The motivation for this research initiated from the abrupt rise and fall of minicomputers which were initially used both for industrial automation and business applications due to their significantly lower cost than their predecessors, the mainframes. Later industrial automation developed its own vertically integrated hardware and software to address the application needs of uninterrupted operations, real-time control and resilience to harsh environmental conditions. This has led to the creation of an independent industry, namely industrial automation used in PLC, DCS, SCADA and robot control systems. This industry employs today over 200'000 people in a profitable slow clockspeed context in contrast to the two mainstream computing industries of information technology (IT) focused on business applications and telecommunications focused on communications networks and hand-held devices. Already in 1990s it was foreseen that IT and communication would merge into one Information and communication industry (ICT). The fundamental question of the thesis is: Could industrial automation leverage a common technology platform with the newly formed ICT industry? Computer systems dominated by complex instruction set computers (CISC) were challenged during 1990s with higher performance reduced instruction set computers (RISC). RISC started to evolve parallel to the constant advancement of Moore's law. These developments created the high performance and low energy consumption System-on-Chip architecture (SoC). Unlike to the CISC processors RISC processor architecture is a separate industry from the RISC chip manufacturing industry. It also has several hardware independent software platforms consisting of integrated operating system, development environment, user interface and application market which enables customers to have more choices due to hardware independent real time capable software applications. An architecture disruption merged and the smartphone and tablet market were formed with new rules and new key players in the ICT industry. Today there are more RISC computer systems running Linux (or other Unix variants) than any other computer system. The astonishing rise of SoC based technologies and related software platforms in smartphones created in unit terms the largest installed base ever seen in the history of computers and is now being further extended by tablets. An underlying additional element of this transition is the increasing role of open source technologies both in software and hardware. This has driven the microprocessor based personal computer industry with few dominating closed operating system platforms into a steep decline. A significant factor in this process has been the separation of processor architecture and processor chip production and operating systems and application development platforms merger into integrated software platforms with proprietary application markets. Furthermore the pay-by-click marketing has changed the way applications development is compensated: Three essays on major trends in a slow clockspeed industry: The case of industrial automation 2014 freeware, ad based or licensed - all at a lower price and used by a wider customer base than ever before. Moreover, the concept of software maintenance contract is very remote in the app world. However, as a slow clockspeed industry, industrial automation has remained intact during the disruptions based on SoC and related software platforms in the ICT industries. Industrial automation incumbents continue to supply systems based on vertically integrated systems consisting of proprietary software and proprietary mainly microprocessor based hardware. They enjoy admirable profitability levels on a very narrow customer base due to strong technology-enabled customer lock-in and customers' high risk leverage as their production is dependent on fault-free operation of the industrial automation systems. When will this balance of power be disrupted? The thesis suggests how industrial automation could join the mainstream ICT industry and create an information, communication and automation (ICAT) industry. Lately the Internet of Things (loT) and weightless networks, a new standard leveraging frequency channels earlier occupied by TV broadcasting, have gradually started to change the rigid world of Machine to Machine (M2M) interaction. It is foreseeable that enough momentum will be created that the industrial automation market will in due course face an architecture disruption empowered by these new trends. This thesis examines the current state of industrial automation subject to the competition between the incumbents firstly through a research on cost competitiveness efforts in captive outsourcing of engineering, research and development and secondly researching process re- engineering in the case of complex system global software support. Thirdly we investigate the industry actors', namely customers, incumbents and newcomers, views on the future direction of industrial automation and conclude with our assessments of the possible routes industrial automation could advance taking into account the looming rise of the Internet of Things (loT) and weightless networks. Industrial automation is an industry dominated by a handful of global players each of them focusing on maintaining their own proprietary solutions. The rise of de facto standards like IBM PC, Unix and Linux and SoC leveraged by IBM, Compaq, Dell, HP, ARM, Apple, Google, Samsung and others have created new markets of personal computers, smartphone and tablets and will eventually also impact industrial automation through game changing commoditization and related control point and business model changes. This trend will inevitably continue, but the transition to a commoditized industrial automation will not happen in the near future.

