The cell block technique is widely used and recognized by health professionals, but lacks in information regarding the specific contribution of this method to veterinary medicine. The cytology of bone marrow and buffy coat (cellular portion of the hole blood) are widely used in the diagnosis of neoplastic and nonneoplastic diseases, and also for the detection of infectious agents. Although the importance of these samples is widely recognized, there is no information about the use of buffy coat and bone marrow samples in the cell block procedure among the research material used for this paper. This work aims for the cell block standardization for canine buffy coat and bone marrow samples. We collected 110 buffy coat samples and 44 bone marrow samples for the cell block preparation, and 68.2% of buffy coat and bone marrow proved to be viable at the end of the procedure. The 95% ethanol fixatives along with the 20 minute processing steps (absolute ethanol, xilol and paraffin, 3 of each) were crucial for the quality of the material both in microtomy and optical microscopy. Mechanical separation of the buffy coat proved to be easy and cheap and was used to compose the cell block technique. In this research we emphasized the importance of cell block standardization in order to develop and easy, inexpensive and reproducible method, regardless of any of the professionals' limitations.

We have compared the results of the external irrigation technique with those of a double irrigation technique with continuous intermittent movement. Maximum thermal measurements were made in the cortical part of 10 samples of bovine ribs during osteotomy to simulate the preparation of a surgical bed for the installation of dental implants at a depth of 10 mm Twenty specimens were drilled for each group: external irrigation and continuous movement (control group 1, CG1); external irrigation and intermittent movement (control group 2, CG2); double irrigation and continuous movement (test group 1, TG1); and double irrigation and intermittent movement (test group 2, TG2). The double irrigation technique gave significantly better results regardless of the drilling movement used. Thermal increases between samples was 19.2% in group CG1, 10.4% in CG2, 5.4% in TG1, and 3.4% in TG2. The double irrigation technique produced a significantly smaller increase in temperature in the cortical bone during both types of drilling (p = 0.001), which illustrated its greater efficiency compared with that of the external irrigation technique. Considering that alcohol has been identified, in the literature, as an evident risk factor for osteoporosis development, inducing loss of bone mass, the aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of the alcohol on the femur of male and female rats. For this purpose, 35 male and 35 female rats, divided into seven groups of five animals per genera were included. The groups were: control group that received food and water as much as they wished; alcohol group in the concentrations of 10, 20 and 30% and the isocalorie: groups corresponding to the concentration of alcohol. After 8 weeks, the animals were sacrificed and evaluated regarding to the body weight and nutritional conditions. Unilateral femurs were removed and analyzed in relation to the length, width, and thickness of the bone cortical, trabeculae percentage and optical density. Data obtained were analyzed by ANOVA (Tukey; p<0.05). Regarding to the weight, loss of weight was observed in the animals of the group alcohol 20% among females and 30% among the males. In relation to the nutritional conditions, the females with the dosages of 10, 20 and 30% of alcohol swallowed a mean of 25, 39 and 53% of Kcall and the males 22, 36 and 45 Kcal Jday coming from the alcohol. Alcohol reduced the length of the femur only in the group MG6. Mesio-distal width was higher in the group FG6 although the antero-posterior width was not modified. The cortical thickness among males and females was not altered however the percentage of trabeculae bone was reduced among females alcohol 30% and among males with the three alcoholic concentrations. Optical density was reduced in the concentration of 30% among the males and females. Under the experimental conditions, it could be concluded that the effect of alcohol was more evident among the males and in the trabeculae bone, and that the alcoholic concentration of 30% was the most harmful for the bone tissue, ....
