Convectively coupled Kelvin waves over the South American continent are examined through the use of temporal and spatial filtering of reanalysis, satellite, and gridded rainfall data. They are most prominent from November to April, the season analyzed herein. The following two types of events are isolated: those that result from preexisting Kelvin waves over the eastern Pacific Ocean propagating into the continent, and those that apparently originate over Amazonia, forced by disturbances propagating equatorward from central and southern South America. The events with precursors in the Pacific are mainly upper-level disturbances, with almost no signal at the surface. Those events with precursors over South America, on the other hand, originate as upper-level synoptic wave trains that pass over the continent and resemble the ""cold surges`` documented by Garreaud and Wallace. As the wave train propagates over the Andes, it induces a southerly low-level wind that advects cold air to the north. Precipitation associated with a cold front reaches the equator a few days later and subsequently propagates eastward with the characteristics of a Kelvin wave. The structures of those waves originating over the Pacific are quite similar to those originating over South America as they propagate to eastern South America and into the Atlantic. South America Kelvin waves that originate over neither the Pacific nor the midlatitudes of South America can also be identified. In a composite sense, these form over the eastern slope of the Andes Mountains, close to the equator. There are also cases of cold surges that reach the equator yet do not form Kelvin waves. The interannual variability of the Pacific-originating events is related to sea surface temperatures in the central-eastern Pacific Ocean. When equatorial oceanic conditions are warm, there tends to be an increase in the number of disturbances that reach South America from the Pacific.

Tribe Pogonieae (Orchidaceae), as Currently known, comprises live genera distributed from South to North America and Eastern Asia. Phylogenetic inferences within Cleistes and among genera of tribe Pogonieae were made based oil nrDNA (ITS) and cpDNA (trnL-F, rps16, rbcL, and psaB) Sequence data and maximum parsimony. Eighteen species of Cleistes, members of all other genera of Pogonieae, and outgroups were sampled. Analyses based oil individual DNA regions provided similar topologies. All evidence indicates that Cleistes is paraphyletic. The North American C. divaricata and C bifaria are more closely related to the temperate genera Isotria and Pogonia than to their Central and South American congeners, the latter Constituting a monophyletic group characterized by the production of nectar as reward, tuberous roots, and their distribution in Central and South America. The Amazonian Duckeella is sister to the remainder of Pogonieae. Taxonomic and biogeographic implications are discussed, and morphological synapomorphies are given For clades obtained in the inferred molecular phylogeny. [EN]The Cape Verde Frontal Zone separates North and South Atlantic Central Waters in the eastern North Atlantic Subtropical Gyre. CTD-O2 and shipboard ADCP data from three hydrographic sections carried out in September 2003 are used to study the structure of the front. Results show the relation between spatial variations of water masses and currents, demonstrating the importance of advection in the distribution of water masses. Diapycnal diffusivities due to double diffusion and vertical shear instabilities are also estimated. Existence of competition between the two processes through the water column is shown. Depth-averaged diffusivities suggest that salt fingering dominates diapycnal mixing, except areas of purest South Atlantic Central Water. Here, double diffusion processes are weak and, consequently, shear of the flow is the main process. Results also show that strong mixing induced by vertical shear is associated with a large intrusion found near the front.

The provenance of ice-rafted debris (IRD) deposited in the North Atlantic before, during, and after Heinrich event 2 has been determined through measuring the lead isotopic composition of single feldspar grains and multiple-grain composites from the larger than 150-µm size fraction, from cores from the eastern and western North Atlantic and from the Labrador Sea. Single-grain analyses are used to identify the specific continental sources of the IRD, whereas composite samples are used to assess the relative IRD contributions from different sources. All single grains from Heinrich layer 2 (H 2) as well as H 2 composites plot along a correlation line on a 207Pb/204Pb versus 206Pb/204Pb diagram characteristic of the Churchill province of the Canadian shield. This is yet another strong piece of evidence that this Heinrich event was dominated by a massive iceberg discharge of the Laurentide ice sheet lobe located over Hudson Bay. In contrast, single grains from the ambient glacial sediment (above and below H 2) have multiple sources: many of them also lie along the correlation line with H 2 grains, but many others have Pb signatures consistent with derivation from the Grenville province and the Appalachian range in North America and possibly from Scandinavia and Greenland. Composites from the ambient sediment generally lie well to the right of the H 2 reference line in agreement with the results of the single-grain analyses. The evidence provided by lead isotopes regarding the dominant role played by the Hudson Bay lobe of the Laurentide ice sheet in the development of the Heinrich events lends support to the binge/purge model advanced by MacAyeal [1993a, b] that invokes trapping of geothermal heat by the base of the icecap and subsequent basal melting as the mechanism that triggered the Heinrich events.

