The purpose of this thesis is to evaluate and refute Yvonne Griggs’ claims that the films “House of Strangers” (1949) and “Broken Lance” (1954) are as Griggs deems “genre-based adaptations” of William Shakespeare’s “King Lear.” I argue that the films, although they have some essential elements ofKing Lear,” lack intentionality and reception, pivotal components in determining viability as a Shakespearean film adaptation. Using Griggs’ book as my critical background, I will show that these films are better classified under their respective genre categories, Western and film noir, not as “King Lear” genre adaptations. I will also suggest criteria for determining the level of canonicity of a “King Lear” film adaptation. Popularity of films does not determine validity, and a film does not need purported Shakespearean provenance to validate its ratings. Some films, like these, merely reference or pay homage to Shakespeare through use of essential elements ofKing Lear”; here, I deem such affinities to be more unintentional than intentional.

A combination of X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis and Raman spectroscopy was employed to characterise the ageing of alumina hydrolysates synthesised from the hydrolysis of anhydrous tri-sec-butoxyaluminium(III). X-Ray diffraction showed that the alumino-oxy(hydroxy) hydrolysates were pseudoboehmite. For boehmite the lamellar spacings are in the b direction and multiple d(020) peaks are observed for the un-aged hydrolysate. After 4 h of ageing, a single d(020) peak is observed at 6.53 Å. Thermal analysis showed five endotherms at 70, 140, 238, 351 and 445°C. These endotherms are attributed to the dehydration and dehydroxylation of the boehmite-like hydrolysate. Raman spectroscopy shows the presence of bands for the washed hydrolysates at 333, 355, 414, 455, 475, 495, 530 and 675 cm–1. These bands are attributed to pseudoboehmite. Ageing of the hydrolysates results in an increase in the crystallite size of the pseudoboehmite.

Diruthenium (II. III) complexes of the type [Ru-2(O2CAr)(4) (2-mimH)(2)](ClO4) (Ar = C6H4-p-X : X=OMe,1, X=Me, 2, 2-mimH=2-methylimidazole) have been isolated from the reaction of Ru2Cl(O2CAr)(4) with 2-mimH in CH2Cl2 followed by the addition of NaClO4. The crystal structure of 1.1.75CH(2)Cl(2).H2O has been determined. The crystal belongs to the monoclinic space group p2(1)/c with the following unit cell dimensions for the C40H40N4O16ClRu2.1.75CH(2)Cl(2).H2O (M = 1237.0) : a = 12.347(3)Angstrom, b = 17.615(5)Angstrom, c = 26.148(2)Angstrom,beta = 92.88(1)degrees. v = 5679(2)Angstrom(3). Z=4, D-c = 1.45 g cm(-3). lambda(Mo-K-alpha) = 0.7107 Angstrom, mu(Mo-K-alpha) = 8.1 cm(-1), T = 293 K, R = 0.0815 (wR(2) = 0.2118) for 5834 reflections with 1 > 2 sigma(I). The complex has a tetracarboxylatodiruthenium (II, III) core and two axially bound 2-methylimidazole ligands. The Ru-Ru bond length is 2.290(1)Angstrom. The Ru-Ru bond order is 2.5 and the complex is three-electron paramagnetic. The complex shows an irreversible Ru-2(II,III)-->Ru-2(Il,II) reduction near -0.2 V vs SCE in CH2Cl2-0. 1 MTBAP. The complexes exemplify the first adduct of the tetracarboxylatodiruthenium (II,III) core having N-donor ligands

Iron is a major pollutant released as a by-product during several industrial operations especially during acid mining of metal ores. In this paper, the use of Bengal gram husk (husk of channa dal, Cicer arientinum) in the biosorption of Fe(III) from aqueous solutions is discussed. Parameters like agitation time, adsorbent dosage and pH were studied at different Fe(Ill) concentrations. The adsorption data fit well with Langmuir and Freundlich isotherm models. The adsorption capacity (q(max)) calculated from the Langmuir isotherm was 72.16 mg of Fe(III)/g of the biosorbent at an initial pH of 2.5. Desorption Studies were performed at different concentrations of hydrochloric acid showing that quantitative recovery of the metal ion is possible. The infrared spectra of the biomass before and after treatment with Fe(III), revealed that hydroxyl, carboxyl and amide bonds are involved in the uptake of Fe(III) ions.

