boiling & passivation (W&P). In vitro corrosion tests were conducted on Nitinol alloys in accordance with ASTM F 2129-08. The metal ions released into the electrolyte during corrosion tests were measured by Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectroscopy (ICP-MS). Biocompatibility was assessed by observing the growth of human umbilical vein endothelial cells (HUVEC) on the surface of Nitinol alloys. Static and dynamic immersion tests were performed by immersing the Nitinol alloys in cell culture media and measuring the amount of metal ions released in solution. Sulforhodamine B (SRB) assays were performed to elucidate the effect of metal ions on the growth of HUVEC cells. The surfaces of the alloys were studied using Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy (XPS) respectively. Finally, wettability and surface energy were measured by Contact Angle Meter, whereas surface roughness was measured by Atomic Force Microscopy (AFM). All the surface treated alloys exhibited high resistance to corrosion when compared with untreated alloys. SRB assays revealed that Ni and Cu ions exhibited greater toxicity than Cr, Ta and Ti ions on HUVEC cells. EP and MEP alloys possessed relatively smooth surfaces and some were composed of nickel oxides instead of elemental nickel as determined by XPS. MEP exhibited lowest surface energy and lowest surface roughness.

Owing to an increased risk of aging population and a higher incidence of coronary artery disease (CAD), there is a need for more reliable and safer treatments. Numerous varieties of durable polymer-coated drug eluting stents (DES) are available in the market in order to mitigate in-stent restenosis. This work aimed to promote the synthesis, characterization and propose a plausible molecular structure for coordination compounds involving furosemide (4-Chloro-2-(2- furylmethylamino)-5-sulfamoyl-benzoic acid) with the metal ions Ni+2, Zn+2 and Co+2. The compounds were obtained in methanoic medium by evaporation of the solvent after the synthesis procedure. For characterization of coordination compounds determining the levels of metals by EDTA complexometry, infrared spectroscopy (FTIR), solubility of compounds in various solvents, thermogravimetry (TG), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), differential thermal analysis were made (DTA), determination of the carbon , hydrogen and nitrogen (CHN). The results of infrared spectroscopy in the region suggest that the organic ligand is coordinated in a bidentate fashion to the metal ions, the metal center interactions to occur by the coordination of the nitrogen atom of the amino group and the oxygen atom of the carboxylic acid of the structure of furosemide. With the results of the levels of metal, elemental analysis (CHN) and thermal analysis has been possible to propose the structure of the ligand. The values of the molar conductivity of the complex in acetonitrile behavior suggest the non acetonitrile electrolyte solution. With the solubility tests it was found that the compounds have high solubility in methanol and acetonitrile, as are partially insoluble in water. From the results of thermal analysis (TG, DSC, DTA), it was possible to obtain the thermal behavior of the compounds as stages of dehydration, thermal stability, decomposition and the energies involved.

Transition metals such as iron and copper are valued in biology for their redox activities because they are able to access various oxidation states. However, these transition metals are also implicated in a number of human disease states and play a role in bacterial infections. The ability to manipulate and monitor metal ions has vast implications on the fields of biology and human health. As such, the research described here covers two related goals: to manipulate metals in specific biological circumstances and to visualize this disturbance in cellular metal homeostasis.

Antibiotic resistance necessitates the development of drugs that exploit new mechanisms of action such as the disruption of metal homeostasis. In order to manipulate metals at the site of bacterial infection, two prochelators were developed around a β-lactam core such that the active chelator is released in the presence of bacteria that produce the resistance-causing β-lactamase enzyme. Both prochelators display enhanced activity toward resistant bacteria compared to clinical antibiotics.

Fluorescent sensors are a powerful tool for detecting small concentrations of biological analytes. Two analogs of a ratiometric fluorescent sensor were designed and synthesized to monitor cellular concentrations of copper and iron. These sensors were found to operate as designed in vitro; however the fluorescence intensity necessary for quantification of cellular metal pools has not yet been achieved.

