Dinocyst assemblages of site HM52-43

Past sea-surface conditions over the northern North Atlantic during the last glacial maximum were examined from the study of 61 deep-sea cores. The last glacial maximum time slice studied here corresponds to an interval between Heinrich layers H2 and H1, and spanning about 20-16 ka on a 14C time scale. Transfer functions based on dinocyst assemblages were used to reconstruct sea-surface temperature, salinity, and sea-ice cover. The results illustrate extensive sea-ice cover along the eastern Canadian margins and sea-ice spreading, only during winter, over most of the northern North Atlantic. On the whole, much colder winter prevailed, despite relatively mild conditions in August (10-15°C at most offshore sites), thus suggesting a larger seasonal contrast of temperatures than today. Lower salinity than at present is reconstructed, especially along the eastern Canadian and Scandinavian margins, likely because of meltwater supply from the surrounding ice sheets. These reconstructions contrast with those established by CLIMAP on the basis of planktonic foraminifera. These differences are discussed with reference to the stratigraphical frame of the last glacial maximum, which was not the coldest phase of the last glacial stage. The respective significance of dinocyst and foraminifer records is also examined in terms of the thermohaline characteristics of surface waters and the vertical structure of upper water masses, which was apparently much more stratified than at present in the northern North Atlantic, thus preventing deep-water formation.

Stealth Visor for the Duke of Wellington Project HATWALK The 2012 Cultural Olympiad would not have been representative of London's creative industries without fashion design. Sponsored by the Mayor of London brought milliners to organise an alternative to the catwalk format , the designers brought together a Hatwalk, uniting landmark heritage statues, classical and modern, to be crowned with a new bespoke design piece each. Together forming a pedestrian navigation through the Jubilee city, the hats also invited twenty one milliners to consider the specificity of working for the great outdoors. Rigorously tested in wind tunnel laboratory to withstand hurricane wind speeds and squally shows the designs aim to bring the 'exclusive' culture of fashion accessories to the inclusive culture of international festival. Working with new technologies of engineering, such as laser measuring tools, and crane for assemblage and fitting, McLean brings new meaning to the familiar figures of national public authority. Since the storming of the Bastille in revolutionary France it has been traditional for the new order to symbolize change through attacking public statuary. In a similar vein, Hatwalk, invites spectators to reconsider the relationship between distant and lofty personages of power and the sartorial insignia through which their power is signified. Crowned with a revolutionary red ' large plexi punk neon number' the Duke of Wellington, at Wellington arch is the first in the Hatwalk exhibition. The originality of this research consists in the effects of surprise and Brechtian 'de familiarisation' resulting from the unexpected. The effects of this structural carnivalesque inversion of authorities can involve a range of reactions from the disdain of the offended to the laughter and pleasure of the surprised. This strategy of bringing the ludic element of play to the formalised authority of legitimised power is also signified through the conscious use of materials and colour in a monochrome and uniform culture of statuary. Here the difference in materials and visible surface of the design signifies the differences that need to be included within a socio political order before it may takes its place in history as being representative of the people it is entrusted to lead. This research output continues the work that led to the Hat Anthology exhibition (output 1), the Fifty Hats that Changed the World (output 2), the Jamaican Olympic team headwear design ( output 4), and is continued in the design, merchandise, accessories and avant garde artefacts of the House of Flora ( see website). The iterative process of the research brings innovation within continuity to McLean's work. It is difficult to theorise the 'rigour' that is undeniably present in a creative design praxis except in that McLean;s research outputs are always surprising and unexpected.

The Participation of Townspeople Making Music in Public Events in the Low Countries in the Fifteenth Century

Musicians, rhetoricians and crossbowmen, all of them employed by the city of Brussels, acted, sang and played instruments during the "Ommegang" procession in the 15th century in the main square, some of them during other processions, too. In Bruges, instrumentalists and singers took part in the representation of biblical scenes on street corners, which were part of the entry of Philip III the Good, Duke of Burgundy, into the city around the year 1440. The members of the clergy who knew music sang plainchant in all of these three roles, and independent musicians probably participated, too, even though the documents don't name them or describe their function. Except for the disabled, who marched in a procession on their own, the "common people" were only spectators of these events, which were planned in advance. The evidence that remains indicates that the voices of the "common people" remained hidden in these events, which were intended to promote civic unity.

What Are Effective Program Characteristics of Self-Management Interventions in Patients With Heart Failure? : An Individual Patient Data Meta-analysis

Background To identify those characteristics of self-management interventions in patients with heart failure (HF) that are effective in influencing health-related quality of life, mortality, and hospitalizations. Methods and Results Randomized trials on self-management interventions conducted between January 1985 and June 2013 were identified and individual patient data were requested for meta-analysis. Generalized mixed effects models and Cox proportional hazard models including frailty terms were used to assess the relation between characteristics of interventions and health-related outcomes. Twenty randomized trials (5624 patients) were included. Longer intervention duration reduced mortality risk (hazard ratio 0.99, 95% confidence interval [CI] 0.97–0.999 per month increase in duration), risk of HF-related hospitalization (hazard ratio 0.98, 95% CI 0.96–0.99), and HF-related hospitalization at 6 months (risk ratio 0.96, 95% CI 0.92–0.995). Although results were not consistent across outcomes, interventions comprising standardized training of interventionists, peer contact, log keeping, or goal-setting skills appeared less effective than interventions without these characteristics. Conclusion No specific program characteristics were consistently associated with better effects of self-management interventions, but longer duration seemed to improve the effect of self-management interventions on several outcomes. Future research using factorial trial designs and process evaluations is needed to understand the working mechanism of specific program characteristics of self-management interventions in HF patients.