La teoría de los constructos personales (TCP) de Kelly (1955) y el enfoque sistémicoson, al menos a primera vista, dos tradiciones diferentes en el abordaje terapéutico.Originalmente, la TCP enfatizaba los procesos de construcción de un solo individuo (porejemplo, Bannister y Fransella, 1986), y sólo se amplió su objetivo gradualmente para incluir parejas (por ejemplo, G. Neimeyer, 1985; Ryle, 1975). Por lo tanto, su enfoque terapéutico era principalmente intrapsíquico o diádico. Por el contrario, la conceptualización de unproblema desde la perspectiva sistémica incluía siempre el contexto familiar. En dichocontexto, la conducta individual se entendía principalmente como una función dentro delsistema familiar más amplio. Remote monitoring through the use of cameras is widely utilized for traffic operation, but has not been utilized widely for roadway maintenance operations. The Utah Department of Transportation (UDOT) has implemented a new remote monitoring system, referred to as a Cloud-enabled Remote Video Streaming (CRVS) camera system for snow removal-related maintenance operations in the winter. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness of the use of the CRVS camera system in snow removal-related maintenance operations. This study was conducted in two parts: opinion surveys of maintenance station supervisors and an analysis on snow removal-related maintenance costs. The responses to the opinion surveys mostly displayed positive reviews of the use of the CRVS cameras. On a scale of 1 (least effective) to 5 (most effective), the average overall effectiveness given by the station supervisors was 4.3. An expedition trip for this study was defined as a trip that was made to just check the roadways if snow-removal was necessary. The average of the responses received from surveys was calculated to be a 33 percent reduction in expedition trips. For the second part of this study, an analysis was performed on the snow removal-related maintenance cost data provided by UDOT to see if the installation of a CRVS camera had an effect in reducing expedition trips. This expedition cost comparison was performed for 10 sets of maintenance stations within Utah. It was difficult to make any definitive inferences from the comparison of expedition costs over the years for which precipitation and expedition cost data were available; hence a statistical analysis was performed using the Mixed Model ANOVA. This analysis resulted in an average of 14 percent higher ratio of expedition costs at maintenance stations with a CRVS camera before the installation of the camera compared to the ratio of expedition costs after the installation of the camera. This difference was not proven to be statistically significant at the 95 percent confident level, but indicated that the installation of CRVS cameras was on the average helpful in reducing expedition costs and may be considered practically significant. It is recommended that more detailed and consistent maintenance cost records be prepared for accurate analysis of cost records for this type of study in the future.

IRATI es un proyecto STReP (Specific Targeted Research Project) financiado por la Unión Europea dentro del programa FP7 (Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development). El objetivo general de IRATI es conseguir una mayor compresión y exploración de RINA. El trabajo que se reportará en este PFM es (aproximadamente) la primera fase del diseño y desarrollo de un prototipo de RINA sobre Ethernet en el seno del Kernel (Linux), basándose y generando software libre.

BACKGROUND: The need for an integrated view of data obtained from high-throughput technologies gave rise to network analyses. These are especially useful to rationalize how external perturbations propagate through the expression of genes. To address this issue in the case of drug resistance, we constructed biological association networks of genes differentially expressed in cell lines resistant to methotrexate (MTX). METHODS: Seven cell lines representative of different types of cancer, including colon cancer (HT29 and Caco2), breast cancer (MCF-7 and MDA-MB-468), pancreatic cancer (MIA PaCa-2), erythroblastic leukemia (K562) and osteosarcoma (Saos-2), were used. The differential expression pattern between sensitive and MTX-resistant cells was determined by whole human genome microarrays and analyzed with the GeneSpring GX software package. Genes deregulated in common between the different cancer cell lines served to generate biological association networks using the Pathway Architect software. RESULTS: Dikkopf homolog-1 (DKK1) is a highly interconnected node in the network generated with genes in common between the two colon cancer cell lines, and functional validations of this target using small interfering RNAs (siRNAs) showed a chemosensitization toward MTX. Members of the UDP-glucuronosyltransferase 1A (UGT1A) family formed a network of genes differentially expressed in the two breast cancer cell lines. siRNA treatment against UGT1A also showed an increase in MTX sensitivity. Eukaryotic translation elongation factor 1 alpha 1 (EEF1A1) was overexpressed among the pancreatic cancer, leukemia and osteosarcoma cell lines, and siRNA treatment against EEF1A1 produced a chemosensitization toward MTX. CONCLUSIONS: Biological association networks identified DKK1, UGT1As and EEF1A1 as important gene nodes in MTX-resistance. Treatments using siRNA technology against these three genes showed chemosensitization toward MTX.

