Há cerca de vinte anos o Mundo despertou para a resolução do equilíbrio ambiental e da sustentabilidade como uma questão global, deixando de ser um problema de cada País para passar a ser um problema da Humanidade. As sucessivas reuniões que têm sido realizadas desde a conferência mundial sobre o meio ambiente, em 1992, preconizam metas para que se mantenha o desenvolvimento e que seja garantida a sustentabilidade do planeta. O aquecimento global provocado pelos intensos consumos energéticos do Homem, tem provocado várias disfunções ambientais, nomeadamente o fenómeno das alterações climáticas. Para este efeito têm sido desenvolvidas tecnologias e assumidos por muitos países acordos e protolocos para viabilizar o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. É neste sentido que a União Europeia tem fundamentado a sua política de desenvolvimento, tendo traçado objectivos e metas nos quais Portugal se insere. A presente tese aborda o estudo de caso do Concelho de Sines, que era há quarenta anos um concelho cuja actividade económica se concentrava no sector primário e algum turismo e que foi totalmente descaracterizado pela industrialização intensiva. É de realçar a motivação de inserção deste caso, pelo facto de ser o local que sofreu maiores alterações em Portugal no século XX. Além disso, as sucessivas etapas da industrialização, ocorreram num período em que houve uma modificação gradual dos regulamentos Europeus (a par da entrada de Portugal na União Europeia) e tratados internacionais abrangendo o Meio Ambiente e em particular o Desenvolvimento Sustentável. É neste contexto que se analisa uma estratégia para a aplicação das Energias Renováveis no concelho, favorecendo um desenvolvimento equilibrado que melhore a qualidade de vida, no fundo que seja sustentável.

Competitive electricity markets are complex environments, involving a large number of different entities, playing in a dynamic scene to obtain the best advantages and profits. MASCEM is an electricity market simulator able to model market players and simulate their operation in the market. As market players are complex entities, having their characteristics and objectives, making their decisions and interacting with other players, a multi-agent architecture is used and proved to be adequate. MASCEM players have learning capabilities and different risk preferences. They are able to refine their strategies according to their past experience (both real and simulated) and considering other agents’ behavior. Agents’ behavior is also subject to its risk preferences.

This paper presents an agent-based simulator designed for analyzing agent market strategies based on a complete understanding of buyer and seller behaviours, preference models and pricing algorithms, considering user risk preferences. The system includes agents that are capable of improving their performance with their own experience, by adapting to the market conditions. In the simulated market agents interact in several different ways and may joint together to form coalitions. In this paper we address multi-agent coalitions to analyse Distributed Generation in Electricity Markets

This paper presents a new architecture for the MASCEM, a multi-agent electricity market simulator. This is implemented in a Prolog which is integrated in the JAVA program by using the LPA Win-Prolog Intelligence Server (IS) provides a DLL interface between Win-Prolog and other applications. This paper mainly focus on the MASCEM ability to provide the means to model and simulate Virtual Power Producers (VPP). VPPs are represented as a coalition of agents, with specific characteristics and goals. VPPs can reinforce the importance of these generation technologies making them valuable in electricity markets.

This paper presents MASCEM - a multi-agent based electricity market simulator. MASCEM uses game theory, machine learning techniques, scenario analysis and optimization techniques to model market agents and to provide them with decision-support. This paper mainly focus on the MASCEM ability to provide the means to model and simulate Virtual Power Players (VPP). VPPs are represented as a coalition of agents, with specific characteristics and goals. The paper details some of the most important aspects considered in VPP formation and in the aggregation of new producers and includes a case study based on real data.

Nowadays, there is a growing environmental concern about were the energy that we use comes from, bringing the att ention on renewable energies. However, the use and trade of renewable e nergies in the market seem to be complicated because of the lack of guara ntees of generation, mainly in the wind farms. The lack of guarantees is usually addressed by using a reserve generation. The aggregation of DG p lants gives place to a new concept: the Virtual Power Producer (VPP). VPPs can reinforce the importance of wind generation technologies, making them valuable in electricity markets. This paper presents some resul ts obtained with a simulation tool (ViProd) developed to support VPPs in the analysis of their operation and management methods and of their strat egies effects.

The conventional methods used to evaluate chitin content in fungi, such as biochemical assessment of glucosamine release after acid hydrolysis or epifluorescence microscopy, are low throughput, laborious, time-consuming, and cannot evaluate a large number of cells. We developed a flow cytometric assay, efficient, and fast, based on Calcofluor White staining to measure chitin content in yeast cells. A staining index was defined, its value was directly related to chitin amount and taking into consideration the different levels of autofluorecence. Twenty-two Candida spp. and four Cryptococcus neoformans clinical isolates with distinct susceptibility profiles to caspofungin were evaluated. Candida albicans clinical isolate SC5314, and isogenic strains with deletions in chitin synthase 3 (chs3Δ/chs3Δ) and genes encoding predicted Glycosyl Phosphatidyl Inositol (GPI)-anchored proteins (pga31Δ/Δ and pga62Δ/Δ), were used as controls. As expected, the wild-type strain displayed a significant higher chitin content (P < 0.001) than chs3Δ/chs3Δ and pga31Δ/Δ especially in the presence of caspofungin. Ca. parapsilosis, Ca. tropicalis, and Ca. albicans showed higher cell wall chitin content. Although no relationship between chitin content and antifungal drug susceptibility phenotype was found, an association was established between the paradoxical growth effect in the presence of high caspofungin concentrations and the chitin content. This novel flow cytometry protocol revealed to be a simple and reliable assay to estimate cell wall chitin content of fungi.

