Com este estudo objetivou-se avaliar a variação na fertilidade do solo e na fauna edáfica sob reflorestamento com paricá (Schizolobium amazonicum Heber ex. Ducke) em monocultivo ou em sistema agroflorestal quando comparados com floresta secundária em área experimental considerando a sazonalidade da precipitação no período de 2009 e 2010. A área experimental pertence a Fazenda Tramontina Belém S/A, localizada no nordeste paraense, no município de Aurora do Pará. Foram analisados quatro tratamentos submetidos a reflorestamento com: Curauá (Ananas comosus var. erectifolius L.B.Smith), Paricá (Shizolobium var. amazonicum Huber ex Ducke) sob a forma de monocultivos, Paricá + curauá (Ananas comosus var. erectifolius L.B.Smith; Shizolobium var. amazonicum Huber ex Ducke); Paricá + Mogno + Freijó + Curauá (Shizolobium var. amazonicum Huber ex Ducke; Switenia macrophylla, King; Cordia goeldiana Huber; Ananas comosus var. erectifolius L.B.Smith). As amostragens foram realizadas em dezembro de 2009, abril e julho de 2010, o que caracterizou o período sazonal de transição (estiagem para chuva intensa), chuva intensa e estiagem respectivamente, para avaliar a granulometria, densidade aparente, densidade da partícula, porosidade total e umidade atual, bases trocáveis, soma de bases, CTC, acidez, fósforo, teor de carbono orgânico, pH, em três profundidades diferentes (0 – 10 cm. 10 - 20 cm; 20 – 40 cm) e a ocorrência de macrofauna edáfica. Os resultados mostraram a ação dos períodos sazonais sobre a densidade aparente, densidade da partícula, porosidade total do solo. Fatores químicos como, por exemplo, carbono orgânico, cujos teores variaram entre 5,85 g/kg e 13,00 g/kg, com teores elevados no sistema de cultivo S2, sofreu alterações nos períodos sazonais chuva intensa e estiagem. Quanto a fauna edáfica, foram capturados 9.964 invertebrados pertencentes a 26 táxons diferentes. Os mais abundantes foram Hymenoptera- Formicidae (5.805), Coleoptera (1.454), Acari (862), Collembola (649), Diplopoda (307) e Isopoda (110). Dos 26 táxons identificados, aproximadamente 40% deles apresentaram apenas um representante nas três amostragens efetuadas ou em apenas uma delas. Os maiores valores para frequência relativa ocorreu no sistema de cultivo S2, S4 e S3, respectivamente. O maior valor para frequência absoluta ocorreu durante o período sazonal chuva intensa em S1. As áreas sob reflorestamento com monocultivo e sistema agroflorestal paricà + curauá mostraram melhores desempenhos na recuperação da fertilidade do solo e da fauna edáfica comprovando a eficácia do paricá em monocultivo ou em sistema agroflorestal na recuperação da fertilidade do solo e da fauna edáfica.

