Presented is a thermodynamic feasibility analysis of extracting base metal chlorides fiom low-grade,multimetallic oxide ores using CaClz as a chlorinating agent in the presence of SOz undoz. The oxides react to form corresponding chlorides, while CaClz is converted to CaS04. The Ellingham diagram is usedfor comparing the standard Gibbs' fiee energy chanlpef or the su(fation-chlorinationr eaction of a large number of oxides. Except for alumina, silica and chromia, most of the other metal oxides will be converted to their respective chlorides. The volatile chlorides can be condensed, and the chlorides present in the condensed state can be leached. A process is proposed that uses a nontoxic chlorinating agent and gives an eficient sepurutiort cftlte metallic vuluesfr.om the garlgue.

This paper presents the results of a study on the effect of alumina nano-fillers on electrical tree growth in epoxy insulation. Treeing experiments were conducted at a fixed ac voltage of 15 kV, 50 Hz on unfilled epoxy samples as well as epoxy nanocomposites with different loadings of alumina nano-fillers. Time for tree inception as well as tree growth patterns were studied. The results show that there is a significant improvement in tree initiation time with the increase in nano-filler loading. Different tree growth patterns as well as slower tree growth with increasing filler loadings were observed in epoxy nanocomposites. The nature of the tree channel and the elemental composition of the material on the inner lining of the tree channels have been studied using SEM imaging and EDAX analysis respectively of the cut section of the tree channels. It has been shown that the type of bonding at the interface has an influence on the electrical tree growth pattern. The nature of the bonding at the interface between the epoxy and the nano-filler has been studied using FTIR spectrometry. Finally the influence of the interface on tree growth phenomena in nanocomposites has been explained by a physical model.

The present article demonstrates how the stiffness, hardness as well as the cellular response of bioinert high-density polyethylene (HDPE) can be significantly improved with combined addition of both bioinert and bioactive ceramic fillers. For this purpose, different amounts of hydroxyapatite and alumina, limited to a total of 40 wt %, have been incorporated in HDPE matrix. An important step in composite fabrication was to select appropriate solvent and optimal addition of coupling agent (CA). In case of chemically coupled composites, 2% Titanium IV, 2-propanolato, tris iso-octadecanoato-O was used as a CA. All the hybrid composites, except monolithic HDPE, were fabricated under optimized compression molding condition (140 degrees C, 0.75 h, 10 MPa pressure). The compression molded composites were characterized, using X-ray diffraction, Fourier transformed infrared spectroscopy, and scanning electron microscopy. Importantly, in vitro cell culture and cell viability study (MTT) using L929 fibroblast and SaOS2 osteoblast-like cells confirmed good cytocompatibility properties of the developed hybrid composites. In order to improve the tracking and erosion performance of outdoor polymeric silicone rubber (SR) insulators used in HV power transmission lines, micron sized inorganic fillers are usually added to the base SR matrix. In addition, insulators used in high voltage dc transmission lines are designed to have increased creepage distance to mitigate the tracking and erosion problems. ASTM D2303 standard gives a procedure for finding the tracking and erosion resistance of outdoor polymeric insulator weathershed material samples under laboratory conditions for ac voltages. In this paper, inclined plane (IP) tracking and erosion tests similar to ASTM D2303 were conducted under both positive and negative dc voltages for silicone rubber samples filled with micron and nano sized particles to understand the phenomena occurring during such tests. Micron sized Alumina Trihydrate (ATH) and nano sized alumina fillers were added to silicone rubber matrix to improve the resistance to tracking and erosion. The leakage current during the tests and the eroded mass at the end of the tests were monitored. Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM) and Energy dispersive Xray (EDX) studies were conducted to understand the filler dispersion and the changes in surface morphology in both nanocomposite and microcomposite samples. The results suggest that nanocomposites performed better than microcomposites even for a small filler loading (4%) for both positive and negative dc stresses. It was also seen that the tracking and erosion performance of silicone rubber is better under negative dc as compared to positive dc voltage. EDX studies showed migration of different ions onto the surface of the sample during the IP test under positive dc which has led to an inferior performance as compared to the performance under negative dc.

