I - As minhas expectativas eram elevadas pois este regresso à Escola Superior de Música de Lisboa permitia-me voltar a trabalhar com os professores que me formaram como músico e professor e com eles poder actualizar-me sobre vários temas ligados à pedagogia. Este aspecto é muito importante pois chego à conclusão que o tempo por vezes provoca-nos excesso de confiança que parece “cegar-nos” não nos deixando ver erros pedagógicos muitas vezes evitáveis. Quando ingressei neste estágio sentia-me confiante e seguro quanto às minhas capacidades como professor. O momento de viragem na minha perspectiva do estágio dá-se quando surgem as observações/gravações e respectivas análises e reflexões das aulas. Procurei trabalhar nessas aulas da forma mais natural possível pois o meu objectivo era observar o meu trabalho diário. A primeira observação das aulas permitiu-me anotar algumas coisas menos boas. Contudo, quando essa observação foi feita com o professor de didática os aspectos menos positivos ganharam uma enorme proporção: (1) falhas ao nível da instrução: demasiado longo, (2) feedback de pouca qualidade ou eficácia , (3) pouca percentagem de alunos que atingiam os objectivos., (4) ritmo de aula por vezes baixo devido a períodos longos de instrução ou devido a uma má gestão do espaço. Todos estes problemas eram mais visíveis quando as turmas eram maiores. Ao longo do estágio, e após a detecção destas falhas, fui procurando evitar estas práticas em todas as turmas onde leccionava. Senti que o ritmo de aula aumentou substancialmente não apenas à custa da energia do professor e de boas estratégias mas porque sobretudo se “falava menos e trabalhava-se mais”. Os erros dos alunos passaram a ser corrigos enquanto trabalhavam (feedback corretivo próximo do momento positivo ou negativo), o feedback positivo passou a ser mais destacado, a disposição da sala alterou-se de forma aos alunos estarem mais perto do professor, e este procurou ser menos “criativo” no momento de alterar o plano de aula devido a ideias momentâneas o que provocou mais tempo para cada estratégia e para que mais alunos fossem atingindo os objectivos. Apesar da evolução no sentido de proporcionar aos alunos aulas mais rentáveis e de ainda melhor qualidade, existe a consciência que alguns dos erros cometidos eram hábitos e como tal poderão levar algum tempo a ser corrigidos. Contudo, existe a consciência e a vontade em debelá-los da minha prática docente.

Gravity loads can affect a reinforced concrete structure's response to seismic actions, however, traditional procedures for testing the beam behaviour do not take this effect into consideration. An experimental campaign was carried out in order to assess the influence of the gravity load on RC beam connection to the column subjected to cyclic loading. The experiments included the imposition of a conventional quasi-static test protocol based on the imposition of a reverse cyclic displacement history and of an alternative cyclic test procedure starting from the gravity load effects. The test results are presented, compared and analysed in this paper. The imposition of a cyclic test procedure that included the gravity loads effects on the RC beam ends reproduces the demands on the beams' critical zones more realistically than the traditional procedure. The consideration of the vertical load effects in the test procedure led to an accumulation of negative (hogging) deformation. This phenomenon is sustained with the behaviour of a portal frame system under cyclic loads subject to a significant level of the vertical load, leading to the formation of unidirectional plastic hinges. In addition, the hysteretic behaviour of the RC beam ends tested was simulated numerically using the nonlinear structural analysis software - OpenSees. The beam-column model simulates the global element behaviour very well, as there is a reasonable approximation to the hysteretic loops obtained experimentally. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. The use of fibre reinforced plastics – FRP’s – in structures is under a considerable increase. Advantages of their use are related with their low weight, high strength and stiffness. The improvement of the dynamic characteristics has been profitable for aeronautics, automobile, railway, naval and sporting goods industries. Drilling is a widely used machining technique as it is needed to assemble parts in a structure. This is a unique machining process, characterized by the existence of two different mechanisms: extrusion by the drill chisel edge and cutting by the rotating cutting lips. Drilling raises particular problems that can reduce mechanical and fatigue strength of the parts. In this work, quasi-isotropic hybrid laminates with 25% of carbon fibre reinforced plies and 4 mm thickness are produced, tested and drilled. Three different drill geometries are compared. Results considered are the interlaminar fracture toughness in Mode I – GIc –, thrust force during drilling and delamination extent after drilling. A bearing test is performed to evaluate tool influence on the load carrying capacity of the plate. Results consider the influence of drill geometry on delamination. A correlation linking plate damage to bearing test results is presented.

A mathematical model is proposed for the evolution of temperature, chemical composition, and energy release in bubbles, clouds, and emulsion phase during combustion of gaseous premixtures of air and propane in a bubbling fluidized bed. The analysis begins as the bubbles are formed at the orifices of the distributor, until they explode inside the bed or emerge at the free surface of the bed. The model also considers the freeboard region of the fluidized bed until the propane is thoroughly burned. It is essentially built upon the quasi-global mechanism of Hautman et al. (1981) and the mass and heat transfer equations from the two-phase model of Davidson and Harrison (1963). The focus is not on a new modeling approach, but on combining the classical models of the kinetics and other diffusional aspects to obtain a better insight into the events occurring inside a fluidized bed reactor. Experimental data are obtained to validate the model by testing the combustion of commercial propane, in a laboratory-scale fluidized bed, using four sand particle sizes: 400–500, 315–400, 250–315, and 200–250 µm. The mole fractions of CO2, CO, and O2 in the flue gases and the temperature of the fluidized bed are measured and compared with the numerical results.