Blue coloured, unstable, essentially diamagnetic and non-electrolytic diruthenium(III) complexes of the formation [Ru2O(O2CR)4(en)2(PPh3)2] were prepared by reacting [Ru2O(O2CR)4(PPh3)2] with 1,2-diaminoethane (en) in CH2Cl2 (R = C6H4-p-X; X = H, Me and OMe). The molecular structure of the complexes is proposed as [{(?1-O2CR)(?1-en)(PPH3)Ru}2(?-O)(?-O2CR)2] based on the 1H NMR spectral data. The electronic spectra of the complexes display a band near 569 nm with a shoulder at 630 nm. In CH2Cl2-0.1 M [Bun4N]ClO4, the complexes exhibit redox couples Ru2III,III/Ru2III,IV and Ru2III,IV/Ru2IV,IV near 0.1 and 1.2 V (vs SCE), respectively. The potentials are the lowest among diruthenium(III) complexes with a similar core structure.

Growth of Au-catalyzed InP nanowires (NWs) by metalorganic chemical vapor deposition (MOCVD) has been studied in the temperature range of 400-510 °C and V/III ratio of 44-700. We demonstrate that minimal tapering of InP NWs can be achieved at 400 °C and V/III ratio of 350. Zinc-blende (ZB) or wurtzite (WZ) NWs is obtained depending on the growth conditions. 4K microphotoluminescence (μ-PL) studies show that emission energy is blue-shifted as growth temperature increases. By changing these growth parameters, one can tune the emission wavelength of InP NWs which is attractive for applications in developing novel optoelectronic devices. © 2010 IEEE.

The characterization of the algal Nitzschia hantzschiana solution with (or without) Fe(III) was carried out using fluorescence emission and synchronous-scan spectroscopy. An emission peak (excited at 440 nm) was observed at 675 nm for Nitzschia hantzschiana solution. The effective characterization method used was synchronous-scan fluorescence spectroscopy (SFS). A wavelength difference (Delta lambda) of 90 nm was maintained between excitation and emission wavelengths. The peak was observed at about 236(ex) nm (326(em) nm) for synchronous fluorescence spectroscopy. Fe(III) was an effective quencher. The relationship between I-0/I (quenching efficiency) and c (concentration of Fe (III) added) was a linear correlation for the algal solution with Fe(III). Effects of pH on synchronous-scan fluorescence intensity were evident.

Four novel polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of two new double betaine derivatives have been synthesized and structurally determined. In [{La-2(L-1)(2)(H2O)(9)}(n)]Cl-6n. 2nH(2)O (1) and [{Tb(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. nH(2)O (2) (L-1 =4,4'-trimethylenedipyridinio-N,N'-diacetate), the lanthanide(III) ions form a two-dimensional layer in which each pair of lanthanide(III) ions is bridged by two syn-anti mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups. Adjacent layers are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions, to form a three-dimensional network. Isomorphous [{Ln(L-1)(H2O)(4)}(n)]Cl-3n. 5nH(2)O (Ln=La, 3; Ln=Tb, 4; L-2=1,3 bis(pyridinio-4-carboxylato)-propane) each contain a centrosymmetric paddle-wheel-like dimeric unit in which each pair of adjacent metal atoms is bridged by four syn-syn mu-carboxylato-O,O' groups that are oriented nearly perpendicular to each other about the metal-metal axis. Neighboring dimeric subunits are bridged by a pair of flexible LL ligands into a polymeric chain. Adjacent chains are inter-linked by hydrogen bonds among aqua ligands, lattice water molecules and chloride ions into a three-dimensional network. (C) 1999 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

Four new polymeric lanthanide(III) complexes of nicotinic acid N-oxide and isonicotinic acid N-oxide have been synthesized and structurally determined. In the isomorphous compounds [(Ln(L-1)(3) (H2O)(2))(n)]. 4nH(2)O(HL1 = nicotinic acid N-oxide; Ln = Eu, 1; Ln = Er, 2) the lanthanide(III) ions form infinite double chains along the b direction through the coordination of bridging carboxylate and N-oxide groups. The chains are cross-linked through hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and uncoordinated N-oxide groups and between aqua ligands and lattice water molecules, to form a three-dimensional network. [(Eu(L-2)(2)-(H2O)(4))(n)](NO3)(n). nH(2)O (HL2 = isonicotinic acid N-oxide, 3) has a polymeric structure in which the europium (III) ions are connected into infinite chains by pairs of syn-syn carboxylate groups. Adjacent chains are interlinked by hydrogen bonds between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups to form a layer parallel to the (100) plane, and such layers are connected by hydrogen bonds between nitrate anions and aqua ligands, and between oxide groups and lattice water molecules, into a three-dimensional network. In [(Er-2(L-2)(4)(H2O)(10))](NO3)(2). H2O, 4, dinuclear units are inter-linked into a three-dimensional network through hydrogen bonding between aqua ligands and N-oxide groups of both bidentate bridging and unidentate L-2 ligands. Factors affecting the formation of coordination chains and dinuclear units are discussed. Luminescence properties of 1 and 3 have also been studied. (C) 1998 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.
