In this work, the use of proton nuclear magnetic resonance, (1)H NMR, was fully described as a powerful tool to follow a photoreaction and to determine accurate quantum yields, so called true quantum yields (Phi(true)), when a reactant and photoproduct absorption overlap. For this, Phi(true) for the trans-cis photoisomerization process were determined for rhenium(I) polypyridyl complexes, fac-[Re(CO)(3)(NN)(trans-L)](+) (NN = 1,10-phenanthroline, phen, or 4,7-diphenyl-1,10-phenanthroline, ph(2)phen, and L = 1,2-bis(4-pyridyl) ethylene, bpe, or 4-styrylpyridine, stpy). The true values determined at 365 nm irradiation (e. g. Phi(NMR) = 0.80 for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(phen)(trans-bpe)](+)) were much higher than those determined by absorption spectral changes (Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.39 for fac-[Re(CO)(3)(phen)(trans-bpe)](+)). Phi(NMR) are more accurate in these cases due to the distinct proton signals of trans and cis-isomers, which allow the actual determination of each component concentration under given irradiation time. Nevertheless when the photoproduct or reactant contribution at the probe wavelength is negligible, one can determine Phi(true) by regular absorption spectral changes. For instance, Phi(313) nm for free ligand photoisomerization determined both by absorption and (1)H NMR variation are equal within the experimental error (bpe: Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.27, Phi(NMR) = 0.26; stpy: Phi(UV-Vis) = 0.49, Phi(NMR) = 0.49). Moreover, (1)H NMR data combined with electronic spectra allowed molar absorptivity determination of difficult to isolate cis-complexes. (C) 2009 Elsevier B. V. All rights reserved.

Fluorescent probes derivated from auramine, 1-aminopyrene, and 9-aminoacridine containing a malononitrile group are copolymerized with methyl methacrylate. These new fluorescent polymeric materials are studied in solution of different solvents by steady-state and time-resolved emission techniques. Their spectroscopic properties and excited state dynamics are driven by charge transfer from the aromatic group to the electron withdrawing CN groups, and this factor is responsible for the non-exponential emission decay behavior. The Hsp70 family is one of the most important and conserved molecular chaperone families. It is well documented that Hsp70 family members assist many cellular processes involving protein quality control, as follows: protein folding, transport through membranes, protein degradation, escape from aggregation, intracellular signaling, among several others. The Hsp70 proteins act as a cellular pivot capable of receiving and distributing substrates among the other molecular chaperone families. Despite the high identity of the Hsp70 proteins, there are several homologue Hsp70 members that do not have the same role in the cell, which allow them to develop and participate in such large number of activities. The Hsp70 proteins are composed of two main domains: one that binds ATP and hydrolyses it to ADP and another which directly interacts with substrates. These domains present bidirectional heterotrophic allosteric regulation allowing a fine regulated cycle of substrate binding and release. The general mechanism of the Hsp70s cycle is under the control of ATP hydrolysis that modulates the low (ATP-bound state) and high (ADP-bound state) affinity states of Hsp70 for substrates. An important feature of the Hsp70s cycle is that they have several co-chaperones that modulate their cycle and that can also interact and select substrates. Here, we review some known details of the bidirectional heterotrophic allosteric mechanism and other important features for Hsp70s regulating cycle and function.

Folate is shown to react with singlet-excited state of riboflavin in a diffusion controlled reaction and with triplet-excited state of riboflavin in a somewhat slower reaction with (3)k(q) = 4.8 x 10(8) L mol(-1) s(-1) in aqueous phosphate buffer at pH 7.4, ionic strength of 0.2 mol L(-1), and 25 degrees C. Singlet quenching is assigned as photo-induced reductive electron transfer from ground state folate to singlet-excited riboflavin, while triplet quenching is assigned as one-electron transfer rather than hydrogen atom transfer from folate to triplet-excited riboflavin, as the reaction quantum yield, phi = 0.32, is hardly influenced by solvent change from water to deuterium oxide, phi = 0.37. Cyclic voltammetry showed an irreversible two-electron anodic process for folate, E = 1.14 V versus NHE at a scan-rate of 50 mV s(-1), which appears to be kinetically controlled by the heterogeneous electron transfer from the substrates to the electrode. Main products of folate photooxidation sensitized by riboflavin were pterin-6-carboxylic acid and p-aminobenzoyl-L-glutamic acid as shown by liquid chromatographic ion-trap mass spectrometry (LC-IT-MS).

In this article, the development and changes in Swedish public policy relating to tourism from the 1930s to 2010 is described and interpreted from a political economy perspective. A case study, compiled from mainly secondary sources, is analyzed from a theoretical framework based on regulation theory. The purpose with this study is to increase the understanding of how the macro political economy context has influenced the policy-making in tourism in Sweden, but also to make a contribution to an area which seems to be quite neglected when it comes to research. The changes are analyzed according to the three periods denoted as pre-Fordism (mid-19th century-1930s), Fordism (1930s-1970s) and post-Fordism (1970s to present). It is observed how the general changes between these periods regarding aspects such as regulation and deregulation, and the degree of state involvement, have affected tourism policy making. The tourism policy making has changed from being insignificant, to a high degree of state involvement including planning, control and supervision, to a situation where the market rather than government regulation is considered as state of the art.

