The effect of hyperbranched macromolecular architectures (dendrimers) upon chirality has received significant attention in recent years in the light of the proposal of amplification of chirality. In particular, several studies have been carried out on the chiroptical properties of dendrimers that contain a chiral core and achiral branches in order to determine if the chirality of the central core can be transmitted to the distal. region of the macromolecule. In addition to interest of a pure academic nature, the presence of such chiral conformational order would be extremely useful in the development of asymmetric catalysts. In this paper, a novel class of chiral dendrimers is described - these perfect hyperbranched macromolecules have been prepared by a convergent route by the coupling of a chiral central core based upon tris(2-aminoethyl)amine and poly(aromatic amide ester) dendritic branches. The chiral properties of these dendrimers have been investigated by detailed optical rotation studies and circular dichroism analysis; the results of these studies are described herein. Two tridentate Schiff bases, HL1(6-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one), and HL2 (6-atnino-3,6-dimethyl-1-phenyl-4-azahex-2-en-1-one) on reaction with Cu(II) perchlorate in the presence of triethyl amine yielded two new trinuclear copper(II) complexes, [(CuL1)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) (1) and [(CuL2)(3)(mu(3)-OH)](ClO4)(2) center dot 0.75H(2)O (2), whereas another tridentate ligand HL3 (7-amino-3-methyl-1-phenyl-4-azahept-2-en-1-one) underwent hydrolysis under the same reaction conditions to result in the formation of a mononuclear complex, [Cu(bn)(pn)ClO4] (3) [where bn = 1-benzoylacetonate and pn = 1,3-propanediamine]. All three complexes have been characterized by X-ray crystallography. For both 1 and 2 the cationic part is trinuclear with a [Cu3OH] core held by three carbonyl oxygen bridges between each pair of copper(II) atoms. The structure of 3 is a monomer with a chelating 1,3-propanediamine and a benzoyl acetone moiety. Magnetic measurements of I and 2 have been performed in the 2-300 K temperature range. The experimental data could be satisfactorily reproduced by using an isotropic exchange model, H = -J(S1S2 + S2S3 + S1S3), yielding as best fit parameters: J = -25.6 cm(-1), g = 2.21 for 1 and J = 11.2 cm(-1), g = 2.10 for 2. The EPR spectra at low temperature could be indicative of spin frustration in complex 1. (C) 2006 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

Two mononuclear and one dinuclear copper(II) complexes, containing neutral tetradentate NSSN type ligands, of formulation [Cu-II(L-1)Cl]ClO4 (1), [Cu-II(L-2)Cl]ClO4 (2) and [Cu-2(II)(L-3)(2)Cl-2](ClO4)(2) (3) were synthesized and isolated in pure form [where L-1 = 1,2-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)ethane, L-2 = 1,3-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)propane and L-3 = 1,4-bis(2-pyridylmethylthio)butane]. All these green colored copper(II) complexes were characterized by physicochemical and spectroscopic methods. The dinuclear copper(II) complex 3 changed to a colorless dinuclear copper(I) species of formula [Cu-2(1)(L-3)(2)](ClO4)(2),0.5H(2)O (4) in dimethylformamide even in the presence of air at ambient temperature, while complexes I and 2 showed no change under similar conditions. The solid-state structures of complexes 1, 2 and 4 were established by X-ray crystallography. The geometry about the copper in complexes 1 and 2 is trigonal bipyramidal whereas the coordination environment about the copper(I) in dinuclear complex 4 is distorted tetrahedral. It is demonstrated that monodisperse magnetic FePt nanoparticle can be engineered into a protective dense silica layer, followed by concentric outer mesoporous silica layers with tailored -SH, -SO3H and -NH2 surface groups, these new materials can be used to capture heavy metal ions and DNA molecules from solution specifically by their internal or/and external functionalised surfaces by magnetic means.

There has been limited development in catalyst carriers for magnetic separations where superparamagnetic nanoparticles of a high saturation magnetization with no coercivity are required to isolate expensive catalyst reagent that are subjected to repeated magnetic cycles. By using simple stepwise layer-by-layer nanochemistry techniques, we show that an fee FePt nanomagnet can be created inside each silica particle with tailored dimensions to great precision. Subsequent engineering of the external surface with Ti-O-Si species in an optimum structure to create a unique interface gives high activity and excellent selectivity of the composite material for the trans-stilbene oxidation to the corresponding epoxide in the presence of tert-butyl hydroperoxide. Thus, a new magnetic separable epoxidation catalyst is described. This work clearly demonstrates the significance of nanoengineering of a single catalyst particle by a bottom-up construction approach in modern catalyst design, which could lead to new catalytic. properties.

This paper presents the evaluation in power consumption of gated clocks pipelined circuits with different register configurations in Virtex-based FPGA devices. Power impact of a gated clock circuitry aimed at reducing flip-flops output rate at the bit level is studied. Power performance is also given for pipeline stages based on the implementation of a double edge-triggered flip-flop. Using a pipelined Cordic Core circuit as an example, this study did not find evidence in power benefits either when gated clock at the bit-level or double-edge triggered flip-flops used when synthesized with FPGA logic resources.