O objetivo deste trabalho foi o de conhecer a comunidade de insetos bentônicos em 17 igarapés do Nordeste Paraense, Amazônia Oriental, sob diferentes usos do solo e investigar as variações na abundância, riqueza e diversidade da comunidade de insetos aquáticos com a cobertura vegetal do seu entorno imediato (zona ripária) e de paisagem (vertentes das microbacias onde se insere o igarapé amostrado). Os macroinvertebrados bentônicos foram coletados entre julho e outubro de 2010, época de menor precipitação. Em cada ponto foram feitas 10 amostragens com Surber para análise quantitativa e três com rede de mão de caráter apenas qualitativo. Para avaliar diferenças entre a riqueza, índice EPT, abundância e a diversidade, foram utilizadas análises de variância e de agrupamento para sumarizar os dados bióticos. Para avaliar as diferenças quanto às escalas de estudo foi empregada a análise ANOSIM seguida da rotina SIMPER. As características ambientais foram avaliadas buscando-se correlacioná-las à composição taxonômica e à distribuição dos táxons através da Análise de Correspondência Canônica (ACC). Um total de 46.371 indivíduos foi coletado, sendo 11.384 com o Surber, distribuídos em 61 táxons com predomínio de insetos aquáticos. As maiores abundâncias observadas foram de Chironomidae, Ephemeroptera, Trichoptera e Coleoptera. Abundância, riqueza e EPT foram maiores nos trechos de igarapés com vegetação ripária de floresta antropizada de igapó e microbacias com predomínio de Floresta. As variáveis ambientais de maior influência sobre a comunidade foram porcentagem de ambiente florestal na zona ripária, temperatura média da água, turbidez, porcentagem de liteira grossa e fina, pH, vazão do canal e coeficiente de variação da largura do canal. Os resultados mostraram diferenças quanto à composição da comunidade em relação aos diferentes usos do solo. Através dos descritores ecológicos, foi detectado que as microbacias com maior percentagem de área de floresta antropizada e sucessional e maior percentagem de vegetação ripária de entorno (30m) apresentaram melhores condições ambientais que aqueles onde predominam as pastagens.

Um dos principais atributos do nicho ecológico das espécies é a ecologia trófica, que afeta a sobrevivência e tamanho das populações. Neste estudo registramos a contribuição das presas na dieta de Physalaemus ephippifer, testamos se havia variação na alimentação desta espécie de acordo com os sexos e os períodos do ano (seco e chuvoso) em três populações de P. ephippifer na Amazônia Oriental. Para isso, analisamos a dieta da espécie quanto a frequência de ocorrência das presas, amplitude e sobreposição trófica, além do índice de importância alimentar. Analisamos 102 espécimes (69 machos e 33 fêmeas), registrando que os itens mais importantes da dieta de P. ephippifer, no geral, eram cupins e formigas. Entretanto, analisando separadamente os sexos e períodos do ano os itens mais importantes na dieta das fêmeas do chuvoso foram larvas de Coleoptera, fêmeas do seco foram cupins e machos nos dois períodos foram formigas. Por se tratar de uma espécie especialista, o presente estudo evidenciou que a dieta não variou de acordo com o sexo ou períodos do ano. Por outro lado, fêmeas, principalmente do período chuvoso apresentaram larvas e cupins como presas mais importantes, sendo também mais nutritivas que a dieta dos machos, coincidindo com o período reprodutivo da espécie, onde as fêmeas necessitariam de maior quantidade de energia para produção de gametas.

The results of ecological restoration techniques can be monitored through biological indicators of soil quality such as the leaf litter arthropod fauna. This study aimed to determine the immediate effect of brushwood transposition transferred from an area of native vegetation to a disturbed area, on the leaf litter arthropod fauna in a degraded cerrado area. The arthropod fauna of four areas was compared: a degraded area with signal grass, two experimental brushwood transposition areas, with and without castor oil plants, and an area of native cerrado. In total, 7,660 individuals belonging to 23 taxa were sampled. Acari and Collembola were the most abundant taxa in all studied areas, followed by Coleoptera, Diptera, Hemiptera, Hymenoptera, and Symphyla. The brushwood transposition area without castor oil plants had the lowest abundance and dominance and the highest diversity of all areas, providing evidence of changes in the soil community. Conversely, the results showed that the presence of castor oil plants hampered early succession, negatively affecting ecological restoration in this area.

