In this study the effects of spray-drying conditions on the retention of enzyme activity of lipase produced by the endophytic fungus Cercospora kikuchii have been investigated. Drying runs were carried out in a bench-top spray dryer with a concurrent flow regime. The influence of the variables inlet temperature of drying gas, Tgi (86.4 to 153.6 degrees C); mass flow rate of the enzymatic extract fed to the dryer, Ws (2.63 to 9.36g/min); and concentration of the drying adjuvant added to the extract, ADJ (1.95 to 12.05%), on the spray-drying performance and on product quality was evaluated through experimental planning and regression analysis. The use of maltodextrin, as a stabilizing agent, slightly improved the retention of enzyme activity compared to -cyclodextrin. Statistical optimization of the experimental results allowed the determination of the processing conditions that maximized the retention of the enzymatic activity (RAE), namely, concentration of drying adjuvants of 12.05%, inlet temperature of the drying gas of 153.6 degrees C, and flow rate of the enzymatic extract fed to the dryer of 9.36g/min for the both drying adjuvants investigated.

Inclusion complexes of Lippia sidoides essential oil and beta-cyclodextrin were obtained by slurry method and its solid powdered form was prepared using spray drying. The influence of the spray drying, as well as the different essential oil:beta-cyclodextrin ratio on the characteristics of the final product was investigated. With regard to the total oil retention 1:10 mass/mass ratio as optimal was found between the essential oil and beta-cyclodextrin. Thermoanalytical techniques (TG, EGD, TG-MS) were used to support the formation of inclusion complex and to examine their physicochemical properties after accelerated storage conditions. It may be assumed that the thermal properties of the complexes were influenced not only by the different essential oil/beta-cyclodextrin ratio but also by the storage conditions. In the aspect of their thermal stabilities, complex prepared with 1:10 m/m ratio (essential oil: beta-cyclodextrin) was the most stable one.

The aim of this work was to investigate doxorubicin (DOX) percutaneous absorption and retention in the skin following iontophoresis. The convective flow contribution to the overall electrotransport of DOX was also elucidated for a non-ionic hyd roxyethylcellulose gel and a cationic chitosan gel. Moreover, the cytotoxicity of DOX and its formulations, with and without low electrical current, was verified. It was observed that iontophoresis of DOX significantly increased the skin permeation and retention of the drug. In addition, the electroosmotic flow was dramatically reduced when DOX was added to the non-ionic gel, thereby indicating that the drug interacted with negative charges in the skin. Interestingly, electroosmosis was also significantly reduced when the iontophoresis was performed in the presence of the chitosan gel, but in the absence of DOX. Consequently, the transport of an electroosmotic marker from this gel almost disappeared when the positively charged drug was added to the cationic gel. These results indicated that chitosan appeared to interact with negative charges in the skin. Hence, this carrier not only reduced electroosmotic flow, but also released DOX from ionic interactions with these sites and improved its diffusion to deeper skin layers. The application of the low electrical current directly to melanoma cells increased DOX cytotoxicity by nearly three-fold, which was probably due to membrane permeation. (c) 2008 Elsevier B.V. Specimens of the red alga Bostrychia tenella J Agardh (Rhodomelaceae, Ceramiales) were collected from the Sao Paulo coast and submitted to loom temperature solvent extraction The resulting extract was fractionated by partitioning with organic solvent The n-hexane (BT-H) and dichloromethane (BT-D) fractions showed antiprotozoal potential in biological tests with Trypanosoma cruzi and Leishmania amazonensis and presented high activity in an antifungal assay with the phytopathogenic fungi Cladosporium cladosporioides and Cladosporium sphaerospermum Chromatography methods were used to generate subfractions from BT-H (H01 to H11) and from BT-D (D01 to 019) The subtractions were analyzed by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (GC/MS). and the substances were identified by retention index (Kovats) and by comparison to databases of commercial mass spectra The volatile compounds found in marine algae were identified as fatty acids, low molecular mass hydrocarbons, esters and steroids, some of these have been previously described in the literature based on other biological activities Moreover, uncommon substances. such as neophytadiene were also identified In a trypanocidal assay, fractions BT-H and BT-D showed IC(50) values of 168 and 19 1 mu g/mL. respectively, and were mote active than the gentian violet standard (31 mu g/ml.); subfractions H02. H03, D01 and D02 were active against L amasonensis, exhibiting IC(50) values of 1 S. 2 7, 4 4. and 4 3 mu g/mL., respectively (standard amphotericin B IC(50) = 13 mu g/mL.) This pilot project at Cotton Tree, Maroochydore, on two adjacent, linear parcels of land has one of the properties privately owned while the other is owned by the public housing authority. Both owners commissioned Lindsay and Kerry Clare to design housing for their separate needs which enabled the two projects to be governed by a single planning and design strategy. This entailed the realignment of the dividing boundary to form two approximately square blocks which made possible the retention of an important stand of mature paperbark trees and gave each block a more useful street frontage. The scheme provides seven two-bedroom units and one single-bedroom unit as the private component, with six single-bedroom units, three two-bedroom units and two three-bedroom units forming the public housing. The dwellings are deployed as an interlaced mat of freestanding blocks, car courts, courtyard gardens, patios and decks. The key distinction between the public and private parts of the scheme is the pooling of the car parking spaces in the public housing to create a shared courtyard. The housing climbs to three storeys on its southern edge and falls to a single storey on the north-western corner. This enables all units and the principal private outdoor spaces to have a northern orientation. The interiors of both the public and private units are skilfully arranged to take full advantage of views, light and breeze.

Welcome to the 2002 Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies Unit Annual Report. This report is a brief summary of Unit activities during the 2002 calendar year. The Unit provides personal and academic support for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students and specifically aims to increase the recruitment, retention, academic performance and graduation rates of Indigenous students. The Unit also administers schemes to help Indigenous students gain access to, and receive support in, tertiary studies such as the Alternative Entry scheme and the federally funded Aboriginal Tutorial Assistance Scheme (ATAS). The Unit is also the focus for teaching and research in Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Studies at the University of Queensland.