Many kernel classifier construction algorithms adopt classification accuracy as performance metrics in model evaluation. Moreover, equal weighting is often applied to each data sample in parameter estimation. These modeling practices often become problematic if the data sets are imbalanced. We present a kernel classifier construction algorithm using orthogonal forward selection (OFS) in order to optimize the model generalization for imbalanced two-class data sets. This kernel classifier identification algorithm is based on a new regularized orthogonal weighted least squares (ROWLS) estimator and the model selection criterion of maximal leave-one-out area under curve (LOO-AUC) of the receiver operating characteristics (ROCs). It is shown that, owing to the orthogonalization procedure, the LOO-AUC can be calculated via an analytic formula based on the new regularized orthogonal weighted least squares parameter estimator, without actually splitting the estimation data set. The proposed algorithm can achieve minimal computational expense via a set of forward recursive updating formula in searching model terms with maximal incremental LOO-AUC value. Numerical examples are used to demonstrate the efficacy of the algorithm.

Since its introduction in 1993, the Message Passing Interface (MPI) has become a de facto standard for writing High Performance Computing (HPC) applications on clusters and Massively Parallel Processors (MPPs). The recent emergence of multi-core processor systems presents a new challenge for established parallel programming paradigms, including those based on MPI. This paper presents a new Java messaging system called MPJ Express. Using this system, we exploit multiple levels of parallelism - messaging and threading - to improve application performance on multi-core processors. We refer to our approach as nested parallelism. This MPI-like Java library can support nested parallelism by using Java or Java OpenMP (JOMP) threads within an MPJ Express process. Practicality of this approach is assessed by porting to Java a massively parallel structure formation code from Cosmology called Gadget-2. We introduce nested parallelism in the Java version of the simulation code and report good speed-ups. To the best of our knowledge it is the first time this kind of hybrid parallelism is demonstrated in a high performance Java application. (C) 2009 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.

This paper discusses the design, implementation and synthesis of an FFT module that has been specifically optimized for use in the OFDM based Multiband UWB system, although the work is generally applicable to many other OFDM based receiver systems. Previous work has detailed the requirements for the receiver FFT module within the Multiband UWB ODFM based system and this paper draws on those requirements coupled with modern digital architecture principles and low power design criteria to converge on our optimized solution particularly aimed at a low-clock rate implementation. The FFT design obtained in this paper is also applicable for implementation of the transmitter IFFT module therefore only needing one FFT module in the device for half-duplex operation. The results from this paper enable the baseband designers of the 200Mbit/sec variant of Multiband UWB systems (and indeed other OFDM based receivers) using System-on-Chip (SoC), FPGA and ASIC technology to create cost effective and low power consumer electronics product solutions biased toward the very competitive market.

An unusual hexanuclear Cu-II complex, [{[Cu(NHDEPO)](3)(mu(3)-O)(O3ClO)}(2)(mu-H)]center dot 7ClO(4)center dot 4H(2)O (1) was prepared starting from Cu(ClO4)(2)center dot 6H(2)O and the oxime-based Schiff base ligand NHDEPO (= 3-[3-(diethylamino)propylimino]butan-2-one oxime). Structural characterization of the complex reveals that it consists of two triangular Cu3O units, the copper ions being at the corners of an equilateral triangle, separated by an O center dot center dot center dot O distance of 2,447(5) angstrom, held together solely by a proton. In each triangle, the copper atoms are in square-pyramid environments. The equatorial plane consists of the bridging oxygen of the central OH-(O2-) group together with three atoms (N, N, O) of the Schiff base. All Unusual triply coordinated perchlorate ion (mu(3)-kappa O:kappa O':kappa O '') interacts in axial position with the three copper ions, Variable-temperature (2-300 K) magnetic susceptibility measurements show that complex 1 is antiferromagnetically Coupled (J = -148 cm(1-)). The EPR data at low temperature clearly indicates the presence of spin frustration phenomenon in the complex.

This study focuses on the occurrence and type of clouds observed in West Africa, a subject which has neither been much documented nor quantified. It takes advantage of data collected above Niamey in 2006 with the ARM mobile facility. A survey of cloud characteristics inferred from ground measurements is presented with a focus on their seasonal evolution and diurnal cycle. Four types of clouds are distinguished: high-level clouds, deep convective clouds, shallow convective clouds and mid-level clouds. A frequent occurrence of the latter clouds located at the top of the Saharan Air Layer is highlighted. High-level clouds are ubiquitous throughout the period whereas shallow convective clouds are mainly noticeable during the core of the monsoon. The diurnal cycle of each cloud category and its seasonal evolution is investigated. CloudSat and CALIPSO data are used in order to demonstrate that these four cloud types (in addition to stratocumulus clouds over the ocean) are not a particularity of the Niamey region and that mid-level clouds are present over the Sahara during most of the Monsoon season. Moreover, using complementary data sets, the radiative impact of each type of clouds at the surface level has been quantified in the shortwave and longwave domain. Mid-level clouds and anvil clouds have the largest impact respectively in longwave (about 15 W m−2) and the shortwave (about 150 W m−2). Furthermore, mid-level clouds exert a strong radiative forcing in Spring at a time when the other cloud types are less numerous.
