Assisted by a mechanical alloying and high-pressure technique, a new W4Mg intermetallic was formed. W4Mg amorphous mixture was obtained by mechanically alloying the pure metal powder mixtures at designated composition for 20 h. A new compound was found after the subsequent high-pressure and high-temperature treatment. W4Mg intermetallic was identified as a cubic structure and the lattice parameter was a=0.4150 nm. The synthesis mechanism is also discussed in this paper.

The phase-transformation in sol-gel preparation of barium hexaferrite and the formation of barium hexaferrite doped with La3+ Were studied by chemical phase analysis, X-ray diffraction and infrared spectrometry analysis. The experimental results show that phase transformation reactions of FeCO3, Fe2O3 and BaFe2O4, barium hexaferrite and gamma-Fe2O3 take place in the heat treatment of gel. While the doping lanthanide ion replace barium ion, an equivalent quantity of Fe3+ are reduced to Fe2+ to maintain the charge equilibrium.

The compositions of the extracted complexes of La, Gd, Er and Y with sec-octyl-phenoxy acetic acid in heptane and the related apparent extraction equilibrium constants K-M were determined using two-phase titration technique. The stoichiometric compounds for La, Gd, Er and Y should be LaA(3) . 2.5HA, GdA(3) . 3HA, ErA(3) . 3.1HA and YA(3) . 4.3HA respectively. And their pK(M) are 3.43, 3.46, 3.08 and 2.58 respectively.

The Yttrium(III) extraction kinetics and mechanism with secnonylphonoxy acetic acid (CA-100) were investigated by a constant interfacial cell with laminar flow. The studies of interfacial tension and solubility of extractant and effects of the stirring rate, temperature, specific interfacial area and species concentration on the extraction rate showed that the extraction regime was dependent on the extraction conditions and the most probable reaction zone was at the liquid-liquid interface. The rate equation of extracting yttrium by CA-100 in heptane was Rf = k[Y3+]((a))[H(2)A(2)]((o))(0.88)[H+]((a))(-1.08).

The plateau modulus of polyphenylquinoxaline (PPQ-E) films has been obtained by from their dynamic mechanical properties curves. Using these data, the entanglement density of PPQ-E films, 2.37 X 10(26) m(-3) Or 0.39mmol/cm(3),has been estimated. The deformation mechanism of polyphenylquinoxaline (crazing mechanism,or shear yielding mechanism, or both), can be predicted according to entanglement density values. The changes in morphology of PPQ-E films during tensile deformation have been observed by Polarized Light Microscope. The result shows that crazing first appears in the tensile process, then shear yielding appears. It needs to point out that the craze is terminated by micro-shear band and the direction of craze in shear band is also changed,which prevents the craze growth into crack and avoid the failure of material. This result is in accordance with the prediction on the basis of the entanglement density data. The morphology and structure of crazes in PPB-E thin film have been determined by TEM. The craze morphology of PPQ-E is mainly fibril craze consisting of micro-fibrils and micro-voids,the interface between bulk and craze is distinct. Multiply crazes, blunting of craze tip and shear deformation zone are also observed. This result reflects the accordance of entanglement density and the morphology and structure of crazes.

The catalytic active phase (CAP) of a novel liquid catalyst for isobutane alkylation with butenes was investigated, the composition of the CAP was analysized, The components of the catalytic active phase were separated and examined by the methods of FTIR, UV and NMR etc., On the basis of these results, a reaction mechanism based on the formation of protonated heteropolyacid as an intial stage in the isobutane alkylation with butenes was postulated, which is in agreement with the experimental results.

In this work, chemical structures and molecular parameters of grafted materials of PP-g-MAH prepared by melt reactive extrusion were studied by using electrospray ionization-mass spectrometer and gel permeation chromatography. It was found that the initial radicals, due to homolitic scission of dicumyl peroxide could be combined with maleic anhydride (MAH) monomers as well as polypropylene (PP) molecular chains. The homopolymerization of MAH cannot occur and the MAH radicals undergo a dismutational reaction under the processing condition (180-190 degreesC). A modified mechanism of melt grafting MAH onto PP has been proposed tentatively on the basis of our experimental results and other experimental findings published in the literature. This paper reports a new observation of the abnormal reduction of Eu3+ --> Eu2+ in Sr2B5O9Cl when prepared in air at high temperature. A model based on the nature of substitution defects is proposed to explain this abnormal reduction. Electrons, which reduced the Eu3+ ions, are created by the substitution of cations first and then transferred to the target Eu3+ ions via tetrahedral berate anion groups. Codoping experiments are designed and performed. The results of these experiments support the model proposed. (C) 1999 Academic Press.