La finalitat d'aquest projecte és la creació d'una aplicació que faci les funcions d'una Autoritat de Certificació (CA) dins del marc d'una Infraestructura de Clau Pública (PKI). Aquesta aplicació té una interfície web que ofereix una sèrie de serveis en línia.Les operacions que ofereix seran de dos tipus:- Públiques: d'accés obert i que permet obtenir certificats mitjançant fitxers de petició PKCS#10 o introduint les dades de l'usuari. També permet descarregar la Llista de Revocació de Certificats (CRL) i el certificat arrel de la CA.- Privades: on l'usuari s'haurà d'autenticar prèviament com a administrador, ja sigui amb una connexió local i l'ús d'un nom d'usuari i una contrasenya o amb la presentació d'un certificat autoritzat. Les funcions que es podran dur a terme inclouen la posada en marxa de l'aplicació, la seva reinicialització, la gestió de drets d'administrador, la consulta de certificats, la revocació d'aquests o la publicació de la CRL.Les operacions internes de l'aplicació estan separades de la interfície amb l'objectiu de que es puguin fer servir des d'un altre programari.El producte ha estat desenvolupat en llenguatge Java i s'executa mitjançant un contenidor de servlets Apache Tomcat sobre Linux (tot i que seria fàcilment portable a altres contenidors i sistemes operatius). Es fa servir una base de dades MySQL per emmagatzemar la informació de l'aplicació.L'objectiu del projecte és aprofundir en els coneixements sobre Infraestructures de Clau Pública i en les funcions i serveis que ha d'oferir una Autoritat de Certificació, posant un especial èmfasi en tot el referent a la seguretat del sistema.

Internet s'ha convertit en una font extraordinària de recursos per una audiència en constant creixement arreu el món. A l'igual que en altres activitats de la nostra societat, el coneixement de la localització geogràfica d'aquests recursos i de la gent que hi accedeix és útil tant pels usuaris com pels proveïdors d'informació. La geolocalització IP, però, pot donar informació errònia o amb un nivell de precisió que no vagi més enllà de la referència a un país.Aquest treball recull els diferents actors que formen part de la geolocalització IP i s'ha analitzat el paper que juguen en aquest procés així com la seva influència en el nivell de fiabilitat i exactitud final. Amb aquests sòlids fonaments s'ha desenvolupat una aplicació per representar gràficament en un mapa la geolocalització IP d'un dispositiu i la dels nodes que formen el camí realitzat fins arribar-hi, així com tota la informació addicional que de cada IP s'ha pogut obtenir.El resultat ha estat una memòria tècnica de tot el treball de recerca juntament amb una aplicació que s'executa en l'entorn de Microsoft Windows i plataforma .NET, caracteritzada per la seva facilitat d'ús gràcies a un disseny simple molt intuïtiu i efectiu, la rapidesa d'execució per què aprofita la programació de fils, i un positiu impacte visual ja que fa servir l'API de Google Maps per a la representació visual de la traça.

Surface functionalization of hydroxyapatite (HA) and beta-tricalcium phosphate (TCP) bioceramics with chemical ligands containing a pyrrogallol moiety was developed to improve the adhesion of bone cell precursors to the biomaterials. Fast and biocompatible copper-free click reaction with azido-modified human fetal osteoblasts resulted in improved cell binding to both HA and TCP bioceramics, opening the way for using this methodology in the preparation of cell-engineered bone implants.

Aquest projecte es va realitzar per a un client que disposa d’un conjunt d’uns 100 ordinadors per a accés a internet amb accés temporitzat per monedes, ubicats en diferents locals, I havia observat una creixent demanda del servei d’impressió, entre d'altres per a fer el checkin per a ryanair.L'objecte d'aquest projecte és crear un sistema que permeti realitzar el cobrament de les impressions de forma prèvia i automàtica, alhora que clara per al client final. Aquest sistema ha de funcionar de forma autònoma, alliberant així al personal del local de les tasques de gestió de la impressora.Cal tenir en compte que aquest sistema ha de funcionar tant per a Linux com per a Windows XP o superior.Es dissenyarà l’electrònica i el software corresponent al servidor d’ impressió,així com les comunicacions entre el servidor d’impressió i els ordinadors per monedes. Quant als ordinadors controlats per monedes, s'implantarà la comunicació amb el moneder, per tal de controlar el crèdit disponible i descomptar el temps corresponent a les impressions. Per altre banda, es realitzarà una interfície d'usuari on es comunicarà a l’usuari el preu de les impressions, el temps que se li restarà, el que té disponible i el que li restaràdesprés de realitzar la impressió. En aquesta mateixa pantalla se li donarà la opció d'acceptar o rebutjar la impressió abans que li sigui descomptada del temps disponible

