Thermal analysis methods (differential scanning calorimetry, thermogravimetric analysis, and dynamic mechanical thermal analysis) were used to characterize the nature of polyester-melamine coating matrices prepared under nonisothermal, high-temperature, rapid-cure conditions. The results were interpreted in terms of the formation of two interpenetrating networks with different glass-transition temperatures (a cocondensed polyester-melamine network and a self-condensed melamine-melamine network), a phenomenon not generally seen in chemically similar, isothermally cured matrices. The self-condensed network manifested at high melamine levels, but the relative concentrations of the two networks were critically dependent on the cure conditions. The optimal cure (defined in terms of the attainment of a peak metal temperature) was achieved at different oven temperatures and different oven dwell times, and so the actual energy absorbed varied over a wide range. Careful control of the energy absorption, by the selection of appropriate cure conditions, controlled the relative concentrations of the two networks and, therefore, the flexibility and hardness of the resultant coatings. Purpose. This study examined the broader use of a print-media intervention, which was previously shown to be effective at promoting physical activity to participants recruited from a regional Australian community, as a strategy suitable for a more diverse statewide Population sample. Methods. Participants were randomly selected adults who responded to a telephone interview conducted by the New South Wales Health Department and consented to Participate in a randomized controlled trial. Consenters were allocated to either intervention (n = 361) or control (n = 358) conditions. The intervention, a personalized letter plus stage-targeted booklets, was sent 1 week postbaseline. Data were collected via telephone inter view at baseline and 2 and 8 months and were analyzed using repeated measures analysis of variance (ANOVA) and chi(2) statistics. Results. The groups were similar at baseline (mean age 43 +/- 3 years; 64% women). Process evaluation showed high intervention recall (76% at 2 months) and high follow-up response rules (>85% at 8 months) were achieved. Nonsignificant increases in physical activity were observed (F-1,F-719 = 2.18, p =.14). Discussion. A single mailing of stage-targeted print materials was not effective in promoting increases in physical activity among participants selected from the statewide population. Future research could. examine how the effectiveness of print media might be enhanced, possibly by using supplementary media, community-based Prompts, or other incentives.

Objective. To compare the efficacy of two forms of eye care (hypromellose and Lacri-Lube combination vs polyethylene/Cling wrap covers) for intensive care patients. Design. Randomised-controlled trial. Setting. University affiliated, tertiary referral hospital. Patients and participants. One hundred ten patients with a reduced or absent blink reflex were followed through until they regained consciousness, were discharged from the facility during study enrolment, died or developed a positive corneal ulcer or eye infection. Interventions. All patients received standard eye cleansing every 2 h. In addition to this, group one (n=60) received a treatment combining hypromellose drops and Lacri-Lube (HL) to each eye every 2 h. Group two (n=50) had polyethylene covers only placed over the eye to create a moisture chamber. Measurements and results. Corneal ulceration was determined using corneal fluorescein stains and mobile slit lamp evaluation, performed daily. No patients had corneal ulceration in the polyethylene cover group, but 4 patients had corneal ulceration in the HL group. Conclusions. Polyethylene covers are as effective as HL in reducing the incidence of corneal damage in intensive care patients.

Lanthanum hydroxycarbonate crystals with controlled phases and varied morphologies were prepared on the surface of a non-crystalline substrate, glass. The phases and morphologies of the crystals were controlled conveniently by varying the reaction temperature and the quantity of starting materials. Orthorhombic crystals were obtained at 160 degreesC, distributed individually on the substrate and had a flaky rhombic shape. Hexagonal crystals were obtained at 180 degreesC. The crystals had a rhomboidal shape, were uniform and continuous enough to form a solid film on the substrate. The substrates were corroded under the hydrothermal conditions and offered a coarse surface for the crystal growth. The hexagonal lanthanum hydroxycarbonate was discovered to show significant second harmonic generation, which would be of interest for developing novel optical materials. (C) 2004 Elsevier Inc. The phase equilibria in the FeO-Fe2O3-ZnO system have been experimentally investigated at oxygen partial pressures between metallic iron saturation and air using a specially developed quenching technique, followed by electron probe X-ray microanalysis (EPMA) and then wet chemistry for determination of ferrous and ferric iron concentrations. Gas mixtures of H-2, N-2, and CO2 or CO and CO2 controlled the atmosphere in the furnace. The determined metal cation ratios in phases at equilibrium were used for the construction of the 1200 degrees C isothermal section of the Fe-Zn-O system. The univariant equilibria between the gas phase, spinel, wustite, and zincite was found to be close to pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-8) atm at 1200 degrees C. The ferric and ferrous iron concentrations in zincite and spinel at equilibrium were also determined at temperatures from 1200 degrees C to 1400 degrees C at pO(2) = 1 center dot 10(-6) atm and at 1200 degrees C at pO(2) values ranging from 1 center dot 10(-4) to 1 center dot 10(-8) atm. Implications of the phase equilibria in the Fe-Zn-O system for the formation of the platelike zincite, especially important for the Imperial Smelting Process (ISP), are discussed.

