The miscibility and phase behavior of polysulfone (PSF) and poly(hydroxyether of bisphenol A) (phenoxy) with a series of copoly(ether ether ketone) (COPEEK), a random copolymer of poly(ether ether ketone) (PEEK), and phenolphthalein poly(ether ether ketone) (PEK-C) was studied using differential scanning calorimetry. A COPEEK copolymer containing 6 mol % ether ether ketone (EEK) repeat units is miscible with PSF, whereas copolymers containing 12 mol % EEK and more are not. COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are completely miscible with phenoxy, but those containing 24 mol % EEK and more are immiscible with phenoxy. Moreover, a copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK is partially miscible with phenoxy; the blends show two transitions in the midcomposition region and single transitions at either extreme. Two T(g)s were observed for the 50/50 blend of phenoxy with the copolymer containing 17 mol % EEK, whereas a single composition-dependent T-g appeared for all the other compositions. An FTIR study revealed that there exist hydrogen-bonding interactions between phenoxy and the copolymers. The strengths of the hydrogen-bonding interactions in the blends of the COPEEK copolymers containing 6 and 12 mol % EEK are the same as that in the phenoxy/PEK-C blend. However, for the blends of copolymers containing 17, 24, and 28 mol % EEK, the hydrogen-bonding interactions become increasingly unfavorable and the self-association of the hydroxyl groups of phenoxy is preferable as the content of EEK units in the copolymer increases. The observed miscibility was interpreted qualitatively in terms of the mean-field approach. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

Miscibility, crystallization, and mechanical properties of blends of thermosetting polyimide PMR-15 and phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone) (PEK-C) were examined. With the exception of the 90/10 blend, which has two glass transition peaks, all the blends with PMR-15 less than 90 wt % are miscible in the amorphous state according to DMA results. Addition of PEK-C hindered significantly the crystallization of PMR-15, indicating that there must exist some kind of interaction between molecular chains of PMR-15 and those of PEK-C. The semi-IPN system of PMR-15/PEK-C blends exhibits good toughness. Two distinct microphases, interweaving at the phase boundaries, were found in the PMR-15/PEK-C 60/40 blend. The toughness effect of the blends is discussed in terms of the interface adhesion between the two distinct phases and the domain sizes of the phases. The relation between miscibility and toughness of the blends was investigated. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The blends of polyethersulfone and phenoxy were prepared by melt mixing in a Brabender-like apparatus. The specimens for measurements were made by compression molding and then were water-quenched at room temperature under pressure. The tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break and yield, density, thermal analysis, and dynamic mechanical properties were each measured. The dependence of tensile strength, tensile modulus, elongation at break and yield, and density on composition was obtained. The relationship between tensile modulus and elongation at break and yield and speed of the crosshead at different weight ratios of the blends is shown. The effects of composition and miscibility on the mechanical properties are discussed. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The effect of physical aging at 210 degrees C on the mechanical properties of phenolphthalein polyether sulfone (PES-C) and a PES-C/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PPS) blend, with 5% content of PPS, were studied using DMA, tensile experiments, an instrumented impact tester, and SEM observations. The blend shows good mechanical properties in comparison with the corresponding PES-C. The mechanical properties of both materials exhibit characteristics of physical aging, with only the aging rate of the blend relatively slower, which should be attributed to the constraint effect of PPS particles and the good interfacial adhesion. The morphology of the PPS phase in the blend did not change with aging time. The principal role of PPS particles is to induce crazes, which dissipate energy, under applied loading; thus, the blend shows good toughness. On the other hand, the multiple crazing mechanism depends on the molecular mobility or structural state of the matrix. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

1,4-Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride, 1,4-bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)benzene dianhydride, bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenoxy) sulfide dianhydride, bis (3,4-dicarboxyphenoxy)sulfide dianhydride, and 2,3,3',4'-tetracarboxy diphenyl sulfide dianhydride were synthesized from 3-chlorophthalic anhydride and 4-chlorophthalic anhydride. Bis(2,3-dicarboxyphenyl)sulfone and bis(3,4-dicarboxyphenyl) sulfone were obtained by the oxidation of the corresponding bis(dicarboxyphenyl)sulfide by hydrogen peroxide. The polyimides from the dianhydrides mentioned above and 4,4'-oxydianiline were prepared. The properties, such as dynamic mechanical behavior, thermooxidative stability, stress-strain behavior, chemical resistance, and permeability to some gases have been in investigated for the isomeric polyimides. The isothermal crystallization and melting behavior of the poly(epsilon-caprolactone) (PCL)/poly(ethylene oxide)(PEO) diblock copolymer has been studied by WAXD, SAXS, and DSC methods. Only the PCL block is crystallizable; the PEO block of weight fraction 20% cannot crystallize, although its corresponding homopolymer has strong crystallizability. The long period, amorphous layer, and crystalline lamella of the PCL/PEO block copolymer all increase with the rise in the crystallization temperature, and the thickness of the amorphous layer is much larger than that of crystalline lamella due to the existence of the PEO block in the amorphous region. The isothermal crystallization of the PCL/PEO block copolymer is investigated by using the theory of Turnbull and Fischer. It is found that the amorphous PEO block has a great influence on the nucleation of PCL block crystallization, and the extent of this influence depends on crystallization conditions, especially temperature. The outstanding characteristics are the phenomenon of the double melting peaks in the melting process of the PCL/PEO block copolymer after isothermal crystallization at different temperatures and the transformation of melting peaks from double peaks to a single peak with variations in the crystallization condition. They are related mainly to the existence of the PEO block bonding chemically with the PCL block. In summing up results of investigations into the crystallization and melting behavior of the PCL/PEO block copolymer, it is interesting to notice that when the PCL/PEO block copolymer crystallizes at three different crystallization temperatures, i.e., below 0 degrees C, between 0 and 35 degrees C, and above 35 degrees C, the variation of peak melting temperature is similar to that of overall crystallization rates in the process of isothermal crystallization. The results can be elucidated by the effect of the PEO block on the crystallization of the PCL block, especially its nucleation. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The conductivity mechanism for a carbon black (CB) filled high-density polyethylene (HDPE) compound was investigated in this work. From the experimental results obtained, it can be seen that the relation between electrical current density (J) and applied voltage across the sample (V) coincides with Simmons's equation (i.e., the electrical resistivity of the compound decreases with the applied voltage, especially at the critical voltage). The minimum electrical resistivity occurs near the glass transition temperature (T-g) of HDPE (198 K). It can be concluded that electron tunneling is an important mechanism and a dominant transport process in the HDPE/CB composite. A new model of carbon black dispersion in the matrix was established, and the resistivity was calculated by using percolation and quantum mechanical theories. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

The mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced phenolphthalein poly(ether ketone)/poly(phenylene sulfide) (PEK-C/PPS) composites have been studied. The morphologies of fracture surfaces were observed by scanning electron microscope. Blending a semicrystalline component, PPS, can improve markedly the mechanical properties of glass fiber-reinforced PEK-C composites. These results can be attributed to the improvement of fiber/matrix interfacial adhesion and higher fiber aspect ratio. (C) 1996 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.

This paper presents our work on the rheological properties of the solution of polyaniline (PAn) in N-methyl-2-pyrrolidone (NMP). The results indicate that the solution's non-Newtonian property becomes more prominent with the increase in solution concentrations exhibiting the behavior of pseudo-plastic fluid. Besides, there is a critical concentration C-v (around 0.06 g/ml), beyond which the viscosity of the PAn/NMP solution takes a sudden increase. with temperature rising, both the viscosity and the thixotropy of the solution decrease, implying that there exist physical cross-linking interactions between the molecular chains in the solution.

Flexible oxyethylene-ether was introduced into the aromatic copolyesters and copoly (ester-amide)s to reduce the melting point of resulting polymers. The melting point was greatly reduced to 200 degrees C or even lower in some cases, and the molecular weight was satisfactorily high as reflected by inherent viscosity. The polymers exhibited high thermal stability and good mechanical properties as determined by TGA and mechanical tests. The copolyester showed better crystallinity and liquid crystallinity than corresponding copoly (ester-amide)s with similar monomer composition as reflected by POM observation and WAXD study. The melting points for both copolyesters and copoly (ester-amide)s showed great dependence on the p-acetoxybenzoic acid (PAB) content in monomer composition and reached the lowest value when PAB was 29 mol%.

Pure X-ray diffraction profiles have been analysed for polyamide 1010 and PA1O1O-BMI system by means of multipeak fitting resolution of X-ray diffraction. The methods of variance and fourth moment have been applied to determine the particle size and strain values for the paracrystalline materials. The results indicated that both variance and fourth moment of X-ray diffraction line profile yielded approximately the same values of the particle size and the strain. The particle sizes of (100) reflection have been found to decrease with increasing BMI content, whereas the strain values increased.

An azo-group containing polybutadiene macroinitiator was prepared by Pinner synthesis and characterized by IR, NMR, GPC, viscosity and elemental measurements. The macroinitiator was further use to polymerize acrylamide (AAm) in benzene to form polybutadiene/polyacrylamide (PBD/PAAm) block copolymers. High conversion of AAm was obtained over a wide range of monomer/macroinitiator ratios. The PBD/PAAm block copolymers were found to have excellent solvent resistance.

The epitaxial crystallization behavior of high-density polyethylene on the boundary of highly oriented isotactic polypropylene (iPP) substrates has been investigated by means of atomic force microscopy (AFM) and transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained from AFM and TEM indicate that the epitaxial nucleation of HDPE on the highly oriented iPP substrates occurs earlier than that in the pure HDPE phase, i.e., homogeneous nucleation. Therefore the epitaxially grown HDPE lamellae can grow across the boundary of the iPP substrate into the HDPE spherulitic phase with the epitaxial orientation relationship remaining.

Photosensitive polyimide BTDA-3MPDA was modified by UV irradiation. The structure of UV-irradiated polyimides was investigated by FTIR and gel fraction measurements. The results showed that longer UV exposure time resulted in a higher extent of crosslinking. The gas permeabilities of hydrogen, oxygen and nitrogen through UV-irradiated polyimides were characterized in a temperature range from 30 degrees C to 90 degrees C. Photocrosslinking resulted in a sharp decline in gas permeability for hydrogen, oxygen, and nitrogen through polyimide in the initial stage of photocrosslinking. Then, as the crosslinked benzophenone percentage amounted to 28-38% for hydrogen, 17-31% for oxygen and 3-28% for nitrogen, the gas permeabilities showed another sharp decline. Gas permselectivity increased significantly with the progress of photocrosslinking, and it can be adjusted in a wide range by controlling the extent of crosslinking. Arrhenius plots of gas permeability for hydrogen and oxygen through UV-irradiated polyimides are straight lines; for nitrogen, however, change in the slope of the straight line is observed and activation energies for hydrogen and oxygen permeation show abrupt increases when crosslinked benzophenone percentage amounts to about 30%. UV-irradiated polyimides with simultaneous high gas permeability and permselectivity make them ideal candidate materials for gas separation. (C) 1995 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
