A numerical model of heat transfer in fluidized-bed coating of solid cylinders is presented. By defining suitable dimensionless parameters, the governing equations and its associated initial and boundary conditions are discretized using the method of orthogonal collocation and the resulting ordinary differential equations simultaneously solved for the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperatures. Parametric Studies showed that the dimensionless coating thickness and wall temperature depend on the relative heat capacities of the polymer powder and object, the latent heat of fusion and the size of the cylinder. Model predictions for the coating thickness and wall temperature compare reasonably well with numerical predictions and experimental coating data in the literature and with our own coating experiments using copper cylinders immersed in nylon-11 and polyethylene powders. Surge flow phenomena. e.g.. as a consequence of a dam failure or a flash flood, represent free boundary problems. ne extending computational domain together with the discontinuities involved renders their numerical solution a cumbersome procedure. This contribution proposes an analytical solution to the problem, It is based on the slightly modified zero-inertia (ZI) differential equations for nonprismatic channels and uses exclusively physical parameters. Employing the concept of a momentum-representative cross section of the moving water body together with a specific relationship for describing the cross sectional geometry leads, after considerable mathematical calculus. to the analytical solution. The hydrodynamic analytical model is free of numerical troubles, easy to run, computationally efficient. and fully satisfies the law of volume conservation. In a first test series, the hydrodynamic analytical ZI model compares very favorably with a full hydrodynamic numerical model in respect to published results of surge flow simulations in different types of prismatic channels. In order to extend these considerations to natural rivers, the accuracy of the analytical model in describing an irregular cross section is investigated and tested successfully. A sensitivity and error analysis reveals the important impact of the hydraulic radius on the velocity of the surge, and this underlines the importance of an adequate description of the topography, The new approach is finally applied to simulate a surge propagating down the irregularly shaped Isar Valley in the Bavarian Alps after a hypothetical dam failure. The straightforward and fully stable computation of the flood hydrograph along the Isar Valley clearly reflects the impact of the strongly varying topographic characteristics on the How phenomenon. Apart from treating surge flow phenomena as a whole, the analytical solution also offers a rigorous alternative to both (a) the approximate Whitham solution, for generating initial values, and (b) the rough volume balance techniques used to model the wave tip in numerical surge flow computations.

A model for finely layered visco-elastic rock proposed by us in previous papers is revisited and generalized to include couple stresses. We begin with an outline of the governing equations for the standard continuum case and apply a computational simulation scheme suitable for problems involving very large deformations. We then consider buckling instabilities in a finite, rectangular domain. Embedded within this domain, parallel to the longer dimension we consider a stiff, layered beam under compression. We analyse folding up to 40% shortening. The standard continuum solution becomes unstable for extreme values of the shear/normal viscosity ratio. The instability is a consequence of the neglect of the bending stiffness/viscosity in the standard continuum model. We suggest considering these effects within the framework of a couple stress theory. Couple stress theories involve second order spatial derivatives of the velocities/displacements in the virtual work principle. To avoid C-1 continuity in the finite element formulation we introduce the spin of the cross sections of the individual layers as an independent variable and enforce equality to the spin of the unit normal vector to the layers (-the director of the layer system-) by means of a penalty method. We illustrate the convergence of the penalty method by means of numerical solutions of simple shears of an infinite layer for increasing values of the penalty parameter. For the shear problem we present solutions assuming that the internal layering is oriented orthogonal to the surfaces of the shear layer initially. For high values of the ratio of the normal-to the shear viscosity the deformation concentrates in thin bands around to the layer surfaces. The effect of couple stresses on the evolution of folds in layered structures is also investigated. (C) 2002 Elsevier Science Ltd. All rights reserved.

