Accurate assessment of anthropogenic carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions and their redistribution among the atmosphere, ocean, and terrestrial biosphere is important to better understand the global carbon cycle, support the development of climate policies, and project future climate change. Here we describe data sets and a methodology to quantify all major components of the global carbon budget, including their uncertainties, based on the combination of a range of data, algorithms, statistics and model estimates and their interpretation by a broad scientific community. We discuss changes compared to previous estimates, consistency within and among components, alongside methodology and data limitations. CO2 emissions from fossil-fuel combustion and cement production (EFF) are based on energy statistics, while emissions from land-use change (ELUC), mainly deforestation, are based on combined evidence from land-cover change data, fire activity associated with deforestation, and models. The global atmospheric CO2 concentration is measured directly and its rate of growth (GATM) is computed from the annual changes in concentration. The mean ocean CO2 sink (SOCEAN) is based on observations from the 1990s, while the annual anomalies and trends are estimated with ocean models. The variability in SOCEAN is evaluated for the first time in this budget with data products based on surveys of ocean CO2 measurements. The global residual terrestrial CO2 sink (SLAND) is estimated by the difference of the other terms of the global carbon budget and compared to results of independent dynamic global vegetation models forced by observed climate, CO2 and land cover change (some including nitrogen–carbon interactions). All uncertainties are reported as ± 1 σ, reflecting the current capacity to characterise the annual estimates of each component of the global carbon budget. For the last decade available (2003–2012), EFF was 8.6 ± 0.4 GtC yr − 1, ELUC 0.9 ± 0.5 GtC yr − 1, GATM 4.3 ± 0.1 GtC yr − 1, S OCEAN 2.5 ± 0.5 GtC yr − 1, and S LAND 2.8 ± 0.8 GtC yr − 1. For year 2012 alone, EFF grew to 9.7 ± 0.5 GtC yr − 1, 2.2 % above 2011, reflecting a continued growing trend in these emissions, GATM was 5.1 ± 0.2 GtC yr − 1, SOCEANwas 2.9 ± 0.5 GtC yr −1, and assuming an ELU Cof 1.0 ± 0.5 GtC yr − 1 (based on the 2001–2010 average), SLAND was 2.7 ± 0.9 GtC yr − 1. GATM was high in 2012 compared to the 2003–2012 average, almost entirely reflecting the high EFF. The global atmospheric CO2 con- centration reached 392.52 ± 0.10 ppm averaged over 2012. We estimate that EFF will increase by 2.1 % (1.1–3.1 %) to 9.9 ± 0.5 GtC in 2013, 61 % above emissions in 1990, based on projections of world gross domestic product and recent changes in the carbon intensity of the economy. With this projection, cumulative emissions of CO2 will reach about 535 ± 55 GtC for 1870–2013, about 70 % from EFF (390 ± 20 GtC) and 30 % from ELUC (145 ± 50 GtC). This paper also documents any changes in the methods and data sets used in this new carbon budget from previous budgets (Le Quéré et al., 2013). BACKGROUND Alcohol-related disorders are common, expensive in their course, and often underdiagnosed. To facilitate early diagnosis and therapy of alcohol-related disorders and to prevent later complications, questionnaires and biomarkers are useful. METHODS Indirect state markers like gamma-glutamyl-transpeptidase, mean corpuscular volume, and carbohydrate deficient transferrin are influenced by age, gender, various substances, and nonalcohol-related illnesses, and do not cover the entire timeline for alcohol consumption. Ethanol (EtOH) metabolites, such as ethyl glucuronide, ethyl sulfate, phosphatidylethanol, and fatty acid ethyl esters have gained enormous interest in the last decades as they are detectable after EtOH intake. RESULTS For each biomarker, pharmacological characteristics, detection methods in different body tissues, sensitivity/specificity values, cutoff values, time frames of detection, and general limitations are presented. Another focus of the review is the use of the markers in special clinical and forensic samples. CONCLUSIONS Depending on the biological material used for analysis, ethanol metabolites can be applied in different settings such as assessment of alcohol intake, screening, prevention, diagnosis, and therapy of alcohol use disorders.

Discriminating patients with a low risk of progression from those with lethal prostate cancer is one of the main challenges in prostate cancer management. Indeed, such discrimination is essential if we aim to avoid overtreatment in men with indolent disease and to improve survival in those men with lethal disease. We are reporting on the current literature on such prognostic tools that are now available, their clinical role and their limitations in individualizing care. There is an urgent need to incorporate such genomic tools into new platform-based clinical trial structures to further develop and validate prognostic and predictive biomarkers and provide prostate cancer patients with an effective and cost-efficient access to new drugs in the setting of personalized treatment.

