Three lichen species were wetted with distilled water at different frequencies during August 1973 to July 1974. The radial growth rates of Parmelia glabratula ssp. fuliginosa and Physcia orbicularis thalli declined with increased wetting while the radial growth rate of Parmelia conspersa thalli increased with wetting frequency until ten experimental wettings per month but at fifteen wettings per month fell to a value near to the control. In the summer months, wetting resulted in a decline in the radial growth of P. glabratula ssp fuliginosa compared with the control but had little influence on the growth of P. conspersa and Physcia orbicularis. In the winter months, wetting had no significant influence on the radial growth of Parmelia glabratula ssp. fuliginosa, while the radial growth of P. conspersa increased and Physcia orbicularis declined compared with controls. These results are interpreted physiologically and in relation to the aspect distribution of the three lichens on rock surfaces.

Some of the problems arising from the inherent instability of emulsions are discussed. Aspects of emulsion stability are described and particular attention is given to the influence of the chemical nature of the dispersed phase on adsorbed film structure and stability, Emulsion stability has been measured by a photomicrographic technique. Electrophoresis, interfacial tension and droplet rest-time data were also obtained. Emulsions were prepared using a range of oils, including aliphatic and aromatic hydrocarbons, dispersed In a solution of sodium dodecyl sulphate. In some cases a small amount of alkane or alkanol was incorporated into the oil phase. In general the findings agree with the classical view that the stability of oil-in-water emulsions is favoured by a closely packed interfacial film and appreciable electric charge on the droplets. The inclusion of non-ionic alcohol leads to enhanced stability, presumably owing to the formation of a "mixed" interfacial film which is more closely packed and probably more coherent than that of the anionic surfactant alone. In some instances differences in stability cannot he accounted for simply by differences in interfacial adsorption or droplet charge. Alternative explanations are discussed and it is postulated that the coarsening of emulsions may occur not only hy coalescence but also through the migration of oil from small droplets to larger ones by molecular diffusion. The viability of using the coalescence rates of droplets at a plane interface as a guide to emulsion stability has been researched. The construction of a suitable apparatus and the development of a standard testing procedure are described. Coalescence-time distributions may be correlated by equations similar to those presented by other workers, or by an analysis based upon the log-normal function. Stability parameters for a range of oils are discussed in terms of differences in film drainage and the natl1re of the interfacial film. Despite some broad correlations there is generally poor agreement between droplet and emulsion stabilities. It is concluded that hydrodynamic factors largely determine droplet stability in the systems studied. Consequently droplet rest-time measurements do not provide a sensible indication of emulsion stability,

Research into FL/EFL macro-reading (the effect of the broader context of reading) has been little explored in spite of its importance in the FL/EFL reading programmes. This study was designed to build on previous work by explaining in more depth the influence of the socio-educational reading environment in an Arab university (Al-Fateh University in Tripoli, Libya) - as reported by students, upon these students' reading ability in English and Arabic (particularly the former). Certain aspects of the lecturers' reading habits and attitudes and classroom operation were also investigated. Written cloze tests in English and Arabic and self-administered questionnaires were given to 125 preliminary-year undergraduates in three faculties of Al-Fateh University on the basis of their use of English as a medium of instruction (one representing the Arts' stream and two representing the Science stream). Twenty two lecturers were interviewed and observed by an inventory technique along with twenty other preliminary-year students. Factor analysis and standard multiple regression technique were among the statistical methods used to analyse the main data. The findings demonstrate a significant relationship between reading ability in English and the reading individual and environmental variables - as defined in the study. A combination of common and different series of such predictors were found accountable for the variation (43% for the first year English specialist; 48% for the combined Medicine student sample) in the English reading tests. Also found was a significant, though not very large, relationship between reading ability in Arabic and the reading environment. Non-statistical but objective analyses, based on the present data, also revealed an overall association between English reading performance and an important number of reading environmental variables - where many `poor' users of the reading environment (particularly the academic one) obtained low scores in the English cloze tests. Accepting the limitations of a single study, it is nevertheless clear that the reading environment at the University is in need of improvement and that students' use of it also requires better guidance and training in how to use it effectively. Suggestions are made for appropriate educational changes.

The temperature dependence of the pyrolysis products of two types of lignin (Alcell lignin and Asian lignin) was investigated using pyrolysis-gas chromatography-mass spectrometry (PyGC-MS). About 50 compounds were identified and quantified for each type of lignin over a temperature range of 400-800C. The maximum yield of phenolic compounds was obtained at 600C for both lignins, which was 17.2% for Alcell lignin and 15.5% for Asian lignin. Most of the phenolic compounds had an individual yield of less than 1%; however, for Alcell lignin, 5-hydroxyvanillin was the highest yield at 4.29 wt%on dry ash-free lignin, and for Asian lignin, 2-methoxy-4-vinylphenol was the highest yield at 4.15 wt % on dry ash-free lignin.

What influence do marketing departments have in companies today? Which factors determine this influence? These are the issues discussed in the present article. Empirical evidence based on data from companies in the Netherlands demonstrates that accountability, innovativeness and customer connections are the three major drivers of influence. The need for a strong marketing department within companies is also discussed, supported by empirical data.