This pamphlet is a reprint (with extensive rev1s10n and added material) of a pamphlet prepared under the auspices of this department by interested workers in the area of physical education, and printed and distributed by the Iowa State Teachers Association.Mr. Louis E. Hutto, then Supervisor of Physical Education in the Des Moines school system, served as chairman of the original committee of three. Miss Monica R. Wild, Head of the Department of Physical Education for Women in Iowa State Teachers College, and Miss Doris E. White, of her staff, were the other members. These latter two, recently appointed as a Committee on Revision, have rewritten and enlarged the pamphlet, while retaining the plan of the earlier edition. Teachers of physical education in Iowa, this department, and all interested in the subject feel a debt of gratitude for the painstaking and efficient service rendered by these devoted workers. This debt I am most happy to acknowledge.

Hintakartelli toistettuna pelinä: teoriasta pääkaupunkiseudun bensiinin vähittäismyyntimarkkinoille

Tutkielman tarkoituksena oli soveltaa toistetun pelin teoria- ja empiriapohjaa suomalaiseen tutkimusaineistoon. Kartellin toimintadynamiikka on mallinnettu peliteorian osa-alueen, toistetun pelin kentäksi. Toistetussa pelissä samaa, kerran pelattua peliä pelataan useita kierroksia. Äärettömästi toistetusta pelistä muodostuu toistetun pelin yleinen teoria (The Folk Theorem), jossa jokaisella pelaajalla on yksilöllisesti rationaalinen käytössykli. Toisen pelaajan kanssa tehty yhteistyö kasvattaa pelaajan käytössykliltä kertyvää kokonaishyötyä. Kartellitutkimuksessa ei voi ohittaa oikeustieteellistä näkökulmaa, joten sekin on tiivistetysti mukana esityksessä. Äänettömässä tai implisiittisessä kartellissa ( tacit collusion ) ei avoimen kartellin tavoin ole osapuolten välistä kommunikointia, mutta sen lopputulos on sama. Tästä syystä äänetön kartelli on yhdenmukaistettuna käytöksenä kielletty. Koska myös tunnusmerkit ovat osin samat, kartellitutkimus on saanut arvokasta mittausaineistoa paljastuneiden kartellien käytöksestä. Pelkkään hintatiedostoonkin perustuvalla tutkimuksella on vankka teoreettinen ja empiirinen pohja. Oikeuskirjallisuudessa ja käytännössä hintayhteneväisyyden on yhdessä muiden tunnusmerkkien kanssa katsottu olevan indisio kartellista. Bensiinin vähittäismyyntimarkkinat ovat rakenteellisesti otollinen kenttä toistetulle pelille. Tutkielman empiirisessä osuudessa kohteena olivat pääkaupunkiseudun bensiinin vähittäismyyntimarkkinat ja tiedosto sisälsi otoksia hinta-aikasarjoista ajalta 1.8.2004 - 30.6.2005 kaikkiaan 116:ltä jakeluasemalta Espoosta, Helsingistä ja Vantaalta. Tutkimusmenetelmänä oli toistettujen mittausten varianssianalyysi post hoc-vertailuin. Tilastollisesti merkitsevä hinnoitteluyhtenevyys lähellä sijaitsevien asemien kesken löytyi 47 asemalta, ja näin ollen näillä asemilla on yksi kartellin tunnusmerkeistä. Hinnoitteluyhtenevyyden omaavat asemat muodostivat liikenneyhteyksien mukaan jaetuilla kilpailualueillaan ryhmittymiä ja kaikkiaan tällaisia yhtenevästi hinnoittelevia ryhmittymiä oli 21. Näistä ryhmittymistä 9 oli ns. sekapareja eli osapuolina olivat kylmäasema ja liikenneasema. Useimmissa tapauksissa oli kyseessä alueensa kalleimmin hinnoitteleva kylmäasema. Benchmark Control Problem for Highway Bridge based on FLC

Fuzzy logic control (FLC) systems have been applied as an effective control system in various fields, including vibration control of structures. The advantage of this approach is its inherent robustness and ability to handle non‐linearities and uncertainties in structural behavior and loading. The study evaluates the three‐dimensional benchmark control problem for a seismically excited highway bridge using an ANFIS driven hydraulic actuators. An ANN based training strategy that considers both velocity and acceleration feedback together with a fuzzy logic rule base is developed. Present study needs only 4 accelerometers and 4 fuzzy rule bases to determine the control force, instead of 8 accelerometers and 4 displacement transducers used in the benchmark study problem. The results obtained are better than that obtained from the benchmark control algorithm.