This paper is devoted to the study of the class of continuous and bounded functions f : [0, infinity] -> X for which exists omega > 0 such that lim(t ->infinity) (f (t + omega) - f (t)) = 0 (in the sequel called S-asymptotically omega-periodic functions). We discuss qualitative properties and establish some relationships between this type of functions and the class of asymptotically omega-periodic functions. In this paper we study the approximate controllability of control systems with states and controls in Hilbert spaces, and described by a second-order semilinear abstract functional differential equation with infinite delay. Initially we establish a characterization for the approximate controllability of a second-order abstract linear system and, in the last section, we compare the approximate controllability of a semilinear abstract functional system with the approximate controllability of the associated linear system. Numerical methods are used to simulate the double-diffusion driven convective pore-fluid flow and rock alteration in three-dimensional fluid-saturated geological fault zones. The double diffusion is caused by a combination of both the positive upward temperature gradient and the positive downward salinity concentration gradient within a three-dimensional fluid-saturated geological fault zone, which is assumed to be more permeable than its surrounding rocks. In order to ensure the physical meaningfulness of the obtained numerical solutions, the numerical method used in this study is validated by a benchmark problem, for which the analytical solution to the critical Rayleigh number of the system is available. The theoretical value of the critical Rayleigh number of a three-dimensional fluid-saturated geological fault zone system can be used to judge whether or not the double-diffusion driven convective pore-fluid flow can take place within the system. After the possibility of triggering the double-diffusion driven convective pore-fluid flow is theoretically validated for the numerical model of a three-dimensional fluid-saturated geological fault zone system, the corresponding numerical solutions for the convective flow and temperature are directly coupled with a geochemical system. Through the numerical simulation of the coupled system between the convective fluid flow, heat transfer, mass transport and chemical reactions, we have investigated the effect of the double-diffusion driven convective pore-fluid flow on the rock alteration, which is the direct consequence of mineral redistribution due to its dissolution, transportation and precipitation, within the three-dimensional fluid-saturated geological fault zone system. It is shown that coherent quantum simultons (simultaneous solitary waves at two different frequencies) can undergo quadrature-phase squeezing as they propagate through a dispersive chi((2)) waveguide. This requires a treatment of the coupled quantized fields including a quantized depleted pump field. A technique involving nonlinear stochastic parabolic partial differential equations using a nondiagonal coherent state representation in combination with an exact Wigner representation on a reduced phase space is outlined. We explicitly demonstrate that group-velocity matched chi((2)) waveguides which exhibit collinear propagation can produce quadrature-phase squeezed simultons. Quasi-phase-matched KTP waveguides, even with their large group-velocity mismatch between fundamental and second harmonic at 425 nm, can produce 3 dB squeezed bright pulses at 850 nm in the large phase-mismatch regime. This can be improved to more than 6 dB by using group-velocity matched waveguides.

We consider solutions to the second-harmonic generation equations in two-and three-dimensional dispersive media in the form of solitons localized in space and time. As is known, collapse does not take place in these models, which is why the solitons may be stable. The general solution is obtained in an approximate analytical form by means of a variational approach, which also allows the stability of the solutions to be predicted. Then, we directly simulate the two-dimensional case, taking the initial configuration as suggested by the variational approximation. We thus demonstrate that spatiotemporal solitons indeed exist and are stable. Furthermore, they are not, in the general case, equivalent to the previously known cylindrical spatial solitons. Direct simulations generate solitons with some internal oscillations. However, these oscillations neither grow nor do they exhibit any significant radiative damping. Numerical solutions of the stationary version of the equations produce the same solitons in their unperturbed form, i.e., without internal oscillations. Strictly stable solitons exist only if the system has anomalous dispersion at both the fundamental harmonic and second harmonic (SH), including the case of zero dispersion at SH. Quasistationary solitons, decaying extremely slowly into radiation, are found in the presence of weak normal dispersion at the second-harmonic frequency.

We develop a systematic theory of quantum fluctuations in the driven optical parametric oscillator, including the region near threshold. This allows us to treat the limits imposed by nonlinearities to quantum squeezing and noise reduction in this nonequilibrium quantum phase transition. In particular, we compute the squeezing spectrum near threshold and calculate the optimum value. We find that the optimal noise reduction occurs at different driving fields, depending on the ratio of damping rates. The largest spectral noise reductions are predicted to occur with a very high-Q second-harmonic cavity. Our analytic results agree well with stochastic numerical simulations. We also compare the results obtained in the positive-P representation, as a fully quantum-mechanical calculation, with the truncated Wigner phase-space equation, also known as the semiclassical theory.