The purpose of this study was to apply the Behavioral Model of Health Services Utilization to examine an existing worksite HRA program to identify and examine the roles of determinants of participation in HRA programs. The program consisted of three activities: questionnaire, physical examination, and group interpretation sessions. All of the 1821 employees were eligible for the program; 523 (29%) participated in at least one activity. Results from bivariate analyses suggest that being female, being white, having fewer dependents, and having higher medical claims for the past year were positively associated with participation. Results of logistic regression suggest that Age, Sex, Race, Marital, Number of Dependents, Job Title, Months with the Company, and a log transformed value of Employee's Total Medical Claims were all significant determinants of participation. Applications of the logistic regression models, other factors that should be investigated in future studies, and the limitations of the study were discussed. ^

Detailed data on the health status of Saudi women are lacking. This cross sectional study attempts to provide a comprehensive description of the health status of Saudi females between the ages of 15-45 residing in Yanbu Al-Siniyah. The purpose is to assess women's needs for health services. The health status indicators are chronic tracer conditions, reported symptoms and multidimensional functioning levels. The generic functioning instrument of the Medical Outcome Study was used to estimate physical, social, and role functioning; degree of pain and health perceptions. The information was obtained by interviewing subjects and abstracting facts from their medical records. The results show functioning scores are in the "well health" range for physical, social, role and pain. Crowding and education have an equal or stronger effect of reducing functioning levels than the diagnosed tracer conditions. The highest prevalence conditions having a definite functional impact and diagnosed adequately in primary care are anemia, urinary tract infection, hemorrhoids, rheumatoid arthritis, caries and gingivitis. Reported symptoms strongly reducing function levels in this study are dyspnea, heart pain, incontinence, eye and skin problems, and joint ache. The impact of the reliability and validity of the measures used and other limitations of the results are discussed. Finally, some policy implications and suggestions for future study are presented. ^

Pasados veinte años de la reinstalación de la democracia, se hace una reflexión de los sentidos que la democracia ha tenido en la historia argentina. La analogía con pacto civilizatorio, en el sentido freudiano de reconocimiento de la ley, es un punto de partida metafórico para observar cómo a través del tiempo el pacto originario sufrió no sólo cambios en su significación, sino quiebres y rupturas que condujeron a estados de violencia cada vez más profundos, rompiendo con las formas de convivencia ciudadana. La focalización del último período democrático pondera a través del relato de los procesos políticos, no sólo las expectativas y desilusiones ciudadanas, sino los avances y limitaciones institucionales de los últimos veinte años.

Los microemprendimientos productivos surgen en la última década como una opción alternativa para el tratamiento de la problemática laboral de los jóvenes en América Latina. En este trabajo realizamos una discusión sobre el alcance y las características de este tipo de intervenciones, analizando sus potencialidades y sus limitaciones en contextos con elevados índices de pobreza y mercados de trabajo deprimidos. En el texto, luego de realizar una breve revisión del estado del arte sobre el tema, presentamos los avances de un estudio en el que analizamos los primeros resultados de un programa implementado, hace algunos años, en la Ciudad de Resistencia (Provincia del Chaco) con dicho objetivo

El presente trabajo trata de realizar un diagnóstico de la situación de los ambientes del norte de Córdoba en general, y de los departamentos Río Seco, Tulumba y Sobremonte en particular, rastreando las causas del deterioro de los ecosistemas involucrados. Se analizan así, las formas de apropiación de la naturaleza y valorización de los recursos naturales que hicieron las sociedades a través del tiempo. El modelo político-económico dominante a escala nacional repercutió fuertemente sobre las actividades productivas mas importantes de la región, basadas en una ganadería extensiva bovina y caprina y en la tala del monte para obtención de leña y carbón. Estas actividades desarrolladas tradicionalmente por unidades domésticas, hoy, en gran parte, han sido reemplazadas por el cultivo de soja. La crisis de las modalidades productivas locales así, como los cambios acaecidos en los procesos de trabajo de los cultivos de soja que limitan notablemente las posibilidades de inserción laboral estacional, agravan las condiciones de subsistencia de las familias de la región. El marco teórico se construye a partir del diálogo entre las perspectivas historicistas y los enfoques renovados en geografía, ya que ofrecen un amplio arco de vertientes que intentan explicar el estado actual de un territorio a partir del largo proceso de intervenciones humanas, a menudo teñido de diversas irracionalidades. El trabajo tiene como objetivo, mostrar la indisoluble e irreductible relación sociedad-naturaleza. En efecto, el empobrecimiento por degradación de una, conlleva al deterioro y al agravamiento de la situación de la otra. En este caso, el deterioro de los bosques y ecosistemas en general, paralelo a la crisis económica local, coloca a las poblaciones de los departamentos Río Seco, Tulumba y Sobremonte del norte de cordobés, en los márgenes del sistema.