In order to study the modern sea surface characteristics of the sub-polar North Pacific and the Bering Sea, i.e. sea surface temperature (SST) and sea ice cover, surface sediments recovered during the RV Sonne Expedition 202 in 2009 were analysed. To distinguish between marine and terrestrial organic carbon, hydrogen index values, long chain n-alkanes and specific sterols have been determined. The results show that in the Bering Sea, especially on the sea slope, the organic carbon source is mainly caused by high primary production. In the North Pacific, on the other hand, the organic material originates predominantly from terrestrial higher plants, probably related to dust input from Asia. SST has been reconstructed using the modified alkenone unsaturation index. Calibration from Müller et al. (1998, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(98)00097-0) offers the most reliable estimate of mean annual temperature in the central North Pacific but does not correlate with mean annual temperature throughout the study area. In the eastern North Pacific and the Bering Sea, the Sikes et al. (1997, doi:10.1016/S0016-7037(97)00017-3) calibration seems to be more accurate and matches summer SST. The distribution of the novel sea ice proxy IP25 (highly branched C25 isoprenoid alkene) in surface sediments is in accord with the modern spring sea ice edge and shows the potential of this proxy to track past variation in sea ice cover in the study area.

The distribution of 210Pb and 210 Po on dissolved (< 0.4 micron) and particulate (> 0.4 micron) phases has been measured at ten stations occupied during cruise 32 of F.S. "Meteor" in the tropical and eastern North Atlantic. Both radionuclides occur principally in the dissolved phase. Unsupported 210Pb activities, maintained by flux from the atmosphere, are present in the surface mixed layer and penetrate into the thermocline to depths of about 500 m. Dissolved 210Po is ordinarily present in the mixed layer at less than equilibrium concentrations, suggesting rapid biological removal of this nuclide. Particulate matter is enriched in 210Po, with 210Po/210Pb activity ratios greater than 1.0, similar to those reported for phytoplankton. At depths of 100-300 m, 210Po maxima occur, and unsupported 210Po is frequently present, an observation that suggests rapid re-cycling within the thermocline. Comparison of the 210Pb distributions with those reported for 226Ra at nearby GEOSECS stations confirms the widespread existence of a 210Pb/226Ra disequilibrium in the deep sea. Close to the bottom, profiles of 210Pb and 226Ra usually diverge, and 210Pb concentrations frequently decrease with depth, suggesting a sink 210 Pb near the seafloor. Particulate 210Pb concentrations ordinarily show little systematic variation with depth. At depths greater than 1000 m, dissolved 210Po activities are, on the average, less than those of 210Pb by 12%. A corresponding 210 Po enrichment in the particulate phase is found.

Calcareous nannoplankton analyses on late quaternary sediments from the eastern North Atlantic ODP Site 980 (55°29'N, 14°42'W) provide detailed insight into palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatic changes that occurred throughout the Termination II and the adjacent interglacial of the Marine Isotope Stage (MIS) 5. This study presents the development of the coccolith assemblage throughout the interglacial MIS 5 towards the beginning of the glacial MIS 4 in the vicinity of the Rockall Plateau and investigates and characterises the impact of climatic and environmental variations on the coccolith assemblage distribution between 135 and 65 ky. In general, the coccolith assemblage is dominated by Gephyrocapsa muellerae and Emiliania huxleyi, whilst significant changes in palaeoceanographic and palaeoclimatic conditions are mainly shown by variations of subordinate species. A drastic increase in coccolith accumulation rates and a change from a less to a higher diverse species assemblage indicate a rapid increase in surface water temperatures during the onset of MIS 5 from c. 127.5 ky on. Highest coccolith numbers, high numbers of taxa and a large diversity indicate highest coccolithophore primary productivity and peak interglacial conditions during MIS 5.5, which are due to the high influence of relatively warm surface water to this region. Coccolith numbers peak again around 120 ky and decline afterwards but stay above glacial levels. The two cooling events of MIS 5.4 and 5.2 interrupt the generally warm conditions and are indicated by lowered coccolith numbers, a drop of thermophile species and a reduction of the species diversity. Decreasing coccolith numbers and a slightly reduced diversity indicate that environmental conditions deteriorated towards the onset of MIS 4. The analysis of the coccolith assemblage reveals that not only the stadial events MIS 5.4 and 5.2 are characterised by colder conditions, but furthermore confirms the upcoming notion that MIS 5.5 was terminated by a slight short-term cooling of the surface water which occurred around 124 ky.

Dolomite-rich layers of distinct pinkish colour are used as lithostratigraphic markers in the Amerasian Basin of the Arctic Ocean. However, origin of dolomite present in these sediment units has not been investigated in detail. In this study, lead (Pb) and neodymium (Nd) isotope composition of detrital clay-size fraction from different lithofacies was investigated in core PS72/340-5 recovered at the eastern flank of the Mendeleev Ridge. Prior to the geochemical analyses, grain-size distribution in sediments was analyzed in order to minimize the grain-size effect on the provenance signature. For provenance discrimination, results of isotope measurements were compared with marine surface sediment data and values for the circum-Arctic subaerial provinces. Late Quaternary sediment supply variability in core PS72/340-5 was analysed using the mixing model constrained by two tracers: 207Pb/206Pb and eNd. Variations of sediment isotopic composition are inferred to be due to mixing of volcanic and plutonic components. Usage of Pb isotopic ratios alone does not allow distinction between the volcanic and plutonic sources. Results confirm that, in the frame of the existing age model, over the last 200 ka dolomite-rich pink layers at the southern Mendeleev Ridge were deposited during events associated with intensified iceberg transport from North America. In general, however, late Quaternary sedimentation was mostly controlled by terrigenous input from the Chukchi and East Siberian Seas whereas sediment supply from the Laptev Sea area remained less important and relatively constant at the studied location.