Padrões da dieta de Thoropa taophora (Anura, Cycloramphidae) no litoral norte do estado de São Paulo

As ilhas do litoral do estado de São Paulo estão isoladas desde o final do Pleistoceno, depois da última elevação do nível do mar (cerca de 10.000 anos). Elas apresentam condições diferentes do que as do continente, como por exemplo, a disponibilidade de recursos e pressão de predação. Os anfíbios apresentam pele permeável e assim, de modo geral, são intolerantes à salinidade do mar. Desta forma, as populações de anfíbios insulares podem apresentar variações em comportamentos em relação às populações do continente. O objetivo deste trabalho é avaliar e comparar os hábitos alimentares das populações insulares e continentais de Thoropa taophora, uma espécie endêmica da Mata Atlântica que ocorre em costões rochosos e riachos. Neste estudo, utilizamos os espécimes adultos da coleção de Anfíbios do Departamento de Zoologia, Instituto de Biociências, UNESP, Rio Claro (CFBH), provenientes de duas localidades no continente (Barra do Una e praia de Toque-Toque, município de São Sebastião, SP); e de sete Ilhas do litoral do Estado de São Paulo (Ilha dos Gatos, Ilha de Toque-Toque Grande, Ilha do Prumirim, Ilha Redonda, Ilha de Porcos Pequena, Ilha das Couves e Ilha das Ilhas). Em laboratório, foram medidos a massa corpórea (MC), o comprimento rostro-cloacal (CRC), e a largura da cabeça (LC) de cada indivíduo. O conteúdo estomacal e intestinal foi analisado qualitativa e quantitativamente. Para todas as populações de T. taophora, Formicidae foi o item alimentar mais consumido. Outras categorias como Coleoptera, Araneae e Blattodea também foram representativas. Não houve diferença na riqueza de presas entre as populações de T. taophora. Machos de todas as populações comeram mais formigas do que as fêmeas, no entanto não houve diferença entre a riqueza de presas entre machos e fêmeas. Este estudo foi pioneiro para entender quais... This work was carried out to evaluate the functional response of Cryptolaemus montrouzieri Mulsant, 1850 (Coleoptera: Coccinellidae) fed with Planococcus citri Risso, 1813 (Hemiptera: Pseudococcidae) reared on a pumpkin hybrid (Cucurbita maxima x Cucurbita moscata) (Cucurbitaceae), seedlings of Rangpur lime (Citrus limonia) Rutaceae) and potato (Solanum tuberosum) (Solanaceae) at two temperatures. The predation rate of C. montrouzieri was measured using Petri dishes of 15 cm diameter with 1, 2, 4, 8, 16 and 24 adults of P. Citri. One third instar larva, one fourfh instar and one newly emerged adult (without differentiation of sex) of C. montrouzieri were added to each plate. The study was conducted in climatic chambers at temperatures of 25 and 30 degrees C and photophase of 12 hours. The predation rate was evaluated after 24 hours of prey exposition to the predator, by counting the number of preys trapped in the different treatments and control. The statistical design was completely randomized with four treatments x 6 subplots with 7 repetitions, the two temperatures. The values obtained were subjected to analysis of variance, to relate the number of scales preyed by larvae and adults of C. montrouzieri set up in different substrates. The amount of prey consumed by larvae and adults of the predator increased with increasing the prey density until it reaches a plateau, characterizing functional response type II. In general, the number of scales preyed by larvae and adults of C. montrouzieri was higher on potato and under temperature of 30 degrees C.