En Buenos Aires, el periodo que transcurre entre 1839 y 1869 se caracterizó por un crecimiento económico casi constante. Dicho proceso generó una creciente desigualdad en la distribución de la riqueza (fundamentalmente de la tierra) pero produjo una importante movilidad social, sobre todo entre 1839 y 1855. La región Oeste presenta particularidades bien marcadas en el proceso señalado que aún no han sido estudiadas en detalle. A partir del análisis conjunto del impuesto de la Contribución Directa y los expedientes de tierras, se estudian las causas del movimiento diferencial que se operó allí. Se analizan los partidos de Chivilcoy, Mercedes y Suipacha (ex partido de la Guardia de Luján hasta 1845) porque sintetizan muy bien los cambios operados en la región de estudio

This paper has as objective to analyze the foundry work politics made by the Olívio Dutra's government in the state of Rio Grande do Sul-Brazil, being taken into account their guidelines, the dynamics of the political struggle promoted between the social leaders from the rural area and the achieved global results. This government's freshness is related to the fact of it was being sustained and supported by a coalition of left wing parties and by a group of social movements and also by syndical entities of the field, which was decisive in the presentation of an antagonistic program to the neoliberal politics on energy in a national extent. Hence this government became committed in adopting an own foundry work politics, being opposed to the program of market land reform extolled by Cardoso's government, in national wide. Therefore, the results presented along the article demonstrate that in spite of the assumed commitments and, in face of legal, institutional and economical limitations and also its existent politics, the space of the state governments' performance can only be thought about its complemental character on the federal government's actions.

En tanto "mapa" es toda "representación gráfica que facilita el conocimiento espacial de cosas, conceptos, condiciones, procesos o eventos que conciernen al mundo humano", el término "mapa" refiere a muchas imágenes muy diferentes, que usan diversas técnicas y soportes, apelan a lenguajes visuales muy heterogéneos, convenciones gráficas que han variado a lo largo del tiempo, etcétera. Este trabajo propone dos categorías metodológicas para abordar la pluralidad de la imagen cartográfica sin renunciar a esa definición amplia e inclusiva. La primera es la noción de género cartográfico, que permite agrupar y clasificar mapas que comparten claves temáticas, estilísticas, técnicas y/o composicionales. La segunda es la noción de serie, porque el armado de una serie crea claves de lectura y de interpretación y, consecuentemente, un mismo mapa no comunica lo mismo en dos series diferentes. Con ejemplos se discutirán las potencialidades y las limitaciones de estas propuestas metodológicas.

Las instituciones para la gestión hídrica tienen serias dificultades para asir la realidad a intervenir porque parten de supuestos abstractos y homogéneos que poco se asemejan a las complejas problemáticas locales, conflictivas y heterogéneas que estarían destinadas a mejorar. Se genera así una problemática brecha entre las políticas públicas y los problemas concretos. El trabajo propone discutir los marcos teóricos institucionales dominantes señalando limitaciones e implicaciones. A partir de una revisión crítica de bibliografía sobre el tema, el artículo establece líneas de base así como un conjunto de dimensiones de análisis que -desde una mirada diferente- aporte a la conformación de un régimen institucional que contribuya a la reproducción sustentable de los recursos hídricos

Este trabajo presenta una reflexión metodológica relativa al uso de escalas de estimaciones sumadas o Likert en la evaluación del desempeño docente en el contexto universitario. Se presentan antecedentes en el marco de las prescripciones técnicas para este tipo de escalamientos, así como un conjunto de observaciones referidas a la pertinencia de su aplicación con fines evaluativos y a sus limitaciones en tanto herramienta para la generación de conocimiento. Se concluye que la escala de Likert puede ser utilizada en contexto evaluativos, atendiendo al conjunto de requerimientos ligados a su aplicación y tratamiento analítico-interpretativo, reconociendo los problemas insalvables que presenta, de manera de sopesar y relativizar la construcción del dato numeral. De este modo, se hace explícita la crítica al carácter "quantofrénico" y "artefactual" que acompaña su aplicación, y que contradictoriamente se inscribe en un discurso que sitúa la evaluación docente en el marco de políticas de calidad en educación superior
