Like pages of a "natural coastal diary", successive layers of anoxic varved sediment in the central Santa Barbara Basin have been used by paleoceanographers to reconstruct aspects of past coastal climate. This report focuses on the end of the "Little Ice Age" (15th to 19th century) and on the beginning of this century, a period known to encompass extreme climate excursions and weather events in the Santa Barbara Basin and other parts of Southern California. El Niño events are known to disrupt Southern California's coastal ecosystems and to cause anomalous weather conditions, but El Niño events in Southern California before 1990 have been largely undocumented.

An account and review of the simple methods for determining the operational parameters of fishing gear, underwater, such a tilt of otter boards (outwards or inwards, forwards or afterwards), vertical height of net, its horizontal spread, angle of divergence at bosom, spread between wing tips, angle of inclination of danlenos, butterfly, slope of legs and sweep-line has been given. The relationship of distance between the otter boards spread and the vertical height of net has been obtained as generally linear. The possibilities of regulating the vertical height of net (dependent variate) and spread of otter boards (independent variate) for increasing the fishing efficiency has been discussed. The angle of attack of oval shaped otter boards used during the operations still remain undetermined, however, it has been explained how the best angle of attack for increasing the efficiency of gear can be obtained by regulating the ratio of depth to warp for a given net. The inadequacy of the mere indices of catch per hour of trawling in comparing the relative efficiency of trawls in gear research studies has been indicated. The importance of estimating the operational parameters and its application to commercial fisheries depending upon the distribution pattern of fish and in gear research has been discussed. The efficiency of the jelly bottle method has been compared statistically with the observations made on the trawl gear underwater with instruments.

This note reports the results of the 1964 Pearl Bank Survey. These surveys are conducted annually by the Fisheries Department to assess the possibility of a fishery; for detailed accounts of past surveys see Sivalingam (1955, 1958) who has also provided (1962) a complete list of all literature on the Ceylon Pearl Banks. The 1964 survey was carried out with the Department's m. v. "North Star" (42') and m. v. "Seer" (45') and a 25' mechanised fishing boat as tender, between the 17th and 29th of April.

A pond trail on pearl culture in freshwater mussels, Lamellidens marginalis was carried out for one year in an artificial perennial pond. Four types of foreign particles of indigenous sources, sand, stone, fish eyeball and beads of artificial pearl nucleus were used as nucleus for pearl production. Among the nuclei inserted mussel highest survival rate (72%) was recorded for stone and lowest survival rate (50%) for artificial pearl by nucleus implantation. Highest pearl production rate (%) was recorded for the insertion of stone and lowest for the sand. All nuclei inserted mussel produced pearl accept the mussel which was inserted beads of pearl nucleus for pearl formation. Growth rate (length and weight) was found higher for uninserted mussel than nuclei inserted mussels.

Centrifuge tests were carried out to determine the effect of 5 different water-soluble chemicals on a thin consolidated disc of clay. The evolution of changes in the clay permeability with time was investigated and other structural changes due to chemical attack were monitored. The findings presented here demonstrate that the permeability of the clay appear to be generally related to the polarity of the chemicals and the dielectric constant, with the exception of Butanol. In the case of Butanol at low flow rate and low stress level, the action of the chemical caused the clay to crack, with a consequent large increase in flow.

Physical, chemical and organoleptic characteristics of dried and smoked barracuda (Sphyraena spp.) during storage at ambient temperature are reported. Initial increase in total volatile basic nitrogen (TVBN) content after drying as well as smoking did not have any significant effect on the organoleptic qualities of the products. Smoking was found effective in delaying the onset of fungal attack and also in improving the organoleptic qualities.

This paper investigates the interaction of solitary waves (representative of tsunamis) with idealized flat-topped conical islands. The investigation is based on simulations produced by a numerical model that solves the two-dimensional Boussinesq-type equations of Madsen and Sørensen using a total variation diminishing Lax-Wendroff scheme. After verification against published laboratory data on solitary wave run-up at a single island, the numerical model is applied to study the maximum run-up at a pair of identical conical islands located at different spacings apart for various angles of wave attack. The predicted results indicate that the maximum run-up can be attenuated or enhanced according to the position of the second island because of wave refraction, diffraction, and reflection. It is also observed that the local wave height and hence run-up can be amplified at certain gap spacing between the islands, owing to the interference between the incident waves and the reflected waves between islands. © 2012 American Society of Mechanical Engineers.

