Starting a business in Illinois : handbook.

The Illinois Entrepreneurship Network was established throughout the state to provide business management, counseling and training, assistance in entering international markets, information on competing for the state and federal contracts, developing technology related products and providing a supportive environment for new, startup businesses. This network consists of Small Business Development Centers, Procurement Technical Assistance Centers, International Trade/NAFTA Centers, Small Business Incubators and of course Entrepreneurship Centers. Assistance is provided in the areas of preparing business and marketing plans, securing capital, improving business skills, accessing international trade opportunities and addressing other business management needs. DCEO also has programs targeted to assist minority and women-owned business concerns. The Illinois Entrepreneurship Network is a collaborative arrangement among DCEO, the US Small Business Administration, the US Department of Defense, colleges and universities and private business organizations. Pursuant to the Business Assistance and Regulatory Reform Act, the Illinois Department of Commerce and Economic Opportunity (DCEO) created the IEN Business Information Center of Illinois (the Center). The goal of the Center is to enhance the state's business climate by making it easier for businesses to comply with government requirements and gain access to the information they need to be competitive. After a year of study, deliberation, and collaboration with literally hundreds of stakeholders in higher education and the state economy, the Public Agenda Task Force presented the Illinois Public Agenda for College and Career Success to the Illinois Board of Higher Education, which has statutory responsibility for master planning for higher education. On December 9, 2008, the Board unanimously endorsed the Public Agenda as the blueprint to guide education policy -- from preschool to graduate school -- in Illinois for the next decade.

A simulating software of fetal phonocardiographic signals

A valuable alternative to traditional diagnostic tool to record fetal heart rate, to monitor the general fetal wellbeing, is fetal phonocardiography, a passive and low cost acoustic recording of fetal heart sounds. In this paper, it is presented a simulating software of fetal phonocardiographic signals relative to different fetal physiological states and recording conditions (for example different kinds and levels of noise). This software can be useful to test and assess fetal heart rate extraction algorithms from fetal phonocardiographic recordings and as a teaching tool for demonstration to medical students and others. © 2010 IEEE.

No se ha definido el número de repeticiones necesarias para obtener un nivel de competencia adecuado. La evidencia encontrada indica un número mínimo de cincuenta repeticiones, para alcanzar cierto grado de habilidad.

Use of Google as a tool to aid diagnosis by optometry students

Background: Previous work has shown that medical problems can be diagnosed by practitioners using Google. The aim of this study was to determine whether optometry students would benefit from using Google when diagnosing eye diseases. Methods: Participants were given symptoms and signs and instructed to list three key words and use them to search Aston University e-Library and Google UK. Results: Aston University e-Library only search resulted in correct diagnosis in 16 of 60 simulated cases. Aston e-Library plus Google search resulted in correct diagnosis in 31 of 60 simulated cases. Conclusion: Google is a useful aid to help optometry students improve their success rate when diagnosing eye conditions.

Convergence and translation: attitudes to inter-professional learning and teaching of creative problem-solving among medical and engineering students and staff

Background: Healthcare worldwide needs translation of basic ideas from engineering into the clinic. Consequently, there is increasing demand for graduates equipped with the knowledge and skills to apply interdisciplinary medicine/engineering approaches to the development of novel solutions for healthcare. The literature provides little guidance regarding barriers to, and facilitators of, effective interdisciplinary learning for engineering and medical students in a team-based project context. Methods: A quantitative survey was distributed to engineering and medical students and staff in two universities, one in Ireland and one in Belgium, to chart knowledge and practice in interdisciplinary learning and teaching, and of the teaching of innovation. Results: We report important differences for staff and students between the disciplines regarding attitudes towards, and perceptions of, the relevance of interdisciplinary learning opportunities, and the role of creativity and innovation. There was agreement across groups concerning preferred learning, instructional styles, and module content. Medical students showed greater resistance to the use of structured creativity tools and interdisciplinary teams. Conclusions: The results of this international survey will help to define the optimal learning conditions under which undergraduate engineering and medicine students can learn to consider the diverse factors which determine the success or failure of a healthcare engineering solution.