We compare two different approaches to the control of the dynamics of a continuously monitored open quantum system. The first is Markovian feedback, as introduced in quantum optics by Wiseman and Milburn [Phys. Rev. Lett. 70, 548 (1993)]. The second is feedback based on an estimate of the system state, developed recently by Doherty and Jacobs [Phys. Rev. A 60, 2700 (1999)]. Here we choose to call it, for brevity, Bayesian feedback. For systems with nonlinear dynamics, we expect these two methods of feedback control to give markedly different results. The simplest possible nonlinear system is a driven and damped two-level atom, so we choose this as our model system. The monitoring is taken to be homodyne detection of the atomic fluorescence, and the control is by modulating the driving. The aim of the feedback in both cases is to stabilize the internal state of the atom as close as possible to an arbitrarily chosen pure state, in the presence of inefficient detection and other forms of decoherence. Our results (obtained without recourse to stochastic simulations) prove that Bayesian feedback is never inferior, and is usually superior, to Markovian feedback. However, it would be far more difficult to implement than Markovian feedback and it loses its superiority when obvious simplifying approximations are made. It is thus not clear which form of feedback would be better in the face of inevitable experimental imperfections.

A technique based on laser light diffraction is shown to be successful in collecting on-line experimental data. Time series of floc size distributions (FSD) under different shear rates (G) and calcium additions were collected. The steady state mass mean diameter decreased with increasing shear rate G and increased when calcium additions exceeded 8 mg/l. A so-called population balance model (PBM) was used to describe the experimental data, This kind of model describes both aggregation and breakage through birth and death terms. A discretised PBM was used since analytical solutions of the integro-partial differential equations are non-existing. Despite the complexity of the model, only 2 parameters need to be estimated: the aggregation rate and the breakage rate. The model seems, however, to lack flexibility. Also, the description of the floc size distribution (FSD) in time is not accurate.

This paper presents a large amplitude vibration analysis of pre-stressed functionally graded material (FGM) laminated plates that are composed of a shear deformable functionally graded layer and two surface-mounted piezoelectric actuator layers. Nonlinear governing equations of motion are derived within the context of Reddy's higher-order shear deformation plate theory to account for transverse shear strain and rotary inertia. Due to the bending and stretching coupling effect, a nonlinear static problem is solved first to determine the initial stress state and pre-vibration deformations of the plate that is subjected to uniform temperature change, in-plane forces and applied actuator voltage. By adding an incremental dynamic state to the pre-vibration state, the differential equations that govern the nonlinear vibration behavior of pre-stressed FGM laminated plates are derived. A semi-analytical method that is based on one-dimensional differential quadrature and Galerkin technique is proposed to predict the large amplitude vibration behavior of the laminated rectangular plates with two opposite clamped edges. Linear vibration frequencies and nonlinear normalized frequencies are presented in both tabular and graphical forms, showing that the normalized frequency of the FGM laminated plate is very sensitive to vibration amplitude, out-of-plane boundary support, temperature change, in-plane compression and the side-to-thickness ratio. The CSCF and CFCF plates even change the inherent hard-spring characteristic to soft-spring behavior at large vibration amplitudes. (C) 2003 Elsevier B.V. All rights reserved.

Neste trabalho estuda-se a geração de trajectórias em tempo real de um robô quadrúpede. As trajectórias podem dividir-se em duas componentes: rítmica e discreta. A componente rítmica das trajectórias é modelada por uma rede de oito osciladores acoplados, com simetria 4 2 Z Z . Cada oscilador é modelado matematicamente por um sistema de Equações Diferenciais Ordinárias. A referida rede foi proposta por Golubitsky, Stewart, Buono e Collins (1999, 2000), para gerar os passos locomotores de animais quadrúpedes. O trabalho constitui a primeira aplicação desta rede à geração de trajectórias de robôs quadrúpedes. A derivação deste modelo baseia-se na biologia, onde se crê que Geradores Centrais de Padrões de locomoção (CPGs), constituídos por redes neuronais, geram os ritmos associados aos passos locomotores dos animais. O modelo proposto gera soluções periódicas identificadas com os padrões locomotores quadrúpedes, como o andar, o saltar, o galopar, entre outros. A componente discreta das trajectórias dos robôs usa-se para ajustar a parte rítmica das trajectórias. Este tipo de abordagem é útil no controlo da locomoção em terrenos irregulares, em locomoção guiada (por exemplo, mover as pernas enquanto desempenha tarefas discretas para colocar as pernas em localizações específicas) e em percussão. Simulou-se numericamente o modelo de CPG usando o oscilador de Hopf para modelar a parte rítmica do movimento e um modelo inspirado no modelo VITE para modelar a parte discreta do movimento. Variou-se o parâmetro g e mediram-se a amplitude e a frequência das soluções periódicas identificadas com o passo locomotor quadrúpede Trot, para variação deste parâmetro. A parte discreta foi inserida na parte rítmica de duas formas distintas: (a) como um offset, (b) somada às equações que geram a parte rítmica. Os resultados obtidos para o caso (a), revelam que a amplitude e a frequência se mantêm constantes em função de g. Os resultados obtidos para o caso (b) revelam que a amplitude e a frequência aumentam até um determinado valor de g e depois diminuem à medida que o g aumenta, numa curva quase sinusoidal. A variação da amplitude das soluções periódicas traduz-se numa variação directamente proporcional na extensão do movimento do robô. A velocidade da locomoção do robô varia com a frequência das soluções periódicas, que são identificadas com passos locomotores quadrúpedes.

