China has become a major player in world trade. Although it has not signed any trade agreements with the countries of the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA), China has been gaining ground as a supplier of goods, making vigorous inroads into this area. One of the dominant trends in economic integration has been the development of intra-industry trade, which has flourished in the nafta signatory countries. This paper focuses on the analysis of intra-industry trade in the context of this free trade area, where the production structure of the countries involved has changed significantly since trade liberalization, revealing the internationalization of production chains. Lastly, changes in the trade structure induced by the growing presence of China in the nafta region are captured. Trade within this area works like a radiated wheel, with the United States acting as the axis, while China, Canada and Mexico operate as the spokes.

Information Science (IS) research has strongly grown in Brazil, in the last decade, and, as a consequence, it was possible to observe a growth of the support given by the Brazilian National Scientific and Technological Development Council - CNPq. In this sense, this paper aims to analyze the scientific production (journal papers) of the 15 IS researchers who have the highest level research fellowships during the period between 2001 and 2010. Data were analyzed in terms of bibliographic dispersion, internationalization, and scientific collaboration as well as in terms of the most prominent journals. The results (219 papers) evidence an average of around 1.5 papers per author per year and a group of 63 different journals (60% evaluated under levels Qualis A1 and B1). The journal DataGramaZero is strongly present since it responds for 22% of the whole production. It was possible to observe a still shy presence of foreign journals and none of them belong to the Anglo-Saxon environment. The kind of authorship is well-balanced between individual and collective ones, including inter-institutional collaboration. It is possible to conclude that this group is mature and very productive, and it represents an academical IS leadership in Brazil but still lacks more international visibility.

Among the several changes propelled by the nancial and economic process, which began in 1990, the one which calls our attention is the one related to the role that Brazilian companies occupy in the international canary. In other words, it’s the imperialist character or, to be more precise, the subordinated imperialism which is carried out by the capital of Brazilian origin – or even international, but which has its “geographical basis” in Brazil – at the current moment of the capital internationalization.

The internationalization of research and development (R&D) activities has been lifted to an eminent role over the last years, how confirm the greater intensity of R&D investment inflows into countries other than the home countries of the multinational enterprises (MNE). As the industrialization of the Brazilian economy has been marked by the presence of MNE, this paper aims to discuss some characteristics of the Brazilian subsidiaries of foreign MNE concerning R&D activities. To do so, we draw on a comprehensive survey applied to MNE affiliates in Brazil in 2006. It allows us to describe the locally-conducted R&D activities, its specificities and perspectives of future inversions. Among its findings, there are evidences pointing that in Brazil the R&D internationalization the phases of investment in manufactures and in R&D may occur almost simultaneously, depending on the sector s involvement in the globalization process.

In the 1940’s and 1950’s the Brazilian government implemented various policies towards the development of rural education adopting innovative orientations experienced in other iberoamerican countries. This article covers a study on the circulation and appropriation of education models seeking to apprehend the implications of the comparative operations by questioning the national processes in their interrelationship with much more ample phenomena of internationalization and globalization. The article uses as source of analysis the document entitled “Rural Education in Mexico” elaborated by Manoel Bergstrom Lourenço Filho, in 1951, and later published in a Brazilian Magazine of Pedagogical Studies, in 1952. The article discusses the narrative construction of this report and the comparing operations which Lourenço Filho has undertook presenting the Mexican education as a model.
