NiTiO3 (NTO) nanoparticles encapsulated with SiO2 were prepared by the sol-gel method resulting on core-shell structure. Changes on isoelectric point as a function of silica were evaluated by means of zeta potential. The NTO nanoparticles heat treated at 600 degrees C were characterized by X-ray diffraction, transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and energy dispersive X-ray analysis. TEM observations showed that the mean size of NTO is in the range of 2.5-42.5 nm while the thickness of SiO2 shell attained 1.5-3.5 nm approximately.

The pearlitic reaction in Cu-10wt%Al alloy with additions of 4, 6, 8, and 10wt%Ag was studied using scanning electron microscopy, energy dispersive X-ray microanalysis, in situ X-ray diffractometry, and microhardness measurements. The results indicated that the presence of Ag changes the pearlitic phase microstructure and its mechanical properties, because of the influence of Ag in the pearlitic phase growth mechanism. The physicochemical electronic characteristics of SnO2 render it useful in many technical applications, including ceramic varistors, stable electrodes used in electric glass-melting furnaces and electrometallurgy of aluminum, transparent windows and chemical sensors. The use of ZnO as a sintering aid was explored in this study to obtain SnO2 as a dense ceramic. Compacts were obtained by mechanical mixing of oxides, isostatic pressing at 210 MPa and sintering in situ inside a dilatometer at heating rates of 10degreesC/min. The grain size and microstructure were investigated by scanning and transmission electron microscopy (SEM/TEM). The phases and chemical composition were analyzed by energy dispersive spectroscopy (EDS) and X-ray diffraction (XRD). The results indicated that ZnO acts as a densification aid for SnO2, improving its grain growth with additions of up to 2 mol%. ZnO forms a solid solution with SnO2 UP to 1 mol%, above which SnZnO3 precipitates in the grain boundary, potentially inhibiting shrinkage and grain growth. (C) 2004 Kluwer Academic Publishers

We report the effects of oxygen stoichiometry in the structure and magnetic response of spinel-type NiMn2O4-delta polycrystalline samples controlled by heat-treatments in different atmospheric conditions. The post-annealed samples were analyzed by Scanning Electron Microscopy associated to X-ray Energy Dispersion Spectrometry, X-ray Photoelectron Spectroscopy and AC/DC magnetic measurements. Results indicate that the oxygen stoichiometry highly influences the magnetic interactions between the ferromagnetic, and antiferromagnetic sublattices in these compounds due to the presence of manganese in three possible valence states. Statement of problem. Titanium has physical and mechanical properties, which have led to its increased use in dental prostheses despite casting difficulties due to high melting point and formation of oxide layers which affect the metal-ceramic bond strength.Purpose. This in vitro study evaluated the shear bond strength of the interface of 2 dental porcelains and pure titanium injected into a mold at 3 different temperatures.Material and methods. Using commercially pure (cp) titanium bars (Titanium, Grade I) melted at 1668degreesC and cast at mold temperatures of 430degreesC, 700degreesC or 900degreesC, 60 specimens were machined to 4 x 4 mm, with a base of 5 x 1 mm. The 4-mm surfaces were airborne-particle abraded with 100 mum aluminum oxide before applying and firing the bonding agent and evaluating the 2 porcelains (Triceram/Triline ti and Vita Titankeramik). Ten specimens were prepared for each temperature and porcelain combination Shear bond testing was performed in a universal testing machine, with a 500-kg load cell and crosshead speed of 0.5 mm/min. The specimens were loaded until failure. The interfaces of representative fractured specimens of each temperature were examined with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) and energy dispersive spectrometer (EDS). Data for shear bond strength (MPa) were statistically analyzed by 2-way ANOVA and the Tukey test (alpha = .05).Results. The results showed significant differences for the metal/porcelain interaction effect (P = .0464). There were no significant differences for the 2 porcelains (P = .4250). The Tukey test showed a significant difference between the pair cp Ti 430degreesC Triceram and cp Ti 900degreesC Triceram, with respective mean values and SDs of 59.74 +/- 11.62 and 34.03 +/- 10.35 MPa.Conclusion. Triceram porcelain showed a bond strength decrease with an increase in the mold temperature for casting titanium. The highest bond strength for Vita porcelain and the best metal-ceramic interface observed with the SEM were found with the mold temperature of 700degreesC.

Thermogravimetry, Differential Scanning Calorimetry and other analytical techniques (Energy Dispersive X-ray Analysis; Scanning Electron Microscopy; Mapping Surface; X-ray Diffraction; Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectroscopy and Cold Vapor Generation Atomic Absorption Spectroscopy) have been used to study the reaction of mercury with platinum foils. The results suggest that, when heated, the electrodeposited Hg film reacts with Pt to form intermetallic compounds each having a different stability, indicated by at least three mass loss steps. Intermetallic compounds such as PtHg4, PtHg and PtHg2 were characterized by XRD. These intermetallic compounds were the main products formed on the surface of the samples after partial removal of bulk mercury via thermal desorption. The Pt(Hg) solid solution formation caused great surface instability, attributed to the atomic size factor between Hg and Pt, facilitating the acid solution's attack to the surface.

The influence of additions of 2, 4, 6, 8, 10 and 12 mass% Ag on the thermal behavior of the Cu-8 mass% Al alloy was studied using differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), energy dispersive X-ray analysis (EDX) and X-ray diffractometry (XRD). The results indicate that the presence of silver introduces new thermal events, due to the formation of a silver-rich phase and, for additions of 10 and 12 mass% Ag, it is possible to verify the formation of the gamma (1) phase (Cu9Al4) and the metastable transitions which are only observed in alloys with a minimum of 9 mass% Al.

The influence of dopants commonly used in SnO2 varistor ceramics, such as CoO, Cr2O3 or Nb2O5, on the structural properties of SnO2 was investigated. Several SnO2-based ceramics containing only one of the dopants were prepared and characterized. Spectroscopic investigations [visible, near infrared (IR) and IR region] were performed to obtain information about dopants valence states inside the ceramics, as well as about their influence on electronic structure of the material. Structural properties were investigated by X-ray diffraction analysis and mechanisms of dopant incorporation were proposed. Obtained results were confirmed with results of the electrical measurements. Microstructural changes in doped ceramics were investigated by scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis that showed great differences in densities, grain size, and morphology of the SnO2 ceramics depending on type of dopants and their distribution.