Noble metal ions like Pt(IV) and Pd(II) were impregnated on gamma-alumina and aerosol 300 silica surfaces. Reduction of these ions using ammonia borane in the solid state resulted in the formation of the respective metal nanoparticles embedded in BNHx polymer which is dispersed on the oxide support. Removal of the BNH polymer was accomplished by washing the samples repeatedly with methanol. In this process the polymer undergoes solvolysis to release H-2 accompanied by the formation of ammonium methoxy borate salt, which has been removed by repeated methanol washings. As a result, metal nanoparticles well dispersed on gamma-alumina and aerosol 300 silica were obtained. These samples have been characterized by a combination of techniques, including electron microscopy, powder X-ray diffraction, NMR spectroscopy and surface area analyser.

A bacterium Bacillus polymyxa was found to be capable of selective removal of calcium and iron from bauxite. The bioleached residue was found to be enriched in its alumina content with insignificant amounts of iron and calcium as impurities. The developed bio- process was found to be capable of producing a bauxite product which meets the specifica- tions as a raw material for the manufacture of alumina based ceramics and refractories. The role of bacterial cells and metabolic products in the selective dissolution of calcium (present as calcite) and iron (present as hematite and goethite) from bauxite was assessed and possi- ble mechanisms illustrated. The effect of different parameters such as sucrose concentra- tion, pH, pulp density and time on selective biodissolution was studied. It was observed that periodic decantation and replenishment of the leach medium was beneficial in improving the dissolution kinetics. Calcium removal involves chelation with bacterial exopolysaccha- tides and acidolysis by organic acid generation. Hematite could be solubilized through a reductive dissolution mechanism.

Zinc-aluminium cast alloys (ZA alloys) exhibit good castability and mechanical properties but these alloys lack creep resistance and high temperature stability. One solution to improve these properties is to reinforce with ceramic particles or fibres, to result in MMCs. MMCs can be produced using casting technique involving infiltration. A systematic investigation was taken and this paper discusses the salient findings of the study on the ZA-27 alloy based MMCs produced through squeeze casting. (Reinforcing fibers: SAFFIL (chopped alumina) or mullite.)

In macroscopic and even microscopic structural elements, surface effects can be neglected and classical theories are sufficient. As the structural size decreases towards the nanoscale regime, the surface-to-bulk energy ratio increases and surface effects must be taken into account. In the present work, the terahertz wave dispersion characteristics of a nanotube are studied with consideration of the surface effects as well as the non-local small scale effects. Non-local elasticity theory is used to derive the general governing differential equation based on equilibrium approach to include those scale effects. Scale and surface property dependent wave characteristic equations are obtained via spectral analysis. For the present study the material properties of an anodic alumina nanotube with crystallographic of < 111 > direction are considered. The present analysis shows that the effect of surface properties (surface integrated residual stress and surface integrated modulus) on the flexural wave characteristics of anodic nanotubes are more significant. It has been found that the flexural wavenumbers with surface effects are high as compared to that without surface effects. It has also been shown that, with consideration of surface effects the flexural wavenumbers are under compressive nature. The effect of the small scale and the size of the nanotube on wave dispersion properties are also captured in the present work. (C) 2012 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

A detailed study on the removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from the exhaust of a stationary diesel engine was carried out using nonthermal-plasma (pulsed electrical-discharge plasma)-promoted catalytic process. In this paper, the filtered exhaust from the diesel engine is made to pass through a combination of nonthermal plasma reactor and a catalytic reactor connected in series. This combination is referred to as cascade. Two types of cascaded systems were studied. In one type, the plasma treating filtered exhaust was cascaded with a reduction catalyst V2O5/TiO2 using ammonia as reducing agent, and in the other type, the plasma treating filtered exhaust was cascaded with activated-alumina catalyst without any additive. Improved NOx-removal performance of both the cascaded processes and the role of nonthermal plasma in promoting catalysis are explained. Along with the NOx, total hydrocarbon and aldehydes were also removed. Furthermore, experiments were conducted at different temperatures and engine-loading conditions.