The compatibilizing effects of the compatibilizer, ethylene-acrylic acid random copolymer (EAA), on linear low density polyethylene (LLDPE)/poly(ethylene oxide) (PEO) blends and the mechanism of compatibilization of the blends have been studied. Morphology and microstructures as characterized by SEM, DMA, DSC and IR show that EAA can act as an effective compatibilizer, and the mechanism of compatibilization is due to the compatibility of amorphous phases between EAA and LLDPE, and intermolecular interaction between the carboxylic groups in EAA. and the ethereal oxygens in PEG.

A selenium-containing catalytic antibody (Se-4A4), prepared by converting reactive serine residues of a monoclonal antibody (4A4) raised against a GSH derivative into selenocysteines, acts as a mimic of cytosolic glutathione peroxidase (cGPX). To clarify the mechanism of action of this catalytic antibody, detailed studies on kinetic behaviour and biological activity were carried out. A rate of acceleration (k(cat)/K-m/k(uncat)) 10(7)-fold that of the uncatalytic reaction is observed. Under similar conditions, the turnover number (k(cat)) of Se-4A4 is 42% of that of the natural rabbit liver cGPX. The Se-4A4 reaction involves a Ping Pong mechanism, which is the same as that of the natural cGPX. The selenocysteine residue is located in the binding site of the antibody and is shown to be crucial for this activity. Of the thiol compounds tested, only GSH is able to serve as substrate for Se-4A4. It was demonstrated, using the free-radical-damage system (hypoxanthine/xanthine oxidase) of cardiac mitochondria, that Se-4A4 can protect mitochondria from free-radical damage at least 10(4)-fold more effectively than the natural cGPX.

Blends of HDPE in more LDPE, with appropriate heat treatment, produce a dispersion of separate entities of HDPE in a matrix of LDPE. The system offered an especially favourable means of studying the deformation of melt-crystallized lamellae. It has been found that sheaf-like spherulites are transformed under tensile deformation into hourglass shapes i.e. a double cone aligned along the drawing direction with origin in the center of the object. This is a consequence of different modes of deformation according to the relation of an individual lamella to the tensile axis. The work shows that the lamellae have not undergone melting and recrystallization in the deformation process at room temperature.

By using the chemical bond theory of dielectric description and electronic structure of 3d elements, the mechanism of nephelauxetic effect is studied, and the main factors responsible for this effect are identified. These are: the covalency of chemical bond, polarizabilities of ligand bond volume for the host and the valence and spin state of the center ion. The crystal structure and mechanism of the title molecule are described. This crystal is orthorhombic, belonging to space group PC21/B with a=1,002 1(2) nm, b=1.483 0(3) nm, c=2.173 6(4) nm, V=3.230 39(2) nm(3), Z=2, D-c=1.80 g/cm(3), R=0.069 3. The structure was solved by direct method. The tin atom of the title compound exists in two distorted-trigonal-bipyramidal geometry, defined by two carbon, one bromide, one chloride and one oxygen atoms leading to a five-membered chelate ring. In the structure, the five-membered ring containing the intermolecular O-->Sn has a half chair conformation.

The thermosetting polyimide PMR-I5 and its blends with thermoplastic polyimides have been studied by dynamic mechanical analysis. The results obtained indicate that the level of beta relaxations in PMR-15 are increased with an increase in cross-linking density. This phenomenon is interpreted as a change of chemical structure during the cross-linking process. Addition of thermoplastic polyimide makes the magnitude of beta relaxations increase when PMR-15 is the major component. This might be due to the strong intermolecular charge-transfer interaction between PI and PI or PMR-15 and PMR-15 molecular chains being partly replaced by the weak intermolecular interaction between PI and PMR-15 in PMR-15/PI blends, resulting in some phenylene rings or imide groups in PIs and PMR-15 chains being able to participate in beta relaxation. However, this increment in beta relaxation magnitude can be reduced by heat treatment of the sample, as a result of phase separation. Hence, it is concluded that the beta relaxation magnitude is determined by the number of groups which can participate in relaxation per unit length, i.e. the magnitude of beta relaxation increases with decreasing interaction between the molecular chains. Rare earth complexes with phenylacetic acid (LnL(3) . nH(2)O, Ln is Ce, Nd, Pr, Ho, Er, Yb and Y, L is phenylacetate, n = 1-2) were prepared and characterized by elemental analysis, IR spectroscopy, chemical analysis, and X-ray crystal structure. The mechanism of thermal decomposition of the complexes was studied by means of TG-DTG, DTA and DSC. The activation energy and enthalpy change for the dehydration and melting processes were determined.