In order to better understand edge and matrix effects on the richness and abundance of edaphic arthropods, this study assessed: (a) the difference between habitat (fragment) and non-habitat (matrix); (b) whether there is a continuous interior-edge-matrix gradient; and (c) the difference between matrices for arthropod orders richness and abundance. We selected 15 landscapes, 5 of which contained a cerrado fragment surrounded by sugarcane cultivation, 5 with a cerrado fragment within eucalyptus and 5 with a cerrado fragment within pasture. In each landscape the soil fauna was collected along with the soil and then extracted with the aid of the modified Berlese-Tullgren funnel. We chose the orders Coleoptera, Collembola, Mesostigmata and Oribatida for analysis, and after separation of the individuals we used model selection analysis via AIC. The model type fragment x matrix was the most likely to explain richness, total and relative abundances of the four orders (wAICc between 0,6623 and 1,0). The model of edge distance (edge effect) was plausible to total abundance and relative abundance of Mesostigmata order (wAICc=0,2717 and 0,186). Local environmental variables (soil texture, temperature and relative humidity), and fragment size were also measured to avoid confounding factors and were not presented as plausible models to explain the patterns. So edaphic arthropods, despite protecting themselves under the ground, are extremely sensitive to fragmentation, even with the replacement of natural habitat by agricultural use, such as sugarcane, pasture and eucalyptus. Studies on feeding ecology are important tools for the understanding of feeding strategies and niche dynamics. Information on the type of food consumed, how, and where it is acquired, enable the elucidation of species behavioral, evolutionary and ecological aspects. The diet study based on fecal material enables a low-cost, informative research and avoids the sacrifice of animals. The general aim of this study is to characterize the diet of Euphractus sexcinctus, the yellow-armadillo, based on fecal samples, to contribute with additional information on their feeding habits. The study was undertaken at the Nhumirim ranch, Pantanal da Nhecolândia, MS, during the months of February and March, 2014. The fecal material was collected during the manual capture of the animals and oven dried at 60°C. The food items found in the feces were sorted using a magnifying glass and separated in the following categories: plant matter, invertebrates and soil. Invertebrates were identified to the order level and the plant matter to the lowest taxonomic level possible. Aiming to evaluate the invertebrate availability in the soil, pitfall traps were installed next to the location where individuals were captured, during the months of April and May. We were able to estimate the frequency with which item was consumed during the studied period, and if there is a relationship between the frequency of consumed invertebrates and their availability environment. Among the analyzed samples, we could observe the frequency of occurrence (FO) of plant matter, invertebrates and soil in all the samples. The main invertebrate orders found in the samples were: Coleoptera, Orthoptera and Hymenoptera, with FO of 100%, 100% and 87,5%, respectively. Seeds were found in 100% of the samples. The FO of the Byrsonima orbignyana was high (62,5%), and evidences the potential of the yellow-armadillos as seed dispersers. The use of other techniques, such as the micro-histological...

Stage-structured models that integrate demography and dispersal can be used to identify points in the life cycle with large effects on rates of population spatial spread, information that is vital in the development of containment strategies for invasive species. Current challenges in the application of these tools include: (1) accounting for large uncertainty in model parameters, which may violate assumptions of ‘‘local’’ perturbation metrics such as sensitivities and elasticities, and (2) forecasting not only asymptotic rates of spatial spread, as is usually done, but also transient spatial dynamics in the early stages of invasion. We developed an invasion model for the Diaprepes root weevil (DRW; Diaprepes abbreviatus [Coleoptera: Curculionidae]), a generalist herbivore that has invaded citrus-growing regions of the United States. We synthesized data on DRW demography and dispersal and generated predictions for asymptotic and transient peak invasion speeds, accounting for parameter uncertainty. We quantified the contributions of each parameter toward invasion speed using a ‘‘global’’ perturbation analysis, and we contrasted parameter contributions during the transient and asymptotic phases. We found that the asymptotic invasion speed was 0.02–0.028 km/week, although the transient peak invasion speed (0.03– 0.045 km/week) was significantly greater. Both asymptotic and transient invasions speeds were most responsive to weevil dispersal distances. However, demographic parameters that had large effects on asymptotic speed (e.g., survival of early-instar larvae) had little effect on transient speed. Comparison of the global analysis with lower-level elasticities indicated that local perturbation analysis would have generated unreliable predictions for the responsiveness of invasion speed to underlying parameters. Observed range expansion in southern Florida (1992–2006) was significantly lower than the invasion speed predicted by the model. Possible causes of this mismatch include overestimation of dispersal distances, demographic rates, and spatiotemporal variation in parameter values. This study demonstrates that, when parameter uncertainty is large, as is often the case, global perturbation analyses are needed to identify which points in the life cycle should be targets of management. Our results also suggest that effective strategies for reducing spread during the asymptotic phase may have little effect during the transient phase. Includes Appendix.