This paper proposes a compact electric discharge plasma source for controlling NOX emission in diesel engine exhaust. Boost converter is used to boost to solar powered battery voltage to 24V, further an automobile ignition coil was used to generate the high voltage pulse using fly-back topology. This design is aimed at retrofitting the existing catalytic converters with pulse assisted cleaning technique. In this paper we bring out a relative comparison of discharge plasma and plasma-adsorbent process at different gas flow rates. Activated alumina was used as adsorbent. The main emphasis is laid on the development of a compact pulse source from 12V battery, which is powered by the solar, for the removal of NOX from the filtered diesel engine exhaust.

A detailed study on the removal of oxides of nitrogen (NOx) from the filtered/unfiltered exhaust of a stationary diesel engine was carried out using non-thermal plasma (pulsed electrical discharge plasma) process and cascaded processes namely plasma- adsorbent and plasma-catalyst processes. The superior performance of discharge plasma with regard to NOx removal, energy consumption and formation of by-products in unfiltered exhaust environment is identified. In the cascaded plasma-adsorbent process, the plasma was cascaded with adsorbents (MS13X/Activated alumina/Activated charcoal). The cascaded process treating unfiltered exhaust exhibits a very high NOx removal compared to the individual processes and further, the cascaded process gives almost the same NOx removal efficiency irrespective of type of adsorbent used. In the cascaded plasma- catalyst process, the plasma was cascaded with activated alumina catalyst at high temperature. The synergy effect and improved performance of the cascaded process are explained. Further, experiments were conducted at room temperature as well as at higher temperatures.

Treeing in low density polyethylene (LDPE) filled with alumina nanocomposite as well as unfilled LDPE samples stressed with 50 Hz ac voltage has been studied. The tree inception voltage was monitored for various samples with different nano-filler loadings and it is seen that there is an increase in tree inception voltage with filler loading in LDPE. Treeing pattern and tree growth duration for unfilled and nano-filled LDPE samples have also been studied. Different tree growth patterns as well as a slower tree growth with increase in filler loading in LDPE nanocomposites were observed. The observed slow propagation of tree growth with filler loading is attributed to the changes in the polymer crystalline morphology induced by the presence of nano-particles and the greater ability of the nanoparticles to resist discharge growth. SEM studies carried out to determine the morphology of unfilled and nano-filled LDPE showed an increase in lamellae packing in LDPE nanocomposites and this increased lamellar density leads to a reduction in the tree propagation rate. Partial discharge activities were also monitored during the electrical tree growth in both the unfilled and the nano-filled LDPE samples and were found to be significantly different. PD magnitude and the number of PD pulses per cycle were found to be lower with electrical tree growth duration in LDPE nanocomposites as compared to unfilled LDPE. The same trend was seen with increased filler loading also.

Alumina (Al2O3) thin films were sputter deposited over well-cleaned glass and Si < 100 > substrates by DC reactive magnetron sputtering under various oxygen gas pressures and sputtering powers. The composition of the films was analyzed by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and an optimal O/Al atomic ratio of 1.59 was obtained at a reactive gas pressure of 0.03 Pa and sputtering power of 70 W. X-ray diffraction results revealed that the films were amorphous until 550 degrees C. The surface morphology of the films was studied using scanning electron microscopy and the as-deposited films were found to be smooth. The topography of the as-deposited and annealed films was analyzed by atomic force microscopy and a progressive increase in the rms roughness of the films from 3.2 nm to 4.53 nm was also observed with increase in the annealing temperature. Al-Al2O3-Al thin film capacitors were then fabricated on glass substrates to study the effect of temperature and frequency on the dielectric property of the films. Temperature coefficient of capacitance. AC conductivity and activation energy were determined and the results are discussed. (C) 2011 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

The scale effects show that the wavenumbers of the flexural wave become highly non-linear and tend to infinite at certain frequency. After that frequency the wave will not propagate and the corresponding wave velocities tend to zero at that frequency (escape frequency).