The effect of confinement on the magnetic structure of vortices of dipolar coupled ferromagnetic nanoelements is an issue of current interest, not only for academic reasons, but also for the potential impact in a number of promising applications. Most applications, such as nano-oscillators for wireless data transmission, benefit from the possibility of tailoring the vortex core magnetic pattern. We report a theoretical study of vortex nucleation in pairs of coaxial iron and Permalloy cylinders, with diameters ranging from 21nm to 150nm, and 12nm and 21nm thicknesses, separated by a non-magnetic layer. 12nm thick iron and Permalloy isolated (single) cylinders do not hold a vortex, and 21nm isolated cylinders hold a vortex. Our results indicate that one may tailor the magnetic structure of the vortices, and the relative chirality, by selecting the thickness of the non-magnetic spacer and the values of the cylinders diameters and thicknesses. Also, the dipolar interaction may induce vortex formation in pairs of 12nm thick nanocylinders and inhibit the formation of vortices in pairs of 21nm thick nanocylinders. These new phases are formed according to the value of the distance between the cylinderes. Furthermore, we show that the preparation route may control relative chirality and polarity of the vortex pair. For instance: by saturating a pair of Fe 81nm diameter, 21nm thickness cylinders, along the crystalline anisotropy direction, a pair of 36nm core diameter vortices, with same chirality and polarity is prepared. By saturating along the perpendicular direction, one prepares a 30nm diameter core vortex pair, with opposite chirality and opposite polarity. We also present a theoretical discussion of the impact of vortices on the thermal hysteresis of a pair of interface biased elliptical iron nanoelements, separated by an ultrathin nonmagnetic insulating layer. We have found that iron nanoelements exchange coupled to a noncompensated NiO substrate, display thermal hysteresis at room temperature, well below the iron Curie temperature. The thermal hysteresis consists in different sequences of magnetic states in the heating and cooling branches of a thermal loop, and originates in the thermal reduction of the interface field, and on the rearrangements of the magnetic structure at high temperatures, 5 produce by the strong dipolar coupling. The width of the thermal hysteresis varies from 500 K to 100 K for lateral dimensions of 125 nm x 65 nm and 145 nm x 65 nm. We focus on the thermal effects on two particular states: the antiparallel state, which has, at low temperatures, the interface biased nanoelement with the magnetization aligned with the interface field and the second nanoelement aligned opposite to the interface field; and in the parallel state, which has both nanoelements with the magnetization aligned with the interface field at low temperatures. We show that the dipolar interaction leads to enhanced thermal stability of the antiparallel state, and reduces the thermal stability of the parallel state. These states are the key phases in the application of pairs of ferromagnetic nanoelements, separated by a thin insulating layer, for tunneling magnetic memory cells. We have found that for a pair of 125nm x 65nm nanoelements, separated by 1.1nm, and low temperature interface field strength of 5.88kOe, the low temperature state (T = 100K) consists of a pair of nearly parallel buckle-states. This low temperature phase is kept with minor changes up to T= 249 K when the magnetization is reduced to 50% of the low temperature value due to nucleation of a vortex centered around the middle of the free surface nanoelement. By further increasing the temperature, there is another small change in the magnetization due to vortex motion. Apart from minor changes in the vortex position, the high temperature vortex state remains stable, in the cooling branch, down to low temperatures. We note that wide loop thermal hysteresis may pose limits on the design of tunneling magnetic memory cells

The polycrystalline sample of Nd3/2Bi3/2Fe5O12 was prepared by a high- temperature solid-state reaction technique. Preliminary X-ray structural analysis exhibits the formation of a single-phase tetragonal structure at room temperature. Microstructural analysis by scanning electron microscopy shows that the sintered sample has well defined grains. These grains are distributed uniformly throughout the surface of the sample. Detailed studies of dielectric response at various frequencies and temperatures exhibit a dielectric anomaly at 400 A degrees C. The electrical properties (impedance, modulus and conductivity) of the material were studied using a complex impedance spectroscopy technique. These studies reveal a significant contribution of grain and grain boundary effects in the material. The frequency dependent plots of modulus and the impedance loss show that the conductivity relaxation is of non-Debye type. Studies of electrical conductivity with temperature demonstrate that the compound exhibits Arrhenius-type of electrical conductivity. Study of ac conductivity with frequency suggests that the material obeys Jonscher's universal power law.