In this article, we offer an overview of the compared quantitative importance of biotransformation reactions in the metabolism of drugs and other xenobiotics, based on a meta-analysis of current research interests. Also, we assess the relative significance the enzyme (super)families or categories catalysing these reactions. We put the facts unveiled by the analysis into a drug discovery context and draw some implications. The results confirm the primary role of cytochrome P450-catalysed oxidations and UDP-glucuronosyl-catalysed glucuronidations, but they also document the marked significance of several other reactions. Thus, there is a need for several drug discovery scientists to better grasp the variety of drug metabolism reactions and enzymes and their consequences.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi estabelecer um padrão para a caracterização molecular e a diferenciação de porta-enxertos de pessegueiro, bem como estimar parâmetros de variabilidade genética com base em marcadores codominantes. Catorze genótipos foram avaliados com uso de iniciadores para locos microssatélites das séries BPPCT e UDP, e para locos STS e SCAR. O perfil eletroforético foi registrado quanto à presença ou à ausência de bandas, as quais foram usadas para calcular a similaridade genética entre cultivares, por meio do coeficiente "simple matching", e para a análise de agrupamento de cultivares, pelo método das médias aritméticas não ponderadas (UPGMA). Foram calculados: número de alelos por loco, frequências alélicas, heterozigosidade esperada e observada, endogamia e conteúdo de informação polimórfica (PIC). Os 18 locos avaliados produziram 82 polimorfismos e permitiram elaborar um dendrograma que discriminou os genótipos em três grupos principais. A heterozigosidade esperada e observada nos 18 locos SSR foi de 0, 66 e 0, 22, respectivamente. Valores máximos para endogamia (1, 0) foram identificados nos locos UDP 98407, UDP 98412, BPPCT 034, BPPCT 016, SCAR-SCAL 19 e STS OPAP4. O PIC variou de 0, 81, para SCAR-SCAL 19, a 0, 46, para UDP 98407. O polimorfismo dos 18 marcadores possibilita obter acurada relação genética entre os genótipos de pessegueiro avaliados e identificar os mais contrastantes para uso em programas de melhoramento.

Un treball final de carrera (TFC) és un dels últims passos de molts estudis, com per exemple els graus d'enginyeria. Els estudiants solen presentar els resultats del seu projecte final en una presentació pública, on un comitè avalua el seu treball. Els estudiants, en aquesta activitat, s'ocupen de competències com ara: fer presentacions orals efectives en entorns públics, en una situació estressant. Però, es pot assolir aquesta competència en un entorn virtual?A la Universitat Oberta de Catalunya (UOC), una universitat 100% virtual, es proposa una solució basada en les presentacions en vídeo que es pugen en una eina, Present@, que els permet compartir les presentacions i permet fer preguntes i escriure les respostes en un entorn obert.Present@ ofereix una eina millorada per pujar vídeos, que simplifica el procés i fa que sigui apropiada per als estudiants de qualsevol àrea de coneixement. Però treballar amb vídeos va un pas més enllà i requereix també la tecnologia adequada per donar suport a aquest tipus d'arxius. Així, s'ha afegit al Present@ un servei d'"streaming", Kaltura. Amb aquest servei els estudiants poden pujar fàcilment gairebé qualsevol format de vídeo i és possible fer comentaris en vídeo.131 estudiants han estat usant el Present@ durant 4 semestres. Per avaluar l'eina, els estudiants han contestat un qüestionari i de les respostes rebudes es conclou que aquest enfocament permet als estudiants virtuals adquirir la major part de les competències relacionades amb el TFC i, en concret, amb la dissertació virtual en entorns virtuals. Potser l'única característica a què no s'enfronten és la tensió de les preguntes.És important assenyalar que, gràcies a les millores introduïdes, el Present@ està present, actualment en més de 100 aules a UOC i s'utilitza no només per al TFC, sinó també per explicar assignatures per ajudar els estudiants