Attempts to classify pelagic sediments have been based either on appearance and composition, or on the ultimate origin of the components. In particular it appears feasible to distinguish minerals which crystallized in sea-water from those which formed in magmas, in hydrothermal solution, or by weathering under acidic conditions. It is the case of iron and manganese oxide mineral aggregates which constitute one of the major types of rock encountered on the ocean floor; according to Menard (unpublished) about 10% of the pelagic area of the Pacific is covered by such nodules. The nodules consist of intimately intergrown crystallites of different minerals among those identified, besides detrital minerals and organic matter, are opal, goethite, rutile, anatase, barite, nontronite, and at least three manganese oxide minerals of major importance. Arrhenius and Korkisch (1959) have attempted to separate from each other the different minerals constituting the nodules, in order to establish the details of their structure and the localization of the heavy metal ions. The results demonstrate (Table II) that copper and nickel are concentrated in the manganese oxide phases concentrated in the reducible fraction. Cobalt, part of the nickel and most of the chromium are distributed between these and the acid-soluble group of the non-manganese minerals, dominated by goethite and disordered FeOOH.

This chapter discusses the formation and distribution of some metals in ocean-floor manganese nodules in the light of the observed data in the literature and thermodynamic and kinetic considerations of the oxidation of metal ions in the oceanic environment. There are, in general, two major schools of thought on the mechanism of incorporation of the minor elements such as nickel, copper, and cobalt with the major elements such as manganese and iron. One is the lattice substitution mechanism and the other the adsorption mechanism. If the mechanism is lattice substitution, extraction of the metal ions is not possible unless the lattice of the major elements is first broken and exchanged with other ions from the bulk solution. Consequently, the leaching behavior of minor elements should display a very close relationship with that of major elements.

Thermoelectric materials are revisited for various applications including power generation. The direct conversion of temperature differences into electric voltage and vice versa is known as thermoelectric effect. Possible applications of thermoelectric materials are in eco-friendly refrigeration, electric power generation from waste heat, infrared sensors, temperature controlled-seats and portable picnic coolers. Thermoelectric materials are also extensively researched upon as an alternative to compression based refrigeration. This utilizes the principle of Peltier cooling. The performance characteristic of a thermoelectric material, termed as figure of merit (ZT) is a function of several transport coefficients such as electrical conductivity (σ), thermal conductivity (κ) and Seebeck coefficient of the material (S). ZT is expressed asκσTZTS2=, where T is the temperature in degree absolute. A large value of Seebeck coefficient, high electrical conductivity and low thermal conductivity are necessary to realize a high performance thermoelectric material. The best known thermoelectric materials are phonon-glass electron – crystal (PGEC) system where the phonons are scattered within the unit cell by the rattling structure and electrons are scattered less as in crystals to obtain a high electrical conductivity. A survey of literature reveals that correlated semiconductors and Kondo insulators containing rare earth or transition metal ions are found to be potential thermoelectric materials. The structural magnetic and charge transport properties in manganese oxides having the general formula of RE1−xAExMnO3 (RE = rare earth, AE= Ca, Sr, Ba) are solely determined by the mixed valence (3+/4+) state of Mn ions. In strongly correlated electron systems, magnetism and charge transport properties are strongly correlated. Within the area of strongly correlated electron systems the study of manganese oxides, widely known as manganites exhibit unique magneto electric transport properties, is an active area of research.Strongly correlated systems like perovskite manganites, characterized by their narrow localized band and hoping conduction, were found to be good candidates for thermoelectric applications. Manganites represent a highly correlated electron system and exhibit a variety of phenomena such as charge, orbital and magnetic ordering, colossal magneto resistance and Jahn-Teller effect. The strong inter-dependence between the magnetic order parameters and the transport coefficients in manganites has generated much research interest in the thermoelectric properties of manganites. Here, large thermal motion or rattling of rare earth atoms with localized magnetic moments is believed to be responsible for low thermal conductivity of these compounds. The 4f levels in these compounds, lying near the Fermi energy, create large density of states at the Fermi level and hence they are likely to exhibit a fairly large value of Seebeck coefficient.
