Kinship, ritual kinship and political milieus in an alpine Valley in 19th century

In my paper I will present some results about ritual kinship and political mobilization of popular groups in an alpine Valley: the Val de Bagnes, in the Swiss canton of Valais. There are two major reasons to choose the Val de Bagnes for our inquiry about social networks: the existence of sharp political and social conflicts during the 18th and the 19th century and the availability of almost systematic genealogical data between 1700 and 1900. The starting point of my research focuses on this question: what role did kinship and ritual kinship play in the political mobilization of popular groups and in the organization of competing factions? This question allows us to shed light on some other uses and meanings of ritual kinship in the local society. Was ritual kinship a significant instrument for economic cooperation? Or was it a channel for patronage or for privileged social contacts? The analysis highlights the importance of kinship and godparentage for the building of homogeneous social and political networks. If we consider transactions between individuals, the analysis of 19th century Val de Bagnes gives the impression of quite open networks. Men and women tried to diversify their relations in order to avoid strong dependency from powerful patrons. Nevertheless, when we consider the family networks, we can notice that most relations took place in a structured social space or a specific "milieu", were intense contacts enhanced trust, although political allegiances and social choices were not fully predictable on the basis of such preferential patterns. In a politically conflictual society, like 19th century Bagnes, ritual kinship interacted with kinship solidarities and ideological factors shaping dense social networks mostly based on a common political orientation. Such milieus sustained the building of political factions, which show surprising stability over time. In this sense, milieus are important factors to understand political and religious polarization in 19th century Switzerland.

Making a Modern Highway: Transformation of Iowa Roadways in the Mid-Twentieth Century, 2014

The booklet tells the history of the construction of the Iowa Highway 376 Bridge within the context of significant modernization and expansion of the highway system in Iowa in the 1950s. Curvy, narrow highways were widened and straightened and narrow iron truss bridges were replaced with more modern concrete and steel structures, changing the landscape of rural Iowa. Bridge engineer Herbert A Arthur, who designed the Iowa Highway 376 Bridge, was a prolific bridge engineer in the 1950s. This booklet serves to inform the public of this significant aspect of Iowa transportation history.

La Comunitat de Preveres de Sallent durant la segona meitat del segle XVIII

L’objectiu d’aquest article és presentar dues situacions diferents que es van produir a la Comunitat de Preveres de Sallent durant la segona meitat del segle XVIII i que permeten analitzar alguns aspectes del funcionament de les comunitats de preveres en general. En primer lloc, un conflicte intern produït per la pèrdua de rendes després de la reducció de 1750. En segon lloc, els problemes que es van generar entre la Comunitat i la població a causa d’unes pràctiques indignes d’alguns dels membres de la Comunitat. Finalment, els llevadors de comptes de March Sanmartí, que va ser col·lector entre 1775 i 1778, a partir dels quals analitzem les diferents procedències dels ingressos. L’elecció dels temes ha estat donada per la mateixa documentació. La parròquia de Sallent va perdre l’arxiu durant la Guerra Civil i, per tant, hem utilitzat el fons de l’Arxiu Episcopal de Vic i el fons de l’arxiu del mas Sanmartí, d’on era originari el col·lector.

Students today have a different way of relating to information due to the new media channels that have arisen in the last decades. These have changed the way high-school and undergraduate students learn and they have altered the manner by which they perceive the world. Today’s Education Theory must take this fact into account in order to enhance the student’s learning process. The objective of this project is to give an example of how this enhancement may be achieved. First, it will give a brief overview of the relation between today’s young generations and the different channels of information; secondly, it will analyze the cognitive, psychological and educational theories that explain how the human brain learns and the important value that nonverbal information has for the memory system; afterwards, it will focus on this nonverbal information, looking at the possible effects that it may have on human memory and learning; finally, it will give an example of the practical implementation of this theory through the presentation of three animated instructional videos that have been created with the specific aim of enhancing the young generation’s understanding of some complex subjects of the Liberal Arts.

La importància econòmica d'una minoria ètnica: el cas dels xuetes, segles XVI-XVIII

L’estudi de col·lectius minoritaris esdevé una de les peces importants de l’anàliside la història social, econòmica i cultural. El tema dels jueus acumula una amplabibliografia, atesa la rellevància d’aquesta minoria en el decurs de l’evolució històrica.Les connotacions de partida són, endemés, de caire bíblic; però els historiadors hantractat d’esbrinar, a banda d’aquestes perspectives que es relacionen de manera mésdirecta amb les confessions religioses, la funció d’un grup que tingué enormeimportància en camps diferents del coneixement, de la cultura (en el seu sentit més lax)i de l’economia.

Bach després de Bach : ressonàncies bachianes en obres posteriors de Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, Britten i Villa-Lobos

L’objectiu d’aquest projecte és estudiar la recepció de l’obra de Bach des de la seva vida fins l’actualitat. Es pretén, d’una banda, esbrinar quins són els motius que van produir que cada època històrica jutjés l’obra de Bach de diferent manera, quins van ser els mitjans de conservació de la seva obra així com quins canvis va patir la seva obra per tal d’encaixar amb cada època. D’altra banda pretén exemplificar aquesta diferència en la posició que cada època va atorgar a l’obra de Bach mitjançant obres de compositors posteriors (Mozart, Schumann, Brahms, Britten i Villa-Lobos) que, cadascuna de manera diferent, contenen alguna reminiscència de Bach. La metodologia utilitzada ha consistit en la seva major part en la recerca bibliogràfica però també en la comparació de versions d’obres musicals en partitures i gravacions. La conclusió principal que es pot extreure d’aquest treball és que cadascú és producte de la seva època amb el seu context particular i per tant, qualsevol interpretació que pugui fer d’una obra musical amb el seu estil compositiu ve fortament determinat per la ideologia del context que l’envolta. És normal, doncs, que el segle XVIII la decadència del pensament religiós comportés un rebuig per l’obra de Bach la qual és majoritàriament de caràcter religiós, mentre que el segle XIX amb l’emergència de la burgesia i els seus valors romàntics s’elevés la figura de Bach com l’heroi del poble alemany.

Simulação da dinâmica do carbono do solo numa microbacia rural pelo modelo Century

O objetivo deste trabalho foi combinar o modelo Century com técnicas de geoprocessamento e sensoriamento remoto, para avaliar a dinâmica espaço-temporal do carbono orgânico total do solo (COT). O estudo foi implementado numa microbacia rural, na encosta superior do Nordeste do Rio Grande do Sul, RS, que apresentava inicialmente uma cobertura florestal que foi convertida para agricultura, ao longo de 80 anos. A calibração adequada do modelo, principalmente dos parâmetros relacionados à decomposição do COT, nos anos iniciais de exploração agrícola, foi fundamental para possibilitar a simulação coerente dos valores de COT. Em relação à distribuição espacial do COT, foi verificado que o maior impacto da agricultura, sobre o estoque original de COT, ocorreu nas áreas sob cultivo desde 1925, nas quais se constatou decréscimo de 58,2% do COT. Verificou-se que a integração do Century com um sistema de informações geográficas torna possível o estudo da dinâmica espaço-temporal do COT e a realização de inventários relativos à distribuição do COT.

The change in dynasty brought with it a series of transformations to Peruvian viceroyalty political culture. Analysis is made of the government of the Marquis of Castelldosrius (1707-1710) who, in his eagerness to increase a meagre patrimony, was to attenuate his conflicts with the Creole sectors and the Consulate, with a style of politics that was characterised by courtly and cultural uses that included traditions that were in vogue in the courts of Louis XIV and in his native Catalonia