Electrocardiography (ECG) has been recently proposed as biometric trait for identification purposes. Intra-individual variations of ECG might affect identification performance. These variations are mainly due to Heart Rate Variability (HRV). In particular, HRV causes changes in the QT intervals along the ECG waveforms. This work is aimed at analysing the influence of seven QT interval correction methods (based on population models) on the performance of ECG-fiducial-based identification systems. In addition, we have also considered the influence of training set size, classifier, classifier ensemble as well as the number of consecutive heartbeats in a majority voting scheme. The ECG signals used in this study were collected from thirty-nine subjects within the Physionet open access database. Public domain software was used for fiducial points detection. Results suggested that QT correction is indeed required to improve the performance. However, there is no clear choice among the seven explored approaches for QT correction (identification rate between 0.97 and 0.99). MultiLayer Perceptron and Support Vector Machine seemed to have better generalization capabilities, in terms of classification performance, with respect to Decision Tree-based classifiers. No such strong influence of the training-set size and the number of consecutive heartbeats has been observed on the majority voting scheme.

In the present paper we numerically study instrumental impact on statistical properties of quasi-CW Raman fiber laser using a simple model of multimode laser radiation. Effects, that have the most influence, are limited electrical bandwidth of measurement equipment and noise. To check this influence, we developed a simple model of the multimode quasi- CW generation with exponential statistics (i.e. uncorrelated modes). We found that the area near zero intensity in probability density function (PDF) is strongly affected by both factors, for example both lead to formation of a negative wing of intensity distribution. But far wing slope of PDF is not affected by noise and, for moderate mismatch between optical and electrical bandwidth, is only slightly affected by bandwidth limitation. The generation spectrum often becomes broader at higher power in experiments, so the spectral/electrical bandwidth mismatch factor increases over the power that can lead to artificial dependence of the PDF slope over the power. It was also found that both effects influence the ACF background level: noise impact decreases it, while limited bandwidth leads to its increase. © (2014) COPYRIGHT Society of Photo-Optical Instrumentation Engineers (SPIE). This survey is devoted to some fractional extensions of the incomplete lumped formulation, the lumped formulation and the formulation of Lauwerier of the temperature field problem in oil strata. The method of integral transforms is used to solve the corresponding boundary value problems for the fractional heat equation. By using Caputo’s differintegration operator and the Laplace transform, new integral forms of the solutions are obtained. In each of the different cases the integrands are expressed in terms of a convolution of two special functions of Wright’s type.

Background: Oral anticoagulation (OAC) reduces stroke risk in patients with atrial fibrillation (AF); however it is still underutilized and sometimes refused by patients. Two inter-related studies were undertaken to understand the experiences and what influences this un- derutilisation of warfarin treatment in AF patients. These studies explored physician and patient experiences of AF and OAC treatment. The paper focuses on specific sub-themes from the study that explored patients’ experiences will be discussed. Aim: The study in question aimed to explore the experiences which influence patients’ decisions to accept, decline or discontinue OAC. Methods: Semi-structured individual interviews with patients were con- ducted. Three sub-groups of patients (n = 11) diagnosed with AF were interviewed; those who accepted, refused, and who discontinued war- farin. Interpretative phenomenological analysis (IPA) was used to examine the data. IPA is a qualitative method that focuses on how participants make sense of an experiences phenomenon Results: Three over-arching themes comprised patients’ experiences: (i)the initial consultation, (ii) life after the consultation, and (iii) patients’reflections. In the last theme, patients reflected on their perceptions ofaspirin and warfarin. Aspirin was perceived as a natural wonder-drugwhile warfarin was perceived as a dangerous drug usually given to peo-ple at the end of their life. Interestingly they perceive both drugs as‘old’. However, for aspirin it had a positive association, old meaningtried and tested. While for warfarin, old meant ‘has been around fortoo long’.Conclusion: Media had an important role in how patients’ perceptionsof these two drugs were influenced. Literature shows that framingtechniques, i.e. using certain words or phrases such as ‘rat poison’, areprocesses adopted by media to alter medical knowledge into lay per-son’s language. Patients in turn form negative cognitive schemas, between the word ‘poison’ and warfarin, leading to the negative per-ception of warfarin which could influence non-adherence to treatment. This qualitative research highlighted the potential influences of themedia on AF patient perceptions commencing OAC treatment. Theassociation between media stimuli and patient perceptions on OACshould be further explored. The influential power of lay-media couldalso be instrumental in disseminating appropriate educational materialto the public

A tanulmány a jelenlegi gazdasági válság jellemzőit a vállalatok szintjén elemzi, továbbá vizsgálja annak következményeit a válság utáni lehetséges növekedésre. A tanulmány támaszkodik a nemzetközi szakirodalomban tárgyalt tapasztalatokra a válságokból való kilábalás példái alapján, amelyek a korábbi – 1980 és 2002 közötti – válságok során jelentkeztek. Magyarországi és szlovákiai empirikus vizsgálati tapasztalatok ismertetésére kerül sor arra vonatkozóan, hogy miként reagáltak a vállalatok a jelenlegi gazdasági recesszióra. A tanulmány elemzi a magyar és a szlovák vállalatok által a válság alatt követett stratégiák hatását a kereslet megélénkülése esetén adódó növekedési lehetőségek kihasználása szempontjából. A tanulmány illusztrációként bemutatja egy innovatív szlovákiai internetszolgáltató vállalat példáját. _______ The paper analyses the characteristics of the economic crisis at the level of companies, and the consequences for possibilities of growth after the crisis. The authors build on the experiences discussed in international literature concerning recovery after the previous crises between 1980 and 2002. The paper summarizes the empirical research findings on enterprise level reactions to the present economic recession. The focus of analysis is connected to the question of inluence of strategies on capabilities for realizing the growth options after the crisis.