Annual cycle of gonad development and spawning in pearl oyster, Pinctada ficata (Gould) in Nakhiloo, Northeast Persian Gulf, was investigated over two years from August 1994 to June 1996. Gonadal condition was assessed by staging criteria to describe gametogenic development from histological preparations of randomly collected individuals of all sizes. A bimodal gametogenic pattern with summer and autumn spawning periods was evident throughout the study. Gametogensis commenced in November-December which proceeded by major gonadal maturation during February-April. Summer spawning was observed from April to July with major spawning at the latter end. During spawning peak in July, low level of gametogensis was noticed. Gametogenic activity was picked up again in August-September which proceeded by autumn spawning from September to December. Towards the end of spawning season, incidence of gonadal inactivation increased. Minimum level of gonadal activity was observed in November. Temperature regime appears to have influential role in regulation of gametogenic and spawning processes. Gonadal development and spawning trends were similar in both sexes. P. radiaata was found to be protandrous hermaphrodite which matured as a male at shell height greater than 20 mm. Biseivality was uncommon and the sex ratio was about 1:1. Ultrastructure of gametes were investigated in the Pictada fucata (Gould). "Auxiliary cells" closely accociated with developing oocytes were observed. Each oocyte seems to be associated with only one secretory cell. which is characterized by an abundant rough endoplasmic reticulum at the onset of vitellogenesis. Contact between this cell and a developing oocytes is maintained by a desmosome-like junction which can be observed when the vitelline coat is formed. these "auxiliary or nursing cells" seem to play a tropic role in vitellogenesis, and may be involved in the formation of the vitelline coat of the oocytes. Oocytic degeneration is observed in this species, it is a continuous phenomenon of varing intensity throughout the year. The ultrastructural changes resulting in lysis of the oocyte are described. Mature spermatozoa consist of a broad, cap-shaped acrosomal vesicle, subacrosomal material, a round nucleus, two triplet substructure centrioles surrounded by four spherical mitochondria, and a flagellum anchored to the distal centriole and plasma membrane. Spermatozoa of Plucata closley resemble to those of other investigated Pteriidae. Changes in proximate composition of soft tissue and gonadal cycle of Pinctada fucata was studied. Mobilization and utilization of stored reserves are apparent during gametogenesis and gonadal maturation. Protein reserves are utilized during spermatogenesis while reserved carbohydrates form the main energy donor in oogenesis. The role of lipid as am.: energy reserve is second to that of carbohydrate.

This paper describes the implementation of the Boussinesq-type model and extends its application to the tsunami wave runup on the clustered islands (multiple adjacent conical islands), in turn, an extensively validated two-dimensional Boussinesq-type model is employed to examine the interaction between a propagating solitary wave and multiple idealised conical islands, with particular emphasis on a combination effect of two adjustable parameters for spacing interval/diameter ratio between the adjacent conical islands, S/D, and the rotating angle of the structural configuration,θ on maximum soliton runup heights. An extensive parameter study concerning the combination effect of alteringθ and S/D on the maximum soliton runup with the multi-conical islands is subsequently carried out and the distributions of the maximum runup heights on each conical island are obtained and compared for the twin-island cases. The worst case study is performed for each case in respect of the enhancement in the maximum wave runup heights by the multi-conical islands. It is found that the nonlinear wave diffraction, reflection and refraction play a significant role in varying the maximum soliton runup heights on multiconical islands. The comparatively large maximum soliton runups are generally predicted for the merged and bottom mounted clusteredislands. Furthermore, the joints of the clustered-merged islands are demonstrated to suffer the most of the tsunami wave attack. The conical islands that position in the shadow regions behind the surrounding islands are found to withstand relatively less extreme wave impact. Although, these numerical investigations are considerable simplifications of the multi conical islands, they give a critical insight into certain important hydrodynamic characteristics of the interaction between an extreme wave event and a group of clustered conical islands, and thus providing a useful engineering guidance for extreme wave mitigation and coastal development. Aerodynamic shape optimisation is being increasingly utilised as a design tool in the aerospace industry. In order to provide accurate results, design optimisation methods rely on the accuracy of the underlying CFD methods applied to obtain aerodynamic forces for a given configuration. Previous studies of the authors have highlighted that the variation of the order of accuracy of the CFD solver with a fixed turbulence model affects the resulting optimised airfoil shape for a single element airfoil. The accuracy of the underlying CFD model is even more relevant in the context of high-lift configurations where an accurate prediction of flow is challenging due to the complex flow physics involving transition and flow separation phenomena. This paper explores the effect of the fidelity of CFD results for a range of turbulence models within the context of the computational design of aircraft configurations. The NLR7301 multi-element airfoil (main wing and flap) is selected as the baseline configuration, because of the wealth of experimental an computational results available for this configuration. An initial validation study is conducted in order to establish optimal mesh parameters. A bi-objective shape optimisation problem is then formulated, by trying to reveal the trade-off between lift and drag coefficients at high angles of attack. Optimisation of the airfoil shape is performed with Spalart-Allmaras, k - ω SST and k - o realisable models. The results indicate that there is consistent and complementary impact to the optimum level achieved from all the three different turbulence models considered in the presented case study. Without identifying particular superiority of any of the turbu- lence models, we can say though that each of them expressed favourable influence towards different optimality routes. These observations lead to the exploration of new avenues for future research. © 2012 AIAA.

Abstract A theoretical model is developed for the sound scattered when a sound wave is incident on a cambered aerofoil at non-zero angle of attack. The model is based on the linearization of the Euler equations about a steady subsonic flow, and is an adaptation of previous work which considered incident vortical disturbances. Only high-frequency sound waves are considered. The aerofoil thickness, camber and angle of attack are restricted such that the steady flow past the aerofoil is a small perturbation to a uniform flow. The singular perturbation analysis identifies asymptotic regions around the aerofoil; local 'inner' regions, which scale on the incident wavelength, at the leading and trailing edges of the aerofoil; Fresnel regions emanating from the leading and trailing edges of the aerofoil due to the coalescence of singularities and points of stationary phase; a wake transition region downstream of the aerofoil leading and trailing edge; and an outer region far from the aerofoil and wake. An acoustic boundary layer on the aerofoil surface and within the transition region accounts for the effects of curvature. The final result is a uniformly-valid solution for the far-field sound; the effects of angle of attack, camber and thickness are investigated. © 2013 Cambridge University Press.