Microbial adhesion is a field of recognized relevance and, as such, an impressive array of tools has been developed to understand its molecular mechanisms and ultimately for its quantification. Some of the major limitations found within these methodologies concern the incubation time, the small number of cells analyzed, and the operator's subjectivity. To overcome these aspects, we have developed a quantitative method to measure yeast cells' adhesion through flow cytometry. In this methodology, a suspension of yeast cells is mixed with green fluorescent polystyrene microspheres (uncoated or coated with host proteins). Within 2 h, an adhesion profile is obtained based on two parameters: percentage and cells-microsphere population's distribution pattern. This flow cytometry protocol represents a useful tool to quantify yeast adhesion to different substrata in a large scale, providing manifold data in a speedy and informative manner.

Childhood excessive weight and obesity are a major public health concern from early childhood. Early childhood is an important period of development for developing healthy eating habits, that may be associated with an adequate present/future BMI. There is extensive evidence that children’s food intake is shaped by early experiences, suggesting ways in which parenting practices may be promoting obesity. But what leads parents to endorse healthier or detrimental educational practices and routines needs further study. 1. Perception of children’s weight: parents of overweight or obese children often fail to correctly perceive their children as overweight; failing to recognize their children’s excessive weight may impeach parents from implementing the best educational practices. 2. Concern: relation between the adequacy of mothers perception of their children’s weight and the level of concern - parental concern is be associated with parental practices. 3. Attribution of control: also, if parents do not consider their children’s eating behavior at least partially controllable by them, they may relinquish some of their responsibility in this area. Self-efficacy: evidence linking parental self-efficacy to parent competence and to parenting practices and behaviors; low parental self-efficacy related to the control of everyday behavior of young children may lead parents to abandon more consistent health practices and endorse permissive and inconsistent strategies. We designed 2 sequential studies that aim to contribute to the understanding of cognitive determinants of children’s eating patterns.

OBJETIVO: Estimar as taxas de incapacidade funcional e identificar os fatores sociodemográficos associados com a prevalência de incapacidade funcional entre as mulheres idosas. MÉTODOS: As estimativas das taxas de incapacidade funcional foram produzidas com informações da Pesquisa Nacional por Amostra de Domicílios, de 1998, realizada pelo Instituto Brasileiro de Geografia e Estatística. O estudo analisou a população de mulheres idosas, num total de 16.186. Foram elaborados modelos de regressão logística, utilizando como variável dependente a dificuldade para caminhar 100 metros. RESULTADOS: A prevalência de incapacidade funcional leve, moderada e severa foi maior entre as mulheres, e aumentou com a idade. Na análise de regressão logística, os indicadores mais fortemente associados com o aumento da prevalência de incapacidade funcional foram baixo nível de educação e baixo rendimento familiar. Residência rural foi também associada com redução de prevalência. CONCLUSÕES: Os resultados sugerem possíveis fatores de risco para o desenvolvimento de declínio funcional em idosas, tendo em vista que as associações encontradas foram consistentes com aquelas reportadas por outros estudos.

O sistema de telegestão é uma ferramenta que permite a gestão, em tempo real, de todo o sistema de abastecimento da Empresa Portuguesa das Águas Livres, S.A. (EPAL). Esta gestão pode ser conseguida desde a captação da água até à sua entrega ao cliente final, através dos meios de monitorização necessários às operações de comando que permitem controlar e manobrar à distância os acessórios do sistema (estações elevatórias, reservatórios, válvulas,…). A presente dissertação visa a divulgação e compilação de elementos fundamentais para a otimização das potencialidades que a telegestão oferece, abordando assim, dada a sua especificidade, um tema pouco divulgado mas de extrema importância a quem trabalha ou pretende trabalhar numa entidade gestora similar. Assim, a dissertação é constituída por seis capítulos que compreendem a caracterização do sistema de adução, transporte e distribuição da EPAL, a abordagem genérica das ferramentas de suporte à exploração do sistema, uma resenha histórica do sistema de telegestão na EPAL, bem como informações referentes ao atual sistema de telegestão, nomeadamente a sua arquitetura, principais funcionalidades, tais como o controlo de órgãos de manobra à distância e análise de parâmetros de qualidade em tempo real. Finalmente, apresentam-se algumas conclusões e recomendações para trabalhos futuros. Pretende-se assim que o presente documento contribua para uma aglutinação de informações relativas aos sistemas de telegestão para abastecimento de água, respetivas vantagens aliadas às suas funcionalidades, bem como a identificação de fragilidades do sistema que poderão ser aperfeiçoadas ou mesmo eliminadas.