Polycrystalline La3/2Bi3/2Fe5O12 (LBIO) compound was prepared by a high-temperature solid-state reaction technique. The complex impedance of LBIO was measured over a wide temperature (i.e., room temperature to 500 C) and frequencies (i.e., 10(2)-10(6) Hz) ranges. This study takes advantage of plotting ac data simultaneously in the form of impedance and modulus spectroscopic plots and obey non-Debye type of relaxation process. The Nyquist's plot showed the presence of grain effects in the material at high temperature. The ac conductivity spectrum was found to obey Jonscher's universal power law. The dc conductivity was found to increase with rise in temperature. The activation energy of the compound was found to be 0.24 and 0.51 eV in the low and high-temperature region, respectively, for conduction process.

Glass samples with the composition (mol%) 80TeO(2)-10Nb(2)O(5)-5K(2)O-5Li(2)O, stable against crystallization, were prepared containing Yb3+, Tm3+ and Ho3+. The energy transfer and energy back transfer mechanisms in samples containing 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+ and 5% Yb3+-5% Tm3+-0.5% Ho3+ were estimated by measuring the absorption and fluorescence spectra together with the time dependence of the Yb3+ F-2(5/2) excited state. A good fit for the luminescence time evolution was obtained with the Yokota-Tanimoto's diffusion-limited model. The up-conversion fluorescence was also studied in 5% Yb-5% Tm. 5% Yb-0.5% Ho and 5% Yb-5% Tm-0.5% Ho tellurite glasses under laser excitation at 975 nm. Strong emission was observed from (1)G(4) and F-3(2) Tm3+ energy levels in all samples. The S-5(2) Ho3+ emission was observed only in Yb3+Ho3+ samples being completely quenched in Yb3+/Tm3+/Tm3+ samples. (C) 2001 Elsevier B.V. B.V. All rights reserved.

Tungstate fluorophosphate glasses of good optical quality were synthesized by fusion of the components and casting under air atmosphere. The absorption spectra from near-infrared to visible were obtained and the Judd-Ofelt parameters determined from the absorption bands. Transition probabilities, excited state lifetimes and transition branching ratios, were, determined from the measurements. Pumping with a 354.7 nm beam from a pulsed laser. resulted in emission at 450 nm. due to transition D-1(2)-->F-3(4) in Tm3+ ions and a broadband emission centered at approximate to 550 nm attributed to the glass matrix. When pumping at 650 nm, two emission bands at 450 nm (D-1(2)-->F-3(4)) and at 790 nm (H-3(4)-->H-3(6)) were observed. Excitation spectra were also obtained in order to understand the origin of both emissions. Theoretical and experimental lifetimes were determined and,the results were explained in terms of multiphonon relaxation. (C) 2003 American Institute of Physics.

Blue, green, red, and near-infrared upconversion luminescence in the wavelength region of 480-740 nm in Pr3+/Yb3+-codoped lead-cadmium-germanate glass under 980 nm diode laser excitation, is presented. Upconversion emission peaks around 485, 530, 610, 645, and 725 nm which were ascribed to the P-3(0)-H-3(J) (J = 4, 5, and 6), and P-3(0)-F-3(J) (J = 2, 3, and 4), transitions, respectively, were observed. The population of the praseodymium upper P-3(0) emitting level was accomplished through a combination of ground-state absorption of Yb3+ ions at the F-2(7/2), energy-transfer Yb3+(2F(5/2))-Pr3+(H-3(4)), and excited-state absorption of Pr3+ ions provoking the (1)G(4)-P-3(0) transition. The dependence of the upconversion luminescence upon the Yb3+-concentration and diode laser power, is also examined, in order to subsidize the proposed upconversion excitation mechanism. Frequency upconversion luminescence in erbium-doped PbGeO3-PbF2-CdF2-based transparent glass ceramics (TGC) under 980 nm infrared excitation is investigated. Upconversion emission signals around 410, 525, 550, 660, and 850 nm were generated and identified as due to the H-2(9/2) H-2(11/2), S-4(3/2), and F-4(9/2) transitions to the I-4(15/2) ground-state, and S-4(3/2)-I-4(13/2), respectively. The erbium ions excited-state emitting levels were populated via a combination of stepwise ground-state absorption (GSA), excited-state absorption (ESA), and cross-relaxation processes. The results also disclosed that both blue (410 nm) and red (660 nm) upconversion emission signals in the transparent glass ceramic sample presented twice as much intensity as compared to its vitreous counterpart. We use a (CO2)-C-13 laser as optical pumping source to search for new THz laser lines generated from (CH3OH)-C-13. Nineteen new THz laser lines (also identified as far-infrared, FIR) ranging from 42.3 mu m (7.1 THz) to 717.7 mu m (0.42 THz) are reported. They are characterized in wavelength, offset, relative polarization, relative intensity, and optimum working pressure. We have assigned eight laser lines to specific rotational energy levels in the excited state associated with the C-O stretching mode. (c) 2006 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.