Fiber reinforced plastics are increasing their importance as one of the most interesting groups of material on account of their low weight, high strength, and stiffness. To obtain good quality holes, it is important to identify the type of material, ply stacking sequence, and fiber orientation. In this article, the drilling of quasi-isotropic hybrid carbon +glass/epoxy plates is analyzed. Two commercial drills and a special step drill are compared considering the thrust force and delamination extension. Results suggest that the proposed step drill can be a suitable option in laminate drilling.

The use of fiber reinforced plastics has increased in the last decades due to their unique properties. Advantages of their use are related with low weight, high strength and stiffness. Drilling of composite plates can be carried out in conventional machinery with some adaptations. However, the presence of typical defects like delamination can affect mechanical properties of produced parts. In this paper delamination influence in bearing stress of drilled hybrid carbon+glass/epoxy quasi-isotropic plates is studied by using image processing and analysis techniques. Results from bearing test show that damage minimization is an important mean to improve mechanical properties of the joint area of the plate. The appropriateness of the image processing and analysis techniques used in the measurement of the damaged area is demonstrated.

A new method, based on linear correlation and phase diagrams was successfully developed for processes like the sedimentary process, where the deposition phase can have different time duration - represented by repeated values in a series - and where the erosion can play an important rule deleting values of a series. The sampling process itself can be the cause of repeated values - large strata twice sampled - or deleted values: tiny strata fitted between two consecutive samples. What we developed was a mathematical procedure which, based upon the depth chemical composition evolution, allows the establishment of frontiers as well as the periodicity of different sedimentary environments. The basic tool isn't more than a linear correlation analysis which allow us to detect the existence of eventual evolution rules, connected with cyclical phenomena within time series (considering the space assimilated to time), with the final objective of prevision. A very interesting discovery was the phenomenon of repeated sliding windows that represent quasi-cycles of a series of quasi-periods. An accurate forecast can be obtained if we are inside a quasi-cycle (it is possible to predict the other elements of the cycle with the probability related with the number of repeated and deleted points). We deal with an innovator methodology, reason why it's efficiency is being tested in some case studies, with remarkable results that shows it's efficacy. Post-processing a finite element solution is a well-known technique, which consists in a recalculation of the originally obtained quantities such that the rate of convergence increases without the need for expensive remeshing techniques. Postprocessing is especially effective in problems where better accuracy is required for derivatives of nodal variables in regions where Dirichlet essential boundary condition is imposed strongly. Consequently such an approach can be exceptionally good in modelling of resin infiltration under quasi steady-state assumption by remeshing techniques and with explicit time integration, because only the free-front normal velocities are necessary to advance the resin front to the next position. The new contribution is the post-processing analysis and implementation of the freeboundary velocities of mesolevel infiltration analysis. Such implementation ensures better accuracy on even coarser meshes, which in consequence reduces the computational time also by the possibility of employing larger time steps.

The [NiFe] hydrogenase from Desulfovibrio vulgaris Hildenborough was isolated from the cytoplasmic membranes and characterized by EPR spectroscopy. It has a total molecular mass of 98.7 kDa (subunits of 66.4 and 32.3 kDa), and contains 1 nickel and 12 Fe atoms per heterodimer. The catalytic activities for hydrogen consumption and production were determined to be 174 and 89 umol H2 min-1 mg -1, respectively. As isolated, under aerobic conditions, this hydrogenase exhibits EPR signals characteristic of the nickel centers in [NiFe] hydrogenases (Ni-A signal at gx,y,z=2.32, 2.23 and ~2.0 and Ni-B signal at gx,y,z=2.33, 2.16 and ~2.0) as well as an intense quasi-isotropic signal centered at g=2.02 due to the oxidized [3Fe-4S] center. The redox profile under hydrogen atmosphere is remarkably similar to that of other [NiFe] hydrogenases. The signals observed for the oxidized state disappear, first being substituted by the Ni-C type signal (gx,y,z=2.19, 2.14, ~2.01), which upon long incubation under hydrogen yields the split Ni-C signal due to interaction with the reduced [4Fe-4S] centers.

This paper presents a new communication architecture to enable the remote control, monitoring and debug of embedded-system controllers designed using IOPT Petri nets. IOPT Petri nets and the related tools (http://gres.uninova.pt) have been used as a rapid prototyping and development framework, including model-checking, simulation and automatic code generation tools. The new architecture adds remote operation capabilities to the controllers produced by the automatic code generators, enabling quasi-real-time remote debugging and monitoring using the IOPT simulator tool. Furthermore, it enables the creation of graphical user interfaces for remote operation and the development of distributed systems where a Petri net model running on a central system supervises the actions of multiple remote subsystems. © 2015 IEEE.

This work provides an assessment of layerwise mixed models using least-squares formulation for the coupled electromechanical static analysis of multilayered plates. In agreement with three-dimensional (3D) exact solutions, due to compatibility and equilibrium conditions at the layers interfaces, certain mechanical and electrical variables must fulfill interlaminar C-0 continuity, namely: displacements, in-plane strains, transverse stresses, electric potential, in-plane electric field components and transverse electric displacement (if no potential is imposed between layers). Hence, two layerwise mixed least-squares models are here investigated, with two different sets of chosen independent variables: Model A, developed earlier, fulfills a priori the interiaminar C-0 continuity of all those aforementioned variables, taken as independent variables; Model B, here newly developed, rather reduces the number of independent variables, but also fulfills a priori the interlaminar C-0 continuity of displacements, transverse stresses, electric potential and transverse electric displacement, taken as independent variables. The predictive capabilities of both models are assessed by comparison with 3D exact solutions, considering multilayered piezoelectric composite plates of different aspect ratios, under an applied transverse load or surface potential. It is shown that both models are able to predict an accurate quasi-3D description of the static electromechanical analysis of multilayered plates for all aspect ratios.