The clinical usefulness of hemodialysis catheters is limited by increased infectious morbidity and mortality. Topical antiseptic agents, such as mupirocin, are effective at reducing this risk but have been reported to select for antibiotic-resistant strains. The aim of the present study was to determine the efficacy and the safety of exit-site application of a standardized antibacterial honey versus mupirocin in preventing catheter-associated infections. A randomized, controlled trial was performed comparing the effect of thrice-weekly exit-site application of Medihoney versus mupirocin on infection rates in patients who were receiving hemodialysis via tunneled, cuffed central venous catheters. A total of 101 patients were enrolled. The incidences of catheter-associated bacteremias in honey-treated (n = 51) and mupirocin-treated (n = 50) patients were comparable (0.97 versus 0.85 episodes per 1000 catheter-days, respectively; NS). On Cox proportional hazards model analysis, the use of honey was not significantly associated with bacteremia-free survival (unadjusted hazard ratio, 0.94; 95% confidence interval, 0.27 to 3.24; P = 0.92). No exit-site infections occurred. During the study period, 2% of staphylococcal isolates within the hospital were mupirocin resistant. Thrice-weekly application of standardized antibacterial honey to hemodialysis catheter exit sites was safe, cheap, and effective and resulted in a comparable rate of catheter-associated infection to that obtained with mupirocin (although the study was not adequately powered to assess therapeutic equivalence). The effectiveness of honey against antibiotic-resistant microorganisms and its low likelihood of selecting for further resistant strains suggest that this agent may represent a satisfactory alternative means of chemoprophylaxis in patients with central venous catheters.

Aims Previous isobolographic analysis revealed that coadministration of morphine and oxycodone produces synergistic antinociception in laboratory rodents. As both opioids can produce ventilatory depression, this study was designed to determine whether their ventilatory effects were synergistic when coadministered to healthy human subjects. Methods A placebo-controlled, randomized, crossover study was performed in 12 male volunteers. Ventilatory responses to hypoxaemia and hypercapnia were determined from 1-h intravenous infusions of saline ('placebo'), 15 mg morphine sulphate (M), 15 mg oxycodone hydrochloride (O), and their combination in the dose ratios of 1 : 2, 1 : 1, 2 : 1. Drug and metabolite concentrations in serial peripheral venous blood samples were measured by high-performance liquid chromatography-MS/MS. Results 'Placebo' treatment was without significant ventilatory effects. There were no systematic differences between active drug treatments on either the slopes or intercepts of the hypoxaemic and hypercapnia ventilation responses. During drug treatment, the mean minute ventilation at PETCO2 = 55 mmHg (V-E55) decreased to 74% of the subjects' before treatment values (95% confidence interval 62, 87), 68% (57, 80), 69% (59, 79), 68% (63, 73), and 61% (52, 69) for M15, M10/O5, M7.5/O7.5, M5/O10 and O15, respectively. Recovery was more prolonged with increasing oxycodone doses, corresponding to its greater potency and lower clearance compared with morphine. Conclusions Although adverse ventilatory effects of these drugs were found as expected, no unexpected or disproportionate effects of any of the morphine and oxycodone treatments were found that might impede their use in combination for pain management.

The effect of soil puddling on growth of lowland rice (Oryza sativa) and post-rice mungbean (Vigna radiata) was investigated using mini rice beds under controlled glasshouse conditions. Each mini rice bed was approximately 1 m(3) in size. Three different soil types were used: a well-drained, permeable loam; a hardsetting, structurally unstable silty loam; and a medium clay. Rice yields were reduced by low puddling compared with high puddling intensity on the loam but not affected on the heavier textured soils (silty loam and clay). Yield of mungbean was reduced on highly puddle, structurally unstable soil, indicating that puddling should be reduced on structurally unstable soils. Under glasshouse condition where crop establishment was not a limiting factor and plant available water in 0.65 m of soil was 100 mm, mungbean yields of >1 t/ha were achieved. However, under conditions where subsoil water reserves were depleted for the production of vegetative biomass during initial optimal growing condition, grain yield remained well below 1 t/ha.

Background: The aim of the study was to evaluate the effectiveness of a brief CBT intervention for anxiety with children diagnosed with Asperger syndrome (AS). A second interest was to evaluate whether more intensive parent involvement would increase the child's ability to manage anxiety outside of the clinic setting. Methods: Seventy-one children aged ten to twelve years were recruited to participate in the anxiety programme. All children were diagnosed with AS and the presence of anxiety symptoms was accepted on parent report via brief interview. Children were randomly assigned to one of three conditions: intervention for child only, intervention for child and parent, wait-list control. Results: The two intervention groups demonstrated significant decreases in parent-reported anxiety symptoms at follow-up and a significant increase in the child's ability to generate positive strategies in an anxiety-provoking situation. There were a number of significant differences between the two interventions to suggest parent involvement as beneficial. Conclusions: The sample of children with AS in this study presented with a profile of anxiety similar to a sample of clinically diagnosed anxious children. The intervention was endorsed by parents as a useful programme for children diagnosed with Asperger syndrome and exhibiting anxiety symptoms, and active parent involvement enhanced the usefulness of the programme. Limitations of the study and future research are discussed.