A geração de trajectórias de robôs em tempo real é uma tarefa muito complexa, não
existindo ainda um algoritmo que a permita resolver de forma eficaz. De facto, há
controladores eficientes para trajectórias previamente definidas, todavia, a adaptação a
variações imprevisíveis, como sendo terrenos irregulares ou obstáculos, constitui ainda um
problema em aberto na geração de trajectórias em tempo real de robôs.
Neste trabalho apresentam-se modelos de geradores centrais de padrões de locomoção
(CPGs), inspirados na biologia, que geram os ritmos locomotores num robô quadrúpede.
Os CPGs são modelados matematicamente por sistemas acoplados de células (ou
neurónios), sendo a dinâmica de cada célula dada por um sistema de equações diferenciais
ordinárias não lineares. Assume-se que as trajectórias dos robôs são constituídas por esta
parte rítmica e por uma parte discreta. A parte discreta pode ser embebida na parte rítmica,
(a.1) como um offset ou (a.2) adicionada às expressões rítmicas, ou (b) pode ser calculada
independentemente e adicionada exactamente antes do envio dos sinais para as articulações
do robô. A parte discreta permite inserir no passo locomotor uma perturbação, que poderá
estar associada à locomoção em terrenos irregulares ou à existência de obstáculos na
trajectória do robô. Para se proceder á análise do sistema com parte discreta, será variado o
parâmetro g. O parâmetro g, presente nas equações da parte discreta, representa o offset do
sinal após a inclusão da parte discreta.
Revê-se a teoria de bifurcação e simetria que permite a classificação das soluções
periódicas produzidas pelos modelos de CPGs com passos locomotores quadrúpedes. Nas
simulações numéricas, usam-se as equações de Morris-Lecar e o oscilador de Hopf como
modelos da dinâmica interna de cada célula para a parte rítmica. A parte discreta é
modelada por um sistema inspirado no modelo VITE. Medem-se a amplitude e a
frequência de dois passos locomotores para variação do parâmetro g, no intervalo [-5;5].
Consideram-se duas formas distintas de incluir a parte discreta na parte rítmica: (a) como
um (a.1) offset ou (a.2) somada nas expressões que modelam a parte rítmica, e (b) somada
ao sinal da parte rítmica antes de ser enviado às articulações do robô. No caso (a.1),
considerando o oscilador de Hopf como dinâmica interna das células, verifica-se que a amplitude e frequência se mantêm constantes para -5

Invariant integrals are derived for nematic liquid crystals and applied to materials with small Ericksen number and topological defects. The nematic material is confined between two infinite plates located at y = -h and y = h (h is an element of R+) with a semi-infinite plate at y = 0 and x < 0. Planar and homeotropic strong anchoring boundary conditions to the director field are assumed at these two infinite and semi-infinite plates, respectively. Thus, a line disclination appears in the system which coincides with the z-axis. Analytical solutions to the director field in the neighbourhood of the singularity are obtained. However, these solutions depend on an arbitrary parameter. The nematic elastic force is thus evaluated from an invariant integral of the energy-momentum tensor around a closed surface which does not contain the singularity. This allows one to determine this parameter which is a function of the nematic cell thickness and the strength of the disclination. Analytical solutions are also deduced for the director field in the whole region using the conformal mapping method. (C) 2013 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.
